The right way to uninstall software in Ubuntu depends on how it was installed. For a graphical application, open App Center, go to Manage, select the application, choose Uninstall, and authenticate. For a Debian package managed by APT, run sudo apt remove PACKAGE; add --purge when the package’s configuration files should also be deleted. Finish by reviewing sudo apt autoremove if APT identifies automatically installed dependencies that are no longer needed. Software installed from source or copied manually has no universal removal command, so follow that project’s README or INSTALL instructions.
This guide explains each route, what gets removed, how Snap and Debian formats differ, when to use purge, and how to avoid breaking software that other applications require.
Which Ubuntu uninstall method should you use?
Match the removal method to the installation format rather than guessing from the application’s name. Ubuntu distributes desktop applications as Snap packages and Debian packages, and App Center can manage both formats. A source build or a collection of files copied outside the package system must be cleaned up according to its own project instructions.

If you are unsure, start in App Center. If the application is not managed there and you know it is a Debian package, use APT. Do not use a low-level removal command simply because it is shorter; dependency-aware tools are safer for package-managed software.

How do I uninstall a graphical application with App Center?
App Center provides the shortest supported workflow for a desktop application. It can remove applications distributed as Snap packages or Debian packages, so you do not need to identify the format before opening it.
- Open App Center from the Ubuntu applications overview.
- Open the Manage view. This view lists applications installed through the graphical package manager.
- Find and select the application you want to remove.
- Click Uninstall.
- Authenticate when Ubuntu requests permission, then wait for the removal to finish.
What should I check in the confirmation dialog?
Read the list of packages or applications that App Center proposes to remove. Some applications depend on other applications. Ubuntu warns that removing a required application can remove both, so cancel the operation if the list includes software you still need and investigate the dependency before trying again.
When is App Center the better choice?
Use it when you want a visual list, are not sure whether the application is a Snap or Debian package, or prefer not to type package commands. The interface also handles authentication and presents the removal impact before it proceeds. A terminal command gives more explicit control over retaining or deleting package configuration files, which is why APT is preferable for that specific decision.
How do I remove a Debian package with APT?
For software installed as a Debian package and managed by APT, use the package name with apt remove. The command removes the installed package while leaving its package configuration files available; use the purge form only when those files should be deleted as well.
- Open a Terminal window.
- Replace
PACKAGEin the command with the package’s actual package identifier. - Run
sudo apt remove PACKAGE. - Enter your Ubuntu account password when prompted.
- Read APT’s proposed changes. Confirm only if the package and any listed removals are expected.
- Allow APT to complete, then close the terminal or continue with dependency cleanup if appropriate.
The command is deliberately explicit: PACKAGE is a placeholder, not text to enter literally. APT may show additional packages in its transaction. Treat that list as a safety check, especially on a system where the application may be required by another package.
How do I remove the package and its configuration files?
Run:
sudo apt remove --purge PACKAGE
Ubuntu’s package-management documentation defines --purge as removing the package’s configuration files in addition to the package itself. Choose this form when you do not want those settings retained for a future reinstall or troubleshooting session. If you may reinstall the same package and want its existing package-level settings available, use ordinary remove instead.

When should I avoid purging?
Purge is not a faster version of remove; it is a more destructive cleanup of package-owned configuration. Keep the configuration when you are temporarily uninstalling, testing an alternative version, or may reinstall and want to preserve the package’s settings. Purge only when deleting those settings is an intentional part of the uninstall.

What is the difference between apt remove and apt remove --purge?
Both commands remove the selected Debian package. The difference is whether package configuration files are retained.
| Command | Removes the package? | Removes package configuration files? | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
sudo apt remove PACKAGE |
Yes | No; they are retained | You want the program gone but may reuse its settings |
sudo apt remove --purge PACKAGE |
Yes | Yes | You want the package and its package-owned configuration removed |
Neither command is the same as dependency cleanup. Removing one package does not automatically mean every package that was installed alongside it should be deleted. Handle unused automatic dependencies separately with autoremove, and review the proposed list before accepting it.
How do I clean up unused dependencies after uninstalling?
APT records which packages were installed automatically as dependencies. When no remaining package needs one of those automatic packages, autoremove can propose removing it.
- Run
sudo apt autoremove. - Read the complete list APT proposes to remove.
- Cancel if a package you still use appears unexpectedly; do not confirm until the list makes sense.
- Confirm the operation only when the listed packages are genuinely no longer needed.
If you also want configuration files for those unused packages removed, use:
sudo apt autoremove --purge
Ubuntu documents this combined form for removing unused dependencies and their configuration files. It is optional: do not run it merely out of habit after every uninstall. Use it when the proposed dependency list is appropriate and deleting those configurations is part of your cleanup goal.

