Trading in an Xbox changes who possesses the hardware, not who owns the digital entitlements. Your purchased digital games remain tied to the Microsoft account that bought them, and Game Pass remains governed by that account, the active subscription and Home Xbox settings. Sign in to a replacement Xbox with the same account to recover your purchased library and subscription access.
The person who receives your old console does not receive your digital library merely because games are installed on its drive. Before handing the console over, back up anything you need, reset it to remove personal data, and remove or unlink it from your Microsoft account. Then review the Home Xbox setting on the replacement console.
What actually changes when you trade in an Xbox?
The trade-in transfers possession of a physical device and any accessories included in the transaction. It does not transfer your Microsoft account, your account’s user license for purchased games, or your Game Pass subscription rights.

Access is checked against the account and device licenses that govern the content.

Think of the handoff as two separate jobs:
- Preparing the hardware: erase personal data and leave the console ready for its next user.
- Moving your access: sign in on the replacement Xbox with the Microsoft account that holds your purchases and subscription.
Resetting the console does not delete the Microsoft account or its purchased-game user license. Removing the old device from your account also does not cancel Game Pass or erase your digital purchases.
Do I lose Xbox Game Pass if I trade in my Xbox?
No. A trade-in does not itself cancel Game Pass. If the subscription is still active under your Microsoft account and the replacement Xbox is signed in with that account, you can continue using subscription content subject to the plan’s current terms.
Game Pass is not “stored on the console.” The Xbox is an access device; Microsoft’s account and subscription systems determine whether the signed-in user can use Game Pass content. The old console’s buyer does not acquire your subscription simply by receiving the hardware.
What you need to do on the replacement Xbox
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account that owns the Game Pass subscription.
- Confirm that the subscription is active on that account. Trading hardware does not create a new subscription or move a subscription to a different account.
- Review the Home Xbox setting if other people in your household use the console. Sharing behavior depends on which console is designated as Home Xbox and which account is signed in.
If you cancel Game Pass separately, allow the subscription to expire, or sign in with a different account, access can end for reasons unrelated to the trade-in. The hardware exchange itself is not a cancellation event.
Will my purchased digital games transfer to a new Xbox?
Yes, your purchased digital library is available on a replacement Xbox when you use the Microsoft account associated with those purchases. The games do not become property of the console’s next owner, and you do not need to give anyone your account to preserve access.

Microsoft describes two licenses for digital purchases:
| License or access path | What it controls | What happens after a trade-in |
|---|---|---|
| User license | Associates the purchase with the Microsoft account that acquired it. | Remains with that account and can be used on a replacement Xbox after you sign in. |
| Device license | Associates console-based access with the console designated as Home Xbox. | May change when you designate the replacement console as Home Xbox; it does not transfer ownership of the user license to the buyer. |
That distinction explains why the same account can access its library on a replacement console while a different person cannot legitimately claim the games on the traded-in device. Installed files are not a transferable copy of your account rights.

What to expect when you sign in again
After signing in, open your library and download the titles you want on the new hardware. A game that was purchased by another Microsoft account will not become yours merely because it was installed on the old console. Keep using the account that made each purchase.
Do not create a second account for convenience if your goal is to preserve the existing library. The user license follows the original purchasing account, so switching accounts can make a game appear unavailable even though the purchase still exists.
Can the person who buys my old Xbox play my games?
Not as the owner of your digital rights. The buyer receives the physical console and the accessories included in the trade-in, but not your Microsoft account or the user license for your purchases.

A buyer may see game tiles or installed data until the console is reset, and Home Xbox associations can affect what appears accessible for a period of time. That temporary behavior should not be described as a legitimate transfer. The account that owns the user license remains the controlling identity.

Why giving the buyer your account is a bad workaround
Handing over your Microsoft account would expose personal information, payment details, messages, saved credentials and other account data. It would also create an account-ownership dispute: the account is the identity that carries the user license, not a bundle of software that can be sold with the console.
Instead, remove your account from the old device and let the buyer sign in with their own Microsoft account. Your purchases remain available to you on your replacement Xbox.
What does Home Xbox change after a console swap?
Home Xbox determines the device-based part of Microsoft’s sharing model. On the console designated as Home Xbox, other people using that console can receive access to content enabled through the owner’s account, including subscription content, while the owner can also use their account on another console when signed in.
When you trade in the old console, check whether it is still designated as your Home Xbox. Set the replacement console as Home Xbox if household members need console-based sharing there. Leaving the old device selected can produce confusing access results and can give the next user a misleading impression that your games were transferred.

