Black, white, red and purple armor dyes are found by looting formula containers in Toussaint, not by relying on Beauclair’s regular dye merchant. You need the Blood and Wine content, then search the documented containers at Bastoy Prison Ruins, Mont Crane Castle, the Tufo Monster contract cellar and the cave camp east of Dun Tynne Crossroads. Those locations are useful search stops, but current guidance does not establish that a particular chest always produces one specific color in every edition or save. When you obtain a formula, craft it with one dye solution and four listed ingredients, then apply it from the equipment screen to an eligible Witcher gear piece.
What do I need before hunting rare dyes?
Armor dyes are a Blood and Wine feature. They recolor individual pieces of Witcher gear in Toussaint; they do not turn every armor set, weapon or ordinary clothing item into a dyeable item.
- Have Blood and Wine installed or enabled on your current game installation.
- Reach Toussaint and travel to the Beauclair port or beach area, where the dye merchant is located.
- Carry enough alchemical ingredients and at least one dye solution for each formula you plan to craft.
- Expect to search several containers. The color associated with an older guide’s chest is not a guaranteed result in every edition or save.
On September 29, 2026, CD PROJEKT RED said that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered includes both expansions, including Blood and Wine, for owners who previously had only the base game. Its support instructions tell owners to update and provide separate free-download steps for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Check your entitlement and available update before buying the expansion again.
A quick preparation checklist
Before setting out, open the alchemy menu and note which dye formulas you already know. This prevents a duplicate formula from being mistaken for a missing color. Leave room in your inventory for formula loot, and keep the ingredients listed for colors you intend to make rather than selling every low-level alchemy component. You do not need to decide on a single route: a contract, treasure hunt or ordinary exploration can put you near another candidate container.

It is also useful to keep a short record of what each chest actually produced in your save. Because the documented locations are not confirmed as fixed-color rewards across every edition, that note is more useful than a guide’s color label. If a location gives you gray instead of the expected white, record it, learn the formula if it is new, and continue the circuit.
Can I buy black or white dye from the Beauclair merchant?
Use the merchant for ordinary colors and dye remover, but do not count on the shop for black, white, red or purple. Historical stock lists include blue, brown, gray, green, orange, pink, turquoise and yellow; stock and prices can vary by edition or modification, so treat that list as a guide rather than a universal inventory.
Buy a remover from the same merchant if you want to restore a piece’s default appearance. Remover is purchased, not crafted. It returns the original look of the dyed Witcher gear piece; it does not create another dye or formula.
The merchant is therefore a convenient first stop, not a replacement for exploration. If you only need a listed ordinary color, buying it saves time and materials. If you are specifically asking, “Can I buy black or white dye?”, plan on finding the formula and crafting it instead. Do not infer that a color is unavailable merely because it is absent from one merchant’s current stock.
Where can I find the black dye formula?
Start at Bastoy Prison Ruins in western Toussaint. Older location guides point to a skeleton or treasure in the ruins as the black-formula spot. The safer interpretation is that Bastoy is a sensible black-formula search location, not a guaranteed black drop. If the container gives another formula, continue through the other documented containers instead of assuming the game is broken.
Black-dye search steps
- Travel to Bastoy Prison Ruins and explore the prison remains in western Toussaint.
- Search the skeleton and nearby treasure containers thoroughly; open every eligible container before leaving the area.
- Read the formula in your inventory if it appears. A formula is learned when you acquire it; finding a dye-colored item is not the same as finding the crafting formula.
- If black does not appear, keep the formula-search circuit moving through other marked and documented containers. The current evidence does not support repeatedly resetting Bastoy as a guaranteed solution.
Black dye recipe
Craft black after learning its formula with 1 dye solution, 1 Nigredo, 1 Stammelford’s Dust, 1 coal and 1 crow’s eye. The recipe uses five components in total, and the dye solution is required in addition to the four color-specific ingredients.
Do not substitute a different pigment recipe simply because it also begins with dye solution. Each color has its own four additional ingredients. If black is missing from the alchemy menu, first confirm that the black formula was actually learned; possessing Nigredo or coal alone does not unlock it.

