The best way to clean almost any modern TV screen is to start with one product: a clean, soft, lint-free microfiber cloth. Wipe the powered-off screen gently while dry. If marks remain, use distilled water only when the TV maker’s instructions allow it, putting a small amount on the cloth rather than spraying the panel. A second dry microfiber cloth can help with permitted damp cleaning; a mild neutral detergent is a narrowly documented exception for some models, not a universal recommendation. Generic screen wipes, glass cleaner, alcohol, ammonia, acetone, solvents, paper towels and abrasive pads can damage coatings or allow liquid into the set. What are the five products to clean a TV screen?
There are five useful product categories, but they are not five equally necessary cleaners. A microfiber cloth is the everyday tool. Use the exact model’s care instructions as the deciding authority. OLED, LCD, anti-glare and other coated surfaces can have different restrictions, and a general page for one television family does not automatically apply to another.

- Find the model number on the rear label, the original documentation or the TV’s settings menu.
- Open the manufacturer’s support page for that model and look for screen-care or cleaning instructions.
- Start with dry microfiber cleaning unless the instructions explicitly allow moisture.
- If liquids, detergents or commercial wipes are not mentioned, do not assume they are safe.
Sony’s general OLED/LCD guidance says to use a dry, clean microfiber cloth, avoid applying cleansers directly and check with Sony before using commercial screen-cleaning products or electronics wipes: Sony’s TV-care guidance. How do I clean a TV screen safely, step by step?
Follow this sequence for a routine clean. It minimizes heat, pressure and the chance of liquid entering the television.
- Turn the TV off. Unplug it and let it cool for a few minutes. Sony also instructs users to turn the set off and unplug it; Samsung US includes the cool-down step in its procedure: Samsung’s US cleaning instructions.
- Inspect the surface in angled light. Identify loose dust, fingerprints or dried spots before touching the panel. Do not scrape a spot with a fingernail or a hard tool.
- Use a clean, dry microfiber cloth first. Fold the cloth so you have a broad, soft surface and wipe with very light, straight passes. A cloth that has collected grit, grease or fabric softener can transfer particles, so replace or wash it according to its care instructions.
- Check the result. If the screen is clean, stop. Extra rubbing creates risk without improving the picture.
- For a remaining mark, verify liquid is allowed for your model. If the instructions do not permit damp cleaning, stay with a dry microfiber cloth or contact the manufacturer.
- Dampen the cloth, never the TV. Apply a small amount of approved distilled water to the cloth and wring or blot it so it is only slightly damp. Samsung’s explicit warning is: “Never spray water directly onto the TV.”
- Wipe gently, then dry immediately. Use a second clean, dry microfiber cloth if your model’s instructions call for one. Do not press harder on a stubborn patch.
- Let the set dry completely before reconnecting it. Samsung says to allow the TV to dry fully before plugging it back in. If liquid has run toward an edge, port or vent, leave the TV unplugged and seek manufacturer or qualified service advice rather than powering it on.

When is distilled water appropriate?
Distilled water is a secondary option, not the default cleaner. Use it only after dry wiping fails and only where your TV maker permits it.

Samsung’s approach
Samsung US recommends turning the TV off, gently wiping the screen and frame with a microfiber cloth, then using distilled water on the cloth if dry wiping is insufficient. The water must never be sprayed onto the display, and the set should dry completely before reconnection: Samsung US support.
Sony’s approach
Sony’s general OLED/LCD page recommends a dry microfiber cloth and says to check with the manufacturer before using commercial cleaners. A Sony UK page for a cited OLED model describes distilled water, or distilled water with one drop of neutral detergent, applied to a microfiber cloth and followed by immediate drying: Sony UK support. That is not a blanket instruction for every Sony television, so use the page for your exact model.
Why not substitute other water or a spray bottle?
The manufacturer instructions in these sources specifically name distilled water where damp cleaning is allowed. They do not establish tap water as an equivalent, and spraying any liquid creates a path toward seams, controls and ports. If your model documentation does not mention water, do not improvise a liquid-cleaning method.
Should I use a second microfiber cloth?
A second dry microfiber cloth is useful only when your model allows damp cleaning. It lets you remove residual moisture immediately instead of leaving streaks to evaporate on the coating. For ordinary dry dusting, one clean cloth is sufficient; buying a second cloth is an optional convenience, not a requirement.

Can a mild detergent clean stubborn fingerprints?
Only a narrowly described manufacturer exception supports this approach. Sony UK’s cited instructions describe one drop of neutral detergent diluted in distilled water, applied to a microfiber cloth and followed by immediate drying. Because detergent strength and screen coatings vary, do not carry that recipe over to another brand or model without explicit confirmation.
Never pour detergent onto the screen or cloth in an undiluted form. If the exact instructions do not mention detergent, use dry microfiber cleaning or ask the manufacturer what it approves.
Why are common household cleaners risky?
Television panels are not ordinary windows. Their coatings and layered construction can be damaged by chemicals, abrasion, pressure or liquid intrusion.

- Scouring powder, abrasive pads and paper towels: They can leave scratches or lint and encourage pressing harder.
- Generic electronics wipes or screen sprays: Sony says to confirm suitability with the TV manufacturer before use.
- Directly sprayed liquid: It can run behind the bezel or into ports and controls. Put permitted moisture on the cloth instead.
Do not infer safety from a label that says “screen safe.” Compatibility with a phone, laptop or monitor does not prove compatibility with your TV’s coating.

How do I clean the frame, bezel and other TV surfaces?
Do not assume that advice for the display applies unchanged to the frame, rear panel or controls. Samsung UK distinguishes screen cleaning from damp cleaning of the TV body or panel. Use a separate section of the model’s instructions for those surfaces, keep liquid away from openings and avoid letting a damp cloth touch buttons, speakers, vents or ports.
If you are cleaning a wall-mounted television, support the cloth with your hand rather than pushing the panel backward. A soft dry microfiber cloth is still the safest starting point for the bezel and frame unless the manufacturer specifies another method.

- Power down and reassess the cloth. A cloth containing dust, fabric softener or grease can create streaks. Replace it with a clean, lint-free microfiber cloth.
- Check for excess moisture. A cloth that is wet rather than barely damp can leave a film and increase the chance of liquid entering the set. Keep the TV unplugged until fully dry.
- Do not press harder. Samsung warns that pressure can damage the fragile screen. Repeat a light pass instead of scrubbing.
- Do not layer chemicals. Mixing a commercial spray, detergent and water can leave residues and makes compatibility impossible to assess.
- Distinguish a mark from panel damage. If a spot remains after gentle, approved cleaning, it may be a coating defect, scratch or internal issue rather than dirt. Stop cleaning and contact the manufacturer.
What should I look for when buying a microfiber cloth?
Choose a cloth described as soft, clean and lint-free, with no abrasive texture or hard edging. A dedicated screen cloth is easier to keep free of grit than one used on kitchen surfaces, automotive parts or dusty furniture. Keep it in a closed, clean place and retire it when it feels rough or carries embedded particles.

Buying several “screen cleaners” is unnecessary. One suitable cloth covers routine maintenance; a second cloth is useful for drying only if your model permits damp cleaning. Distilled water is a conditional consumable, while detergent and commercial wipes should be purchased only after model-specific approval.
