Yes—the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B with 3GB of RAM is a real, manufacturer-offered configuration, announced by Raspberry Pi on April 1, 2026. It is a memory option, not a faster version of the Pi 4: more RAM can help when a workload needs it, but the capacity alone does not prove that a particular desktop, game, or server will run well.

What the 3GB Raspberry Pi 4 is—and why it exists

Raspberry Pi introduced the 3GB Pi 4 Model B as another memory-density choice for people whose applications do not require a higher-capacity model. The board retains the Pi 4’s familiar processor and connectivity; the change called out in the announcement is the amount of memory. The company said it wanted customers not to pay for more memory than they need.

The announcement came on April 1, 2026, and said the model was orderable through Raspberry Pi Approved Resellers around the world. The current product brief, updated October 1, 2026, lists Pi 4 Model B configurations with 1GB, 2GB, 3GB, 4GB, or 8GB of LPDDR4 memory. Raspberry Pi’s launch announcement and its current product brief are the relevant references for the newer configuration.

Does 3GB make the Pi 4 good enough for everyday use?

It depends on what “everyday use” means. RAM gives the operating system and running programs room to keep active data available. If the combined working memory demands fit, an additional gigabyte over a 2GB board may be useful; if the workload does not use that memory, the capacity itself does not make the processor faster.

The available official information does not establish browser-tab limits, desktop smoothness, game frame rates, or server capacity for this 3GB model. Those results depend on the applications, operating system, storage, settings, and workload. Treat “3GB” as a capacity specification, not a performance guarantee.

For context, the board uses a Broadcom BCM2711 64-bit quad-core Cortex-A72 processor running at 1.8GHz. Its key interfaces include dual-band 2.4GHz/5GHz Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0 with BLE, Gigabit Ethernet, two USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, two micro-HDMI ports, microSD, and a 40-pin GPIO header. The product brief specifies a USB-C 5V input with a 3A minimum and an operating temperature range of 0–50°C. These capabilities are useful context, but they do not substitute for workload-specific testing.

How to choose among Pi 4 memory capacities

The Pi 4’s 1GB, 2GB, 3GB, 4GB, and 8GB options are choices to match to software and budget, not a universal ranking of “slow” to “fast.” Consider what you plan to run and whether its memory requirements are documented. If your setup must run several services or applications together, account for their combined needs rather than judging each one in isolation.

  • Choose by workload: Look up the software’s requirements and consider what else will run at the same time. Raspberry Pi’s launch guidance recommends right-sizing memory to the application; it does not set a universal RAM threshold for named tasks.
  • Compare the price where you will buy: The launch announcement gave an announced price of $83.75 for the 3GB model. That is Raspberry Pi’s April 2026 figure, not a verified current retail price or a promise of availability in every market.
  • Check software compatibility: The 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS supports Pi 4B and can handle more memory. The 32-bit version uses less memory and may be more compatible with some older software or hardware. Choose based on the applications and devices you need to use.
  • Keep RAM separate from storage and setup costs: The microSD card holds the operating system and files; it is not system RAM. Display cabling and a suitable power supply are separate requirements.

Raspberry Pi also said in its April 2026 announcement that LPDDR4 DRAM prices had risen seven-fold over the prior year. That is the company’s stated market context, not an independently established market measurement.

  • 1GB, 2GB, 4GB or 8GB LPDDR4-3200 SDRAM (depending on model)
  • 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz IEEE 802.11ac wireless, Bluetooth 5.0, BLE Gigabit Ethernet

Which Raspberry Pi OS should you use?

Raspberry Pi OS is the manufacturer’s official, supported operating system. On the official download page checked October 4, 2026, the current 64-bit desktop release is based on Debian 13 “Trixie,” released September 15, 2026, and lists kernel 6.18. The page offers desktop, Full (desktop plus recommended applications), and Lite editions, as well as 32-bit and legacy Bookworm options. The latest listed edition is not the only valid choice.

Raspberry Pi’s OS documentation says 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS is intended for newer 64-bit boards including Pi 4, can run both 64-bit and 32-bit software, and can handle more memory. It describes 32-bit as using less memory and potentially offering better compatibility with older software or hardware. That is a general trade-off, not a rule that every Pi 4 user should install 64-bit.

Vilros Raspberry Pi 4 4GB Basic Starter Kit with Fan-Cooled Heavy-Duty Aluminum Alloy Case
  • KEEP YOUR PROCESSOR COOL: The busier a processor gets the more it heats up, leading to sub-optimal performance. To prevent this common issue, this kit includes an aluminum alloy case with a pre-installed fan. The aluminum alloy actively draws the heat from the pi board, while the fan further cools the board and case. These cooling mechanisms will help push the limits of your processor and increase its flexibility.
  • SIZABLE RAM: This Raspberry Pi 4 comes equipped with 4GB of RAM, which is the same amount of RAM or more RAM than many mainstream laptops contain. With 4GB of RAM, your processor will be capable of running retro gaming setups and common computer applications, media players, and much more!
  • SIMPLE TO TURN ON & OFF: This kit includes a USB-C Raspberry Pi 4 compatible power supply with an easy-to-use on/off switch that was designed specifically for the Raspberry Pi 4 model to streamline processing.
  • IMPROVEMENTS FROM PREVIOUS MODELS: This latest model of the Raspberry Pi 4 offers groundbreaking increases in processor speed, multimedia performance, connectivity, memory, and more! The desktop performance of this model is comparable to entry-level x86 PC systems.
  • VERSATILE USE: The Raspberry Pi may have a small processor, but it is a highly adaptable little computer that can replace your desktop PC. Its functions range from practical to nostalgic since it can power an ad-blocking server as easily as it can power an outmoded gaming setup. Other uses include but are not limited to printing from non-wireless printers, playing media, making time-lapse videos, and building multiplayer network game servers and motion-capture security systems.

Lite has no desktop environment and is described by Raspberry Pi as useful for headless servers and embedded systems. If you need a graphical desktop, choose a desktop edition instead. Check your software’s requirements before choosing an architecture or release. See the Raspberry Pi OS downloads page and the Raspberry Pi OS introduction for current choices and compatibility guidance.

  • microSD card: Raspberry Pi’s setup guidance recommends at least 32GB for Raspberry Pi OS Desktop or Full, and 8GB for Lite. These are starting recommendations, not maximum capacities; files and workload can call for more space. Faster storage with higher read/write speeds can improve overall performance.
  • Power supply: The product brief specifies USB-C power at 5V and a 3A minimum.
  • Monitor connection: A Pi 4B monitor connects through micro-HDMI, using a micro-HDMI-to-HDMI cable or adapter.

Consult Raspberry Pi’s setup instructions for storage and connection guidance, and the Pi 4 Model B product brief for board specifications.

Why older Pi 4 specification pages may omit 3GB

The 2024 Raspberry Pi 4 Model B datasheet predates the 2026 announcement. It lists older memory options in its introduction and has a different set in its hardware feature bullets; it does not document the later 3GB configuration. That omission is a document-version issue, not evidence that the newer model is fictitious. For the 3GB option, use the 2026 announcement and the product brief updated October 1, 2026, rather than relying on the older Pi 4 Model B datasheet.
