LCLDIY’s PlayStation 2 Duo is a completed enthusiast conversion that puts original PlayStation 2 hardware into a clamshell body. It has built-in controls, a flexible folding screen and a custom 3D-printed enclosure, so it can run genuine PS2 games rather than emulate them. The catch is portability: it folds for transport and protects the screen, but no published dimensions, weight or battery capacity establish it as a pocket-sized device. Reports describe the closed unit as a bulky “tiny brick,” making it better understood as a transportable console project than a handheld you can slip into a jeans pocket.

What is the PlayStation 2 Duo?

The Duo is a completed hardware-modification project by retro maker LCLDIY, not an official Sony product or a mass-market handheld. It retains original PS2 silicon and functionality while rearranging the console into a folding portable format.

The lower half contains the integrated controls and electronics. The upper half holds a flexible display. A custom shell surrounds the trimmed motherboard, wiring, cooling provisions, controls, screen and hinge assembly. LCLDIY published enclosure STL and control-PCB files, giving experienced builders material to study or adapt, but the project is not documented as a plug-and-play kit.

How was a real PS2 made foldable?

Turning a fixed home console into a clamshell requires major electrical, mechanical and thermal changes. The build combines board surgery, custom fabrication and careful hinge design rather than simply placing a console in a new case.

The motherboard was cut down

LCLDIY reduced the PS2 motherboard to remove unused board area and fit the remaining circuitry into the compact shell. Reports describe this work, along with the required soldering, as technically unforgiving: a mistake can permanently damage donor hardware.

The flexible screen dictated the hinge

The project description states that the flexible display needs 30 degrees of bend clearance. Folding it directly would risk breaking the panel, so the hinge and enclosure geometry leave a controlled arc instead of forcing the screen flat against itself. This is why the closed unit has visible bulk even though it folds.

Controls and wiring were custom-built

The controls are not an off-the-shelf PS2 controller transplanted into the case. LCLDIY designed a dedicated control circuit board and buttons shaped to fit the shell. Internal wiring also has to tolerate repeated hinge movement without being pinched or fatigued.

Power, cooling and access had to be reorganized

A home PS2 assumes mains power, a separate controller, external video and a fixed enclosure with room for cooling and memory-card access. A portable conversion must place those functions around battery power, an integrated display, built-in inputs, heat management and hinge-safe cable routing. The available reports do not publish the Duo’s battery capacity, runtime, exact cooling solution or memory-card layout.

Can the Duo run actual PlayStation 2 games?

Yes. Published footage and reports show the hardware running Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, God of War and Shinobi. Those demonstrations indicate a functioning original-console conversion, not a shell that only imitates the PS2’s appearance and not an emulator-based handheld.

The unit can also connect to a wireless controller for tabletop play. That option is useful when the integrated controls are less comfortable for long sessions, although the project’s primary design is self-contained play.

Is the PlayStation 2 Duo pocketable?

There is no published folded width, height, thickness, mass or battery specification, so pocketability cannot be established as a measured fact. The practical description is more limited: it folds, making it easier to carry and protecting the display and controls, but the closed assembly is bulky. TechEBlog characterized it as a sturdy “tiny brick,” which is an editorial description rather than a specification.

Its clamshell format should therefore be treated as a transport and protection feature, not proof that it fits in an ordinary pocket. A small backpack, shoulder bag or console case is a more realistic expectation until someone publishes verified measurements.

What does it take to build one?

This is an advanced electronics and fabrication project. A prospective builder should plan for donor hardware, board-level rework, custom mechanical parts and iterative troubleshooting.

Core parts

  • A used or parts PlayStation 2 console. LCLDIY reportedly bought three broken consoles for $20 total at a flea market in 2026, but the compatible console revision is not published.
  • A flexible display and a hinge arrangement that preserves the required 30-degree bend clearance.
  • A custom 3D-printed enclosure designed around the trimmed boards and moving screen.
  • A custom control PCB, buttons, switches and wiring.
  • Battery, power-management and cooling hardware selected for the specific PS2 board revision.
  • Optional wireless controller support for tabletop use.

Workshop requirements

  • Fine-tip soldering and electronics rework equipment for motherboard trimming and wiring.
  • A 3D printer or printing service capable of producing the enclosure parts.
  • Design software and patience for repeated fit checks around the screen, hinge and controls.
  • Safe methods for testing power, heat and hinge movement before extended gameplay.

The downloadable Hackaday.io archives are listed as 9.15 MB for the STL package and 116.01 kB for the PCB package. Those files can help an experienced maker reproduce the mechanical and control portions, but they do not turn the conversion into a beginner assembly project.

What are the biggest failure points?

  • Screen damage: removing the required bend clearance or misaligning the hinge can crack or permanently deform the flexible panel.
  • Motherboard loss: cutting traces or overheating pads during rework can destroy a donor board.
  • Hinge-wire fatigue: repeated opening and closing can pinch or break poorly routed conductors.
  • Heat and power problems: a compact enclosure leaves less room for airflow and battery protection than the original console.
  • Fit errors: even small dimensional mistakes can prevent the shell from closing or interfere with buttons, ports and service access.

Build in stages: verify the trimmed board outside the final shell, test the display and controls independently, then assemble the hinge and enclosure only after cable paths are proven safe.

Is this a product you can buy?

No standard retail version is documented. There is no published price, production run, warranty or normal replacement-parts channel. The Duo is best viewed as a one-off or small-community maker project whose value lies in preserving original PS2 behavior while solving a difficult mechanical problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a real PlayStation 2 be made portable without emulation?

Yes. The Duo demonstrates that original PS2 hardware can be trimmed, rewired and paired with an integrated display and controls. The trade-off is substantially higher electrical and mechanical complexity than using emulation hardware.

Where can I find the PS2 Duo enclosure and PCB files?

LCLDIY published STL enclosure and control-PCB archives with the project documentation on Hackaday.io. The listed archive sizes are 9.15 MB for the STL files and 116.01 kB for the PCB files.

How long does the PS2 Duo battery last?

No battery capacity or runtime figure has been published for the project, so there is no reliable play-time estimate. Any claimed runtime would depend on the specific battery, screen and PS2 board revision used.

Could a beginner build this foldable PS2 handheld?

It is not a beginner-friendly kit. Board cutting, fine soldering, custom 3D-print fitting and hinge-safe wiring all carry a significant risk of damaging parts, so prior electronics rework and fabrication experience is advisable.
