Massive Entertainment says The Division franchise has reached 50 million lifetime players as of October 27, 2026. The figure is an accumulated reach total for games under The Division umbrella, not a published count of copies sold. The announcement covers the 2016 original game and 2019’s The Division 2; it also confirms that The Division 3 remains in development without a release window.
How many people have played The Division?
The franchise has recorded 50 million lifetime players, according to Massive Entertainment in a report published by Insider Gaming in 2026. “Lifetime players” indicates cumulative player reach across the franchise’s games over time. The report does not provide a title-by-title, platform, country, or access-type breakdown, and it does not define the total as copies sold.
The milestone applies to the The Division umbrella rather than to one specific release. The released series currently identified in the announcement consists of Tom Clancy’s The Division (2016) and Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 (2019).
Did The Division really reach 50 million players?
Yes. Massive Entertainment announced the 50 million lifetime-player milestone in 2026, as reported by Insider Gaming. It is the latest public franchise-wide figure cited in the available reporting.

For context, Ubisoft said in May 2021 that the universe had built a community of more than 40 million players. Ubisoft executive director Alain Corre described that earlier figure as 40 million unique players reached during the franchise’s first five years. The 2026 announcement uses the wording “lifetime players,” so the two statements should be treated as milestones reported under different descriptions rather than as a precise year-by-year growth calculation.
What does “50 million lifetime players” mean?
It means the publisher is counting accumulated player participation across the franchise’s lifetime. It does not, by itself, tell you how many individual people are currently active, how many copies were purchased, or how many players came from each game.
- Not a sales total: a player can gain access through a purchase, subscription, promotion, or another access method, so player reach and units sold are different measures.
- Not a concurrent count: the milestone does not show how many people were playing at the same time or how many remain active today.
- No public breakdown in the announcement: the reported figure does not separate the original game from The Division 2, or identify platform and geographic shares.
- Methodology is not fully defined: the available report does not explain how repeat accounts, trial access, or other access types are handled.
Which Division games are included?
The current milestone reporting identifies two released games and one future project.

| Game | Release information | Status in the milestone context |
|---|---|---|
| Tom Clancy’s The Division | Released in 2016 | Released franchise title covered by the umbrella total |
| Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 | Released in 2019 | Released franchise title covered by the umbrella total |
| The Division 3 | No release date announced in the cited report | In development; no evidence that it contributes released-player activity to the 50 million figure |
The wording “under The Division umbrella” leaves the precise accounting scope to the publisher. The public report does not list separate totals for expansions, companion products, or individual editions.
What is known about The Division 3?
Massive Entertainment is continuing development of The Division 3. The 2026 report gives no launch window, platform list, story details, or pricing information, so any release-date claim beyond “in development” would be speculation.
That status also matters when interpreting the 50 million milestone: the announcement identifies the original game and The Division 2 as the central released titles, while The Division 3 is a future project rather than an announced, playable release.

Which Division game should you buy?
For someone choosing a currently released entry, Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 is the clearest product starting point named in the milestone coverage. It is the franchise’s 2019 sequel and the title most directly associated with a current physical-product search. Check the exact platform, region, edition or SKU, stock status, price, and included content before purchasing, because those details vary by listing and market.

Choose The Division 2 if you want the named current sequel
The 2019 sequel is the most straightforward choice for a new purchase based on the available reporting. Confirm whether a listing is a base game, an edition with expansions, or a used physical copy, since the included content can change the value of otherwise similar offers.

Why is the 50 million milestone significant?
The number shows that The Division has expanded well beyond its launch as a single 2016 game. Ubisoft’s 2021 update described plans for additional games and transmedia projects, including an original novel through a publishing partnership with Aconyte. That broader universe strategy helps explain why franchise-level reach, rather than one game’s sales, is the headline metric.
Even so, the milestone should be read as evidence of long-term reach, not as a complete health report. Without active-user, revenue, retention, or title-by-title data, it cannot establish how engagement is distributed across the two released games.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the 50 million figure include The Division 3?
The cited announcement describes The Division 3 as in development and gives no release window. It identifies the 2016 original and 2019 sequel as the released games, so readers should not assume the unreleased project supplied player activity to the milestone.

Is 50 million players the same as 50 million unique people?
The 2026 wording is “lifetime players,” and the report does not publish a unique-player methodology. It therefore should not be presented as a verified count of 50 million distinct individuals.
Where did the earlier 40 million-player figure come from?
Ubisoft reported more than 40 million players in a May 2021 universe update, describing that audience as 40 million unique players reached during the franchise’s first five years. That statement predates the newer 50 million lifetime-player announcement.
Can I use the milestone to estimate The Division 2 sales?
No. The public figure combines the franchise and is not reported as units sold for The Division 2. It also lacks a platform, region, edition, and access-type breakdown, so a sequel-specific sales estimate would not be supported.
