For most modern Windows installations, boot the USB in UEFI mode. Choose Legacy BIOS (sometimes called Legacy or CSM) only when the PC, an existing Windows installation, or another required environment depends on it. The mode used to start Windows Setup must match the target disk’s partition layout: UEFI with GPT, or Legacy BIOS-compatible mode with MBR.
What UEFI and Legacy mean when you boot a USB
The USB drive is the device; UEFI or Legacy BIOS is the firmware mode the computer uses to start it. The same installation USB may therefore appear twice in the firmware boot menu—for example, as “UEFI: USB Drive” and “BIOS: USB Drive.” These are two ways to start the same media, not two different USB drives. Choose the entry that matches the installation mode you intend to use. Some computers offer only one mode. Microsoft explains the boot-menu distinction and mode selection.
The choice affects how Windows Setup starts and how the installed system normally boots. Starting Setup in UEFI mode and installing to a GPT disk is the standard modern pairing; Legacy BIOS-compatible installation pairs with MBR. A mismatch can prevent installation or leave the system unable to boot as intended.
UEFI vs. Legacy BIOS at a glance
| Consideration | UEFI | Legacy BIOS / CSM |
|---|---|---|
| Typical Windows disk layout | GPT | MBR |
| Best fit | Most modern Windows installations | Older PCs, existing legacy installations, or environments that require BIOS compatibility |
| Security features | Supports UEFI security features such as Secure Boot, subject to the PC’s firmware and configuration | Legacy/CSM settings can affect Secure Boot availability |
| Boot-menu listing | May appear as “UEFI: [USB name]” | May appear as “BIOS: [USB name]” or a Legacy entry |
Microsoft’s general guidance is to install Windows in UEFI mode because it includes more security features than Legacy BIOS. UEFI can also speed boot and shutdown in some circumstances, but Microsoft does not promise a particular improvement on every PC. See Microsoft’s boot-mode guidance.

How to choose the right boot entry
For a new Windows installation on a modern PC
- Open the PC’s one-time boot menu or firmware setup. The key and menu labels vary by manufacturer; consult the PC maker’s instructions if needed.
- Select the entry that starts the USB in UEFI mode, if it is listed.
- Install Windows to a GPT-configured target disk. If the disk is not prepared for UEFI, Setup may report that the selected disk is not of the GPT partition style.
For an existing Legacy installation or required older environment
Select the Legacy BIOS or CSM entry only if you need to preserve a system installed in that mode, the computer lacks UEFI boot support, or a required older operating system or network-boot environment supports only BIOS. Check the manufacturer’s firmware documentation before changing settings; available modes and their names differ by model.
Why the disk must match the boot mode
Windows Setup’s boot mode and the target disk’s partition style work as a pair: UEFI installation uses GPT, while Legacy BIOS-compatible installation uses MBR. If Setup is started in UEFI mode but the disk is configured for MBR, Setup may show “The selected disk is not of the GPT partition style.” Microsoft describes the alternatives as restarting Setup in legacy compatibility mode to retain the existing partition style, or preparing the disk for UEFI/GPT. Read Microsoft’s MBR and GPT installation guidance.

- Easy-to-use password protection for your private files(3) [(3)Password protection uses 128-bit AES encryption and is supported by Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, and Mac OS X v10.9 plus; Software download required for Mac, visit the SanDisk SecureAccess support page]
MBR and GPT also differ in capacity and partition flexibility. Microsoft notes that MBR does not support drives larger than 4 TB and is difficult to configure for more than four partitions. GPT supports drives larger than 4 TB and makes it easier to create more partitions. These distinctions refer to the disk where Windows will be installed—not a universal requirement that the USB installation media itself must use GPT or MBR.
Before changing partitions or converting a disk
- Back up important files first. Deleting or reformatting partitions in Windows Setup erases data on them.
- Do not assume a boot-mode switch is harmless. An existing Windows installation may need a disk conversion as well as a firmware change to move from Legacy/MBR to UEFI/GPT.
- Keep a recovery plan. Make sure you can restore or repair the system before altering its partition layout or firmware settings.
- Consider the appropriate conversion path. Microsoft documents MBR2GPT as an option in suitable cases; verify the requirements before proceeding rather than deleting partitions by default.
Microsoft’s partition-style guidance covers the Setup mismatch and conversion context. A firmware toggle by itself does not convert a disk.

Secure Boot and Legacy mode
Secure Boot is a UEFI startup security feature intended to help prevent malicious software from loading by allowing trusted, digitally signed software to run. Legacy or CSM configuration can affect whether Secure Boot is available. For Windows 11, Microsoft says the device must be Secure Boot capable with UEFI/BIOS enabled to meet the upgrade requirement, and recommends enabling Secure Boot for better security. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 Secure Boot guidance.
Do not disable Secure Boot casually to make installation media start. If Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance or a specific compatibility issue calls for temporarily disabling it, turn it back on afterward. If an existing Windows system needs to move from Legacy to UEFI, check its disk layout and plan for conversion and recovery before changing firmware settings.

What the USB needs—and what it does not
You need usable Windows installation media on a USB flash drive if you are installing from USB; Microsoft lists USB flash-drive installation as a Windows installation path. The sources cited here do not establish a required drive capacity, speed, brand, or model. If your existing installation USB works, the boot-mode question alone is not a reason to replace it. Microsoft’s Windows Setup overview describes installation paths and disk-style considerations.
