The Regreening is a single-player soilpunk restoration simulation rather than a conventional profit-focused farm game. As Viri, you clean a deserted world, grow plants, craft and place animal habitats, complete quests, and befriend Baltic-inspired nature spirits. The reward is a healthier ecosystem and returning wildlife you can hug, not a cash crop loop. The full game is scheduled for 7 December 2026 on Windows PC through Steam. A free demo has been available since 1 October 2026, including several restoration areas, crows, a quest journal, and 100% map restoration.
What is The Regreening?
The Regreening is a cozy simulation built around ecological recovery. Viri, a descendant of the Earthbound humans who remained on the planet, travels through abandoned regions, removes junk, improves soil and water conditions, grows biodiverse plants, and restores habitats so wildlife can return.
Its “soilpunk” setting combines post-apocalyptic ruins with hopeful environmental repair. The game draws inspiration from real restoration projects: trees are planted to improve soil, provide shelter, retain water, and expand a biome, not harvested and sold for profit. Flowers and berries can be replanted in new areas or given as gifts to animals and friends.

There are no timers or pressure systems in the published design. Progress comes from restoration percentages, quests and storylines, new recipes, tools, map rewards, and relationships with characters and spirits. The game is single-player.

How do habitats work in The Regreening?
Habitats are crafted structures that you place manually on the map. Wildlife does not simply appear after planting a few crops: each habitat occupies tiles and checks a web of environmental conditions before its species can thrive.
Environmental stats and tile footprints
The placement interface shows environmental connections and stats for a proposed habitat. Soil quality, available water, plant cover and the footprint of nearby habitats all matter. A habitat can be technically placeable yet still need more supporting plants, moisture or improved ground before the animal can establish itself.
This makes habitat planning closer to a small city-builder than to a standard crop plot. You are arranging interdependent living spaces, not maximizing a field for sale value.

Rabbit and fox habitats
Rabbit and fox habitats can overlap. The overlap is intentional, but their footprints and environmental requirements must be balanced so both species can take root. The placement view’s stat web is the practical tool for finding a workable arrangement; there is no published universal layout that works on every tile.
Restoration tools that support habitats
Demo updates added or rebalanced several systems that help you prepare habitat tiles:
- Straw Mulch for soil support.
- Hand Pump Well and irrigation tools for water management.
- Halfmoon berms for shaping water flow and ground conditions.
- Irrigation bottle, whose cost was reduced in the 19 October 2026 Next Fest patch.
- Tool upgrades, including the Mattock. A deletion bug was fixed; do not discard your main tool.
Flowers grow in real time, and watered soil turns green over roughly a day. A Next Fest patch reduced how quickly mature plants dried out and increased compost and pebble drop rates.

What animals are in The Regreening?
The complete 1.0 bestiary has not been published. Current official materials confirm rabbits, foxes and crows as habitat wildlife, while frogs are named in the game’s wetland description. Other animals may be added or clarified before launch.

Hugging is a deliberate part of the reward loop: official descriptions promise that returning animals can be hugged. Corvelia is a character or spirit associated with crows and is pleased when Crow Habitats are restored; Corvelia should not be described as a crow.
The game also includes folkloric relationships. You befriend ancient spirits inspired by Baltic folklore, helping them in exchange for abilities and, sometimes, shiny objects. An owl emoji in a studio post is not evidence of an additional confirmed habitat species.
How do you progress through maps and quests?
Progression combines world restoration, NPC storylines and crafting. Cleaning an area, improving its ecology and completing local objectives raises that map’s restoration percentage. Quests can award seeds, decorations and crafting recipes while opening routes to new areas.
Known regions and homes
- Earthbound Plains: the starting restored-home region; its restoration track includes a rain reward.
- Junkyard: a full demo area focused on cleaning trash and upcycling materials.
- Gorge: available as a demo sneak peek.
- Cave: one of the areas updated in the demo.
- Earthbound Homes: more than one home can be entered and decorated. “Earthship Home” appears in announcement wording, while “Earthbound Home” is the name used in patch notes.
Viri travels between unlockable biomes. The game has not published a final total for all 1.0 biomes, so the regions above should not be treated as a complete launch list.
World Restoration and map-specific rewards
The World Restoration bar can reach 100% on a map in the demo. Threshold rewards must be claimed once per threshold for each map and are saved correctly across scenes after the Next Fest patch. Rewards are local: unlocking rain in Earthbound Plains does not unlock it in the Junkyard.

