The Wolf Among Us Remastered is a visual and technical rebuild of the same five-episode 2013–14 murder mystery, not a remake. The plot, dialogue, choices, voice performances and comic-book art direction remain intact. The 2026 version moves the game to the later Telltale Tool used for the Batman games, replaces models and textures, relights every scene, improves animation and audio, and adds Noir Mode, five playable Lost Scenes, an art gallery and more than an hour of interviews. It is the better starting point for new players and a reasonably priced archival upgrade for digital owners who want those extras. Someone who already finished the story and only wants the same campaign can keep the original, especially because it remains available on some storefronts.

Is The Wolf Among Us Remastered a remake?
No. It is a remaster that preserves the original game’s five episodes, script, directorial decisions, relationships and choice structure. Telltale game director Matt Saia said the story, directing and overall art style were treated as “sacred.” The remaster therefore presents the same investigation rather than rewriting scenes or adding a new chapter.
The project is more substantial than an upscaled port. Telltale moved it to the latest version of its own toolset used for the Batman games, then rebuilt visual assets and lighting around that technology. It is still Telltale Tool rather than Unreal Engine. The result is a cleaner presentation with modern rendering, but some familiar Telltale quirks remain.
What remains exactly the same
- All five episodes: Faith, Smoke and Mirrors, A Crooked Mile, In Sheep’s Clothing and Cry Wolf.
- The murder investigation, dialogue branches, timed choices, investigation hotspots and quick-time-event fights.
- Bigby Wolf, Snow White, the Fables characters and the 1986 Fabletown setting.
- Voice performances, including Adam Harrington as Bigby and Erin Yvette as Snow White, and Jared Emerson-Johnson’s score.
- Relationship outcomes and the consequences of player choices.
What changed in the graphics?
The remaster replaces the original visual assets instead of simply increasing their resolution. Every character passed through concept work, a high-end model and a final in-game model; Telltale says the new models and textures are multiple times more detailed than those in the 2013 game.

Models, materials and animation
Faces, hair, clothing and muscle definition receive the most obvious attention. Outfits generally keep their familiar designs, so characters remain recognizable, while the underlying geometry is denser. New shaders add convincing glossy surfaces—such as shiny bottles—and moving objects can use inverted comic-style lines, including the ghost ship. The black outlines that define the game’s graphic-novel look remain in place.
Bigby’s werewolf form receives the boldest redesign. Telltale describes him as more feral and powerful while still recognizably the same character. Creature designs elsewhere are pushed toward a more monstrous appearance without abandoning the stylized art direction.
Lighting and environments
Relighting was effectively the central technical task. The original combines baked lighting, real-time lights and hand-painted details. Once environments and materials changed, that setup could not simply be reused, so every scene was relit. The remaster also refines environments, adds objects and vegetation, and updates animation and cinematic presentation.
Some formerly flat 2D backdrops are now 3D environments. Faith and Lawrence’s apartment, for example, was restaged as decaying former luxury: richer furniture and a more elegant chair are visibly worn down to reflect the couple’s collapsing relationship. These changes alter the visual information in a scene without changing what happens in it.
How large is the difference in practice?
Launch reviews describe the upgrade differently because the comparison depends on how recently someone played the original. GamingTrend called side-by-side differences “night and day,” particularly in textures, geometry and lighting. GameSpot found the changes more restrained in motion and said the original already had unusually durable art direction. Both observations can be true: close-ups and still comparisons show a rebuilt game, while a returning player may not feel that every moving shot is a total visual reboot.
Harsh daylight can expose lighting that looks less natural than the original, and some old color anomalies remain. HardZone specifically noted inconsistent coloration on Colin the pig. The remaster is cleaner, not a guarantee that every original rendering oddity has disappeared.
How does performance compare with the original?
The old console editions were known for lag, hitching and low frame rates that could make timed events uncomfortable. The remaster is substantially smoother on current PCs and consoles, but it does not eliminate every engine limitation. Camera cuts can still produce brief hitches, and textures occasionally load late.

