The Nokia 1100 is generally considered the best-selling mobile phone of all time, with more than 250 million units commonly reported. The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus form the best-selling smartphone family at about 222.4 million. This worldwide ranking uses estimated lifetime units and groups closely related variants where appropriate.

Key takeaways

  • The Nokia 1100 leads the estimated all-time ranking at more than 250 million units, although the exact total is not fully audited.
  • The Nokia 1110 is close behind at approximately 248–250 million units, making the top two positions difficult to separate reliably.
  • The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are the best-selling smartphone family, with an estimated 222.4 million combined units.
  • Feature phones dominate the overall list because low prices, long battery life, prepaid distribution, and expanding mobile networks created enormous global demand.
  • Apple and Nokia account for 14 of the 15 entries in this estimate-based ranking; Samsung appears with the low-cost E1100.

How was the top 15 best-selling mobile phones ranking assembled?

The top 15 best-selling mobile phones of all time cannot be established from one universally audited manufacturer database. The ranking below combines publicly reported manufacturer milestones, analyst estimates, industry reporting, and the compiled historical data in the historical best-selling mobile-phone ranking.

The figures should therefore be read as estimated lifetime sales, not precise retail sell-through totals. A manufacturer may count units shipped to distributors or carriers, while another source may estimate units purchased by end customers. Those measurements are related but not identical.

Methodology at a glance

  • Geography: Worldwide sales or shipment estimates.
  • Measure: Estimated lifetime units, rather than annual sales or revenue.
  • Grouping: Closely related variants are grouped when sources report them together or when they represent one commercial generation.
  • Separate models: Distinct model names with separate sales histories remain separate, such as the Nokia 1100 and Nokia 1110.
  • Precision: Rounded figures and ranges are used where the public evidence does not justify a more exact number.
  • Comparability: Some totals may represent shipments, sell-in, or estimated sales rather than audited end-customer purchases.

The top 15 best-selling mobile phones of all time

The following table follows the convention used by major compiled lists: closely related variants are grouped when they represent one commercial generation. That rule makes an iPhone family comparable with a Nokia series, but it also means a strict one-model ranking could produce a different order.

Rank Phone or family Manufacturer Launch year Estimated lifetime units Type Qualification
1 Nokia 1100 Nokia 2003 250 million+ Feature phone Commonly reported estimate; exact total is uncertain.
2 Nokia 1110 Nokia 2005 About 248–250 million Feature phone Sources vary between approximately 248 million and rounded figures near 250 million.
3 iPhone 6 and 6 Plus Apple 2014 About 222.4 million Smartphone 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch variants grouped.
4 Nokia 105 series Nokia 2013 About 200 million Feature phone Multiple generations and regional versions share the Nokia 105 name.
5 iPhone 6S and 6S Plus Apple 2015 About 173.8–174.5 million Smartphone Two screen-size variants grouped.
6 iPhone 5S Apple 2013 About 163.7–165 million Smartphone Compiled estimate is about 163.7 million; other lists round higher.
7 Nokia 3210 Nokia 1999 About 160–161 million Feature phone Do not confuse this figure with the lower estimate for the Nokia 3310.
8 iPhone 7 and 7 Plus Apple 2016 About 156.7–160 million Smartphone Two variants grouped; estimates differ by source.
9 iPhone 11 family Apple 2019 About 156–159 million Smartphone iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max grouped.
10 iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max Apple 2018 About 150.7–151 million Smartphone Three related models grouped.
11 Nokia 6600 Nokia 2003 About 150 million Feature phone Historical estimate with less transparent documentation than the top entries.
12 Nokia 1200 Nokia 2007 About 150 million Feature phone Estimated rather than a clearly audited model-level total.
13 Nokia 5230 Nokia 2009 About 150 million Feature phone Some sources discuss closely related variants, including the 5233, alongside it.
14 Samsung E1100 Samsung 2009 About 150 million Feature phone Low-cost mass-market handset; estimate is rounded.
15 iPhone 5 Apple 2012 About 143.4–146 million Smartphone Compiled estimate is about 143.4 million; other lists round to roughly 146 million.

