Tune by AKG is best understood as AKG’s Personi‑Fi 2.0 personalization system. On supported headphones, the AKG Headphones app asks setup questions, plays nine test tones in each ear, measures the quietest level you can detect for every tone, and calculates a sound curve tailored to you. You can then play familiar music and switch the profile on or off to compare the result.
The current over-ear example is the AKG N9 Hybrid, which combines Personi‑Fi 2.0 with adaptive noise cancelling, spatial audio, app and voice controls, and wired or wireless listening. AKG also explicitly lists the N5 Hybrid as a supported model. Personalization is a consumer listening feature, not a clinical hearing examination.
What is Tune by AKG?
“Tune by AKG” is not a separate audio format or a single headphone model. In current AKG documentation, the relevant technology is called Personi‑Fi 2.0: an in-app hearing-profile process that adjusts playback to the way an individual listener detects different frequencies.
Human ears do not all respond identically. Age, listening history, ear shape, fit and ordinary biological variation can change how loud a bass, midrange or treble tone seems. Personi‑Fi 2.0 attempts to account for those differences by measuring your responses ear by ear rather than applying one factory EQ curve to everyone.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The result is a calculated sound curve stored and controlled through the AKG Headphones app. It is intended to make music sound more balanced to you; it does not diagnose hearing loss, replace an audiologist or certify safe listening levels.
How does AKG Personi‑Fi 2.0 work?
Personi‑Fi 2.0 uses a short, interactive threshold test. The app presents tones at multiple frequencies, records the lowest level at which you report hearing each one, and uses those measurements to create a correction curve.
What the test measures
- Questions first: the app collects setup information before the tones begin.
- Nine frequencies per ear: each ear receives nine test tones, for 18 tone checks in total.
- Detection threshold: you press the control when a tone becomes audible. The app records the lowest level you can detect for that frequency.
- Personalized curve: the measurements are processed into a sound curve intended for your listening profile.
- A/B comparison: after calibration, you can play a track and toggle the personalized result on and off.
Because the process depends on your button presses and the acoustic environment, it should be treated as a listening calibration, not a laboratory measurement. If a tone is difficult to hear, respond only when you genuinely detect it rather than guessing.

Use this sequence on a supported AKG model. The labels can change slightly as the app is updated, but the process follows the same order.
- Connect the headphones. Pair the supported model with your phone and open the AKG Headphones app.
- Start Personi‑Fi. Open the personalization or Personi‑Fi control in the device screen and begin setup.
- Answer the setup questions. Complete the questions shown by the app before the tone test.
- Move somewhere quiet. Use a room with minimal speech, traffic, fans and other continuous noise. Keep the ear cups or earbuds positioned normally and make a good seal.
- Run the left- and right-ear tone checks. The app plays nine frequencies to each ear. Press the on-screen control as soon as each tone becomes audible, then wait for the next one.
- Let the app calculate the curve. Do not remove the headphones while processing finishes.
- Check the result with music. Play a familiar track and use the Personi‑Fi on/off control to compare the personalized and unpersonalized sound.
How to get a more reliable result
- Keep the headphone fit consistent from start to finish; a loose seal can change perceived bass and background isolation.
- Do not run the test while another person is speaking nearby or while loud appliances are operating.
- Use the same listening volume you normally use only after calibration; the tone test itself is about audibility thresholds, not your preferred music loudness.
- If one side is repeatedly difficult to fit, reseat the headphone or earbud before accepting the measurement.
Personi‑Fi 2.0 is not a hearing-health screening. Sudden changes in hearing, persistent ringing or difficulty understanding speech should be discussed with a qualified hearing professional rather than “corrected” in the app.
Which AKG headphones support Personi‑Fi 2.0?
AKG’s support documentation specifically names the AKG N5 Hybrid and AKG N9 Hybrid for Personi‑Fi 2.0. The support list is model-specific, so the presence of an AKG Headphones app control does not by itself prove that every AKG product offers the same calibration.

What does the AKG Headphones app control?
The app is the main control surface for supported headphones. Its listing describes controls for headphone settings, smart ambient features and noise cancelling, while N9 Hybrid materials add more specific options.
Personalization and sound
Personi‑Fi setup, the personalized curve and the on/off comparison are handled in the app. N9 Hybrid materials also describe sound-level optimization and spatial-audio controls. The exact names and placement of these controls can vary by model and software version.
Noise and ambient modes
On compatible models, you can adjust adaptive noise cancelling and ambient sound. These modes alter what reaches your ears from the outside world; they are separate from the Personi‑Fi curve, which changes playback equalization based on your tone responses.
Voice and call controls
The N9 Hybrid uses adaptive beamforming microphones to monitor environmental noise during calls. Its Voice Aware control lets you choose how much of your own voice you hear. Smart Talk pauses audio when the headphones detect that you have started speaking.

