There is no single master chronology for The Witcher. Andrzej Sapkowski’s books, CD PROJEKT RED’s games and Netflix’s productions are connected by setting and characters, but they do not share one exact continuity. For a first reading, use The Last Wish, Sword of Destiny, then the five-novel saga from Blood of Elves through The Lady of the Lake. Play the games as their own trilogy, and watch Netflix’s prequels before seasons 1–4 if you want broad in-world order.
| Name | Best for | Key spec | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Books | First-time readers and the original literary story | Two short-story collections followed by five saga novels; standalone prequels sit outside the core route | Oct 2026 |
| Games | Interactive continuation in the Witcher universe | The Witcher → The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings → The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt; expansions follow game three | Oct 2026 |
| Netflix | Screen adaptations and television prequels | Blood Origin → Nightmare of the Wolf → main-series seasons 1–4 | Oct 2026 |
What is the best order to read The Witcher books?
The most dependable first-reading route is publication-friendly and story-friendly: read the two introductory collections, then the five novels that form the central saga. Do not begin with Blood of Elves merely because retailers call it “saga book one”; the earlier collections establish Geralt, Yennefer, Ciri and the political and folkloric rules the novels assume.
- The Last Wish — introductory Geralt stories, including the collection’s framing material.
- Sword of Destiny — the second short-story collection, with the relationships and choices that lead directly into the saga.
- Blood of Elves — the first novel in the five-book saga.
- The Time of Contempt — the saga’s second novel.
- Baptism of Fire — the third saga novel.
- The Tower of Swallows — the fourth saga novel.
- The Lady of the Lake — the fifth and concluding saga novel.
Hachette’s catalog separates the two introductory collections from the five-novel saga set. That division explains why a “seven-book core” is a better newcomer description than a retailer’s numbering system: the first two books are collections, while the final five are novels in one continuous saga.
Where do the two standalone novels fit?
Season of Storms is an earlier Geralt adventure set before Geralt becomes Ciri’s guardian. It is a standalone novel, not a continuation after The Lady of the Lake. You can read it after the seven-book route for maximum context, or choose it earlier when you want another self-contained monster-hunting story; the publisher description does not establish a precise gap between individual short stories.

Crossroads of Ravens is a young-Geralt prequel. Its publisher describes Geralt just after graduating from Kaer Morhen, and the US paperback page lists September 29, 2026 as its on-sale date. It belongs in broad early-event discussions, but it is not an additional volume placed between Blood of Elves and The Lady of the Lake. Hachette product pages may still show older preorder wording, so check the current edition and stock before buying.
What is the chronological order of the Witcher books by story events?
An events-oriented outline starts with Geralt’s youth and early contracts, then moves toward his bond with Ciri and the five-novel saga. Because the collections contain several stories and the publisher descriptions do not date every episode precisely, this is a broad orientation rather than a chapter-by-chapter calendar.
- Crossroads of Ravens — the earliest broad placement, following a newly graduated Geralt.
- Early material in The Last Wish — formative Geralt adventures and encounters that precede the main saga.
- Season of Storms — an earlier, standalone Geralt adventure before he is Ciri’s guardian; its exact position among the short stories is not fixed by the publisher’s description.
- Sword of Destiny — stories that bring Geralt and Ciri’s relationship to the threshold of the saga.
- Blood of Elves → The Time of Contempt → Baptism of Fire → The Tower of Swallows → The Lady of the Lake — the central five-novel sequence.
Newcomer callout: “Earliest events” and “best starting point” are different questions. Start with The Last Wish, follow the seven-book core route, and then pick Crossroads of Ravens or Season of Storms according to whether you want a young-Geralt prequel or another standalone adventure.
How should I play The Witcher games in order?
Play the original numbered Geralt games in release and narrative order. CD PROJEKT RED describes the games as being set in the universe created by Sapkowski, which is not the same as declaring every game event part of the books’ canon.

- The Witcher — the starting point for the game continuity.
- The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings — follows the first game’s political and personal consequences.
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — the trilogy’s largest chapter and the one that receives the two major story expansions.
Where do the game expansions belong?
- Hearts of Stone is an expansion to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
- Blood and Wine is another Witcher 3 expansion and is generally treated as the later expansion experience.
Both expansions require the third game; they are not numbered entries between games one and two. Their exact placement relative to every Wild Hunt quest depends on how you route through the open world, so use the game’s recommended level and quest flow rather than trying to map each mission to a novel chapter.
Is Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales game 1.5?
No. Thronebreaker is a separate story about Queen Meve during the Nilfgaardian conflict. It is optional parallel-world exploration, not a hidden fourth step in Geralt’s numbered route and not a bridge that must be played between the first and second games.
Should I put The Witcher 4 in the order?
Not as a released play-order step. CD PROJEKT RED listed The Witcher 4 as a separate game in development at the October 2026 research date. Its eventual position, protagonist and relationship to the original trilogy should be checked again when a current first-party release statement exists.

