Why did EA shut down BioWare?

What the announcement does not prove
EA did not publish a BioWare profitability breakdown, sales table or a statement blaming a particular game. It is therefore not accurate to present the closure as officially caused by one release, one review score or one financial result.
How did BioWare’s scope narrow before the closure?
The shutdown followed several public reductions in the studio’s responsibilities between 2023 and 2025.

Did Anthem, Andromeda or The Veilguard cause BioWare to close?

That history helps explain why a company might reduce risk and prioritize fewer projects, but it remains external context rather than a proven causal chain. EA’s statement uses portfolio strategy language, not a game-by-game accounting. A careful reading is that repeated commercial and reception challenges may have influenced the strategic environment, while the documented decision was to concentrate investment and end the early Mass Effect work.
What happened to the BioWare team?
BioWare’s workforce was reduced and redistributed over several stages. The 2023 announcement specifically counted approximately 50 eliminated roles. In 2025, BioWare said many colleagues had been matched to jobs elsewhere within EA rather than implying that every employee was dismissed.
The Associated Press later reported, attributing the figure to Bloomberg, that EA announced roughly 400 layoffs in 2026, including about 50 at BioWare. That is a reported total for EA’s broader cuts, not an EA-published BioWare workforce table, so it should not be read as a complete headcount history for the studio.
Did EA cancel the next Mass Effect?

“Canceled” is therefore a fair description of the announced early-development effort, but it should not be expanded into a claim that no future Mass Effect game can ever exist. The available statements simply do not provide a successor plan.
Is Mass Effect or Dragon Age dead after BioWare closed?
No. The closure ended BioWare as a studio and ended early development on the next Mass Effect project, but the announcements did not retire either intellectual property. Tom’s Hardware likewise reported that neither series had been declared dead.
BioWare’s own catalog identifies Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect and Dragon Age as defining creations. Mass Effect Legendary Edition, released in 2021, remains a distinct completed collection rather than evidence of a new project or a promise about the franchise’s future.

Did EA sell BioWare after announcing the closure?

Why did BioWare move Star Wars: The Old Republic to another developer?
