For most people buying a console specifically for Grand Theft Auto VI, choose a PlayStation 5. Buy the 1TB disc model if you still use physical games or 4K Blu-rays; choose the Digital Edition if your library is download-only. Stay with Xbox if your friends, purchases, and Game Pass library are already there. The Xbox Series S can run GTA 6, but the 512GB version leaves very little usable space, so the 1TB model is the safer budget choice. The PS5 Pro is optional: it is the only model with an official PS5 Pro Enhanced label, but Rockstar has not explained what that means for GTA 6 or promised a higher frame rate.
GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. It is not announced for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch 2, or PC. The game costs extra on every console, and its boxed version contains a download code rather than a last-generation disc.

Which consoles run GTA 6?
On launch day, the supported systems are the PlayStation 5 family and Xbox Series X|S. That includes the original PS5, PS5 Slim, PS5 Digital Edition, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X and both Series S storage capacities.
Rockstar’s official GTA VI page gives November 19, 2026 as the release date and displays the message “Plays Best On PlayStation 5.” PlayStation’s listing says, “The game is not playable on PlayStation 4.” There is no announced PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch 2 or PC launch version, so buying an older console or waiting for a new PC solely for launch day is not a reliable plan.

Some PlayStation metadata displayed November 18, but that appears to be a regional or timezone listing. Treat Rockstar’s November 19 date as the canonical release date.
Which console should I buy for GTA 6?
Buy the standard PS5 Digital Edition for the simplest value, or the disc PS5 if you want physical games outside GTA 6. Choose Xbox Series X when your household already owns Xbox games, has Game Pass subscriptions, or plays with Xbox friends. Choose Series S only when the lower entry price matters more than storage and image quality. Choose PS5 Pro only when you already want its benefits in several games, not because GTA 6 is confirmed to run faster on it.
Best default: PlayStation 5
The PS5 is the safest all-round recommendation because Rockstar explicitly says GTA 6 plays best on PlayStation 5, and the PlayStation listing confirms DualSense vibration, adaptive triggers, controller-speaker effects, Tempest 3D Audio and PS5 Pro support. Jordan Minor of PCMag described the PS5—base, digital or Pro—as the best option for most gamers when considering power, price and popularity.

The disc and Digital models install the same GTA 6 files and deliver the same game. The disc model costs more because of its drive, not because GTA 6 performs better on it.
Best for an Xbox household: Series X
Series X makes sense when your account already contains Xbox purchases, your friends play on Xbox, or Game Pass is central to your household. It includes a 4K UHD Blu-ray drive and has 1TB of storage. Its $799.99 list price is higher than the equivalent PS5 price, and GTA 6 is not confirmed as a Game Pass launch inclusion, so buying Series X solely for this one game is difficult to justify on price.
Best low-cost Xbox: Series S 1TB
Series S is a confirmed GTA 6 platform and the 1TB version avoids the most serious storage problem. It is digital-only, which suits GTA 6’s code-in-box physical release. Microsoft and Rockstar have not published a GTA 6 resolution or frame-rate comparison between Series S and Series X, so do not buy Series S expecting the same image quality or performance headroom as Series X.
PS5 or Xbox Series X for GTA 6?
The choice is less about a confirmed GTA 6 performance difference and more about the ecosystem you will use for years. The PS5 costs less at current US list prices and has Rockstar’s “Plays Best On PlayStation 5” marketing. Xbox offers Game Pass for other games, Xbox backward compatibility and an existing friends list for many households.

Sony raised PS5 prices on April 2, 2026, and Microsoft raised Xbox Series prices on August 1, 2026. Retail prices and stock can change before launch, and holiday allocations may be tight. A cheaper used or certified-refurbished console can be sensible if it arrives early enough for setup and preload.

Do I need a PS5 Pro for GTA 6?
No. The PS5 Pro is not required, and Rockstar has not announced a GTA 6 frame rate, resolution, graphics mode or specific Pro enhancement. PlayStation marks the game “PS5 Pro Enhanced,” but that badge only confirms that the developer supports some Pro-specific improvements; it does not promise 60 frames per second.
The Pro costs $899.99, includes 2TB, and does not include a disc drive. A compatible add-on drive costs extra. Sony describes Pro technology such as PSSR upscaling, advanced ray tracing and higher frame rates, but developers choose which features to implement. GTA 6’s open-world CPU workload could limit frame rate even when the Pro has more GPU capacity.
A Pro is easier to justify with a large 4K HDR television and a library of other Pro-enhanced games. On a 1080p display, the visible difference is smaller. If GTA 6 is the only reason you are upgrading, put the price difference toward the game, storage expansion or a better display instead.