Why does season one seem out of order?
Season one interweaves the timelines of Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri. Episode order is therefore not an exact in-world date sequence. Watch the episodes in their released order; the convergence is designed to become clear as the season progresses, and an unofficial flashback shuffle can spoil how the stories connect.
What about The Rats: A Witcher Tale and Sirens of the Deep?
Netflix describes The Rats: A Witcher Tale as a separate six-outlaw heist story. Treat it as an ancillary title rather than assigning it a numbered season or an invented calendar year. A precise first-party chronological slot for Sirens of the Deep was not established in the available material, so it should not be forced into the list without a current Netflix placement.
Is season five available?
No released fifth season should be listed on the basis of the October 2026 catalog. Netflix has described season five as the planned final season, and showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich characterized the fourth and fifth seasons as a two-season journey toward the family’s reunion. Netflix had not supplied a verified season-five premiere date in the cited coverage.
How do the book, game and Netflix timelines relate?
They share a setting vocabulary—witchers, monsters, Nilfgaard, magic and many character names—but each route has its own continuity. Use the following distinctions when a guide appears to place one medium’s event directly inside another’s.

| Route | Continuity | What “chronological” means here | Core versus optional material |
|---|---|---|---|
| Books | Sapkowski’s literary continuity | Broad event order can differ from the most enjoyable first-reading order | Two collections plus five saga novels are core; Crossroads of Ravens and Season of Storms are standalone choices |
| Games | CD PROJEKT RED’s game continuity set in Sapkowski’s universe | Use the three numbered games in order, then attach expansions to game three | Thronebreaker is optional and parallel; The Witcher 4 was unreleased at the check date |
| Netflix | Netflix adaptation continuity | Use the broad prequel-to-main-series order, while respecting season one’s interwoven timelines | Blood Origin, Nightmare of the Wolf and seasons 1–4 form the main watch route; other titles are ancillary or not precisely placed |
Netflix has said its fourth and fifth seasons cover material from Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow and The Lady of the Lake. That is an official broad adaptation statement, not evidence that each season equals one book or that every scene follows the novel sequence one-for-one.

If you want the original story
Read the seven-book core route first. It introduces the world without requiring knowledge of either adaptation and preserves the relationships that later stories assume.
If you prefer games
Start with The Witcher, continue through Assassins of Kings, then play Wild Hunt and its expansions. You can read the books afterward for the source universe; the games do not require you to treat their endings as book canon.

If you want every available side story
Finish the seven-book route, then read Season of Storms and Crossroads of Ravens. For games, add Thronebreaker after you understand the main trilogy. For Netflix, treat The Rats and any film whose placement Netflix has not precisely stated as optional extras.
Which editions and boxed sets cover the reading route?
Hachette documents two useful physical groupings: The Witcher Stories Boxed Set: The Last Wish, Sword of Destiny for the introductory collections, and a separate five-novel saga boxed set with ISBN 9780316498845. Neither set contains all nine books discussed here. The paperback listings identify ISBN 9780316597746 for Crossroads of Ravens and ISBN 9780316453165 for Season of Storms; verify edition, seller, regional availability and current stock before purchase.
What chronology mistakes should I avoid?
- Starting at Blood of Elves and skipping both short-story collections.
- Calling Season of Storms a sequel simply because you read it after the saga.
- Inserting Crossroads of Ravens between saga novels rather than treating it as a young-Geralt prequel.
- Labeling Thronebreaker “game 1.5” or treating either Hearts of Stone or Blood and Wine as a numbered sequel.
- Reordering season-one episodes to manufacture a single timeline.
- Assigning a precise year to The Rats, a definitive slot to Sirens of the Deep, or a premiere date to season five without a current first-party statement.
- Assuming a Netflix season corresponds exactly to one novel because several book titles are named in the adaptation coverage.
The practical rule is simple: choose a medium first, follow that medium’s labeled route, and use cross-medium comparisons only as broad orientation. That preserves the distinctions between literary canon, game continuity and adaptation continuity while still showing how the three versions echo one another.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I read Season of Storms before The Last Wish?
You can, because it is a self-contained earlier Geralt adventure, but first-time readers usually get more context from the two introductory collections. The publisher description establishes that it predates Geralt’s guardianship of Ciri, not an exact position among every early story.
Do the Witcher games continue the books directly?
They use the universe created in Sapkowski’s books, but CD PROJEKT RED presents them as their own game continuity. Character histories and consequences can therefore differ without making either version an error inside its medium.
How long is Netflix’s Blood Origin?
Netflix’s catalog identifies it as a four-episode limited series. Its “more than a thousand years” description is a broad setting interval, not a precise calendar conversion shared by every Witcher continuity.
Should I watch the animated Vesemir film before season one?
It works either as a historical prequel or as an optional companion after you meet the main cast. Its focus is Vesemir’s earlier life, so it does not provide a missing episode needed to understand season one’s interwoven plot.