What does the AKG N9 Hybrid add beyond personalization?
The N9 Hybrid is the clearest current example of headphones built around Personi‑Fi 2.0. Its feature set matters because personalization is only one part of the listening experience.
Adaptive noise cancelling
True Adaptive Noise Cancelling continuously responds to surrounding sound rather than relying only on a fixed isolation setting. This is useful on commutes, in offices and during travel, but ANC performance still depends on ear-cup fit and the type of noise present.
Spatial audio
N9 Hybrid materials include spatial-audio support. Spatial processing can change the apparent position and width of sounds, so compare it with spatial audio disabled when judging the effect of Personi‑Fi alone; otherwise two processing changes may be influencing your impression at once.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWireless, wired and dongle connections
The headset supports Bluetooth, a 3.5 mm wired connection and a USB-C dongle. Wired operation is useful when a source has no suitable Bluetooth option or when you want to avoid wireless transmission. The dongle provides a separate low-latency-style connection path for compatible devices, but Smart Talk is not available over 2.4 GHz.
Battery claims
AKG claims up to 100 hours over Bluetooth with ANC off and up to 85 hours through the USB-C dongle with ANC off. These are manufacturer figures presented on the N9 Hybrid product page as current in 2026, not independent laboratory results. Actual runtime will vary with ANC, volume, codec, microphone use, spatial processing and connection type.
How should I compare Personi‑Fi headphones?

| Decision area | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Personalization method | Does the model run Personi‑Fi 2.0, and can I perform the test in its app? | You need explicit model support; a generic EQ does not measure your ear-by-ear thresholds. |
| ANC and ambient control | Is ANC adaptive, and can ambient sound be adjusted? | Noise control changes how consistently you hear both music and the calibration tones. |
| Connectivity | Are Bluetooth, 3.5 mm and USB-C dongle modes available? | Different sources and games may require different connection paths. |
| Call and voice features | Are beamforming microphones, Voice Aware or speech-triggered pausing included? | These features affect meetings and conversations more than music playback. |
| Spatial audio | Can spatial processing be enabled or disabled? | Turning it off helps you isolate the effect of Personi‑Fi when evaluating sound. |
| Comfort and fit | Can you maintain a stable seal for the entire test and for long sessions? | A changing fit can make both the calibration and bass response inconsistent. |
| Battery | What is the manufacturer’s stated runtime, and under which mode? | Battery numbers are conditional claims, not a guarantee of everyday runtime. |
Is the AKG N9 Hybrid worth it for personalized audio?
The N9 Hybrid is a strong fit if you want Personi‑Fi 2.0 together with over-ear isolation, adaptive ANC, spatial audio, voice controls and several connection choices. Its 3.5 mm input and USB-C dongle make it more flexible than a Bluetooth-only design, while the quoted battery figures support long trips when ANC is disabled.

What did AKG’s earlier TruNote system do?
Personalized AKG audio predates Personi‑Fi 2.0. In a January 6, 2015 HARMAN announcement for the AKG N90Q, AKG described TruNote as an automatic calibration system. Microphones inside each ear cup measured the headphone’s frequency response and generated a correction filter.
That history explains the continuity in AKG’s approach: measure the playback system and apply individualized correction instead of assuming every listener and every ear cup behaves identically. TruNote and Personi‑Fi 2.0 are different generations and should not be treated as the same feature, but both aim to move beyond a one-size-fits-all tuning.
In the same 2015 announcement, Quincy Jones said: “There are only 12 notes, and no matter what genre of music you are enjoying, whether it be Jazz, R&B, Pop, Rock or Classical, I believe the enhanced experience provided by the N90Q will offer the listener such exact sound and customization that you will believe you are in a professional recording studio.”
What are the main limitations and troubleshooting steps?
The profile sounds too bright, dull or bass-heavy
First compare the same familiar track with Personi‑Fi switched off. If the difference is extreme, rerun the test in a quieter room, check the fit on both ears and respond only when each tone is clearly audible. Also check whether spatial audio or another sound mode is enabled, because those processes alter the presentation independently of the personalization curve.

The tone test keeps failing
Confirm that the headphones are connected to the phone running the app, close other audio apps and update the AKG Headphones app. Re-seat the headphones and repeat the test without changing position between tones. If the model is not one of AKG’s documented Personi‑Fi 2.0 devices, the personalization control may not be available even though the app supports that model for other settings.
Smart Talk does not pause music
On the N9 Hybrid, verify the connection type. AKG states that Smart Talk is unavailable with a 2.4 GHz connection, so switch to a supported Bluetooth path if you need speech-triggered pausing.
Battery life is below the headline number
The 100-hour Bluetooth and 85-hour USB-C figures assume ANC is off and represent “up to” manufacturer claims. ANC, high volume, calls, spatial audio and other processing reduce runtime; compare your use with those conditions before treating the difference as a fault.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I run Personi‑Fi 2.0 with any AKG headphone that appears in the app?
No. The app supports many AKG models for general settings, but AKG specifically documents Personi‑Fi 2.0 for the N9 Hybrid and N5 Hybrid. Feature availability can also depend on app version and region, so confirm support for the exact model you own.
How often should I repeat the Personi‑Fi calibration?
AKG does not publish a fixed recalibration interval in the documented material. Repeat it when your fit changes, after a major app or headphone update, or when the personalized result no longer sounds consistent; use the same quiet conditions each time.
Can Personi‑Fi create separate profiles for different listeners?
The cited AKG information describes creating and toggling a personalized curve but does not state how many listener profiles a supported headset can store. If several people share the headphones, check the current app interface before assuming it can save independent profiles.
Does Personi‑Fi work through a 3.5 mm cable?
The N9 Hybrid supports 3.5 mm wired listening, but the available information does not specify whether Personi‑Fi processing remains active in every wired configuration. Check the app and model manual for the exact behavior of the source and connection mode you plan to use.