Search the highest level of Mont Crane Castle. The documented target is a lockbox on a table beneath a wooden roof or awning. Older guides associate this lockbox with white, while newer guidance warns that formula colors are not fixed for every edition and save.
White-dye search steps
- Enter Mont Crane Castle and work upward until you reach the uppermost level.
- Look for the table under the wooden roof or awning and open the lockbox.
- Record whichever formula you actually receive. If it is not white, leave the area and inspect other documented formula containers rather than treating the result as a bug.
- Once white is learned, open the alchemy menu and confirm that the required ingredients are available.
White dye recipe
White requires 1 dye solution, 1 Albedo, 1 arenaria, 1 verbena and 1 mistletoe. These ingredients are different from the black recipe, so finding one formula does not make the other craftable.

Mont Crane is best treated as a navigation clue. The lockbox tells you where to look, not what your save must contain. If the result is another unlearned formula, it is still useful progress toward the full set of colors.
Where are the purple and red dye formulas?
Purple: The Tufo Monster contract
During The Tufo Monster contract, use the quest key to reach the basement or cellar and inspect the chest there. This is a documented candidate container for purple. The chest’s presence does not guarantee that every player receives purple, so check the formula text before leaving.
Purple’s recipe is 1 dye solution, 1 Hellebore petals, 1 pringrape, 1 wolfsbane and 1 grapes. The location is especially convenient if you are already pursuing the contract, because it combines quest progress with formula searching. If you arrive before the cellar is accessible, finish the relevant contract steps and return with the quest key rather than forcing the area early.
Red: the cave camp east of Dun Tynne Crossroads
Follow the road east from Dun Tynne Crossroads and search the cave camp’s box beside a bed. This is the documented search point for red, not an unconditional reward chest. If another formula appears, continue to other formula sites.
Red uses 1 dye solution, 1 Rubedo, 1 beggartick blossoms, 1 berbercane fruit and 1 cortinarius. The camp can be added to a road-trip route through eastern Toussaint; there is no need to abandon the search simply because the first box did not contain red.
Which other containers should I search?
Use these locations as a search circuit for formula containers, not as a list of twelve guaranteed color rewards. Older guides attach specific colors to some of them, while newer guidance treats the color assignment as uncertain across editions and saves.
- Arthach Palace: a bag behind a white tent is a documented container; older lists associate it with turquoise.
- A Knight’s Tales: inspect the dresser in the hut visited during the quest; older lists associate it with gray.
- Fort Ussar: search the documented container; older lists associate it with green.
- Northwest of Fox Hollow: inspect the skeleton near the den; older lists associate it with brown.
- Beauclair cemetery crypt: search the skeleton; older lists associate it with yellow.
Also check other marked chests, skeletons and enemies while exploring Toussaint. No reliable published drop percentage or controlled comparison establishes that one site is more likely than another for black, white, red or purple.
A practical search order
There is no mandatory order, but a sensible circuit minimizes wasted travel. Start with the Beauclair merchant to identify which ordinary colors are available and to buy remover if needed. Then visit Bastoy and Mont Crane as your black and white candidates. Fit the Tufo Monster cellar into your schedule when that contract is active, and stop at the Dun Tynne cave camp while traveling east. Finish with Arthach Palace, Fort Ussar, Fox Hollow and the Beauclair cemetery if you want more formulas.
This order is a convenience, not a probability ranking. It does not imply that Bastoy is more likely to produce black than Mont Crane is to produce white. The only dependable conclusion is that checking more documented containers gives you more opportunities to encounter an unlearned formula than stopping after one disappointing chest.

What are the crafting ingredients for every dye?
Each formula uses one dye solution plus four additional ingredients. Ingredient spellings can differ between historical guides and current item databases, so compare the names shown in your own alchemy menu before selling or dismantling materials.

