Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream does not use one shared island for the whole Nintendo Switch. Nintendo says each local user has a separate island and one save file. To protect or move an established island, the documented route is Save Data Cloud on a Nintendo Switch Online account, then downloading that backup on another console signed in with the same Nintendo Account. A different profile, the same game card, or a fresh game download will not reveal another user’s island.
There are two separate exceptions to understand: Nintendo supports carrying demo (Welcome Version) progress into the full game after purchase, and Nintendo separately says Mii data created in this game cannot be transferred to another Switch console or software such as Miitopia. Those are not the same as moving a completed island.
Are Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream islands shared between Switch profiles?
No. Nintendo’s Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream FAQ says save data and islands are created separately for each user registered on the system. Each user has one save file, so launching the game under another local profile is not a way to access the first profile’s island.
That means a family Switch can contain several independent Tomodachi Life islands, one per user. Characters, relationships, buildings and progress belong to the save associated with the user who created them. The console itself is not a single shared island.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Before troubleshooting a “missing” island, select the original user on the Switch HOME screen and start the game there. If that user was deleted, replaced or linked differently, do not assume another profile can recover the island; Nintendo’s per-user rule is the controlling limitation.
Can I transfer my Tomodachi Life island to another Switch?
Nintendo documents Save Data Cloud as the cross-console recovery method for supported save data. The destination console must be linked to the same Nintendo Account context used for the backup, and Nintendo Switch Online is required for the cloud-backup service.
Nintendo’s general Save Data Cloud documentation says a backed-up save can be downloaded on another console linked to the same Nintendo Account. The game’s product information repeats that a Nintendo Switch Online membership, sold separately, is required for Save Data Cloud backup.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This is different from a local system-to-system transfer. The title-specific material available for this game does not provide a complete, verified sequence for a “Transfer Your Save Data” menu flow. Do not publish or rely on an exact Tomodachi Life transfer-menu recipe unless Nintendo supplies one for the version and consoles involved.
What to do before changing consoles
- Identify the island’s user. On the old Switch, confirm which local user opens the island you want. Do not proceed under a different profile.
- Confirm the Nintendo Account. Check that this user is linked to the Nintendo Account you will use on the destination console.
- Keep Nintendo Switch Online active. The membership is a requirement for Save Data Cloud backup for this title.
- Create or verify the cloud backup before resetting the old console. Use Nintendo’s system Save Data Cloud controls for the relevant user and software, then confirm that the backup exists.
- Set up the destination console with the same account and user context. Download the backed-up save through Nintendo’s Save Data Cloud controls before disposing of, wiping or giving away the original hardware.
The exact menu labels can vary between Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 system software. The important, documented requirements are the correct user, the same Nintendo Account and an available Save Data Cloud backup—not simply owning the game.

Does Tomodachi Life have cloud saves?
It has a documented Save Data Cloud backup path, provided the save is supported and the user has Nintendo Switch Online. Nintendo says users can back up save data online and download it on another console linked to the same Nintendo Account.
Nintendo’s service documentation also limits cloud storage to one save-data file per software title for each Nintendo Account. In practical terms, do not treat one account as a way to maintain several independently backed-up Tomodachi Life islands for the same game. Separate local profiles may have separate islands, but the cloud service’s per-account limit still matters.

Cloud backup is protection against a console failure or a move to another console; it is not a sharing mechanism between family profiles. A second profile on the same Switch does not gain access to the backed-up island merely because the software is installed there.
Can I move a demo island into the full game?
Yes. Nintendo’s launch information and the official product listing say that, after you purchase the full game, save data from the demo (also called the Welcome Version) can carry over so you can continue where you left off.
This is a demo-to-full-game progression transfer. It does not establish a general way to share an island between local users, export a finished island to another game or move Mii data independently. Keep the demo and full version associated with the same user while completing the upgrade process, and follow the on-screen prompts presented by the game.

If the carryover option does not appear, first check that you are using the user who played the demo and that the full game is being launched on the same system account context. Nintendo’s published material confirms the carryover feature, but it does not promise that a demo save can be merged with an unrelated user’s existing full-game save.

