“This Story is No Longer Available” on Instagram usually means the Highlight’s Story has expired, been deleted, restricted, removed, or temporarily failed to load. Reopen the Highlight, test another Story, account, device, or network, and only then try app fixes. Clearing cache or reinstalling Instagram cannot restore permanently deleted content.
The error message is not a diagnosis by itself. A viewer may be unable to access one person’s Story because of privacy or Close Friends settings, while an account owner may be dealing with a deleted Archive item, a broken Highlight, an Instagram-side problem, or the historical July 2024 archive-loss incident.
Use the diagnostic checks below before deleting or rebuilding anything. The most important distinction is whether one slide is unavailable, whether an entire profile is affected, or whether Instagram Stories fail across your account.
Key takeaways
- “This Story is No Longer Available” on Instagram can indicate expired or deleted content, a Highlight edit, viewer-specific privacy restrictions, an app problem, or a service-side failure.
- When only one Highlight slide fails, the individual Story is more likely to be unavailable than the entire Instagram app.
- If another account can view the Highlight but your account cannot, Close Friends, blocking, privacy, or another viewer-specific restriction is more likely than a cache problem.
- Android users should use Clear cache, not Clear storage or Clear data, because those deeper reset options can remove local app data and sign the user out.
- Meta confirmed that a July 2024 technical issue permanently deleted some Instagram Story Highlights and Archives; reinstalling Instagram could not restore affected Stories.
What does “This Story is No Longer Available” mean on Instagram?
“This Story is No Longer Available” on Instagram means Instagram cannot currently deliver the particular Story to the viewer, but the message does not identify the exact reason. The Story may be gone, restricted, removed from a Highlight, or temporarily failing to load.

Common explanations include:
- The ordinary Story expired. Instagram Stories normally disappear after 24 hours unless the creator preserved them in a Highlight or Archive.
- The creator deleted the Story. A creator can remove a Story from a Highlight or delete it from the Archive.
- The creator edited the Highlight. The Highlight may have been rebuilt without the missing slide, or the creator may have changed it while you were opening it.
- The audience changed. The Story may be limited to Close Friends, the viewer may have been removed from that list, the account may have become private, or one account may have blocked or restricted the other.
- Instagram is having a loading problem. A stale feed, failed connection, expired login session, app bug, outdated app, corrupted Android cache, or temporary Instagram-side issue can prevent a valid Story from loading.
- The content was removed. Instagram may have removed the Story for policy, rights, or other platform reasons.
- The Story was affected by the July 2024 archive incident. Meta confirmed that a technical issue permanently deleted some users’ Story Highlights and Archives.
A visible Highlight circle or cover does not prove that every underlying slide still exists. Instagram can retain stale profile or Highlight metadata after the media behind an individual slide becomes unavailable.
Why does Instagram show different unavailable-Story messages?
Instagram may use a general “This story is no longer available” or “This story is unavailable” message when the current viewer cannot access the Story. A more specific notice can point to a known historical data-loss problem.
| Message or behavior | What it suggests | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| “This story is no longer available” or “This story is unavailable” | Instagram cannot deliver the Story to the current viewer. | It does not prove that the creator deleted it or blocked you. |
| “Due to a technical issue, this story is no longer available. While we’ve since fixed this issue, your story can’t be restored” | A strong indication of the historical Instagram archive-loss incident, especially in the owner’s Archive or Highlight. | It does not mean every current unavailable Story was affected by that incident. |
| Blank, black, or endlessly loading Highlight | A connection, app, session, cache, or Instagram-service loading problem is possible. | It does not prove that the Story still exists on Instagram. |
In July 2024, Meta confirmed that a technical issue caused some users’ Story Highlights and Story Archives to be deleted. Reporting on Meta’s statement said affected Stories could not be restored and that Instagram planned to remove the affected error display by July 2025. See the reported details of Meta’s July 2024 Instagram archive incident.

How can you diagnose an unavailable Instagram Highlight?
Diagnose the scope of the failure before changing the app. A comparison test tells you more than repeatedly tapping the same broken slide.
1. Are you viewing someone else’s Highlight or your own?
Viewers generally cannot repair another person’s Highlight. Viewers can retry the Story, test another account or device, and ask the creator to check the audience settings or repost the content.
Account owners can inspect the Story Archive, check Account Status, edit or rebuild the Highlight, re-upload a local copy, and report a suspected account-side problem.
2. Does one slide fail or does the whole Highlight fail?
| Observed result | More likely explanation | Best next check |
|---|---|---|
| Only one slide fails while other slides play | That Story was deleted, expired, restricted, removed, or damaged. | Open other Stories and ask the creator to check the original Story or Archive. |
| Every slide in one Highlight fails | A Highlight edit, profile-loading problem, access restriction, or app issue. | Refresh the profile and test another Highlight on the same account. |
| Several Highlights on one profile fail | An account-access, privacy, profile-loading, or service problem. | Test the profile from another account, device, or Instagram web interface where available. |
| Stories fail across Instagram | A connection, login session, app, outage, or broader platform problem. | Test another network and another account before reinstalling. |
3. Can another account or device view the same Story?
If a friend or second account can view the Highlight but your account cannot, viewer-specific access is more likely. Close Friends eligibility, blocking, privacy changes, and account restrictions can affect one viewer without affecting everyone.

