Train Sim World 7 is the better purchase for most players on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, but try its Free Starter Edition before paying. Standard is the sensible tier if you want the three new routes. Deluxe is for players who also want the Class 333, ICE 4 and GP49H-3, while Ultimate is mainly for newcomers who want selected Train Sim World 6 content included. Existing TSW6 owners can claim TSW7’s free base game and carry eligible add-ons to the same platform account. Stay with TSW6 if you use PS4 or Xbox One, already have the routes you want, or specifically need a boxed PS5 copy.
What is the difference between Train Sim World 7 and Train Sim World 6?
TSW7 is a new annual edition built on the same simulation foundation, not a completely different game engine. It adds new routes, a freight-focused activity type, easier controls, dynamic weather and several presentation and AI improvements. TSW6 remains playable, but Dovetail says it will receive no further updates and newly released content will not work with it. [Official TSW7 FAQ]
Train Sim World 6 released on September 30, 2025. Dovetail’s TSW7 release FAQ gives September 15, 2026 as the newer game’s release date. That date is the clearest reference for buyers comparing the two versions. TSW7 is therefore a released product, not an announced upgrade that is still waiting for launch.

The practical difference is as much about ownership as features. TSW7 is the entry point for newly released routes and trains, while TSW6 is now a finished product. If your favorite content is already in TSW6, the newer menu and graphics options alone may not justify paying again. If you want future add-ons, TSW7 is the version Dovetail is continuing to support.

What new gameplay features does TSW7 add?
TSW7’s headline changes affect how you operate trains and how services behave around you. They are meaningful quality-of-life additions, but they do not turn every older route into a new TSW7 feature showcase.
Freight Hauler
Freight Hauler provides a more flexible way to assemble and operate freight work. At launch it was restricted to TSW7’s new routes, although locomotives that can be spawned in Free Roam may still be used there. Do not assume an older TSW6 route supports Freight Hauler unless a later route-specific update says so. This distinction matters if you are buying TSW7 mainly for a new activity type: the feature is not automatically applied to every route in your library.
Beginner Controls
Beginner Controls simplify driving for people who find full simulation controls intimidating. Dovetail initially made the option available in Timetable and Free Roam modes. Experienced drivers can continue using the detailed control scheme. The setting is best viewed as an onboarding option rather than a separate difficulty campaign, so check the mode you are selecting if a control prompt appears to be missing.
Live Weather
Live Weather links conditions to a route location rather than using only a fixed scenario setting. It requires a Dovetail Live connection, and Dovetail says all routes are compatible with the weather option. Conditions can therefore become a reason to revisit familiar services, but they are not a promise of a particular forecast or performance outcome. Players who regularly play offline should treat Live Weather as an optional connected feature, not a reason by itself to replace an otherwise satisfactory TSW6 installation.
AI Conductors and door operation
AI Conductors make station work less dependent on the player. AI-operated door functions are also designed to make platform stops feel more like a staffed railway operation. These systems can reduce repetitive platform tasks while leaving the driver responsible for the actual service. They are especially relevant to players who enjoy timetable operations but want less manual interruption between runs.
Safety systems, lighting and PC graphics
TSW7 includes a default safety-systems toggle, enhanced lighting and additional PC graphics options. On PC, the publisher lists DirectX 12, DLSS 4.5, FSR 4, longer draw distances and an Epic graphics preset. TSW7 still uses Unreal Engine 4 according to Dovetail’s route documentation; it is not an Unreal Engine 5 rebuild.
The Epic preset is optional. Dovetail recommends at least an NVIDIA RTX 5070 or AMD RX 9070 when pursuing it, while ordinary minimum and recommended requirements are unchanged from TSW6. Those recommendations are for the publisher’s target setting, not a guaranteed frame rate; route complexity and settings affect actual performance. A community modder, Jetwash of Firefly Simulations, said the lighting changes “really make a huge difference to the way the game looks,” but that is an attributed opinion rather than an independent benchmark.

