Steam does not have a verified current Discovery Queue setting that limits the queue to only genres you choose. To reduce unwanted recommendations, exclude tags in Store Preferences and ignore individual games you do not want to see. To positively select genres—or combine genres you want with tags you want to avoid—use Steam Search. For personalized suggestions based on your play history, use the Interactive Recommender.

What should you change: a store preference, a queue action, or a search filter?

These controls work at different levels. An excluded tag is a broad preference; ignoring a game is a decision about one title; including tags in Search is a way to ask for games with specific characteristics. Choosing the right one matters: excluding an unwanted tag is not the same as selecting a genre you want.

Steam feature Best use How it steers results
Store Preferences Reducing unwanted content across your store view Exclude user tags and review product and mature-content preferences
Discovery Queue Browsing games, particularly new releases Ignore a specific unwanted title, or wishlist or follow a promising one
Steam Search Finding games by chosen genres or tags Include desired tags and exclude unwanted ones, then apply relevant filters
Interactive Recommender Personalized exploration based on play history Adjust tags, popularity and recency, and exclude a played-game outlier from its inputs

Steam’s refreshed-homepage FAQ says, “You can customize your view by setting your store preferences, following game developers, and by ignoring individual games or tags.” That guidance was published in June 2026. It describes several kinds of control, not a guarantee that the Discovery Queue can be restricted to a positive list of genres.

Think of the four surfaces as complementary rather than competing menus. Preferences establish broad boundaries, the queue gives you a quick stream of individual titles, Search lets you construct a precise query, and the Recommender learns from what you have played. Moving to the right surface usually fixes a “wrong genre” problem faster than repeatedly refreshing the queue.

How do you reduce unwanted genres in Store Preferences?

Use Store Preferences to exclude user tags you do not want in your personalized store view. This is the appropriate place for a broad exclusion; it does not create a positive allowlist of genres for the Discovery Queue.

  1. Open Steam’s store homepage. Find the Store Preferences page. Steam’s June 2026 refreshed-homepage guidance identifies Store Preferences as the place to customize the view; exact placement can vary in the signed-in interface.
  2. Review product and content categories. Check the available preferences, including mature-content settings, and change only the categories that reflect what you want to see. Steam says Store Preferences has five mature-content categories; that is a count of content settings, not genre choices.
  3. Review excluded user tags. Exclude tags that reliably describe content you want to avoid. If you sometimes enjoy a broad genre, avoid excluding it just because some games in it are poor matches: a broad exclusion can remove relevant results along with the unwanted ones.
  4. Return to the store and assess the results. Preferences shape your store view, but they are not a request for Steam to show only a selected genre. For that more specific goal, use Search and include the tags you want.

Steam’s June 2026 guidance also mentions following game developers as a way to personalize the store. Following is useful when you want to keep up with a particular developer; it is not a genre filter.

Use exclusions sparingly. A user tag can describe a mood, feature or presentation style rather than a complete genre, and many games carry several tags. Excluding one broad label can therefore remove games that would otherwise be excellent matches. A safer pattern is to exclude a category you consistently avoid, then handle borderline titles individually in the queue.

What Store Preferences can and cannot do

  • They can: remove unwanted user-tag categories from your general store view and adjust product or mature-content preferences.
  • They cannot be treated as: a documented “only show these three genres” switch for the Discovery Queue.
  • They do not replace: a Search query when you need a positive combination such as a desired tag plus an excluded tag.

If you change a preference and do not immediately see a dramatically different page, that does not prove the setting failed. The homepage contains multiple discovery areas, and Steam’s public guidance does not promise that every module refreshes in exactly the same way or at the same time.

How do you handle individual games in the Discovery Queue?

Use the queue’s title-level actions when one recommendation is wrong for you. Ignore a specific game you do not want to see, and wishlist or follow a promising game for a different purpose.

  1. Open the Discovery Queue from the store homepage. Steam’s refreshed homepage allows queue browsing without leaving the homepage. The exact location can vary in the signed-in interface.
  2. Ignore an unwanted title. This tells Steam that the individual game is not a match. Do not assume that ignoring one title will block its genre or every similar game.
  3. Wishlist a game you may want to buy. A wishlist is for keeping track of a potential purchase; it is not the same as ignoring a miss.
  4. Follow a game for updates. Following is useful for announcements about that title. It does not express the same preference as excluding a tag from your store view.

The queue is particularly useful for browsing new releases. Steam has described it as a way to discover those games, while noting that the Interactive Recommender cannot recommend a new release that nobody has been played yet.