Why must I inspect the autoremove list?
APT’s automatic-installation marker is the basis for its decision. A package marked as automatically installed may still be relevant to a workflow you care about, while a package you expect to disappear may not be marked that way. The proposed transaction is your opportunity to catch an unwanted removal before it happens.
How do I remove a Snap application?
For a Snap application that appears in Ubuntu’s graphical software manager, use App Center rather than trying to treat it like a Debian package. App Center supports removing Snap applications through its Manage view.
- Open App Center.
- Select Manage.
- Choose the installed Snap application.
- Click Uninstall.
- Authenticate and review the confirmation before allowing the operation to finish.
The format matters because APT commands operate on Debian packages, not on every application visible in Ubuntu. If an application is not listed in App Center, first determine whether it was installed manually or by another package-management route instead of running an unrelated removal command.

Pay attention to App Center’s confirmation details. Ubuntu warns when removing a required application could remove another application as well. Cancel if that consequence is not acceptable and identify the dependency relationship before continuing.
How do I uninstall software installed from source or copied manually?
Source builds and files copied by hand do not have a universal uninstall command. Their files may not be registered with APT or App Center, so using those tools may not remove the installation completely and can give a misleading sense that it is gone.
- Return to the source project’s documentation.
- Read its
READMEorINSTALLinstructions for an uninstall procedure. - Use the project’s documented uninstall target if one is provided.
- Follow any project-specific cleanup sequence exactly, including the same build or installation context the project requires.
If the project provides no uninstall instructions, the available evidence does not establish a safe, universal cleanup procedure. Avoid deleting directories at random; identify the files the project installed and use its documented method whenever possible.

Why does manual installation require a separate procedure?
APT and App Center know about packages they manage. A manual installation can place files wherever its build instructions specify, without creating a package record that another tool can reliably reverse. The project’s own documentation is therefore the authoritative source for what to remove and in what order.
Should I use dpkg directly to uninstall a package?
Ubuntu cautions against using low-level dpkg removal as the normal uninstall route. Direct removal can leave dependent packages installed but broken because it does not provide the same dependency-aware workflow as APT.
Use APT for Debian-package removal unless you have a specific, well-understood administrative reason to work at the lower level. If you already removed something with dpkg and another package no longer works, stop making additional removals and use a dependency-aware package-management workflow to diagnose the resulting package state.
What should I do when an uninstall does not behave as expected?
The application is not listed in App Center
Do not assume the application is an App Center-managed package. It may have been installed manually or through a route that is not represented in the graphical list. Check the application’s installation documentation and use the corresponding package manager or project-specific uninstall instructions.
APT proposes more removals than expected
Read the entire proposed transaction before confirming. A required application can depend on the package you selected, and Ubuntu warns that removing it may remove both. Cancel when the list includes software you need, then reassess which package is actually safe to remove.
You removed the program but settings remain
That is the expected distinction between remove and purge. If the remaining files are package configuration files and you intentionally want them deleted, rerun the removal with --purge rather than assuming the first command failed.

You are unsure whether dependency cleanup is safe
Do not confirm autoremove blindly. Review the proposed package names and cancel if any are still required; automatic-installation status is the reason APT proposes them, not a guarantee that they are irrelevant to your work.
A source-built program remains after package removal
APT can remove only packages it manages. If the software was built from source or copied manually, return to its README or INSTALL documentation and apply the project’s uninstall target or cleanup steps.

- Identify the installation format. Start with App Center for a graphical application; otherwise determine whether it is an APT/Debian package, a Snap managed by App Center, or a manual/source installation.
- Choose the matching tool. App Center handles its listed Snap and Debian applications, APT handles Debian packages, and a project README or INSTALL file handles manual software.
- Decide what should happen to configuration. Use ordinary
apt removeto retain package configuration files; add--purgeonly when deleting them is intentional. - Review dependencies before confirming. Check App Center’s confirmation dialog or APT’s proposed transaction for applications you still need.
- Clean automatic dependencies only when appropriate. Run
sudo apt autoremove, inspect the list, and use--purgewith it only when configuration cleanup is also wanted. - Do not substitute a lower-level command for a safer one. Prefer dependency-aware APT operations over direct

Frequently Asked Questions
Is PACKAGE a command I type exactly as shown?
No. It represents the Debian package identifier supplied to APT. Replace it with the actual package name before running either removal command.
Is running autoremove required after every uninstall?
No. It is appropriate only when APT proposes automatic dependencies that are no longer needed. Always inspect that proposal before confirming.
What does Ubuntu mean when App Center asks me to authenticate?
It is requesting authorization for a system-level software change, normally by asking for your Ubuntu account password. The uninstall does not proceed until that authentication succeeds.
Why can uninstalling one package affect another application?
Applications can share or require packages. Ubuntu therefore displays related removals in the confirmation step; cancel if the proposed changes include software you still rely on.