4. Does the Story work on another network or Instagram’s web interface?
Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data, then try another reliable network. Where available, compare the Instagram app with Instagram’s web interface. If the Story works elsewhere, suspect the original app, device, connection, or login session. A successful network test does not prove that deleted media still exists.
How do you fix “This Story is No Longer Available” as a viewer?
Apply reversible checks first. Stop once the evidence shows that the creator deleted the Story, changed its audience, or Instagram permanently removed it.
1. Reopen and refresh the Highlight
- Back out of the Highlight.
- Return to the creator’s profile.
- Refresh the profile or feed.
- Open the Highlight again.
- Try the specific slide more than once.
A temporary loading failure may clear, while a stale Highlight entry may disappear after the profile refreshes. Refreshing cannot restore a Story that the creator deleted.

Open your own Story if one is available, another account’s Story, another Highlight on the same profile, and a different account’s Highlight. If unrelated Stories work normally and only one slide fails, repeatedly reinstalling Instagram is unlikely to help.
3. Force-close and reopen Instagram
Fully quit Instagram and launch it again. On an iPhone, open the app switcher and swipe Instagram away. On Android, dismiss Instagram from recent apps or use the device’s Force stop control in the Instagram app settings. Device labels can vary by manufacturer and operating-system version.
4. Update Instagram
Install the latest Instagram update offered by the device’s official app store. An update may correct a display, session, or loading bug, but an update cannot recover expired, deleted, restricted, policy-removed, or permanently lost Stories. General troubleshooting coverage also recommends updating for Story-availability errors; see the documented Instagram Story troubleshooting sequence.
5. Log out and back in
Logging in again can refresh an invalid account session, but it does not change another user’s privacy settings or restore deleted media. Before signing out, confirm that you know the password and can complete any two-factor authentication challenge.

- Open your Instagram profile.
- Open the menu.
- Look for Accounts Center or Settings and activity.
- Find the account or session sign-out control.
- Sign back in and test the Highlight.
6. Clear Instagram’s cache on Android
Android users can usually clear temporary Instagram files without clearing the app’s stored data:
- Open Android Settings.
- Open Apps or App management.
- Select Instagram.
- Open Storage or Storage & cache.
- Tap Clear cache.
Do not confuse Clear cache with Clear storage, Clear data, or an equivalent option. The deeper reset can remove local app data and sign you out. On iPhone, Instagram generally does not provide the same system-level cache button; offloading or deleting and reinstalling the app is a more disruptive reset.
7. Reinstall Instagram only as a last local reset
Reinstalling may correct a damaged local installation, but it cannot bring back a Story that expired, was deleted by the creator, was removed for policy or rights reasons, was restricted to another audience, or was permanently lost in the 2024 archive incident. Confirm your password and two-factor authentication access before uninstalling. Additional troubleshooting coverage describes reinstalling as a later step rather than a recovery method; see the cautions around Instagram app resets.
8. Ask the creator to check the Story
If the Highlight belongs to someone else, ask the creator whether the Story is still in the Archive, whether the Highlight was edited, and whether the Story was shared only with Close Friends. The creator may be able to re-add the Story or repost a local copy. A viewer cannot change the creator’s Close Friends list or rebuild the creator’s Highlight.
How can you repair your own broken Instagram Highlight?
An account owner should inspect the original Story before deleting the Highlight. The Archive determines whether the source media is still available to Instagram.
Check the Story Archive
Open Instagram’s profile and settings area, find the Archive section, and inspect the original Story by date. The exact route and labels can differ between app versions and account layouts.
| Archive result | Recommended action | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| The Story is still in Archive | Try adding the Story to the Highlight again, or remove and re-add the affected slide. | The Highlight may still need to be rebuilt if its collection is corrupted. |
| The Story is absent from Archive but a local copy exists | Post the local photo or video as a new Story and add it to a Highlight. | The new Story has a new timestamp and does not recover original interactions. |
| The Archive shows an unrecoverable technical-issue notice | Save any remaining local copy and consider reporting the problem. | The affected Story may be permanently lost from Instagram. |
| The Story is available but the Highlight is broken | Remove the dead slide or create a new Highlight from surviving archived Stories. | Rebuilding repairs the collection, not missing source media. |
Rebuild the Highlight
- Open the affected Highlight.
- Use the Highlight editing control.
- Remove unavailable slides.
- Add surviving archived Stories again if necessary.
- Save the changes.
- Reopen the profile and test the Highlight.
If editing fails, create a new Highlight from the surviving archived Stories and select a new cover. Rebuilding is a workaround for a broken collection; it is not a way to recover a Story that no longer exists in the Archive.
Re-upload a local copy as a new Story
Look for the original photo or video in Photos or Gallery, iCloud Photos, Google Photos, a computer backup, or a messaging or editing app. Post the local copy as a new Story, then add the new Story to an existing or new Highlight.

