Contact the U.S. Embassy in Brasília or the U.S. consulate or other U.S. mission office in Brazil that gives instructions for your specific service. For an emergency, contact the nearest U.S. mission using its published after-hours channel. Check the official Brazil mission listing before you travel; its contact details and access procedures can change.

Where are U.S. Embassy and consular offices in Brazil?

The U.S. Embassy is in Brasília. The Department of State’s Brazil listing also identifies these U.S. offices:

  • Consulates General: Porto Alegre, Recife, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo.
  • Embassy Branch Office: Belo Horizonte.
  • Consular agencies: Manaus, Fortaleza, and Salvador.

For current addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, and emergency contacts, use the official Brazil listing. Confirm the details before setting out.

How do you choose which office to contact?

Choose based on the service and the instructions for your case—not simply because an office is called an embassy or is closest to you. The Department of State’s Brazil page and the relevant service page should tell you which contact route to use and whether an appointment is required. Do not assume that being near an office means it handles your case.

  • Routine help for a U.S. citizen: Start with the Brazil listing and the page for the service you need, then use the office’s published contact method and appointment instructions.
  • U.S. visa information for a non-U.S. citizen: Follow the Brazil-specific visa information and designated post or process. General embassy guidance describes visa assistance, but the correct post depends on the Brazil-specific instructions.
  • Diplomatic or government-to-government matter: Brasília is the embassy location. Use the embassy’s current official channels for routing.

The Department of State’s general guidance describes embassy and consular assistance for U.S. citizens and non-citizens, including emergency support, passport replacement, and U.S. visa assistance. For a particular service, follow the Brazil-specific instructions rather than relying on that broad overview.

What should you do in an emergency?

If you are a U.S. citizen who needs consular help, contact the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate using the after-hours number published for that office on the Brazil listing. The Department of State also lists these general emergency contact numbers:

  • Calling from the United States or Canada: 1-888-407-4747.
  • Calling from elsewhere: +1 202-501-4444.

These are consular contact routes. For immediate medical or law-enforcement response, contact local emergency services.