A 2026 description by the author of the Dyes For All mod enumerates 12 armor-dye colors. That is a mod-author count, not a publisher statistic about loot behavior.
How to avoid ingredient mistakes
Read the complete recipe in the alchemy interface instead of relying on a remembered color name. Several recipes use similarly named materials, and historical spelling differences can make a familiar ingredient appear unfamiliar. The table is a planning reference; your installed game’s displayed recipe is the final check. Craft only after confirming that the formula is learned and that one dye solution is available.
How do I apply a dye and remove it later?
After crafting a dye, open the equipment interface and select an eligible Witcher armor piece. Choose the dye option and confirm the color; the piece’s appearance changes while its armor statistics remain tied to the underlying gear. If the dye option is unavailable, the item is not an eligible Witcher gear piece or you are selecting a non-armor slot.
- Open the inventory or equipment screen.
- Select the Witcher armor piece you want to recolor.
- Choose the dye command shown by the interface.
- Select the crafted color and confirm.
- To undo it, buy dye remover from the Toussaint merchant and use it on the dyed piece.
Dye remover restores the default appearance. It is not an ingredient substitute and does not unlock a missing formula. If you are comparing several Witcher sets, apply the dye to the individual piece you actually want to display; owning a formula does not recolor every eligible item automatically.

A missing black formula at Bastoy does not prove that your save is corrupted. The Bastoy and Mont Crane directions come from older fixed-location guides, while newer guidance identifies formula containers without establishing a fixed color result for every edition and save.
- Confirm the expansion: verify that Blood and Wine content is installed or enabled after the current game update.
- Check the item text: you may have looted a different dye formula, not a black dye itself.
- Search the whole container: inspect nearby skeletons, boxes and chests instead of stopping at the first marked object.
- Continue the circuit: visit Mont Crane, the Tufo Monster cellar, the Dun Tynne cave camp and the other documented sites.
- Do not rely on a reset promise: no source establishes a repeatable percentage or a guaranteed color after reloading.
If the alchemy menu still lacks a formula after you have searched several sites, verify that the item was not already learned and that you are viewing the dye category rather than general alchemy ingredients. Also check whether a mod changes merchant stock or loot behavior before treating a difference from an older guide as a game error.
Which way of obtaining a rare dye is best?
The right approach depends on whether you value a quick purchase, certainty about the color, or avoiding an exploration detour. Because rare-color drops are not guaranteed by the documented containers, no route can promise a specific result on every save.

Buying ordinary colors while exploring leaves your time and ingredients for the colors that require formula hunting.

Does the game edition change access to armor dyes?
The important distinction is whether your edition includes Blood and Wine, not whether a particular edition guarantees a color at Bastoy or Mont Crane. CD PROJEKT RED’s September 29, 2026 announcement says the Remastered release includes Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine; existing base-game owners were directed to update and follow the platform-specific entitlement instructions.
The physical Nintendo Switch Complete Edition was described by CD PROJEKT RED as including 16 free DLCs and the expansions on the game card. That 16-DLC figure describes edition content, not the number of dye drops or a guarantee about any formula container. Prospective buyers should confirm the current platform listing, while existing owners should check for the free update entitlement first.
Physical and digital ownership should therefore be compared by expansion access, platform instructions and update status. There is no supported basis for claiming that a physical copy, a particular console edition or a remastered build guarantees a named color from a named chest. If you already own the base game, verify the free entitlement before purchasing another copy.

Guides published in the 2016–2023 period often present Bastoy as black and Mont Crane as white. A guide updated October 22, 2026 treats those places as formula containers but warns that the color is not guaranteed. The material does not establish the loot algorithm separately for every edition and save, so the useful navigation directions and the uncertainty must be kept together.

That is why this guide names a chest, skeleton or lockbox as a search stop rather than promising a fixed reward. It also explains the recovery path: inspect additional containers and use the full ingredient table once the formula you actually found is known.