No, not according to Nintendo’s FAQ for this title. Nintendo says Mii data created in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream cannot be transferred to a Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch console, or to other software such as Miitopia.
This restriction is separate from save-data backup. A cloud-backed island may be recoverable on another console under the documented account conditions, while the Mii data created inside the game remains subject to Nintendo’s transfer restriction. Do not promise that restoring the save will create an exportable Mii in the system Mii Maker or another game.
Also avoid applying assumptions from the older Nintendo 3DS Tomodachi Life. The relevant rules here are Nintendo’s published rules for the 2026 Switch and Switch 2 release.
What is the difference between the three transfer and backup options?
| Scenario | What it solves | Requirements or limits | What Nintendo’s documentation supports |
|---|---|---|---|
| Demo save to full game | Continues Welcome Version progress after buying the full game | Requires purchasing the full game and using the appropriate user context | Nintendo says demo save data can carry over |
| Save Data Cloud | Backs up and recovers supported island save data across consoles | Nintendo Switch Online; destination console linked to the same Nintendo Account; one cloud save file per software title/account | Nintendo documents online backup and cross-console download |
| Local console transfer | May address a broader system migration | The reviewed Tomodachi Life sources do not provide a complete title-specific menu sequence | Do not describe an unverified game-specific flow as guaranteed |
Choose based on the problem you actually have. A demo player needs carryover into the purchased game. An established-island owner changing hardware should prioritize a verified Save Data Cloud backup. Neither option exports Mii data to another title.

Which version should I install before relying on a save?
Nintendo lists Ver. 1.0.4 as the latest update in the reviewed update history, released July 22, 2026. Its notes include a fix for a rare issue in which using Island Builder could corrupt save data and prevent the game from starting during later sessions.
That note is a reason to keep the game updated, not evidence that every island is in danger. Update the software before major building work or a console move when possible, and keep a current cloud backup. If the game stops starting after Island Builder use, install the latest available update and use Nintendo’s support channels rather than repeatedly overwriting or deleting save data.
Because update availability can change, check Nintendo’s current update history if you are reading this after October 30, 2026. Ver. 1.0.4 is the latest version identified by the supplied 2026 documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why didn’t my island appear on the new console?
Most apparent transfer failures come from using the wrong user or account rather than from the game card. Work through this order:
- Wrong local user: Return to the user that originally created the island. Nintendo says islands are separate by user.
- Wrong Nintendo Account: Cloud downloads are documented for another console linked to the same Nintendo Account used for the backup.
- No cloud backup: Re-downloading the game does not recreate a save that was never backed up.
- Membership unavailable: Nintendo Switch Online is required for the Save Data Cloud route.
- Confusing demo and full versions: Demo carryover is a purchase-related progression path, not a general island migration tool.
- Expecting an Mii export: Mii-data restrictions do not mean the island save itself can be freely edited or exported.
Do not reset or dispose of the old console until the correct user and backup have been verified on the destination. This precaution follows Nintendo’s account-linked download model and protects the only remaining local copy if the cloud backup was not created.

What should I remember before selling or resetting the old Switch?
Write down the local user that owns the island, confirm its linked Nintendo Account, check Nintendo Switch Online status, and verify the Save Data Cloud backup. Then download the save on the replacement console and launch the game under the matching user before erasing the old system. Treat the game card, digital entitlement and save data as separate things: possessing the software alone is not proof that the island is available.
Finally, remember that restoring an island does not override Nintendo’s separate Mii-data rule. Characters created in the game should not be promised as transferable Miis for another Switch or another Nintendo title.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many Tomodachi Life islands can one Nintendo Account back up online?
Nintendo’s general Save Data Cloud documentation allows one save-data file per software title for each Nintendo Account. That means you should not plan on keeping several independently backed-up islands for this game under one account, even if different local users have separate islands.
Do I need the original game card to download my island backup?
The documented recovery requirement is the matching Nintendo Account and an available Save Data Cloud backup, not merely the physical card. You still need access to the game on the destination console, but the card itself does not identify which user-owned island to load.
Will restoring the save export my characters as system Miis?
No. Nintendo treats save recovery and Mii-data transfer as separate matters. Its FAQ says Mii data created in Living the Dream cannot be transferred to another Switch console or software such as Miitopia.
What should I do if Island Builder caused a later startup problem?
First bring the game to the latest version available for your console; Nintendo’s Ver. 1.0.4 notes identify a rare Island Builder save-corruption fix. Avoid deleting local data while troubleshooting, and contact Nintendo Support if the updated game still will not start.
