To attract more animals in The Regreening, restore the land first, then place the matching species habitat. Clear scrap with the mattock, soften and water the soil, grow plants that provide the required vegetation, food, shelter and safety, and keep habitat borders from crowding one another. A habitat sign only works when the surrounding tiles already satisfy that species’ environmental connections. New species are unlocked through habitat recipes, quests, nature-spirit abilities and additional maps—not by buying animals.
The free Steam demo lets you practise this loop across Earthbound Plains and the Junkyard. The full PC release is scheduled for 7 December 2026, although habitat values and species availability can still change before version 1.0.
How do animals return in The Regreening?
Animals return when a placed habitat finds enough suitable land around it. Planting by itself does not summon wildlife: the surrounding grid must provide the species’ vegetation, food, safety and resting conditions. The game shows those relationships as a web of environmental connections and stats, so you can correct a weak habitat before expecting an animal to settle.
- Clear the tile. Remove the junk covering the ground. The mattock is the key clearing tool, and the scrap becomes crafting material. Do not delete the mattock; the October 2026 demo notes specifically warn against doing so.
- Prepare soil and water. Hard, dry ground will not accept seeds. Hand-water first, then improve retention with irrigation bottles, straw mulch, halfmoon berms and hand-pump wells. Weather becomes a reliable helper only after rain is unlocked for that map.
- Plant for habitat functions. Discover seeds and combine plant synergies. A plant may improve soil, shelter an animal, provide food, retain water or help a biome spread. Choose those functions rather than treating crops as a cash crop; the game has no currency or profit-harvest loop.
- Place the habitat marker. Build or find the appropriate habitat recipe, then put its wooden silhouette sign on healthy land. Read the vegetation, food, safety and rest indicators before committing the location.
- Check the borders. The marker claims surrounding grid tiles. Leave enough usable space for the species and tune overlaps where two animals share ground.
- Feed, gift and maintain. Flowers and berries can be harvested for replanting or gifts. Keep the plants alive so the habitat’s food and shelter do not disappear.
- Open the next gate. Story items, quests, nature spirits and new maps reveal more seeds, abilities and habitat recipes.
There are no timers or missed-shipping penalties. A failed attempt usually means dry plants, an unfit environmental web or habitat borders competing for the same tiles.

What does a habitat need before it can fill?
Look at the habitat UI before planting more. It identifies the missing ecological connection instead of using a hidden numeric threshold. The public demo does not publish exact food, safety, rest or radius values, and those numbers have received balancing passes.
Clear enough ground for the range
Scrap blocks planting and can leave too little room for a marker’s surrounding range. Clear a broad patch rather than only the single tile where the sign will stand. Keep the mattock equipped until the intended range is free of debris.
Make soil capable of holding roots
Water hard ground before sowing. A watered tile turns visibly greener over time, while an unprepared tile rejects seeds because roots cannot spread. Straw mulch, berms and wells reduce the amount of hand watering needed as a patch grows.

The same plant can solve several problems: one may improve soil, another may feed an animal, and a third may offer shelter or water retention. Discovering seeds and checking the Flora Compendium helps you build a functioning mini-biome instead of a decorative row.
Read all four habitat categories
- Vegetation: the plant types and overall greenery the animal expects.
- Food: edible plants or other food sources in range. Butterfly guidance explicitly calls for nearby flowers.
- Safety: a secure area, including how neighbouring predator and prey ranges interact.
- Rest space: bedding or calm ground where the animal can remain.
The web of connections can remain incomplete even when the landscape looks green. Add the missing function, then recheck the marker rather than guessing at a hidden radius.
Which animals and habitats are confirmed?
The following species are shown in the announcement material or the October 2026 demo. They are not a complete launch bestiary. Gamecity Hamburg describes the design goal as “dozens of species,” but no official 1.0 count or full list has been published.
| Species | What the game shows | How it enters play | Key planning point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rabbits | Habitat silhouette and requirement UI | Place a rabbit habitat after preparing the surrounding tiles | Vegetation, food, safety and rest; range overlaps with foxes |
| Foxes | Habitat system in the PC Gamer demo | Use the same sign-and-stat process | Plan shared borders so rabbit and fox ranges do not crowd each other |
| Butterflies | Demo tutorial and Earthbound book recipe | Recover the recipe, place the habitat and supply flowers | Nearby flowers are the explicit food requirement |
| Crows | Official 1 October 2026 demo notes | Find, craft and place Crow Habitats | Corvelia is specifically pleased when crows return |
| Frogs | Steam store restoration flavour | Associated with wetlands returning as restoration advances | No documented frog-habitat recipe or numeric condition is public yet |
A May 2026 developer post teased another habitat with a riddle but did not name the animal. Do not infer a species from that screenshot. Likewise, grabbing a crow’s feet to survey the landscape is a traversal moment in announcement coverage, not a substitute for the Crow Habitat recipe.