Because several entries are clustered around 150 million, the difference between ranks 10 and 14 should not be treated as a precise measurement. A rounded estimate of 150 million does not establish whether the underlying total was 149 million, 150 million, or 152 million.

Why is the Nokia 1100 the best-selling mobile phone?

The Nokia 1100 is generally regarded as the overall leader because it combined an affordable basic design with the features that mattered most to first-time and replacement-phone buyers. The model launched in 2003 and is commonly reported at more than 250 million units, although the total should be described as an estimate rather than an exact audited number.

The Nokia 1100 was not designed as a prestige device. Its appeal came from practical scalability: compact size, long battery endurance, simple messaging, a built-in flashlight, straightforward controls, and broad availability. A low purchase price also made the phone suitable for prepaid customers and markets where smartphones were either unavailable or far too expensive.

Nokia’s distribution and operator relationships amplified those design choices. During the rapid expansion of mobile networks, a basic handset could serve a new subscriber, a family member, a replacement buyer, or a customer who needed a second phone. Practical durability became part of the Nokia 1100’s reputation, but “indestructible” is a cultural description, not a literal technical specification.

Why is the Nokia 1110 ranked separately from the Nokia 1100?

The Nokia 1110 is a separate entry because it was a distinct handset model launched in 2005, even though the Nokia 1110 and Nokia 1100 occupied similar low-cost markets. Public estimates commonly place the Nokia 1110 at approximately 248–250 million units.

The apparent difference between 248 million and 250 million is not meaningful enough to support a confident claim that one model definitively outsold the other by two million. Some historical references round both models to roughly 250 million, while other compilations use different estimates. The safest conclusion is that the Nokia 1100 and Nokia 1110 were exceptionally close, with the Nokia 1100 usually placed first.

Why did feature phones sell so many units?

Feature phones dominated historical volume because they met a much larger set of affordability and infrastructure requirements than early smartphones. Their success came from several reinforcing conditions:

  • Lower prices: A basic handset was accessible to buyers who could not justify or afford a smartphone.
  • Long battery life: Simple hardware could operate for much longer between charges, which mattered where electricity access was inconsistent.
  • Practical durability: Basic phones generally had fewer expensive components and were easier to maintain or replace.
  • Prepaid and carrier sales: Mobile operators could bundle inexpensive phones with new connections and prepaid plans.
  • Network expansion: As mobile coverage reached new regions, many customers were buying their first mobile phone.
  • Simple software: Calling, texting, contacts, alarms, and basic tools were enough for a large audience.
  • Broad distribution: Nokia in particular had extensive retail and operator relationships across many countries.

The sales environment was therefore different from the modern smartphone market. A phone did not need an advanced camera, app ecosystem, or large display to become a mass-market product. It needed to be inexpensive, available, dependable, and easy to use.

Why do iPhone generations occupy so many positions?

Apple’s iPhone generations appear repeatedly because Apple sold multiple models within a commercial generation and often kept older iPhones available at lower prices. Carrier financing, global distribution, resale markets, and continued software support helped premium iPhones reach much larger unit volumes than their launch prices might suggest.

The iPhone 6 generation was especially important. The iPhone 6 used a 4.7-inch display and the iPhone 6 Plus used a 5.5-inch display, expanding Apple’s earlier smaller-screen strategy. The commonly compiled total of about 222.4 million applies to the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus together; it does not mean the iPhone 6 handset alone sold 222.4 million units.

The same grouping issue applies to the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, estimated at approximately 173.8–174.5 million combined, and to later entries such as the iPhone 7/7 Plus, iPhone 11 family, and iPhone XR/XS/XS Max.

Apple’s regular reporting also limits precision. Apple’s corporate results reporting provides financial and broader product-category context, but it does not supply a complete, current model-by-model lifetime unit leaderboard. Later iPhones may therefore be undercounted or difficult to compare directly with older models that received widely repeated milestone estimates.

What are the best-selling smartphones?

If feature phones are excluded, the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are generally treated as the leading smartphone family, with approximately 222.4 million combined units. The strongest smartphone entries in the overall ranking are shown below.

