The Witcher 3, Skyrim, and Elden Ring use art direction to make exploration feel different: The Witcher 3 emphasizes varied regions and local stories, Skyrim builds a strong sense of place from its concept-art influences, and Elden Ring balances painterly beauty with darkness. None is an objective winner; each creates a distinct visual invitation to explore.

How art style changes the experience of an open world

Art style is more than a game’s rendering technique or color palette. It shapes what a landscape seems to promise, how readily a player recognizes one region from another, and whether a landmark feels welcoming, ominous, or steeped in history. In an open-world RPG, those impressions guide exploration even before a quest explains what a place means.

The comparisons here focus on three games: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and Elden Ring. Their developers have described different visual goals, so the useful question is not which game looks best, but what each approach makes exploration feel like.

How does The Witcher 3’s art style compare to Skyrim?

The Witcher 3: regions with their own atmosphere

CD Projekt RED described The Witcher 3 as an open world without one singular theme. Its 2013 announcement emphasized diversified environments, distinct atmospheres and communities, and places that could respond to player decisions, major local plots, and side quests. That design intention makes regional variation part of the storytelling: moving through the world can feel like entering a different social and visual context, not simply crossing more terrain.

In that same announcement, CD Projekt RED head Adam Badowski called the environments “30 times larger than those in The Witcher 2.” That is the studio’s historical 2013 comparison, not a contemporary independent measurement of world size.

Environment Art Director Michał Janiszewski has described the care behind the world’s visual believability, including the use of regional references and detailed environmental choices. He recalled that the team was “moving the whole mountain to open the vista because they wanted to add something to the vibe.” The anecdote captures a key idea: a landscape can be adjusted not only to make a route possible, but to strengthen the mood of a view.

Skyrim: tone built from varied visual references

Bethesda’s account of Skyrim’s art development describes concept art as a way to establish tone and setting. Its references included artists’ own experiences of landscapes, fantasy literature, architecture, and iconography. Those influences give readers a useful way to understand the game’s visual identity: it is built from a collection of cues that help a place feel rooted in a particular fantasy setting.

The contrast with The Witcher 3 is not that one has environmental storytelling and the other does not. Rather, the developers’ descriptions emphasize different parts of the process. CD Projekt RED highlights region-specific atmosphere, communities, and story-linked changes; Bethesda emphasizes the references and concept-art work used to establish tone and setting.

Does Elden Ring feel different from The Witcher 3 because of its art style?

Yes, in part. Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki has described a painterly high-fantasy look intended to suggest a world that has passed through a Golden Age. In a PlayStation Blog interview, he said, “We wanted to give a sense that a Golden Age has passed through this world and that the player can still see traces of it.” He also described balancing more colorful moments against darker, intense situations.

That contrast gives the landscape a different emotional rhythm from the Witcher 3 approach described by its developers. The Witcher 3’s stated emphasis is on varied environments and distinct regional atmospheres; Elden Ring’s is on a painterly world where beauty and darkness sit alongside evidence of a lost height of civilization. These are design intentions, not guarantees of how every player will experience either game.

What to look for when comparing their worlds

Visual question What it can change for the player Developer context
Palette and lighting Whether a place feels inviting, somber, or threatening before the player knows its story. Miyazaki said Elden Ring balances colorful moments with darker, intense situations.
Regional identity How clearly one area feels distinct from the next, including the communities associated with it. CD Projekt RED described The Witcher 3 as having diverse environments with their own atmospheres and communities.
Environmental storytelling Whether landscapes, architecture, and small details suggest a place’s history or culture. CD Projekt RED discussed detailed regional references and landscape choices for The Witcher 3; Bethesda described the varied references informing Skyrim’s concept art.
Consistency and contrast Whether exploration holds to a dominant mood or shifts between visual and emotional registers. The Witcher 3’s announcement emphasized differentiated settings; Elden Ring’s director described balancing color and darkness.

How camera perspective affects the way a world reads

Art direction works alongside viewpoint. A camera changes how close the player feels to a character, how much of the horizon is visible, and how scale is communicated. CD Projekt RED level-design staff have contrasted The Witcher 3’s third-person, horizontal exploration with Cyberpunk 2077’s first-person, more vertical spaces. That is a useful design lens, but it does not establish that every third-person RPG or open world uses space in the same way.

When comparing these games, notice not only what a landscape looks like, but how the camera frames it: whether it foregrounds a character within the scenery, emphasizes distant landmarks, or draws attention to the route ahead. Those effects shape readability and intimacy without determining which viewpoint a player should prefer.

Which game’s art direction may suit your taste?

  • Choose The Witcher 3 if you are drawn to journeys through regions intended to have distinct atmospheres, communities, and local stories.
  • Choose Skyrim if you enjoy a fantasy setting whose tone is shaped by a broad mix of landscape, literary, architectural, and iconographic references.
  • Choose Elden Ring if you are interested in painterly high fantasy, traces of a vanished Golden Age, and a deliberate balance between color and darkness.

These are reading guides, not rankings. A player may value one game’s regional variety and another’s striking contrast, or respond differently to each game’s palette and camera.

Which version of The Witcher 3 are you looking at?

Current screenshots and older footage may show different editions. CD Projekt RED announced that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered became available on September 29, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. The studio says it includes visual, performance, gameplay, and other upgrades, and that it is free for existing owners. When comparing images or videos, identify the edition and platform where possible rather than treating every visual difference as evidence of a different art direction.

The studio also said the remaster grew out of work on the new expansion Songs of the Past, which it says is planned for 2027. That is a stated plan, not confirmation of a release date.
