If you have already played the obvious new action releases, the next game should match the kind of melee you want—not a supposed universal winner. Phantom Blade Zero is the strongest current choice for weapon variety and technical expression. Choose CONTROL Resonant for combo-heavy buildcraft, DOOM: The Dark Ages for ferocious melee inside an FPS, Half Sword for mouse-driven physical precision, and Only One for a compact arena loop. The upcoming Fable, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, and Mudang: Two Hearts are worth tracking, but they are not current-play recommendations.

DOOM: The Dark Ages Aggressive melee in a first-person shooter Released May 15, 2025; devastating melee abilities combined with classic strafing Not stated Nov 2026
Half Sword Physical precision and simulation-minded swordplay Early Access began Jan. 30, 2026; mouse-controlled medieval sword fighting with physics-oriented systems PC Nov 2026
Only One A compact, replayable arena challenge Released Aug. 25, 2026; defend a sacrificial pillar while pushing back enemy waves Not stated Nov 2026

The table separates games that are available now from the future projects below. “Not stated” means the cited announcement did not establish a platform, rather than that the game has no confirmed platform.

How should you choose a melee action game after the latest releases?

Start with the combat fantasy you want to repeat for dozens of hours. The most useful distinctions are technical mastery, expressive build variety, combat tempo, how central melee is to the whole design, and how much unfinished or niche scope you will accept.

  • Technical mastery: Look for timing, precision, counters and deliberate weapon control. Phantom Blade Zero and Half Sword sit furthest toward this end, although they deliver very different kinds of precision.
  • Expression and build variety: If you would rather combine forms, powers and loadouts than perfect one weapon, CONTROL Resonant is the clearest fit.
  • Combat tempo: DOOM: The Dark Ages favors forward momentum and crowd clearing. Only One compresses that idea into repeated arena waves.
  • Melee centrality: Half Sword and Only One make the blade the entire premise. DOOM uses melee as a major pillar while retaining firearms and movement, and Mudang: Two Hearts will blend close-quarters combat with stealth, gadgets and guns.
  • Accessibility: Phantom Blade Zero offers difficulty options that range from story-friendly play to demanding modes, so you can pursue its weapon systems without committing to the harshest execution requirements.
  • Availability: Released games give you a finished commercial product, Half Sword is still in Early Access, and the Fable, Onimusha and Mudang entries are announcements for later.

Which released games have the best melee combat right now?

1. Phantom Blade Zero — best for weapon variety and technical expression

Phantom Blade Zero is the most direct answer to “what action game has the best sword combat?” when your priority is a large, weapon-driven moveset. PlayStation’s official coverage lists more than 30 main weapons and 25 secondary weapons, along with weapon pairing and upgradeable loadouts. That breadth makes the game a natural next step for players who have exhausted the familiar recent releases and want their build to change how they approach encounters.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The important distinction is that this is not merely a game with many cosmetic blades. The official description presents weapon choice, paired equipment and loadout upgrades as the center of combat preparation. You can also select from several difficulty options, including a story-friendly path and more demanding modes. That gives newcomers room to learn the systems while leaving an execution-heavy route for players seeking stricter timing.

Its limitation is evidentiary rather than mechanical: the published material establishes the arsenal, customization and release status, but it does not establish that every weapon is equally deep or that a long-term balance consensus exists. Treat it as the strongest recommendation for variety and technical ambition, not as proof of a universal winner.

2. CONTROL Resonant — best for combo-heavy buildcraft

CONTROL Resonant takes a different route. Instead of asking you to master one ideal sword, it builds a melee action-RPG around the shapeshifting Aberrant weapon. Official coverage describes hammer, short-blade, scythe and whip forms, plus air-juggling, a combo meter, executions and encounters that demand crowd management.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That combination creates a combat language you can assemble. A heavy form can answer a durable target, a short blade can support faster strings, and aerial play or executions can change how you manage groups. Supporting powers and build choices matter because the game is designed around switching approaches rather than treating one moveset as the complete answer.

Choose this when “games with technical swordplay but more build variety” is the search you are really making. It is less about finding a perfect sword and more about building a flexible set of forms and powers. The available official hands-on coverage is positive, but it does not amount to an independent, completed critical consensus, so keep expectations focused on the documented systems.

3. DOOM: The Dark Ages — best for aggressive melee inside an FPS

DOOM: The Dark Ages is for players who want melee to make an action game hit harder without leaving the first-person-shooter format. Xbox’s official Developer Direct coverage describes a Slayer built around devastating melee abilities while preserving classic strafing. The result is a combat identity based on momentum, aggression and close-range force rather than a traditional sword-dueling ruleset.

