You can use an Ubuntu 24.04 desktop template on a VPS with VNC only when the template actually includes a configured VNC server, a graphical desktop, reachable network port, and usable credentials. Confirm those four items in the provider’s template notes or control panel before trying to connect. Ubuntu 24.04’s built-in GNOME remote-sharing documentation describes RDP, not VNC; if the template exposes RDP, use an RDP client instead of a VNC client.

If your VPS is a plain Ubuntu Server installation, add a desktop environment first, then use the remote protocol supplied by your provider or install a separately documented VNC server. The steps below show how to identify the image, choose an appropriate desktop, connect with Remmina, and troubleshoot session, port, firewall, and resource problems without assuming that every VPS template is identical.

What should you confirm in an Ubuntu 24.04 VPS template before connecting?

“Ubuntu 24.04 with desktop” is not a universal configuration. One provider may install a lightweight desktop and VNC; another may install GNOME and an RDP service; a third may provide only a graphical console. Treat the template documentation and control panel as the source of truth for the following items:

  • Desktop environment: GNOME, Xfce/Xubuntu, LXQt/Lubuntu, or another environment.
  • Remote server: VNC, RDP, or no network remote-desktop service.
  • Startup behavior: whether the remote service starts automatically after a reboot.
  • Address and port: the public IP or host name and the exact externally reachable port.
  • Credentials: the username, password, and any separate password configured for the remote service.
  • Session model: whether you share an existing graphical login or receive a separate remote session.
  • Network controls: VPS firewall rules, a cloud security group, or provider-side access controls.

Do not infer these values from the Ubuntu version number. A template can contain Ubuntu 24.04 and still use a different desktop, a non-default port, or a provider-specific account.

Is the template using VNC or RDP?

Check the server side before choosing a client. Ubuntu’s 24.04 GNOME documentation states that desktop sharing works over the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). VNC is a separate protocol and needs a VNC server supplied by the template or installed and configured independently.

Question RDP route VNC route
What must run on the VPS? An RDP service, such as Ubuntu’s documented GNOME remote-sharing feature or a separately configured RDP server. A VNC server configured by the provider or by you using that server’s own documentation.
What does Ubuntu’s built-in 24.04 GNOME guide cover? Remote sharing and remote login over RDP. It does not provide a VNC setup.
Which client can connect? Remmina with its RDP plugin or another RDP client. Remmina with its VNC plugin or another VNC client.
Example port in Ubuntu client documentation 3389 5901
Is the example port guaranteed on a VPS? No. The provider may change it or place the service behind another network rule. No. Confirm the actual port and display configuration with the provider.

Ubuntu’s remote-desktop client guide documents both RDP and VNC through Remmina, but a client protocol cannot compensate for a mismatched server. Selecting VNC in Remmina will fail if the template runs only RDP.

Does Ubuntu Server include a graphical desktop?

No. Canonical’s Ubuntu 24.04 release documentation says the server install image “will not install a graphical user interface.” A desktop-ready VPS template may add one for you, but a normal Ubuntu Server installation does not.

Compare the image description with the provider’s plan details. If the control panel says only “Ubuntu 24.04 Server,” expect a command-line system until you install a desktop environment. If it says “desktop,” still verify which environment and remote service are included; the label alone does not establish VNC support.

Which desktop environment should you install on a plain Ubuntu Server VPS?

Choose a package route that matches the VPS capacity and the provider’s support instructions. Ubuntu’s Server wiki lists Xubuntu and Lubuntu as lightweight options, while Ubuntu’s AWS desktop procedure documents the full Ubuntu Desktop package for an EC2 instance. These are documented alternatives, not a universal ranking.

Route Documented package command When it fits Important scope
Xubuntu sudo apt install xubuntu-desktop A lighter desktop is desirable on a smaller VPS. From Ubuntu’s general Server wiki; the provider’s image and support policy still apply.
Lubuntu sudo apt install lubuntu-desktop You want another lightweight desktop option. Also from the general Server wiki; it does not install a VNC server by itself.
Ubuntu Desktop sudo apt-get install -y ubuntu-desktop You are following the Ubuntu-on-AWS desktop procedure or have enough resources for the full desktop. The documented procedure is scoped to AWS instances, not every VPS provider.

Installing a desktop package creates graphical components; it does not automatically prove that VNC will be available, listening, or enabled at boot. Keep the desktop choice separate from the remote-protocol choice.

What resources does an Ubuntu 24.04 desktop VPS need?

