The newest Monster Train 2 clan is The Punished, led by Archus, Darkness Incarnate. It is a paid DLC clan, not an achievement unlock: own Monster Train 2, then buy and install The Punished when it launches on 10 November 2026. The announced price is $7.99 USD. No extra Pyre Heart requirement or combat counter has been published. As of 29 October 2026, the DLC is not yet available to play. If you meant one of the clans already in the game, its unlock requirements are below.
How do I unlock The Punished in Monster Train 2?
Buy and install Monster Train 2: The Punished on the same platform as the base game after its 10 November 2026 launch. You need to own Monster Train 2 first; Steam explicitly lists the base game as a requirement. The announced US price is $7.99, and the DLC is planned for PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox.
- Get the base game. It launched on 21 May 2025 and is available on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series. Steam lists it at $24.99; storefront prices and availability can differ by region. The PlayStation 5 version joins PlayStation Plus Monthly Games on 3 November 2026, one week before the DLC launch.
- Wishlist or purchase the DLC. The Punished is Steam app 4739980. Shiny Shoe and Big Fan Games announced a $7.99 USD price. You can find the official wishlist link; on consoles, look for the DLC in the relevant platform store. Localized prices may differ from the announced US price.
- Wait until 10 November 2026. As of 29 October, Steam marked the DLC as not yet available. Wishlisting does not grant early access.
- Install it on the platform where you play. The published materials describe access as tied to owning the DLC, following the same purchase-and-install pattern as the earlier paid Railforged clan. They have not announced an additional story mission, Pyre Heart, or in-game objective for The Punished.
- Select The Punished and progress its clan level. The first champion is available with the clan. The second champion unlocks at clan level 5, and cards enter the draft pool as you level the clan.
There is no published evidence that The Punished requires an achievement, a certain number of fights, or a special story milestone after installation. The game could receive launch-day changes, but until such a requirement is announced, treat DLC ownership and installation as the unlock path.

What does The Punished DLC add?
The Punished is a self-damage clan built around turning friendly-unit damage into combat benefits. Its leader, Archus, Darkness Incarnate, uses the Monolith and the Devotion mechanic to strengthen the clan over a run. The design is a risk-and-reward alternative to the existing clans, rather than an extra objective to complete before you can play.

During battle, you can spend Ember and discard cards as Tribute to the Monolith. This raises Devotion across the run; higher Devotion empowers certain cards and gives newly summoned units stacks of Zeal, which increases Attack and maximum Health. That makes discarded cards a cost you weigh against a longer-term payoff, not simply a way to clear your hand.

Archus is described as a former angel and Seraph’s younger brother. After trying to overthrow Seraph, he was cast into Heaven’s Maw, where he discovered how to turn pain into might. Fel, the Banished champion, abandoned him. The clan’s theme follows that story: take deliberate risks with your own units to activate effects and build power.
A small group of cards has been revealed ahead of launch. Reaper of Suffering is a 60-attack, 25-defense sweep unit that is suppressed when first played. Scarred Justicar gains 15 attack through Punish; Collector of Sorrows has a new Restitution ability; and the common equipment Shackles of Spite makes its unit deal double damage while its life total is at 50 percent or less. Several revealed spells emphasize global or self-damage. These are advance reveals, not a complete card list.

Is The Punished available now, and what platforms are included?
No. On 29 October 2026, The Punished had been announced but had not launched, and Steam listed it as not yet available. The planned launch is 10 November on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox.

Nintendo Switch 2, iOS, and Android versions of the game, with The Punished available on those platforms, are promised later in 2026, but no calendar dates have been announced. Do not assume that the DLC is playable on those versions on 10 November. The Steam DLC listing names English interface, audio, and subtitles, with French, German, Spanish (Spain), and Japanese interface and subtitles among 10 supported languages. Console localization and pricing may vary.
Is The Punished free, or do I need an achievement?
The Punished is paid DLC: the studio-announced price is $7.99 USD, and the base game is required. No achievement or separate in-game unlock task has been announced. This differs from several clans already in the base game, which unlock through counters accumulated across runs, and from returning clans that use the Pyre Heart progression gate.
The announcement called The Punished Monster Train 2’s second and final paid DLC, and said it would conclude the series of post-launch content updates. The earlier paid release, Destiny of the Railforged, cost $9.99 according to FullCleared’s 2026 listing; it also included the Soul Savior mode and the Railforged clan. Shiny Shoe and Big Fan Games announced that Monster Train 2 had passed 1 million players in 2026, but no sales figure or player-count split was published.