How do I place a habitat without wasting the range?
Place the marker only after you have inspected the surrounding grid. Habitat borders occupy tiles, so the sign’s position is a layout decision similar to a small city-builder block.

- Stand on prepared ground. The sign cannot compensate for dry, hard soil underneath its range.
- Preview the silhouette and borders. The placement view shows how much space the animal will have. Move the sign until productive vegetation and open rest space sit inside the boundary.
- Check the environmental web. Confirm vegetation, food, safety and rest before placing. If one strand is weak, cancel placement and fix the plants or water.
- Reserve corridors between species. Do not fill every nearby tile with a second sign. Rabbit and fox habitats are the documented example: their ranges can overlap, but both need enough viable tiles to thrive.
- Recheck after growth. Flowers and other plants develop in real time. A location that barely qualifies can fail when a plant dries, so leave room for maintenance.
The in-game tutorial’s advice is simple: pay attention to habitat borders so animals have enough space. Because no public table gives a universal tile radius, use the live border preview for each sign rather than applying a fixed number from a guide.
How do I attract rabbits and foxes together?
Treat rabbit and fox placement as a balancing problem, not as two independent checkboxes. Both habitats use the same requirement categories, and the PC Gamer demo specifically describes tuning their tile overlap so both can thrive.
Start with a shared ecological core
Clear and green a central patch, then plant enough food and shelter to satisfy the first species. Put rest space toward an outer edge so the second marker can claim a different edge without erasing the first animal’s bedding.
Use the border preview before adding the second sign
Place the fox marker where its safety and rest indicators remain positive while the rabbit range still contains food and vegetation. If either web drops, move the sign or remove a conflicting plant arrangement; adding more signs will not solve a bad overlap.
Maintain both ranges
Water demand and growth cycles continue after animals arrive. Check the plants in both borders after weather changes, especially before expanding a neighbouring biome.
How do I get butterflies?
The butterfly habitat recipe comes from an Earthbound book recorded by the demo tutorial. Once the recipe is available, prepare the soil, place the habitat and give the marker access to flowers.
- Find the Earthbound book that contains the butterfly habitat recipe.
- Clear and water a patch where flower plants can root.
- Grow flowers inside the intended habitat border; butterflies need them for food.
- Place the butterfly silhouette and inspect its border and environmental connections.
- Replant flowers or improve watering if the food strand weakens.
The tutorial does not publish a required flower count or radius. Use the marker’s live feedback and keep extra flowers nearby rather than relying on a precise number.

Search your crafting and quest progression for the habitat rather than expecting a generic animal purchase menu. After crafting, clear and prepare the destination, place the sign, and verify its requirements like any other species. The demo notes do not provide a numeric crow range or a separate crow-food table, so follow the habitat UI instead of importing rabbit or butterfly assumptions.
How do I restore wetlands and get frogs?
Frogs are mentioned in the Steam store’s restoration flavour—“frogs return to singing wetlands”—as the world heals. That confirms the ecological theme, but the available material does not document a frog-habitat recipe, a wetland tile radius or a frog-specific unlock.
To prepare for wetland wildlife, restore water and vegetation on the current map, use the World Restoration bar, and watch for map-specific habitat or quest instructions. Do not assume that placing a butterfly, rabbit or crow sign creates a frog habitat; wait for the game to reveal the relevant recipe or requirement.
Which watering method keeps habitats alive?
Hand watering is the starting point. The later systems reduce labour and protect the plants that supply food, shelter and soil improvements. Rain is local to each map, so unlocking it in Earthbound Plains does not unlock it in the Junkyard.
| Method | When to use it | What is confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Hand watering | First cleared patches and urgent dry tiles | Required to soften hard ground before seeds can root |
| Irrigation bottle | Routine watering of planted habitat tiles | Its crafting cost was reduced; the Next Fest patch fixed incorrect removal and refilling behavior |
| Straw mulch | Tiles that dry too quickly | Added as a soil and water-management tool in the demo systems |
| Halfmoon berm | Retaining water around planted areas | Its cost was reduced in the October 2026 balancing pass |
| Hand-pump well | Reliable local water supply | A save/load issue was fixed in the Next Fest patch |
| Unlocked rain | Large restored areas after the World Restoration milestone | Map-specific; after unlocking, rain is intended to arrive about every other day |
The October patch also reduced watering demand because mature plants were drying too fast. Weather includes sunny days, gentle rain, heavy rain and dust storms; dust storms are not intended to occur every day. Cosmetic outdoor decorations and upcycled furniture do not replace watering systems when a habitat is failing.
Why is my habitat not filling?
Use the sign’s requirement display to identify the failing connection. These are the common causes and fixes in the demo loop.
- “No vegetation” or weak greenery: clear more scrap, soften the soil and plant compatible species. Wait for growth before judging the final value.
- Food is missing: add the relevant food plants. For butterflies, that means flowers inside the border.
- Safety or rest is low: move the marker away from a crowded edge, add shelter or bedding, and leave open tiles for resting.
- Seeds will not plant: water the hard ground first. A dry tile cannot spread roots.
- Plants keep drying: use mulch, berms, an irrigation bottle or a hand-pump well; unlock rain on that map when possible.
- Two species conflict: preview both borders and move one habitat. Rabbit and fox ranges need deliberate overlap, not maximum overlap.
- The recipe is absent: progress the relevant story item, quest, spirit request or map. Habitat recipes are gated content.
- The landscape looks restored but wildlife is absent: restoration alone is not a habitat placement. Build the species sign after the ecological stats qualify.
Because numeric thresholds and radii are not publicly documented, screenshots or older guides may show values that changed during demo balancing. Trust the current in-game web and border preview.

