Early reactions to Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Reckoning are mixed, not unanimous: some responses praise its urgency and performances, while one critic quoted in an October 6 roundup found it informative but not necessarily compelling. “Brutally important” is that critic’s judgment—not a consensus score.

What do the early reviews say?

India Today’s October 6, 2026 roundup reports enthusiastic reactions from Scott Menzel and Jeff Conway, alongside a more qualified response from Daniel Howat. The reactions point to three useful areas of comparison:

  • Timeliness and importance: Conway called the film “A thoughtful, uncomfortable yet brutally important true story” about digital communication, social media, misinformation, and free speech.
  • Performances: Howat praised the performances, as well as Sorkin’s rhythmic script.
  • Dramatic engagement: Howat found the film informative, but not necessarily compelling.

These are individual responses reported by India Today, not a complete sample of reviews or a verified aggregate rating. The available reactions suggest that the film’s subject and performances are points of praise, while its ability to engage as drama is a reservation in at least one response.

What does “brutally important” mean here?

It is Conway’s description of the film, not an objective measure of its quality or evidence that critics broadly agree. The phrase captures his view of the story’s relevance to social media and public debate; Howat’s more qualified reaction shows that a viewer can find the subject informative without finding the film fully compelling.

What is The Social Reckoning about?

Sony describes The Social Reckoning as Aaron Sorkin’s original screenplay and a companion piece to The Social Network. Its synopsis follows Facebook engineer Frances Haugen, played by Mikey Madison, who enlists Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz, played by Jeremy Allen White, in a journey exposing secrets at the social network. The Associated Press describes the film as Sorkin’s return to Facebook’s story and reports that Jeremy Strong plays Mark Zuckerberg.

Sorkin, who wrote and directed the film, told the AP: “When you see this movie, No. 1, I want you to be entertained. No. 2, you should be alarmed when you see the movie. I think people will be.” That is his stated aim, rather than a claim that every viewer or critic will respond that way.

When does The Social Reckoning come out?

Sony lists October 9, 2026, for the US theatrical release. The Associated Press also reports that date. India Today reports an October 9 nationwide release in India, so the territory-specific listings should not be treated as interchangeable global release information.

How much can these first reactions tell you?

The early responses offer a first indication of how some viewers are responding to the film’s subject, performances, and dramatic approach. They do not establish a broad critical consensus: the roundup reports individual opinions, with no standardized score or review-count aggregate supplied. Until a wider set of reviews is available, the most accurate reading is that reactions include both strong praise for the film’s importance and reservations about its dramatic pull.
