Battlefield 6 has already released, so “while you wait” is best read as looking for an alternative between Battlefield sessions—or a different kind of military shooter altogether. For big team battles and vehicles, start with Squad; for close infantry fights, try Insurgency: Sandstorm; for World War II combat, choose Hell Let Loose; and for a player-shaped sandbox, consider Arma Reforger.
Choose by the kind of Battlefield experience you want
Battlefield’s appeal can mean large combined-arms battles, infantry-focused fights, or the freedom to approach an objective in different ways. The games below lean toward different parts of that mix. Treat these as preference-based recommendations, not a controlled or hands-on ranking.
| What you want | Game | What it offers | What changes from Battlefield |
|---|---|---|---|
| Large team battles and vehicles | Squad | Large conflicts and vehicles including trucks, artillery, boats, and helicopters; PC is listed. | A milsim with a more demanding pace and adjustment curve than arcade-style Battlefield. |
| Close infantry fights, PvP or co-op | Insurgency: Sandstorm | Tight infantry engagements, versus and co-op modes; PC, PS4/PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S are listed. | Much less vehicle-focused; the comparison guide notes technicals rather than a broad combined-arms roster. |
| Large battles in a historical setting | Hell Let Loose | World War II battles with tanks, artillery, numerous roles, and European and North African theatres; PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S are listed. | Its role knowledge and teamwork demands make it a more hardcore choice. |
| Scenarios, mods, and player freedom | Arma Reforger | Conflict multiplayer, Game Master scenario creation, and modding through Workbench; PC, Xbox, and PS5 are listed. | Its sandbox tools offer a player-driven experience rather than only quick, tightly structured matches. |
| Campaign plus multiplayer and co-op | Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II | Activision lists a global campaign, multiplayer, and Special Ops. | The official product page does not establish current matchmaking health, price, or support status. |
| Military vehicles above all | War Thunder | Vehicle combat featuring aircraft, destroyers, and tanks. | It has no infantry combat, and progression or spending may be a consideration. |
| Logistics and a persistent frontline | Foxhole | Players produce and transport equipment as well as fight on the frontline. | Its isometric perspective makes it a change of genre, not a first-person Battlefield substitute. |
Best for large combined-arms battles: Squad
Squad is the closest fit here if your priority is large team conflicts supported by vehicles. Its roster spans trucks, artillery, boats, and helicopters, but its milsim approach means communication, coordination, and a slower, more deliberate rhythm matter more than they do in an arcade-style match. It is listed for PC.
Pick it when working with a team and fighting over broad objectives sounds appealing. If you mainly want fast infantry action or a relaxed drop-in match, one of the more focused options below may suit you better. GamesRadar+ includes Squad in its military-games comparison.

Best for close infantry firefights: Insurgency: Sandstorm
Insurgency: Sandstorm puts the emphasis on tight infantry engagements and supports both versus and co-op play. It is listed for PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox One and Series X/S, making it one of the broader platform choices in this group.
The trade-off is scale: this is not the pick for a Battlefield-style mix of infantry, aircraft, and armor. The comparison guide describes its vehicles as limited to technicals. Choose it when you want the fight itself to center on infantry rather than combined arms. GamesRadar+’s guide covers its modes and platform listings.

Consider a different kind of military game
War Thunder: focus on vehicles
War Thunder is the option when tanks, aircraft, and naval vessels matter more than infantry. The comparison guide highlights fighter aircraft, destroyers, and tanks. It is not an infantry shooter, and the guide flags progression or spending as factors to consider.
Foxhole: contribute to the war effort
Foxhole combines frontline fighting with player-run production and transport of equipment. It offers a logistics-focused way to participate in a war, but its isometric perspective is a substantial departure from first-person Battlefield combat.
GamesRadar+’s comparison guide discusses both games’ distinctive focus.