How do quests, spirits and maps unlock more species?
Animal variety expands through progression rather than a shop. Quests award seeds and abilities that open later areas, while folklore-inspired nature spirits grant powerful abilities in exchange for help and sometimes shiny objects. Studio-adjacent material frames the spirits as Baltic or broader European folklore; an isolated “German folklore” label in early coverage is less consistent with that description.

Grandma Laima provides guidance, and the Quest Journal now lets you disable her tips. Turning tips off changes the amount of prompting, not the habitat rules. Story rewards can add seeds, abilities and access to later regions.
Use restoration abilities strategically
Viri’s growth ability radius was improved in Playtest #4. It is not an animal habitat, but it can spread greenery faster into a species’ range and make a marginal site viable sooner.
Open the later maps
The demo moves beyond Earthbound Plains into the Junkyard, with a Gorge sneak peek and an updated Cave. Habitat recipes, restoration rewards and weather progress are per map: a World Restoration reward claimed on one map does not automatically repeat on another, and rain unlocked in Earthbound Plains does not carry to the Junkyard.

Use social rewards for their intended purpose
Evening campfires deepen NPC relationships, and hugging animals is the stated emotional reward. Those social actions do not raise habitat food, safety or rest stats, so do not substitute for planting and water management.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I work toward a 100% regreened map?
Full regreening is possible after later balancing, but it is a map-restoration goal rather than a guarantee that every species will fit in one patch. Clear junk, maintain soil moisture, use plant synergies and claim each map’s World Restoration rewards once.
- Clear scrap systematically so every potential planting zone can support roots.
- Install water-retention and irrigation tools before expanding the planted area.
- Use the Flora Compendium to track discovered plants and fill ecological gaps.
- Place habitats only after reserving border space for their requirements.
- Return after weather events to repair dry or storm-damaged plants.
- Advance quests and spirit requests to obtain seeds and abilities for the remaining barren tiles.
Outdoor decorations and upcycled furniture make a restored area attractive, but they are not substitutes for living vegetation or a qualifying habitat. Prioritise systems that change soil, water and plant coverage before cosmetic items.
What should I know about the demo and release?
The PC demo was live from 1 October 2026 and appeared in Steam Next Fest from 19–26 October. It contains 11 languages; the full Steam listing names 12 interface languages, adding Traditional Chinese. The full game is planned for Steam on 7 December 2026.
Positive Impact Games is a women-led Hamburg studio founded in 2024. Its official descriptions refer to five founders and a six-person team. The team says development took 2.5 years; the project received €80,000 in 2024 prototype funding from Gamecity Hamburg. These production details do not alter habitat mechanics, but they explain why demo systems, recipes, blooming cycles, yields and restoration values may still move before launch.

What is the most reliable order for a new habitat?
Use this compact checklist whenever you open a fresh area:
- Clear a wide patch with the mattock and keep the scrap for crafting.
- Water until the soil can accept roots.
- Add mulch, a berm, a bottle or a well if the patch is likely to dry.
- Plant a mix that covers vegetation, food, shelter and water-retention functions.
- Preview the species sign and inspect every environmental connection.
- Reserve border space before placing neighbouring habitats.
- Place the sign, then monitor growth and weather rather than abandoning the area.
- Advance quests, books and map restoration when the desired species recipe is unavailable.
This order prevents the most common mistake: placing a habitat on attractive but ecologically incomplete ground.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I buy animals in The Regreening?
No. The game removes currency and profit-based planting loops, so animals return through habitat restoration and progression. Your resources go into clearing, planting, watering, crafting and helping spirits rather than purchasing wildlife.
Do habitat borders have a fixed number of tiles?
A public numeric radius has not been published. Each placement preview shows the current border, and that live outline is more reliable than a fixed number because demo balancing can change before launch.
Does rain work everywhere after I unlock it once?
No. Weather restoration is map-specific. Unlocking rain in Earthbound Plains does not unlock it in the Junkyard, and each map has its own World Restoration rewards.
What happens if I turn off Grandma Laima’s tips?
The Quest Journal lets you disable her tutorial prompts. It does not remove recipes, quests, habitat requirements or other progression; it only reduces the guidance shown while you play.