A reposted Story does not restore the original. The repost receives a new timestamp; original views, replies, polls, stickers, links, music, and effects do not automatically return. Music, location stickers, links, and effects may need to be recreated, and rights or regional availability may differ.
Should you check Account Status or report the problem?
Account owners should check Account Status when Instagram may have removed content or restricted the account, then report a suspected technical problem through Instagram’s in-app help controls.
- Open Instagram’s settings area.
- Look for Account Status and review restrictions or removed-content notices.
- Open Help and choose Report a problem, or use the equivalent control in the current app.
- Include the exact error text, username, Highlight name, approximate Story date, device model, operating-system version, Instagram app version, screenshots or a screen recording, and whether one Story or many are affected.
Do not expect a report to guarantee restoration. The July 2024 incident demonstrated that some server-side archive losses were permanent. Current support labels, response behavior, and appeal outcomes can vary, so do not rely on a promised restoration time.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan Instagram recover a Story that is permanently unavailable?
Instagram cannot be expected to recover a Story that expired, was permanently deleted, was removed from Instagram’s systems, or was affected by a confirmed unrecoverable archive failure. Local troubleshooting only addresses the copy of Instagram running on your device.
- Expired Story: An ordinary Story disappears after 24 hours unless it was preserved in a Highlight or Archive.
- Creator-deleted Story: The creator’s deletion cannot be reversed by a viewer.
- Removed Highlight slide: The creator may need to add the archived Story again or rebuild the Highlight.
- Audience-restricted Story: The creator must change the audience or repost it for an eligible audience.
- Policy or rights removal: The owner should review Account Status and any available review controls, without assuming that every removal can be reversed.
- 2024 archive incident: Meta’s confirmed incident permanently affected some Stories, and reinstalling the app could not recreate server-side media.
Be skeptical of third-party “Instagram recovery” tools. Instagram Stories are stored server-side rather than as a normally recoverable file in the app cache. A service asking for an Instagram password, session cookie, or payment while claiming to restore permanently deleted Stories presents an account-security risk and has no demonstrated ability to recreate Instagram’s missing server data.
Why can a friend see the Highlight when you cannot?
If a friend can see the Highlight while your account receives the unavailable message, the Story may be restricted to a different audience or your account may have viewer-specific access limitations.
Possible explanations include being blocked, being removed from Close Friends, a change from public to private account status, or another privacy change. The error alone cannot prove which explanation applies. The creator should verify the Story audience and whether your account remains eligible to view it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why does only one Highlight slide show the error?
One unavailable slide usually points to that individual Story rather than a complete Instagram app failure. The Story may have been deleted, removed from the Archive, omitted when the Highlight was rebuilt, restricted, damaged, or removed by Instagram.

How can you prevent important Instagram Stories from disappearing?
Use Instagram Archive and Highlights for convenience, not as the only copy of important media. The 2024 archive incident showed why creators should preserve originals outside one platform.
- Enable Story Archive in Instagram’s settings so ordinary Stories can be preserved when the feature is available to the account.
- Enable device or camera-roll saving where appropriate.
- Keep original photos and videos before adding Instagram music, stickers, effects, or other edits.
- Back up important media to a separate service such as Google Photos, iCloud Photos, or Dropbox.
- Periodically open important Highlights and confirm that their slides still play.
Cloud backup prevents future loss only when the original media was actually saved there. A backup service cannot retroactively restore a Story that was deleted by Instagram and never existed in the backup.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I recover a deleted Instagram Highlight?
A viewer cannot recover another person’s deleted Highlight, and an account owner cannot reliably recover a Story that was permanently deleted from Instagram. If the original Story remains in the owner’s Archive, the owner can add it to a Highlight again; otherwise, a local backup may allow a repost as a new Story.
Does clearing Instagram’s cache restore unavailable Stories?
Clearing Instagram’s cache may fix a local Android loading problem, but it cannot restore an expired, deleted, restricted, policy-removed, or permanently lost Story. Use Android’s Clear cache option and do not confuse it with Clear data or Clear storage.
Why can my friend see an Instagram Highlight but I cannot?
If another account can see the Highlight while your account cannot, viewer-specific access is more likely. Close Friends changes, blocking, privacy settings, or a private account can affect one viewer, although the unavailable message alone cannot identify the exact cause.
Can Instagram restore Stories lost in the 2024 technical issue?
Meta confirmed that a July 2024 technical issue permanently deleted some users’ Story Highlights and Archives, and affected Stories could not be restored. A local copy may let the owner repost the media, but reposting does not restore the original Story’s timestamp or interactions.
Does reinstalling Instagram delete my Stories?
Reinstalling Instagram does not itself recover Stories and should not be treated as a server-side recovery method. Before reinstalling, confirm your password and two-factor authentication access; reinstalling can remove local app data or create sign-in friction, while expired or deleted Stories remain unavailable.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Diagnose “This Story is No Longer Available” on Instagram before trying aggressive fixes. Test another Story, account, device, and network; use cache clearing or reinstalling only for suspected local app problems; and remember that no app reset can restore a Story permanently deleted or lost from Instagram’s servers.
