The group’s controlled order is unsettled when Chase Collins arrives at school. Chase’s family history is linked to the fifth line, a family that was cast out or believed to have disappeared. That setup creates the film’s conflict while leaving the later explanation of Chase’s motives and the consequences of the family feud for the movie itself.
The premise therefore has two layers. On the surface, this is a school story about friendships, romance, status and a new arrival. Underneath, it is a story about inherited responsibility. Reid Garwin — Toby Hemingway
Reid is one of the four central heirs, alongside Caleb, Pogue and Tyler. The film presents him as part of a tightly linked group rather than as a separate hero with an unrelated plot. His role matters because every member of the quartet has a stake in whether the covenant remains intact.

What are the witch families in The Covenant?

The covenant is a promise of silence. According to the film’s backstory, the fifth family became associated with John Putnam, who was exposed as a witch and burned at the stake. Calling the characters “witches” is convenient shorthand, but the film’s structure is specifically about inherited supernatural abilities and family allegiance. The four boys are descendants carrying a legacy, not interchangeable spell-casters who happen to attend the same school.
The number five is important to the setup, but it should not be read as five equal members of one club. Four lines remain inside the covenant; the fifth is the absent, excluded or lost line whose history returns through Chase. That imbalance is the source of the film’s unease.

The surviving families are therefore both a bloodline idea and a social structure. They determine who knows the secret, who is expected to protect it and which relationships are treated as risky. The boys’ school lives continually bring those private obligations into contact with people who do not share the family history.
The fifth family
The fifth family is the missing piece in the established order. It was cast out or thought to have been eliminated, and its return to the conversation threatens the silence maintained by the other four. The film deliberately withholds the complete explanation of that family’s fate until the story develops.

Is Chase Collins part of the Sons of Ipswich?
No. Chase Collins is not one of the four established Sons of Ipswich. Sebastian Stan’s character is a new student whose family history connects him to the excluded or lost fifth line, making his arrival the central disruption to the group’s inherited order.
That distinction is important when reading the cast list. Caleb, Pogue, Reid and Tyler begin as members of a known four-family arrangement; Chase arrives from outside it. Explaining more about what he wants, how his connection works or what follows would spoil the film’s later revelations.
Chase’s function is consequently larger than “the new boy.” His arrival forces the established group to confront a part of its history that has been defined as absent. Aaron Abbot — Kyle Schmid
