What does the ESRB Mature 17+ rating mean?
ESRB describes Teen as generally suitable for ages 13 and up and Mature as generally suitable for ages 17 and up. Its rating guide says, “Rating Categories suggest age appropriateness.” That wording matters: Mature 17+ is a consumer warning and age guideline, not a statistical finding that every younger player will be harmed or that every 17-year-old will enjoy the material.
The rating applies to both the original game and The Wolf Among Us Remastered. The two editions have separate ESRB entries, but each is Mature 17+ with the same seven listed descriptors:

Does it contain strong language?
Yes. Strong Language is an ESRB descriptor for explicit and/or frequent profanity. The original-game summary identifies three particularly strong words. Parents do not need to repeat those words to make a decision, but should expect severe sexual and other profanity in dialogue rather than occasional mild swearing.
Because the game is dialogue-driven, language can occur during investigations, arguments, threats, and emotionally intense scenes. A teen who can tolerate action violence but is not ready for frequent explicit profanity may find the language more objectionable than the visual style.
Is there nudity or sexual content?
There is mature sexual context and partial nudity, although the original ESRB summary says sex acts are not depicted. It identifies a topless pole dancer in a strip club and sexual moaning heard from a hotel room. That means the game is not merely flirtatious, even though it does not show an explicit sex act in the summary.
The Remastered summary also refers to women described as prostitutes and another character with exposed breasts. These details reinforce the Mature rating; improved graphics or the Remaster’s Noir Mode should not be treated as a safety filter.

How much context should parents give a younger teen?
Explain that the sexual material appears as part of an adult crime setting and can be encountered during story scenes. If a teen is uncomfortable with sexualized workplaces, prostitution references, exposed breasts, or implied sex sounds, the game is a poor fit regardless of whether the teen can follow the mystery.
Are smoking and drugs shown?
Smoking is a recurring part of the protagonist Bigby’s portrayal. The player may have a choice involving sharing cigarettes, but tobacco use remains part of the character and setting. The ESRB therefore lists Use of Tobacco.

What kind of story and choices does the game have?
Telltale presents the game as a mature, violent thriller in which decisions have consequences. You play through an episodic murder mystery, questioning characters and choosing responses that can alter later events.