If you searched for “new clan” intending one of the clans added to the game since launch, these are the current requirements. The live roster is 12 playable clans in patch 2.2.1; The Punished is expected to become the 13th after its November launch.

For the Luna Coven, Underlegion, and Lazarus League counters, put the clan you want to unlock in the Primary Clan slot when you select clans and click Depart. Counters accumulate across runs; you do not need to win. The primary clan receives 100 percent of run score as XP, while the allied clan receives 50 percent, so make the clan you are leveling primary when practical. The current counter is shown on the Primary or Allied Clan selection screen.
The new-clan unlock counters are distinct: Luna Coven counts enemies defeated by spell cards, Underlegion counts Consume cards, and Lazarus League counts Equipment attachments. Do not substitute general kills, playing a Consume card without its Consume effect, or equipping an item to an enemy for those requirements.
How do I unlock the returning clans?
Returning clans are behind the Pyre Heart story progression. Unlock six of the game’s 13 Pyre Hearts; the sixth unlocks Hellhorned and reveals the remaining persistent clan objectives. The hearts are selected from Depart, in the Pyre Heart panel on the left just below Allied Clan. Hover over locked hearts to see their requirements, which can include trials, particular fights, and Dimensional Challenges.
Most Pyre Heart objectives can be completed at low Covenant and do not require winning a run. Once the six-heart gate is cleared, work on the four clan-specific counters:

- Hellhorned: unlocked by obtaining the sixth Pyre Heart.
- Awoken: restore 300 lost health. Healing only counts when it restores health a unit has already lost, so a full-health unit cannot advance the counter. Luna Coven and the Wyngh’s Spirit Pyre Heart can help.
- Stygian Guard: cast five spells in one turn on five separate turns. Those five qualifying turns can span multiple runs. Luna Coven’s Moon Ritual and Witchweave can help generate spell plays. A single qualifying turn is not enough.
- Umbra: increase room capacity 20 times. Heaven’s Light after bosses and the Bogwurm’s Growth Pyre Heart can help; capacity increases count even when the extra room is not essential to your plan.
- Melting Remnant: Reform or Reanimate 50 units. Lazarus League is a useful partner because of its related mechanics.
Once these clans are available, their card pools and champions still have clan-level progression. The six-heart gate is not the same thing as owning paid DLC: Wurmkin is free after the gate, while Railforged requires its DLC purchase.

Unlocking a clan makes its first champion available, but it does not immediately open every card and champion option. The second champion unlocks at clan level 5, and cards are added to the draft pool as the clan levels. Patch 2.2.1 lists 24 champions, 72 upgrade paths, 216 path tiers, and 127 clan-level card rewards across the game.
For a few examples of the track, Banished receives Imprisoned Zephyr at level 5 and Wyngh’s Radiance at level 10; Lazarus League receives Risky Operation at level 5 and Tome of Horrors at level 10; and Luna Coven receives Celestial Storm at level 5 and Heavenfall at level 10. Railforged has Sentry Turret at level 5 and Assembly Room at level 10. These are examples, not a complete list of level rewards.

Monster Train 2 launched on 21 May 2025, and its roster and unlocks have changed through free updates and paid DLC. Banished and Pyreborne are both start clans in patch 2.2.1. Luna Coven’s counter is 40 spell-card kills, not 70; Underlegion’s is 75 Consume cards, not 120. Those two reductions came in a May 2025 patch.

Wurmkin is now available through the free 2.0 update after the six-Pyre-Heart gate; launch-era pages that describe it as unavailable are obsolete. For Stygian Guard, the current requirement is five spells in one turn on five separate turns, not just one successful turn. The Punished is different from these free progression unlocks: it is a paid clan scheduled for November 2026.
The release sequence helps explain why the current answer depends on what a player means by “new”: the base game arrived in May 2025, followed by the free Lost Arsenal update in September 2025 and free Echoes From the Void update in November 2025. In February 2026, the Railforged DLC launched alongside the free Wurmkin clan. The Punished was announced on 28 October 2026 as the second and final DLC.

Can I play The Punished on Nintendo Switch 2 or mobile on 10 November?
Those versions are promised later in 2026, but no dates have been announced for Switch 2, iOS, or Android. The confirmed 10 November launch platforms are PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox.
How many Pyre Hearts are in Monster Train 2?
The game has 13 Pyre Hearts in total. The returning-clan story gate described here is six hearts; the remaining hearts have their own objectives and are not a requirement for The Punished.