Ubuntu’s generic server requirements are lower than a comfortable desktop workload. The current Canonical system-requirements page lists 1 GB RAM and 4 GB storage as minimums for 24.04 amd64 cloud images, with 3 GB RAM and 25 GB storage or more suggested. Those figures describe the cloud-image system requirement, not guaranteed performance for a graphical session.

Ubuntu’s AWS guide recommends 2 CPU cores, 8 GB RAM, and an 8 GB volume for its desktop-on-EC2 procedure. That recommendation is specific to that guide and should not be presented as a requirement for every provider. A desktop, browser, updates, and remote session can consume considerably more than a command-line server, so leave headroom for the workload you intend to run.

Figure Source scope How to interpret it
1 GB RAM; 4 GB storage Ubuntu 24.04 amd64 cloud-image minimums A baseline for the image, not a desktop-performance promise.
3 GB RAM; 25 GB storage or more Ubuntu Server documentation suggested minimum A more practical server baseline, still dependent on desktop and application load.
2 CPU cores; 8 GB RAM; 8 GB volume Ubuntu’s AWS desktop procedure An AWS-scoped recommendation for that documented desktop workflow.

These figures are documented at Ubuntu Server system requirements and the Ubuntu on AWS desktop guide.

How do I add a desktop to an existing Ubuntu 24.04 Server installation?

Use this route only when your VPS is a normal Ubuntu Server installation and the provider permits package changes. Make a provider snapshot or backup first if that facility is available, because adding a desktop downloads many packages and changes the machine’s login stack.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect to the VPS through SSH or the provider’s console.
  2. Refresh package indexes and apply available updates:
    sudo apt update
    sudo apt upgrade
  3. Install one desktop option from the Ubuntu Server wiki:
    sudo apt install xubuntu-desktop
    or
    sudo apt install lubuntu-desktop
  4. Accept the package prompts and allow the installation to complete. The download size and prompts vary with the starting image and installed packages.
  5. Reboot the VPS:
    sudo reboot
  6. After the machine returns, verify through the provider console or SSH that the desktop packages installed. Then confirm which remote service the template or your own configuration is meant to run.

The commands and package choices are documented in Ubuntu’s Server desktop-environment instructions. They do not constitute VNC configuration instructions.

What is the Ubuntu Desktop route on AWS?

If your machine is an EC2 instance and you want to follow Canonical’s AWS-specific procedure, use its documented package sequence rather than translating it blindly to another VPS.

The same AWS guide separately documents an xrdp path, including adding the xrdp account to the ssl-cert group, setting the Ubuntu user password, restarting xrdp, and configuring the Ubuntu session. That is an RDP procedure for the AWS context. Do not assume its account names, security-group settings, or session commands apply unchanged to an unnamed VPS or to a VNC template.

How do Ubuntu 24.04 Desktop Sharing and Remote Login differ?

Ubuntu’s GNOME documentation describes two different RDP operating modes, and the session state matters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Desktop Sharing

Desktop Sharing exposes the graphical session that is already open on the Ubuntu desktop. The user must be logged into that graphical session for sharing to work. A headless VPS template may not meet that condition unless its provider deliberately starts and logs in a desktop session.

Remote Login

Remote Login creates an RDP login path instead of sharing the currently active desktop. Ubuntu’s documentation says the user must be logged out; an existing session may be terminated to allow remote login. This behavior is different from sharing an already logged-in screen, so a connection that works in one mode may fail or behave differently in the other.

These features are RDP-based. If your provider advertises VNC, identify the VNC server’s own session model in its template notes; do not substitute GNOME RDP instructions for VNC configuration.

How do I connect from an Ubuntu client with Remmina?

Remmina is Ubuntu’s documented graphical client for both RDP and VNC. You need the VPS address, the actual service port, and the credentials configured for that service.

  1. Install Remmina and both protocol plugins if they are not already present:
sudo apt install remmina remmina-plugin-rdp remmina-plugin-vnc
  2. Open Remmina from the applications menu.
  3. Create a new connection profile and choose RDP when the VPS runs RDP, or VNC when the VPS runs VNC.
  4. Enter the VPS public IP address or host name and the port supplied by the provider. Ubuntu’s examples use 3389 for RDP and 5901 for VNC; treat those as examples, not defaults.
  5. Enter the remote-desktop username and password exactly as configured. A VPS console password and a VNC-specific password may be different.
  6. Connect and approve any first-connection certificate or fingerprint prompt only after confirming that the address is your VPS.

Ubuntu’s client instructions, including the Remmina package and protocol examples, are at Access a remote desktop.

Why does the connection fail, and what should I check first?

Work from the network inward. Changing desktop packages before confirming the address and listening service can obscure the real fault.