How often can Home Xbox be changed?
Microsoft’s current Digital Goods Rules page states a limit of five Home-console changes during a one-year period. This is a policy limit, not a guarantee that a trade-in retailer or a particular console will behave in a certain way. Plan a console swap before changing the setting, especially if you have already used several changes in the period.
What Home Xbox does not do
- It does not move the purchased-game user license to another Microsoft account.
- It does not sell or transfer your Game Pass subscription to the next console owner.
- It does not make the old console a permanent copy of your digital library.
- It does not replace the need to reset the physical device and remove it from your account before handoff.
How do I remove my account before selling or trading in an Xbox?
Complete both the local reset and the online account cleanup. Microsoft’s sell-or-gift guidance says: “After you’ve backed up and reset your device, you should remove it from your Microsoft account.” These actions address different risks, so do not treat one as a substitute for the other.
- Back up anything you need. Save any personal material, captures or other data you want to keep before erasing the console. Once the reset is complete, local data on the device is removed.
- Remove personal accounts and information through the reset process. On the Xbox, open Settings, go to System and Console info, choose Reset console, and select the option that resets the console and removes everything. Menu wording can vary slightly with system updates; choose the full erase option rather than one that keeps games and apps.
- Wait for the reset to finish. Do not interrupt the process or hand over the console while your profile is still signed in. The goal is to leave the device at its first-use setup state for the next owner.
- Remove the old Xbox from your Microsoft account. Open your Microsoft account’s device-management page, select the traded-in console and choose the available remove-device action. If an unlink option is shown, use it as well.
- Set up the replacement Xbox with the original account. Sign in with the account that owns your games and Game Pass. Review the Home Xbox setting and assign the replacement device if household sharing is required.
- Check the result before relying on it. Confirm that your purchased library appears under the original account and that the subscription status is shown on that account. This confirms that you are using the account carrying the entitlements, rather than depending on leftover data from the old console.
Why both reset and account removal matter
A factory reset prepares the physical Xbox for another person by removing local profiles and personal data. Removing or unlinking the device online cleans up the relationship between that hardware and your Microsoft account. Neither action deletes the account’s purchased-game license.

Act quickly from your Microsoft account’s device-management page and remove or unlink the old console. If your account remains signed in anywhere else, change the account password and review security settings. The exact recovery options depend on the account state and what the recipient has already done, so do not assume that deleting a game or changing a Home Xbox setting alone erased personal information.
If the trade-in has not yet been processed, contact the recipient or retailer and request that the console be held while you complete the reset. Do not send your password or verification codes to anyone claiming they need them to “transfer” your library.

Should I cancel Game Pass before a trade-in?
No. Cancel only if you no longer want the subscription or intend to let it expire. A hardware trade-in does not require cancellation, and canceling would remove subscription access when the current term ends even though your purchased digital games remain associated with your account.
If you are replacing the console immediately, keep the subscription on the account that owns it, sign in on the new Xbox and review Home Xbox sharing. If someone else will use the old console, they should use their own account after the device has been reset.
Which entitlement controls access in each situation?
| Situation | Controlling identity or setting | Correct action |
|---|---|---|
| You bought a game digitally and are moving to a replacement Xbox | The Microsoft account’s user license | Sign in with the purchasing account and access the library there. |
| Household members need to use your purchases on the replacement Xbox | The replacement console’s Home Xbox designation | Review and, when needed, set the replacement as Home Xbox. |
| Game Pass content on the replacement Xbox | Active subscription plus account and Home Xbox rules | Keep the subscription active and use the account that holds it. |
| Games remain installed on the traded-in Xbox | Installation data alone does not grant ownership | Reset the console; the buyer must use their own account and rights. |
| Protecting personal information at handoff | Local console state and online device association | Reset the console, then remove or unlink it from the Microsoft account. |
Common mistakes to avoid during an Xbox trade-in
- Assuming installed means owned: installed files do not transfer the account’s digital rights.
- Giving away the Microsoft account: the account carries the user license and contains personal and security information.
- Resetting without online cleanup: a local erase and account-level device removal are separate actions.
- Forgetting Home Xbox: the old designation can affect sharing behavior after the swap and counts against the annual change limit when you move it.
- Canceling Game Pass unnecessarily: the trade-in itself does not cancel the subscription.
- Using a different account on the replacement: purchases remain with the account that made them, so another account may not show the library.
What should I remember on trade-in day?
Use this short handoff checklist:
- Back up personal data you want to keep.
- Reset the Xbox with the full erase option.
- Remove the old console from your Microsoft account’s device list and unlink it if offered.
- Do not provide your Microsoft account credentials to the buyer or retailer.
- Sign in to the replacement Xbox with the original purchasing account.
- Review Home Xbox if household sharing matters.
- Keep Game Pass active only if you still want its subscription access; the trade-in does not require cancellation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will uninstalling a digital game delete my purchase?
No. Removing the local installation does not remove the purchase from the Microsoft account that acquired it. You can download the title again on a compatible Xbox while signed in with that account.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCan I transfer my digital games by transferring the Xbox account to the buyer?
You should not transfer the account. It is the identity tied to the user license and may contain personal, payment and security information; the buyer should use a separate Microsoft account.
What happens if the old Xbox is still listed as my Home Xbox?
Sharing can continue to reflect the old device association until you change it, which may confuse the next user. Set the replacement as Home Xbox when you need household sharing there, while keeping in mind Microsoft’s five-change limit during a one-year period.
Does a factory reset remove my games from my Microsoft account?
No. The reset removes local profiles and data from that physical console. Your account-based purchase history and user licenses remain available when you sign in elsewhere.
