Choose The Division 2 if you want the safer default for a new purchase: Ubisoft is still running events, describing an expanding endgame and announcing more content. Choose The Division if your priority is beginning with the original post-outbreak New York story or playing its earlier expansions, especially Underground, Survival and Last Stand.
This recommendation is time-sensitive. As of October 29, 2026, The Division 2’s crossplay rollout had not yet become a reason to assume friends on different systems could play together immediately, while the original game still remained available for purchase. The sections below separate story, support, multiplayer, editions and buying format so you can make the choice that fits your group.

| Name | Best for | Key spec | Edition note | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Division 2 | New players who want current events and a developing endgame | Campaign and co-op for up to four players; Echoes of Central Park scheduled for November 3, 2026 | Warlords of New York and Battle for Brooklyn are listed separately; a PS4 disc installation is documented by Ubisoft | Oct 2026 |
| The Division | Players who want the original outbreak-era New York story and classic expansions | Original storefront dated March 8, 2016; Definitive Edition includes three expansions | Definitive Edition, dated February 3, 2026, includes Underground, Survival, Last Stand and cosmetic packs | Oct 2026 |
Which game should most new players choose?
For most newcomers, start with The Division 2. It is Ubisoft’s active-content option in October 2026: the Red Moon Rising event was live, further development was being announced, and Echoes of Central Park was scheduled for November 3. That gives a new player a current campaign followed by an endgame that is still receiving attention.

The original remains the better first choice when the setting and chronology matter more than current content. Ubisoft’s anniversary material presents it as the game’s New York experience, and its 2026 Definitive Edition is a convenient way to obtain the original campaign alongside its three major expansions. It has not been shut down or withdrawn from sale.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This is a preference-based recommendation, not a claim that one game has a measured quality score or a larger active population. No reliable, comparable all-platform player-count figure is established for either title, so population should not be used as an invented tie-breaker.
What kind of setting and story do you want?
The original The Division is the starting point for the franchise’s post-outbreak New York story. Its appeal is the earlier atmosphere, campaign order and the modes added through its original expansion cycle. If you want to see the premise from the beginning rather than enter a later chapter, this is the natural pick.
The Division 2 is the follow-up experience with its own campaign and later endgame content. You do not need to treat it as a replacement for the first game’s setting: choose it when current activities, seasonal events and future additions matter more than beginning at the franchise’s first chapter.
Story preference is more useful than arguing about which game’s atmosphere is “better.” Snowy New York is a reason to choose the first title for some players, but that is an individual taste, not a universal ranking. The two games serve different starting goals:
- Choose The Division for the original outbreak narrative, New York setting and the earlier expansion modes.
- Choose The Division 2 for a newer campaign context and an endgame tied to ongoing events and announced content.
Which game has the stronger reason to keep playing in 2026?
The Division 2 has the clearer current-support advantage. Ubisoft’s October coverage described the Red Moon Rising event as live and identified Echoes of Central Park as planned for November 3, 2026. That scheduled DLC is future content as of October 29; it should not be described as already available. The announcement also indicates an announced Level 40 boost, so buyers should check the final release details rather than assume the boost has already shipped.

The original’s value is concentrated in its completed package of campaign and expansions rather than a promise of newly announced content. The Definitive Edition’s three included expansions are Underground, Survival and Last Stand, with cosmetic packs also listed. That makes it attractive to someone who wants a defined set of older modes, not necessarily to someone selecting a game for the next wave of updates.
An anniversary article marking ten years of the first game establishes franchise chronology, not a current-player measurement. The absence of a trustworthy shared population figure means that neither game should be sold to readers with unsupported claims about busier matchmaking or guaranteed queue times.

Can friends on different platforms play together?
Not as a guaranteed purchase decision on October 29, 2026. Ubisoft announced on October 13 that The Division 2 crossplay would begin rolling out after the November 3 Central Park launch, gradually during November, with full availability planned by Season 4. A planned rollout is not the same as crossplay being live on launch day or on every platform.
The original is more definite: Ubisoft Help states, “At this time, there is no cross-platform support for The Division.” That statement concerns The Division, not its sequel.
Do not confuse cross-progression with crossplay. Ubisoft documents sharing The Division 2 progress among Epic, Luna, Ubisoft Connect PC and Steam, subject to account and content conditions. Cross-progression lets an eligible account carry progress between supported PC services; it does not establish console-to-PC co-op or prove that friends on different systems can join the same session.

How do solo and co-op options affect the choice?
Ubisoft describes The Division 2 as playable solo or cooperatively with up to four players, with a campaign and endgame. That makes it the easier recommendation when you want a clearly documented squad size and the option to move between solo progression and group play.
The supplied official material does not establish a directly comparable current matchmaking population or a complete co-op specification for every version of the original. Do not turn forum anecdotes into a promise that a particular activity will always have a full group. If you select the first game for its story or modes, confirm the current platform support and the edition’s included content separately from the question of who is online.
For a group starting together, agree on the starting title before anyone buys downloadable content. The original’s expansion modes belong to its own game, while The Division 2 add-ons such as Warlords of New York and Battle for Brooklyn are listed separately. A shared story plan avoids a situation in which one player owns a mode that the others cannot enter.
What do the main editions actually include?
Edition names are a bigger buying hazard than the game titles. Ubisoft lists The Division 2’s Warlords of New York and Battle for Brooklyn separately, and the upcoming Echoes of Central Park has its own November 3, 2026 date. The original’s 2026 Definitive Edition is a bundle of the existing game, three Season Pass expansions and cosmetics, not a newly written sequel.