Published PC observations
| Source and setup | Reported result | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| GamingTrend desktop | About 170 fps at the reviewer’s monitor refresh rate | Animations could still feel janky; a first-launch settings mouse-range bug blocked resolution changes |
| GamingTrend, Razer Blade 18 at 1440p | About 190 fps | Below a 240 Hz ceiling on that laptop |
| HardZone high-end desktop: Ryzen 7 9800X3D, 64 GB RAM, GeForce RTX 5080, 3440×1440 | 240 fps locked at high settings | Roughly 20–40% GPU and 20–25% CPU utilization; this is a powerful test system, not a universal target |
Those figures come from named launch reviews, not a site benchmark. They indicate that the game is not demanding for a modern gaming PC. They do not establish a universal frame-rate cap or a console resolution.
Known technical limitations
- Ultrawide: HardZone found that 3440×1440 fullscreen stretched the image. Windowed mode was the workaround; native ultrawide support was not present in the reviewed build.
- Stutter: Small hitches can occur on camera cuts even when the frame-rate counter remains high.
- Texture streaming: PlayStation LifeStyle still saw textures fail to load correctly at times.
- PC options: HardZone reported only High and Low graphics presets, rather than a detailed menu of individual settings.
- Animation: Movement and transitions retain the clunky feel associated with the Telltale Tool.
These are presentation limitations, not evidence that the remaster is slower than the original. They explain why a technically polished 2026 release can still feel unmistakably like a Telltale game.
PC requirements
Steam lists 8 GB of RAM for both tiers. The minimum targets 1080p at 30 fps on Low with Windows 10 64-bit, an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 or AMD Phenom II X4 910, and a GeForce GTX 470 1 GB or Radeon HD 5870 1 GB. The recommended specification targets 1080p at 60 fps on High with Windows 11, an Intel Core i3-8100 or AMD Ryzen 3 2300X, and a GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4 GB or Radeon RX 6400 4 GB.
No official per-console resolution or frame-rate targets were published for PS5 or Xbox. Claims such as 4K/60 should therefore not be treated as confirmed specifications.

The campaign is unchanged, but the package contains several additions outside the original episode structure.
Noir Mode
Noir Mode turns the entire game black and white and can be toggled at any time with one tap. Saia describes it as a pure film-noir treatment: unlike Batman’s Shadows Mode, it does not retain colored highlights. Shadows are slightly darker, which changes the mood of every location while leaving dialogue, choices and plot untouched.
The mode is an aesthetic option rather than a separate difficulty or story route. HardZone and GamingTrend warned that black-and-white contrast can make quick-time prompts and dialogue timers harder to read. The neon-colored default remains the clearest way to parse interface elements and the version that best showcases Fabletown’s original color design.

Five Lost Scenes
Five recovered deleted scenes are playable from a menu. They are not a sixth episode and do not expand the canonical campaign. One highlighted example is the Anderson Street Cleanup scene after the Woodsman fight; Saia said it is enjoyable but slows the pacing and weakens the more intimate Faith-and-Bigby moment that shipped in the original.
The scenes vary in finish. Reports mention missing dialogue or visual elements, sliding characters and lower-quality models. One is an alternate ending. Play them after completing the main story, because their placement and subject matter can spoil discoveries from the five episodes.
Gallery, interviews and archival material
An art gallery contains more than 100 images, combining archival work from the original production with remaster character and location art created over roughly the past two years. The package also includes more than an hour of developer and cast interviews and making-of videos. PlayStation LifeStyle counted five substantial videos covering the original art, characters and remaster process; GamingTrend liked the material but observed flickering in its playback interface.
Additional restored material, developer commentary and hints of hidden Easter eggs make the remaster useful as an archive of the game’s production history. They do not alter the playable narrative.
Interface, accessibility and languages
Telltale announced an updated interface and improved accessibility, but the consulted official materials did not itemize the individual options. Steam lists English voice acting with French, German and Latin American Spanish text. The Spanish localization is Latin American rather than Spain Spanish, and localized names such as “Lupo Ferro” for Bigby may sound unfamiliar to players who learned the English terminology.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDoes the remaster change the story or choices?
No. The remaster tells the same story of Bigby Wolf, the sheriff of a hidden Manhattan community of fairy-tale characters, investigating a murder that exposes a wider conspiracy. Fables who cannot maintain a human appearance with a glamour are sent to the Farm, and that social pressure remains central to the original plot.
The episodes originally launched separately over nine months: Faith on 11 October 2013 and Cry Wolf on 8 July 2014, with the three middle episodes released between them. The remaster ships all five episodes together, so a new player is not gated by an episodic release schedule.

Gameplay still consists of limited exploration, investigation hotspots, timed dialogue decisions and quick-time-event fights. There is no sixth episode. The Wolf Among Us 2, planned for 2027, is a separate game; the remaster does not include it. Telltale has said progress in the remaster will affect how the sequel plays, but it has not confirmed whether saves from 2013–14 versions will transfer.
Where can you play it, and when did it launch?
The remaster launched digitally on 29 October 2026. The launch platforms are PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and an Xbox One SKU playable on Xbox Series X|S. A Nintendo Switch version was delayed on 16 October 2026 and has no replacement date. Older previews that listed Switch for launch are out of date.