Symptom Likely checks Recovery path
Timeout or “server not reachable” Wrong IP or host name, wrong port, stopped service, provider firewall, or cloud security group. Copy the address and port from the control panel, confirm the service is running in the VPS console, and ask the provider which inbound rule is required.
Connection refused The host answered, but no service is listening on that port or the provider maps a different external port. Verify whether the template uses VNC or RDP and check its startup status and port assignment.
Authentication failure Wrong account, password, or authentication method; credentials may differ between console and remote service. Reset the credential through the provider’s documented method and re-enter the username without assuming it is the VPS administrator account.
Black screen or immediate disconnect Desktop session is not available, the selected protocol does not match the server, or the service’s session configuration is incompatible with the installed desktop. Use the provider’s session instructions, test the provider console, and confirm whether the service shares a logged-in session or creates a new one.
Desktop Sharing works only while someone is logged in That is consistent with Ubuntu’s Desktop Sharing session requirement. Keep the graphical session logged in for sharing, or use the documented Remote Login mode if the provider supports it.
Remote Login cannot start while a local session is active Ubuntu documents Remote Login as requiring the user to be logged out; an existing session may be terminated. Log out at the VPS console and retry, taking care that terminating the session will close its applications.

If the provider template claims to include VNC but supplies no server name, port, or credential instructions, stop and request those details. There is no provider-neutral VNC command that can safely be substituted for missing template documentation.

How should I handle ports, firewalls, and credentials?

Use the exact network path supplied by the VPS provider. Ubuntu’s documentation gives client examples, but it does not establish a universal firewall rule or a universal VNC port for every hosting platform.

  • Record the external port shown by the provider, not only the service’s internal display number.
  • Check both layers when applicable: the operating-system firewall inside Ubuntu and the provider’s firewall or security group outside it.
  • Allow only the protocol you actually use, and restrict the source addresses through provider controls when that option is available.
  • Use a dedicated non-root account when the template supports it, and store credentials in the Remmina profile only if the VPS is protected.
  • After a reboot, test whether the remote service starts automatically; a template that worked immediately after deployment may require a provider-specific boot setting.

These are operational checks, not guarantees about a particular provider’s implementation. Follow its documented firewall and account procedures rather than applying rules copied from an unrelated platform.

How long will Ubuntu 24.04 receive security maintenance?

Ubuntu 24.04 LTS receives standard security maintenance until 31 May 2029, according to the 24.04 LTS release notes. The same release notes describe longer coverage through Ubuntu Pro and a Legacy add-on. The support period applies to Ubuntu itself; a VPS provider may impose separate template, image, or support-lifecycle policies.

Which setup is the right one for your VPS?

Use this decision sequence before changing the machine:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Template already has a desktop and VNC: follow the provider’s address, port, credential, and startup instructions, then connect with Remmina’s VNC profile.
  2. Template has a desktop but advertises RDP: use an RDP profile. Ubuntu’s built-in GNOME remote-sharing documentation belongs to this path, not to VNC.
  3. Plain Ubuntu Server image: install Xubuntu or Lubuntu using Ubuntu’s Server instructions, or follow the AWS Ubuntu Desktop route when you are actually on EC2. Then obtain separate, provider-appropriate instructions for the remote server.
  4. Protocol or credentials unclear: ask the provider before opening ports or installing conflicting services. The missing details are template-specific and cannot be inferred from “Ubuntu 24.04” alone.

The reliable workflow is therefore: identify the image, identify the protocol, verify the session model, confirm the network path, and only then configure the client. That order prevents the common mistake of trying to solve an RDP template with VNC settings or treating a server-only image as if it already contained a desktop.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I run VNC and RDP on the same Ubuntu 24.04 VPS?

Technically, separate services can coexist, but each needs its own session configuration, credentials, and reachable port. Whether that is supported depends on the template and provider, so check for port conflicts and follow the provider’s service-management instructions before enabling a second protocol.

Why does the provider’s web console show a desktop when VNC does not connect?

A web console can display a virtual screen through the provider’s management layer without exposing a VNC service to the public network. Treat the console and VNC as separate access paths and request the VNC server, port, and firewall details from the provider.

Will changing the desktop environment change my VNC password?

Usually the remote-service account and the desktop package are separate configuration layers, but templates can connect them in provider-specific ways. Record the existing credentials and consult the template documentation before replacing the desktop or remote server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I keep a graphical application running after disconnecting?

That depends on whether the service shares an existing session or creates a persistent separate session. Check the template’s session behavior; disconnecting from one mode may leave its session running, while another mode may end applications when the session closes.