| Game or package | What the published description establishes | What to verify before purchase |
|---|---|---|
| The Division 2 standard game | Ubisoft’s US listing dates it March 15, 2019 and describes the campaign and continuing game. | Whether the listing includes Warlords of New York, Battle for Brooklyn or another add-on. |
| Echoes of Central Park | Scheduled for November 3, 2026; an announced Level 40 boost is associated with the content. | Final launch status, platform availability and the exact bundle in your territory. |
| The Division base game | Original storefront dated March 8, 2016. | Whether a physical or digital listing is the base game only or includes a Season Pass. |
| The Division Definitive Edition | Original game plus Underground, Survival, Last Stand and cosmetic packs; storefront dated February 3, 2026. | That “Definitive” refers to a bundle of existing content, and that your platform and territory show the same contents. |
Do not assume that an older base-game disc contains every later expansion. Likewise, do not treat a temporary anniversary promotion for Warlords of New York as a permanent free entitlement; that promotion belonged to an earlier anniversary period.
Should you buy a physical disc or a digital edition?
A physical copy can be sensible if you already own a compatible disc console, but the disc is not a shortcut around edition or platform checks. Ubisoft documents installation of The Division 2 from a PS4 disc. Before ordering a physical copy, confirm the console’s disc drive, the disc’s region, the exact edition printed on the case and which downloadable content is sold separately.
The PS4 disc for the original The Division is another possible physical route, but availability information is less authoritative than Ubisoft’s own edition listings and can vary by retailer and territory. Treat it as a format choice rather than proof of current stock or a complete DLC package.
Neither physical-disc guidance establishes offline access. These games’ content, updates and add-ons can have separate connectivity or account requirements, so read the platform listing before assuming that installing from a disc makes every mode playable without an internet connection.
If you prefer lore beyond the games, Ubisoft identifies The World of Tom Clancy’s The Division from Dark Horse Comics as a physical companion. It is optional background material, not a substitute for either game’s campaign.

Which choice fits your priority?
| Your priority | Better starting point | Reason and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Ongoing events, newly announced content and an expanding endgame | The Division 2 | Red Moon Rising was live in October and Central Park content was scheduled; the scheduled date is not proof of a launch before November 3. |
| Start with the original outbreak story in New York | The Division | It is the earlier game, and the Definitive Edition packages its major classic expansions. |
| Play with friends on different systems immediately | Neither as a guaranteed crossplay purchase | The Division 2 rollout was planned for after November 3 and the original has no cross-platform support. |
| Use a straightforward physical purchase | The Division 2 PS4 disc, if your console accepts it | Ubisoft documents PS4 disc installation; check region, edition, DLC and connectivity independently. |
| Explore Underground, Survival and Last Stand | The Division Definitive Edition | Those three expansions are listed as included; verify that the storefront in your territory shows the same bundle. |
How should a new group decide before buying?
Use the following order so that a platform misunderstanding does not determine the purchase accidentally.
- Set the shared priority. Decide whether the group wants the original New York story or current Division 2 content. If players want different things, the games are separate purchases rather than two editions of one campaign.
- Inventory platforms. Record each person’s console or PC service. A PC cross-progression document does not promise cross-platform multiplayer, and the original has no crossplay according to Ubisoft Help.
- Check the date. On October 29, 2026, Division 2 crossplay was still a future rollout tied to the post-November 3 period. Recheck the live status if your group buys after launch.
- Match editions. Compare the exact contents of Warlords of New York, Battle for Brooklyn, Echoes of Central Park and the original Definitive Edition. Do not infer DLC ownership from a base-game disc.
- Choose format. For a physical copy, verify a compatible disc console and region. For digital purchases, confirm the account and store listing that will hold the entitlement.
- Keep expectations realistic. Neither title has a reliable public, all-platform population comparison in the available official material. Plan around the modes your group actually wants rather than an unverified activity claim.
What should you verify on the store page?
- The exact platform and region, especially for a PS4 disc or a console without backward-compatibility certainty.
- The edition name and a complete list of included expansions, cosmetics and boosts.
- Whether an item is a scheduled release, a current entitlement or a time-limited promotion.
- Any account-linking conditions for PC cross-progression among Epic, Luna, Ubisoft Connect PC and Steam.
- Whether your friends’ platforms are covered by a crossplay feature that is live now, rather than announced for a later rollout.
- Any network or account requirement that would prevent a disc installation from providing the offline experience you expected.
How the recommendation was selected
The ranking uses the factors that materially change a new player’s experience:
- Setting and story order, particularly the original game’s post-outbreak New York context.
- Evidence of ongoing developer support, live events and announced future content.
- Documented campaign, endgame and co-op scope.
- Actual crossplay and cross-progression status as of October 29, 2026.
- Edition contents, expansion bundling and the difference between a base game and a later package.
- Practical physical-versus-digital considerations for the platform and territory.
Atmosphere preferences and player comments can help explain why someone favors snowy New York, but they are opinions rather than a universal quality measurement.

Can I play The Division 2 without knowing the first game’s story?
Yes. The Division 2 has its own campaign and endgame, so a new player can begin there without treating the first game as a required purchase. Start with the original only when experiencing the earlier New York chapter is itself part of your goal.
Will Division 2 crossplay definitely work on November 3, 2026?
Ubisoft announced a rollout after the Central Park launch, with gradual availability during November and full availability planned by Season 4. That wording does not guarantee day-one access for every platform, so check the live social features and current support notes before coordinating a purchase.
Is The Division Definitive Edition a remaster or a new sequel?
No. Ubisoft describes it as the original game packaged with Underground, Survival, Last Stand and cosmetic content. Its February 3, 2026 storefront date identifies the package, not a newly written follow-up.
Does the original game’s publisher mention 4K and 60 FPS for every console?
No. The publisher page mentions 4K/60 FPS, but that specification should not be generalized to every console configuration. Confirm the exact resolution and frame-rate support for the hardware and edition you plan to use.