The answer depends on whether you value presentation and archival material more than another playthrough of a familiar story. The 50% digital-owner discount makes the decision easier, but it is still a second purchase of the same campaign.

Buy the remaster if you want
- New models, textures, relit scenes, upgraded animation and cleaned-up audio.
- A current PC, PS5 or Xbox version with substantially smoother performance than the old console editions.
- Noir Mode and the ability to switch between color and black-and-white during play.
- Five Lost Scenes, including an alternate ending, plus the gallery and interviews.
- A complete package that does not require episode-by-episode purchasing.
Keep the original if you
- Only want to replay the existing five episodes and do not care about extras.
- Prefer the exact 2013 visual balance and are sensitive to the remaster’s lighting or color oddities.
- Already have a working copy on a platform not supported at launch.
- Want a physical remaster immediately; the announced discs are not due until the first quarter of 2027.
New players have the simplest choice: the remaster is the current complete edition, and launch reviews from GameSpot, PlayStation LifeStyle, HardZone and other outlets generally direct newcomers to it. Existing owners should treat it as a presentation-and-archive upgrade rather than a story upgrade.

What was the original game’s reception?
The original is Telltale’s licensed prequel to Bill Willingham and Lan Medina’s Fables comics, which began in 2002. Contemporary Metacritic scores recorded in the available coverage were 83 on PS4, 83 on Xbox 360 and 80 on PC. It won a 2014 NAVGTR award for direction in a game cinema. Praise focused on writing, atmosphere and art direction; pacing and technical problems were recurring criticisms.
Launch-week remaster scores illustrate the same split between strong storytelling and imperfect technology: PlayStation LifeStyle gave the PS5 version 9/10, GamingTrend gave it 95/100, and HardZone gave it 8.4/10, including 10.0 for story and 7.5 for graphics and performance. These are individual outlet scores, not a verified aggregate.
How to choose between the two versions
- Check your platform. If you need Switch, wait for a date; if you need a physical remaster, wait for the planned 2027 edition.
- Check your ownership type. A digital copy on the same store and account can qualify for the owner discount; a disc does not.
- Decide whether extras matter. Noir Mode, Lost Scenes, the gallery and interviews are exclusive to the remaster.
- Decide whether visual fidelity matters. The remaster is rebuilt and relit, but the original art direction and story remain unchanged.
- Set expectations for performance. Expect much smoother play than old consoles, not a flawless modern engine: ultrawide support, detailed PC options and every hitch are still absent.
How the two versions differ, point by point
| Category | Original (2013–14) | Remastered (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Story and episodes | Five episodes released between October 2013 and July 2014 | Same five episodes in one package |
| Engine | Earlier Telltale Tool build | Later Telltale Tool build used for the Batman games |
| Characters and textures | Original models and textures | New models and textures, with more detailed faces, hair and clothing |
| Lighting | Original baked, real-time and hand-painted setup | Every scene relit after environment and material changes |
| Art direction | Comic-book outlines and neon-noir color design | Same core direction, with refined materials and environments |
| Modes and extras | No Noir Mode or Lost Scenes; original bonus content varies by release | Noir Mode, five Lost Scenes, 100-plus-image gallery and over an hour of interviews |
| Performance | Older-console lag, hitching and low frame rates were common criticisms | Higher frame rates and smoother play, with residual camera-cut stutter and texture pop-in |
| Ultrawide PC support | Not established in the available material | Not natively supported in the reviewed build; windowed mode was a workaround |
How we picked the recommendation
The comparison weighs four things: whether the underlying story is different, how extensive the visual rebuild is, what new content is included, and whether current-platform performance and pricing justify buying again. It also accounts for confirmed platform availability, the owner-discount rules and the technical limits reported at launch. On those criteria, the remaster is the default recommendation for newcomers, while the original remains sensible for owners who want only the unchanged campaign.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I transfer my original save into The Wolf Among Us Remastered?
The available launch information does not confirm save transfer from the 2013–14 releases. The remaster should be treated as a fresh playthrough unless your platform’s own migration tools provide a documented path.
Will my remaster choices carry into The Wolf Among Us 2?
Telltale has said remaster progress will affect how the planned 2027 sequel plays. It has not confirmed whether saves from the original game will be accepted, so do not buy the remaster solely to guarantee import of an old save.
Is Noir Mode a separate campaign or difficulty setting?
No. It is a visual filter for the complete story that can be switched on or off at any time. It changes the black-and-white presentation and shadow balance, not encounters, dialogue or choices.
Does the remaster include The Wolf Among Us 2?
No. The sequel is a separate title planned for 2027. The remaster contains the original five episodes and bonus material only.