Weather and pacing
Dynamic weather was added during Playtest #4. Once rain is unlocked on a map, it is intended to arrive every other day. A bug that caused dust storms to occur daily for some players was fixed, and weather is saved separately for each map. Autosave occurs at the end of the day.
Quest tracking and abilities
The demo adds a Quest Journal, where you can also disable Grandma Laima’s tutorial tips. Viri has a growth ability whose radius was improved after playtester feedback, plus mystical gifts supplied through spirit relationships. An “Unstick Player” button is available if Viri becomes wedged between tiles.
What can you craft and upcycle?
Upcycling turns abandoned junk into useful materials, furniture and decorations. Cleaning trash can unlock recipes, and restoring the world can unlock additional recipes. The crafting table converts recovered materials into items rather than selling them for currency.
The demo added more than 15 ingredients, a complete Upcycled Furniture Set, outdoor decorations, wall furniture, a campfire and Time Capsules. Water-management items such as the irrigation bottle, hand pump well and halfmoon berms connect crafting directly to ecological restoration. Plant synergies are a marketed skill, but no official lookup table of exact combinations has been published.
Who are Viri, Grandma Laima and Corvelia?
- Viri: the player character and last Earthbound descendant charged with bringing nature back.
- Grandma Laima: a tutorial and tips NPC. Her helpful prompts can be disabled in the Quest Journal.
- Corvelia: an NPC or spirit tied to the crow restoration thread and pleased by Crow Habitats. A placement bug that could put Corvelia behind the house was patched.
- Ophis and Lis: two demo characters inspired by fairytales and legends.
- Nature spirits: Baltic-inspired beings who grant abilities in exchange for help and shiny objects.
Is there a The Regreening demo?
Yes. The free Steam demo launched on 1 October 2026 and appeared in Steam Next Fest from 19 to 26 October 2026. It includes Earthbound, Junkyard and Cave content, a Gorge preview, Crow Habitats, the Quest Journal, 11 listed languages and a path to 100% restoration on a map.
At the time of the 29 October 2026 store check, the demo showed a Very Positive rating of 91% from 56 reviews. That is a small, changeable sample, not a guarantee of the finished game. The demo’s habitat yields, blooming cycles, placement balance and several restoration tools have been adjusted during playtest and Next Fest updates.

When does The Regreening come out?
The full game is scheduled to unlock on 7 December 2026. It was not yet purchasable at the 29 October 2026 check, and no full-game price or launch discount had been published.
Positive Impact Games is a women-led Hamburg studio founded in 2024 by five industry veterans; its official site describes a team of six. The prototype received funding from Gamecity Hamburg. The studio says development had lasted about 2.5 years in October 2026. Press materials reported more than 55,000 Steam wishlists on 30 September 2026, while the studio’s 1 October announcement cited more than 50,000; these are differently dated figures, not a gameplay metric.
Is The Regreening on console, Steam Deck or Mac?
At the current release information, The Regreening is confirmed for Windows 10 PC through Steam only. No PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, macOS, Linux or mobile version has been announced. The demo’s Steam Deck compatibility is listed as Unknown, so there is no Steam Deck Verified claim.
Controller support was added during Playtest #4 on 20 July 2026. Later demo notes do not announce its removal, but the store information does not establish it as a final 1.0 feature.

How is The Regreening different from Stardew Valley?
Both games use a cozy, player-directed world, but their central rewards differ. Stardew Valley is built around farming income, town relationships and a finished farm-life structure. The Regreening removes the currency-and-shipping loop and makes ecological improvement the main progression.

The studio has not published the complete 1.0 animal list, the total number of launch biomes, detailed predator-prey rules beyond the rabbit-and-fox habitat overlap, the full-game price, or a launch discount. - Install the free demo from its Steam listing on a Windows 10 PC that meets the minimum specifications.
- Begin in Earthbound Plains and follow the early quests to learn planting, cleaning and habitat placement.
- Use the placement screen’s environmental statistics before committing a habitat tile.
- Improve soil and water with plants, mulch, wells, berms and irrigation items, then revisit habitat stats.
- Clean Junkyard areas to recover crafting materials and unlock recipes, furniture and decorations.
- Track restoration thresholds in the World Restoration bar and claim each map’s rewards separately.