Use the queue as a triage tool. When a title is clearly irrelevant, ignore it and continue. When it looks promising but you are not ready to buy, wishlist it. When you mainly want announcements, follow it. These actions communicate different intentions, so using the right one keeps your library, wishlist and recommendation signals cleaner.

Ignoring a title is deliberately narrow. Steam’s guidance separates ignoring individual games from ignoring tags, and it does not say that one ignored game suppresses every other title with the same tags. If ten games in a row miss for the same reason, that pattern is a reason to consider a Store Preference exclusion or a Search exclusion, not evidence that the first ignored title should have changed the whole queue.

How do you find games in a genre you choose with Steam Search?

Use Steam Search when you want to specify what should appear, rather than only what should be excluded. Steam documents both tag inclusion and tag exclusion in Search, making it the clearest option for a “show me this, but not that” query.

  1. Open Steam Search from the store. Start a search for games, then locate its tag and filter controls. The current button labels may vary; Steam’s published Search guidance establishes the include-and-exclude capability, not every current label.
  2. Include the tags that describe the games you want. Add one or more relevant tags. Tags are more specific than relying on the Discovery Queue to infer a genre preference.
  3. Exclude tags that describe unwanted results. This lets you combine a desired genre or style with exclusions, rather than removing a broad category from your overall store view.
  4. Narrow the results with applicable filters. Steam Search also offers filters such as price and language. Hide games you already own, have ignored, or have wishlisted if those titles clutter the results. A VR filter is also described in Steam’s Search guidance.
  5. Bookmark a useful search. Steam describes the option to bookmark a specific search, which can make a useful combination of tags and filters easier to revisit.

For example, you can include a role-playing tag, add a turn-based or strategy tag if that is the style you want, and exclude a tag associated with a setting or mechanic you avoid. The exact tags are your choice; the important distinction is that inclusion asks Search for desired characteristics while exclusion removes unwanted ones. You can also narrow by price or language after setting tags, and hide already owned, ignored or wishlisted games so the remaining list is easier to evaluate.

Search is a more deliberate way to browse, but it is still a search-results view, not the same personalized feed as the queue or Recommender. If a combination returns too few matches, remove one restrictive tag or filter at a time so you can see which condition is narrowing the list. If it returns too many, add a second descriptive tag or an exclusion instead of relying on a global preference that might affect unrelated store pages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bookmarking is useful for recurring interests. A saved query can preserve a tag combination and other filters, while your Store Preferences remain available for broad exclusions. Keep those roles separate: a bookmarked Search is a repeatable request, not a replacement for the personalized homepage.

How does the Interactive Recommender personalize suggestions?

The Interactive Recommender uses your play history and lets you steer suggestions with tags, popularity and recency controls. It is a better fit than Search when you want personalized discovery, but its recommendations are not identical to the Discovery Queue’s.

  1. Open the Interactive Recommender from Steam’s Your Store menu. Steam’s published description places it there; signed-in interface details may vary.
  2. Adjust the tag controls. Use them to steer the kinds of games the Recommender considers.
  3. Adjust popularity and recency. These controls let you shift between more popular and more niche games, and between recent and classic titles.
  4. Check whether an unusual game in your play history is distorting suggestions. Steam says you can exclude a played game from the Recommender’s inputs. This changes what the Recommender takes into account; it does not change Steam’s global ignore setting for that game.
  5. Review saved settings. Steam says saved Recommender settings affect homepage recommendations, so adjustments can influence more than the results displayed while using the tool.

The Recommender is not a substitute for the queue when your priority is new releases: it cannot recommend a game that nobody has played. Use it to explore games connected to your play history, and return to the queue when you want its new-release discovery role.

Popularity and recency are useful balancing controls. A popular setting can surface established games with substantial player histories, while a more niche setting can move toward less widely played titles. A recent setting emphasizes newer releases among games with enough history for the system to evaluate; a classic setting moves in the opposite direction. These are discovery biases, not guarantees about quality or release date.

If one unusual play in your account is producing irrelevant results, exclude that game inside the Recommender instead of globally ignoring it. Steam specifically distinguishes this input exclusion from the store-wide ignore action. That lets the game remain visible in other contexts while preventing it from dominating personalized suggestions.

Can you make the Discovery Queue show only your chosen genres?

Steam’s current public guidance does not establish a queue-only control that restricts the queue to a positive list of genres. You can exclude unwanted tags through Store Preferences, but for an explicit genre selection, Steam Search is the documented tool to include desired tags.

Older Steam material from 2014 described queue options involving Early Access, unreleased games and operating systems. Those historical controls do not confirm the labels or availability of queue settings in the 2026 interface, so they should not be treated as a current click path.