Consider the RTX 5070 or RX 9070 path only if you specifically want the Epic preset, higher draw distances and the newer upscaling options at your preferred resolution. What features did TSW6 already introduce?
TSW6 is not simply TSW5 with a new menu. It introduced random faults and events, more detailed announcements and stronger passenger ambience. Those systems remain part of the TSW6 experience and should not be presented as TSW7 additions.
If your main interest is a more reactive railway on the existing TSW6 routes, you may find that the older edition already provides what you want. TSW7’s advantage is the combination of new routes and forward compatibility, not a wholesale replacement of every older system. A player who mainly drives the Morristown Line, Leipzig–Dresden, Nahverkehr Dresden or Riviera Line can continue doing so in TSW6 without losing those core features.
Which routes and locomotives do the TSW7 editions include?
The paid editions differ primarily by content entitlement. They use the same TSW7 executable; buying a more expensive tier does not unlock a separate simulation engine or a different control model.

At those published prices, Standard-to-Deluxe costs $30 and Deluxe-to-Ultimate costs another $50. Those are useful comparison points, but they are not permanent store prices. Check the PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, Epic or Microsoft PC storefront you actually use before buying, especially when a sale changes the gap between editions.
The Nürnberg–Würzburg route is described by Dovetail as more than 100 km long. That is a publisher specification, not an independently measured distance. Separately sold TSW7 routes and locomotives can be paired with the Free Starter Edition; Dovetail recommends owning the associated route for the full intended experience of a separately purchased locomotive.
Ultimate does not mean every TSW6 Special Edition extra. It contains the TSW6 content listed in Dovetail’s edition table, so check that list against your existing library before paying the premium. If you already own one of the included routes or locomotives, do not assume the store will automatically reduce the bundle price. Compare the current standalone prices with the complete bundle total instead.

Do TSW6 add-ons carry over to TSW7?
Generally, eligible TSW6 add-ons carry over when you use the same storefront account and platform family. A PlayStation purchase does not become an Xbox or PC entitlement, and a TSW7 purchase does not grant access to an older base game you never owned. Disc-included add-ons may require a product-key claim through support. Consult Dovetail’s compatible-content guide for the item-by-item rules.
- Install or claim the TSW7 Free Starter Edition on the account that owns your DLC.
- Use the same platform account you used for TSW6.
- Redownload eligible routes and locomotives from your library or the in-game content manager.
- Allow entitlement checks to finish before assuming an item is missing.
- If a disc code is not recognized, keep proof of purchase and submit the code through Dovetail support rather than buying the add-on again.
Ownership transfer is not the same as save-game conversion. The safe expectation is that your entitlements follow the account; do not assume every timetable, scenario state or local save transfers between platforms. Likewise, moving from a PlayStation version to the PC version generally requires checking the separate storefront entitlement rather than expecting a cross-platform license.
TSW7’s Free Starter Edition is the current way to test the new base game. Do not confuse it with the older TSW6 free-starter promotion, which has ended. An existing owner can use TSW7 Free to verify that the account recognizes eligible add-ons before deciding whether to buy Standard, Deluxe or individual content.

Which game should PS4 and Xbox One owners buy?
Choose TSW6 unless you are moving to newer hardware. TSW7 does not support PS4 or Xbox One, while TSW6 supports both older console families as well as PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. A TSW7 edition cannot solve a platform-generation limitation through an upgrade or add-on.
On current consoles, the choice is about content and support rather than a mandatory hardware upgrade. TSW7 is available on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, plus Steam, Epic and Xbox PC. If your household owns more than one platform, keep purchases tied to the platform where you intend to play: eligible DLC normally follows the same account and platform family, not every device you own.
Can you buy Train Sim World 7 on disc?
Dovetail’s support statement says, “Currently, we have no plans to release a boxed copy of Train Sim World 7.” Plan on a digital purchase for TSW7. TSW6 has documented regional boxed PS5 editions, although the included additional-locomotive codes vary between US, German and UK versions and may depend on the seller and region. Verify the disc region, code status and platform before buying a used copy.
For a collector who specifically wants a physical PS5 case, the documented choice is TSW6, not a TSW7 disc. Do not mistake a TSW6 listing for a physical release of the newer game. When searching marketplaces for Train Sim World 6 PS5 physical edition, confirm whether the advertised copy is a regional release, whether its bonus code has already been redeemed and whether the disc is compatible with your console account.
Is TSW7 worth upgrading from TSW6?
Upgrade when at least one of three things matters to you: the three new routes, TSW7’s new operating systems, or continued access to future compatible releases. The upgrade is less compelling if you only want improved visuals on routes you already own, because the standard system requirements have not changed and the most demanding Epic graphics path is optional.