Yes. Rockstar lists Xbox Series X|S, so both the 512GB and 1TB Series S are launch-supported consoles. The important limitation is storage: the 512GB model has about 364GB usable after the operating system, leaving less room for GTA 6 alongside other large current-generation games.
The 1TB Series S costs $599.99, the same listed price as the PS5 Digital Edition. It remains a lower-performance, digital-only box, but the extra storage makes it a much safer long-term purchase than the 512GB model. If you choose 512GB, budget for an official Xbox Storage Expansion Card and expect to manage installed games actively.
Do I need a disc drive for GTA 6?
No. Rockstar says the physical edition contains a download code inside the box. It becomes available on November 12 to support preload, while the game remains locked until November 19. A PS5 Digital Edition or Xbox Series S therefore plays GTA 6 in the same way as a disc-equipped console.
Pay for a drive only for your wider library: used physical games, resale, 4K Blu-rays or existing discs. The boxed GTA 6 release is not a last-generation disc that can run on PS4 or Xbox One. Sony’s reported plan to reduce physical-disc production for new PlayStation releases from January 2028 makes digital hardware more defensible for a new download-only library, although a drive remains useful for the large existing used market.

Rockstar has not published GTA 6’s install size or minimum free-space requirement. Online claims of 150GB to 250GB are guesses, not specifications. Red Dead Redemption 2’s listed 105GB minimum is only a comparison and does not predict GTA 6’s size.

As a practical buying rule, prefer 1TB or more. Approximate usable capacities are 667GB on the original PS5, 842GB on PS5 Slim, 1.89TB on PS5 Pro, 802GB on Xbox Series X and 364GB on the 512GB Series S. A console already filled with 100GB-plus games may need expansion before preload.
- PS5 and PS5 Pro: install a compatible PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD with a suitable heatsink. USB drives can archive or transfer PS5 games, but current-generation games must be moved back to internal or M.2 storage to play.
- Xbox Series X|S: use an official Storage Expansion Card, such as a licensed card compatible with the Xbox expansion slot. USB storage is useful for moving and archiving games, not for equivalent direct play of Series-optimized titles.
Do not buy an expansion drive solely because of an unofficial GTA 6 size rumor. Check Rockstar’s eventual requirement, then choose the correct storage type for your console.
What GTA 6 performance features are confirmed?
Official listings confirm features, not a performance target. PlayStation lists PS5 Pro Enhanced, DualSense vibration and trigger effects, while Xbox lists the title as Optimized for Xbox Series X|S. Neither store listing gives a frame rate, resolution, HDR mode or ray-tracing mode.
PlayStation says DualSense vibrations react to choices and environmental factors across Leonida and Vice City, adaptive triggers provide dynamic resistance, and the PS5 SSD enables near-instant loading. Rockstar also says its extended look was captured entirely from in-game footage on PS5.
Expectations of 30fps on base consoles, approximately 1440p output or a very unlikely 60fps target come from published analysis and commentary, not Rockstar specifications. Treat Series S resolution predictions and any claimed graphics modes the same way. They may be informed opinions, but they are not purchase guarantees.
How much should I budget for GTA 6?
The Standard Edition costs $79.99 and the Ultimate Edition costs $99.99. Those prices are separate from the console. Standard includes the game, the Vintage Vice City Pack, one month of GTA+ and seven-day preload access on the PlayStation listing; Ultimate adds the Ultimate Edition Upgrade.
Purchases made before November 20, 2026 include the Vintage Vice City Pack. Should I buy a used or refurbished PS5 before GTA 6?

On October 20, 2026, Swappa’s lowest listed examples included an original Digital PS5 at $454, Slim Digital at $501, Slim disc at $546, Series X at $540 and Series S at $326. Those are snapshots, not guaranteed prices. Certified-refurbished examples reported by IGN included an original PS5 around $539.99–$549.99, with certified Digital and disc options around $499 and $549 respectively.
Used-console checklist
- Confirm the exact model and storage capacity; do not confuse a 512GB Series S with the 1TB version.
- Confirm the controller, power cable and HDMI cable are included.
- For disc models, test reading and ejecting a disc.
- Check every USB port, HDMI output, wireless connection and controller stick.

Is there a GTA 6 PS5 bundle?

How should I prepare for launch?
- Choose the ecosystem first. Pick PS5 for the default value and DualSense features; stay with Xbox for your existing account, friends and library.
- Choose storage. Prefer 1TB or more. Add the correct M.2 SSD or Xbox expansion card if your current free space is low.
- Decide whether you need a drive. GTA 6 itself does not require one because the boxed copy is a download code.