This distinction prevents a common troubleshooting mistake. If a guide tells you to look for an exact “genre-only queue” checkbox, you may spend time hunting for a control Steam has not publicly confirmed for the current interface. Start with Store Preferences for exclusions, use Search for positive genre combinations, and use the Recommender when play history is the signal you want.

Which Steam discovery tool should you use?

  • Use Store Preferences when the goal is to reduce unwanted tags or adjust product and mature-content preferences broadly.
  • Use the Discovery Queue for low-effort browsing and new-release discovery, and respond to individual titles one at a time.
  • Use Search when you want to include specific genres or tags, combine them with exclusions, or narrow results with filters.
  • Use the Interactive Recommender when you want play-history-based suggestions and controls for tags, popularity, recency or an outlier game in your history.
If your goal is… Start here Why

Remove one bad recommendation Queue ignore action It addresses the individual title without making a broad exclusion.

The signed-in Store Preferences, queue and Recommender pages redirected a signed-out visitor to login. Consequently, Steam’s public guidance supports the capabilities described here, but it does not establish every current account-specific placement or label. If a control is not where expected, use Steam’s store navigation rather than relying on an older screenshot or a historical queue guide.

A practical routine for cleaner recommendations

  1. Set broad boundaries once. In Store Preferences, review mature-content and product settings and exclude only tags you consistently avoid.
  2. Use the queue for fast decisions. Ignore clear misses, wishlist possible purchases and follow games whose announcements matter to you.
  3. Build a Search query for a specific mood. Include the genre or feature tags you want, exclude the tags you do not, apply price or language filters, and hide titles already owned, ignored or wishlisted when useful.
  4. Bookmark repeatable searches. This saves a precise combination without changing your general store view.
  5. Use the Recommender for exploration. Adjust tags, popularity and recency, and remove an atypical played game from its inputs if it is skewing results.
  6. Return to the queue for new releases. The Recommender cannot surface a brand-new game that nobody has played, so the two tools fill different gaps.

There is no separate purchase, controller or hardware requirement for these filtering methods. Steam’s refreshed homepage mentions controller and Steam Deck navigation, but buying a Deck or controller does not add a genre filter. A gift card can fund a later purchase, yet it does not alter discovery settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does ignoring a Steam game hide every game with the same tag?

Steam’s guidance describes ignoring individual games and ignoring tags as separate ways to customize the store. It does not say that ignoring one title automatically hides all games sharing its tags.

Why are some new games missing from the Interactive Recommender?

Steam says the Recommender cannot suggest a new release that nobody has been played yet. A game’s absence there does not by itself mean it is excluded by your tag preferences.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Can Steam Search remember a genre filter I use often?

Steam describes bookmarking a specific search, so a useful combination of tags and filters can be saved for easier return. That is separate from saving recommendation preferences in the Interactive Recommender.

Where are Steam’s mature-content settings?

Steam places five mature-content categories near the top of Store Preferences, according to its refreshed-homepage guidance. These settings concern content preferences rather than a selection of genres.

Can I select only one or two genres for the Discovery Queue?

Steam’s current public guidance confirms excluded tags and individual-title actions, but not a queue-only positive genre allowlist. Use Search with included tags when you need that level of selection.

What is the difference between wishlist and follow?

Wishlist a game to keep track of a potential purchase. Follow it when you mainly want announcements. Neither action is equivalent to excluding a tag or ignoring a title.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will excluding a tag remove games from every Steam page?

Store Preferences customize your store view, but Steam does not promise that every discovery surface uses identical rules. For a precise list, apply tag exclusions directly in Search.

Why did an ignored game influence my recommendations?

Ignoring a title in the queue is an individual-game action. If a played game is distorting Interactive Recommender results, exclude that game from the Recommender’s inputs as a separate step.

Can the Interactive Recommender replace the Discovery Queue?

No. The Recommender uses play history and adjustable popularity, recency and tag controls, while the queue is especially useful for new releases, including games with no play history yet.

I cannot find the control shown in an old guide. What should I do?

Steam’s interface can change, and older material from 2014 is not proof of the exact 2026 queue controls. Start from the current store navigation and use the documented roles of Store Preferences, Search and the Recommender.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need a Steam Deck or controller to filter genres?

No. These are built-in Steam store features. Hardware navigation may be supported, but purchasing a Deck or controller does not provide a genre-filter switch.

The Bottom Line

Use Store Preferences to exclude tags you consistently avoid, the Discovery Queue to dismiss or save individual titles, Steam Search to include genres and combine exclusions, and the Interactive Recommender to tune play-history-based suggestions. Steam has not verified a current queue-only setting that shows only selected genres.