Smartphone family Estimated lifetime units How the total is counted
iPhone 6 and 6 Plus About 222.4 million Two screen-size variants grouped.
iPhone 6S and 6S Plus About 173.8–174.5 million Two variants grouped.
iPhone 5S About 163.7–165 million Single named model.
iPhone 7 and 7 Plus About 156.7–160 million Two variants grouped.
iPhone 11 family About 156–159 million iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max grouped.
iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max About 150.7–151 million Three related models grouped.
iPhone 5 About 143.4–146 million Single named model.

The best-selling Android model is less certain. The Samsung Galaxy S4 is often cited as the leading Android phone, but published estimates vary from about 70 million in the compiled ranking to roughly 80 million in some historical reporting. The Samsung Galaxy S4 historical record is useful context, but the available figures do not justify calling it definitively the best-selling Android model under every methodology.

What happened with ranks six through ten?

The middle of the ranking shows how Apple’s product strategy turned individual smartphone launches into high-volume commercial generations.

6. iPhone 5S — approximately 163.7–165 million

The iPhone 5S remained commercially important because it offered Apple’s then-current flagship experience while also benefiting from continued availability after newer models arrived. The compiled estimate is about 163.7 million, while other published rankings round the figure to approximately 165 million.

7. Nokia 3210 — approximately 160–161 million

The Nokia 3210 launched in 1999 and reached an estimated 160–161 million units. The model should not be confused with the culturally iconic Nokia 3310. The Nokia 3310 is generally listed at approximately 126 million, which places it below the Nokia 3210 in the compiled ranking.

8. iPhone 7 and 7 Plus — approximately 156.7–160 million

The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are counted together, and estimates vary between approximately 156.7 million and 160 million. The grouped total reflects the commercial generation rather than one physical handset model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. iPhone 11 family — approximately 156–159 million

The iPhone 11 family combines the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max. One compiled breakdown attributes about 102 million units to the iPhone 11 and about 47.5 million to the Pro models, producing a family total in the mid- to high-150-million range.

10. iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max — approximately 150.7–151 million

The approximately 151-million estimate covers the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max together. The iPhone XR alone is separately estimated at about 77.4 million, while one cited breakdown places the XS and XS Max together at about 48 million. Treating 151 million as the iPhone XR-only total would therefore be misleading.

What do ranks eleven through fifteen reveal about the market?

The final five positions show that mass-market feature phones could approach the sales scale of major smartphone generations when they were inexpensive and distributed globally.

11. Nokia 6600 — approximately 150 million

The Nokia 6600 is often included in historical Nokia bestseller lists at approximately 150 million units. Its exact lifetime total is less transparently documented than the leading Nokia models, so the figure should remain an estimate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

12. Nokia 1200 — approximately 150 million

The Nokia 1200 was another high-volume basic handset, commonly placed near 150 million units. The public figure is best treated as a rounded estimate rather than a manufacturer-audited model total.

13. Nokia 5230 — approximately 150 million

The Nokia 5230 is commonly listed at about 150 million units. Some historical sources discuss related variants, including the Nokia 5233, alongside the 5230, so the precise scope depends on the source’s inclusion rule.

14. Samsung E1100 — approximately 150 million

The Samsung E1100 is the notable break in the Nokia-and-Apple pattern. The low-cost handset targeted mass-market users and is commonly estimated at approximately 150 million units. Samsung sold many millions of Galaxy smartphones, but its largest individual models generally did not match the lifetime estimates of Nokia’s biggest basic phones or Apple’s strongest iPhone generations.

15. iPhone 5 — approximately 143.4–146 million

The iPhone 5 closes the list with an estimated 143.4–146 million units. The compiled figure is about 143.4 million, while other rankings round the total toward 146 million. The range is more honest than presenting either value as an audited exact total.

Why is the Nokia 105 listed as a series?

The Nokia 105 is listed as a series because the name has been reused across multiple generations and regional versions. The commonly cited total of about 200 million should not be attributed without qualification to only the first Nokia 105 handset released in 2013.

This distinction matters because a series total can combine several hardware revisions sold over a long period. The Nokia 105 entry is therefore methodologically closer to a grouped iPhone generation than to a single, unchanged piece of hardware.

Why is the Nokia 3310 not number one?