At Dovetail’s launch prices, Standard-to-Deluxe was a $30 difference and Deluxe-to-Ultimate was another $50. Treat those gaps as a way to value the specific routes and locomotives you will actually use, not as a rating of game quality. Someone who wants only the ICE 4 may regard Deluxe as worthwhile; someone who already owns the relevant TSW6 content may find Ultimate poor value even if the headline bundle appears larger.
There is also no need to buy a paid TSW7 edition simply to access carried-over TSW6 add-ons. Claim Free first, restore eligible content and then purchase a new route, locomotive or edition only when you know what is missing. This is the lowest-risk path for long-time players.
How should PC players decide whether the graphics upgrades matter?
Keep TSW6 if your PC already meets your needs and your priority is existing route content. Choose TSW7 for the optional rendering features only when your hardware and display make them worthwhile. Dovetail’s suggested RTX 5070 or RX 9070 target applies to the Epic preset; it is not a requirement for the standard game.
- Standard settings: unchanged published minimum and recommended requirements make TSW7 the lower-risk upgrade.
- High-end path: DX12, DLSS 4.5, FSR 4, enhanced lighting and wider draw distances are available reasons to prefer TSW7.
- Expect variation: route density, resolution, upscaling mode and driver configuration influence performance; no guaranteed frame-rate uplift follows from the feature list.
Dovetail’s getting-started documentation also lists the RailDriver Desktop Controller as a PC control option. Its controller guide specifically documents use with trains in TSW6 on PC; do not assume console support or train-by-train TSW7 compatibility without checking the current guide. RailDriver is an optional accessory, not a requirement for either edition.

- Write down the TSW6 routes and locomotives you actually use, separating owned DLC from items included only through a disc code.
- Claim TSW7 Free on the same platform account.
- Confirm that your console or PC storefront is supported.
- Download one or two eligible add-ons and check that they appear before purchasing a duplicate bundle.
- Compare the three TSW7 routes with your preferred geography: UK, Germany or Florida.
- Buy Standard unless the Deluxe locomotives or Ultimate’s listed TSW6 content have clear value for you.
This approach avoids paying for a second copy of content you already own and keeps the choice focused on routes, locomotives and platform support. It also exposes problems such as a redeemed disc code, an account mismatch or an unsupported older console before money is committed.
Bottom line: which version should you buy?
Buy TSW7 Standard after trying the Free Starter Edition if you play on PS5, Xbox Series X|S or PC and want the new routes. Select Deluxe only for the Class 333, ICE 4 and GP49H-3; select Ultimate when the included TSW6 material is also valuable and not already in your library. Existing TSW6 owners should claim Free first and purchase selectively. Stay with TSW6 for PS4/Xbox One, a TSW6-only route library, or a physical PS5 requirement.
TSW7 is the forward-looking platform, while TSW6 is the practical legacy choice. The deciding factor is therefore not simply “newer versus older,” but whether your hardware, preferred routes, locomotive interests and physical-media needs match what TSW7 actually includes.

Does Live Weather work offline?
Live Weather requires Dovetail Live, so an offline session cannot provide its location-linked weather service. Other offline gameplay modes may remain available, but they should not be treated as Live Weather sessions.
Are TSW7 locomotives usable on every route?
A locomotive’s practical coverage depends on its timetable, route compatibility and whether it can be spawned in Free Roam. Dovetail recommends the associated route for the complete intended experience, so buying a train alone may provide fewer services than buying its route.
Will my TSW6 save files transfer from PlayStation to PC?
Account entitlements and local save data are different systems. The documented carry-over policy concerns eligible purchased content on the same platform account, not a universal cross-platform save migration.

No. TSW7 Free is the current starter tier and includes Training Center. The earlier TSW6 free-starter promotion has ended, so do not expect that older offer to appear in the TSW6 store listing.
Which edition includes the ICE 4?
The DB BR 412 ICE 4 is included in TSW7 Deluxe and therefore also in Ultimate. It is not part of Standard, although separately sold content can be paired with the Free Starter Edition.
Do I need an RTX 5070 to play TSW7 on PC?
No. Dovetail says ordinary minimum and recommended requirements are unchanged from TSW6. The RTX 5070 or AMD RX 9070 recommendation applies to pursuing the optional Epic graphics preset, not to running the standard game.
Can I buy a boxed PS5 copy of TSW7?
Dovetail currently says it has no plans for a boxed TSW7 release. Documented regional PS5 discs are for TSW6, and their bonus locomotive codes can vary by region and seller.