The Nokia 3310 is culturally iconic but is generally estimated at approximately 126 million units, below the Nokia 3210, Nokia 6600, Nokia 1200, and Nokia 5230 in the compiled ranking. Cultural visibility and sales volume measure different things.

The Nokia 3310 became famous for its robust reputation, compact design, games, and wide ownership. That reputation does not make it the highest-volume Nokia handset. The compiled historical list places several less celebrated Nokia models above it.

Why are famous phones such as the original iPhone and Motorola Razr V3 missing?

The ranking measures estimated lifetime units, not historical importance. The original iPhone, Motorola Razr V3, BlackBerry models, and Samsung Galaxy S II were highly influential or commercially significant, but fame, innovation, profitability, and cultural impact do not automatically produce a top-15 lifetime unit total.

The Motorola Razr V3 is an especially important example: its design shaped the fashion-phone era, yet the most widely circulated all-time volume rankings do not place it in this top 15. A separate ranking of the most influential mobile phones would produce a very different result.

Why is Samsung mostly absent from the ranking?

Samsung’s limited representation in this particular top 15 reflects the difference between a company’s total sales and the lifetime sales of one model. Samsung has sold many successful phone families, but its largest individual model estimates generally fall below the exceptionally high totals associated with Nokia’s mass-market feature phones and Apple’s strongest grouped iPhone generations.

The Samsung E1100 is the exception because it was an inexpensive global feature phone built for high-volume markets. The Galaxy S4 is often cited as Samsung’s strongest individual smartphone comparison point, with estimates ranging from about 70 million to 80 million, but those figures remain source-dependent and well below the top entries in this list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What are the main limitations of the ranking?

The ranking is useful as a historical comparison, but it should not be mistaken for a definitive audited leaderboard.

  • Shipment versus sell-through: Units shipped to carriers or distributors may not equal units purchased by end users.
  • Family grouping: Combining an iPhone with its Plus or Pro variants changes the order compared with a strict individual-model ranking.
  • Series reuse: Names such as Nokia 105 can cover multiple generations and regional versions.
  • Rounded figures: A reported 150 million may hide a substantial uncertainty range.
  • Incomplete disclosure: Manufacturers have not consistently published model-level lifetime totals, and Apple no longer provides a complete current model-by-model unit series in its regular reporting.
  • Newer models: Recent smartphones may have sold very large numbers but lack comparable lifetime estimates or sufficient time in the market.
  • Changing market definitions: A worldwide mobile-phone ranking includes feature phones; a smartphone-only ranking produces a materially different list.

For those reasons, wording such as “commonly estimated at,” “widely reported to have sold,” and “the compiled historical ranking lists” is more accurate than presenting every number as an official exact total.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best-selling mobile phone ever?

The Nokia 1100 is generally considered the best-selling mobile phone ever, with more than 250 million units commonly reported. The Nokia 1110 is extremely close, with estimates of approximately 248–250 million units, so the small difference is not reliably measurable.

What is the best-selling smartphone ever?

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are generally considered the best-selling smartphone family, with about 222.4 million combined units. The figure applies to both screen-size variants together, not to the iPhone 6 alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Did the Nokia 3310 sell more than the iPhone?

The Nokia 3310 is commonly estimated at approximately 126 million units, so it sold fewer units than several major iPhone families, including the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. The Nokia 3310’s cultural fame should not be confused with the highest lifetime sales volume.

Which Samsung phone sold the most?

The Samsung E1100 is the Samsung model included in this top-15 estimate, at approximately 150 million units. The Galaxy S4 is often cited as Samsung’s leading Android smartphone, but published estimates vary from about 70 million to 80 million and do not settle every comparison.

Are these mobile-phone figures sales or shipments?

The figures are mixed historical estimates: some may reflect manufacturer shipments or sell-in to carriers and distributors, while others estimate end-customer sales. Because the underlying measurements are not fully comparable, the ranking uses approximate ranges and qualifications instead of claiming a precise audited total.

The Bottom Line

The historical volume leader is the Nokia 1100, while the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus lead the smartphone category. The larger lesson is that Nokia won the global mass-market feature-phone era through affordability and distribution, whereas Apple produced the highest-volume smartphone generations. Every position should be treated as an informed estimate because model-level lifetime sales were not reported consistently.