That distinction matters. Melee is a core pillar of the game’s power fantasy, but it does not replace every other weapon category or turn the campaign into a dedicated character-action game. You are still moving through encounters with the speed and spatial demands associated with DOOM, using close-range attacks to intensify pressure and clear threats.

Pick it if you want satisfying melee combat while keeping the rhythm of an FPS. Avoid it if your ideal game is built around one blade, counter windows and a long list of stance-specific techniques.

4. Half Sword — best for physical precision and simulation-minded swordplay

Half Sword makes the act of controlling a medieval weapon the main challenge. Its mouse-controlled swordplay and physics-oriented systems aim for physical precision rather than cinematic combo flow. Small changes in input, distance and blade position matter more here than memorizing a polished sequence of character animations.

This is the specialist option for PC players who want the feeling of manipulating a weapon, not simply selecting an attack command. The trade-off is scope and certainty: Early Access began on Jan. 30, 2026, so the game is incomplete and can change substantially as development continues. Systems, balance and content should be treated as works in progress.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Half Sword is therefore a strong recommendation for simulation-minded players who welcome iteration, but a poor choice if you need a finished, story-led action game with a settled progression structure.

5. Only One — best for a compact arena swordplay loop

Only One strips the format down to a focused premise: fight in an arena, protect a sacrificial pillar and push back successive enemy waves. Its appeal is immediate repetition rather than a large cinematic campaign. Each run concentrates on movement, spacing and the satisfaction of surviving the next pressure spike.

That makes it a useful alternative when you want a replayable melee challenge that starts quickly. It is not a replacement for a major story-driven action game, and its narrower scope is the point. Choose it for short, concentrated sessions and a clear combat loop, not for extensive weapon progression or a sprawling world.

What is the difference between technical swordplay, combo combat and crowd-clearing melee?

These games can all feel “melee-focused,” but they ask different skills from the player. Technical swordplay rewards controlled inputs and timing; combo combat rewards switching tools and extending a sequence; crowd-clearing melee rewards positioning and maintaining pressure across several threats.

Combat priority Best match What you are practicing
Weapon mastery and loadout decisions Phantom Blade Zero Choosing and upgrading complementary weapons, then adapting to difficulty
Expressive strings and build experimentation CONTROL Resonant Switching Aberrant forms, juggling targets and managing executions
Momentum against groups DOOM: The Dark Ages Closing distance, using melee power and preserving movement through crowds
Physical blade control Half Sword Mouse precision, positioning and physics-aware attacks
Short-session survival Only One Holding space around the pillar while dealing with escalating waves

Which of these games are finished, in Early Access or still upcoming?

The five ranked recommendations are available in different states. Phantom Blade Zero, CONTROL Resonant, DOOM: The Dark Ages and Only One are released games. Half Sword is playable in Early Access, which means its design and content are not final. That distinction is especially important for anyone buying primarily for a complete campaign or stable balance.

The remaining three games belong on a watchlist rather than a current-play list. Their announced windows and systems are useful for choosing what to follow, but they should not be described as available as of November 2026.

Which upcoming melee action games should you watch?

Fable — style-weaving across melee, ranged weapons and magic

Fable is scheduled for Feb. 23, 2027. Its defining combat idea is “style-weaving,” which lets strength, skill and will flow together instead of forcing you into one combat category. William Kennedy, Associate Game Director at Playground Games, describes it this way: “Style-weaving allows you to seamlessly combine strength, skill and will.”

For melee fans, the attraction is flexibility rather than pure sword specialization. You can move between close attacks, ranged weapons and magic as part of one combat approach. That makes Fable the watchlist choice for players who want a broad action-RPG toolkit and do not require melee to dominate every encounter.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword — deliberate samurai counterattacks

Capcom has announced Onimusha: Way of the Sword for PlayStation 5 in 2026. The announcement emphasizes swordplay and the series’ Issen counterattack tradition, making it the clearest future option for deliberate samurai timing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No precise launch date is established in the announcement, so treat the year as a window rather than a reservation you can schedule around. Its appeal is the promise of reading attacks and answering with a well-timed counter, not the broad build experimentation offered by CONTROL Resonant.

Mudang: Two Hearts — grounded close-quarters combat with stealth

Mudang: Two Hearts is announced for 2026 on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC. Its combat mix includes stealth, close-quarters fighting, environmental takedowns, lethal and nonlethal options, gadgets and firearms.

This is the watchlist entry for players searching for grounded CQC rather than a pure character-action game. Encounters should be understood as tactical problems: decide whether to avoid a guard, use the environment, choose a lethal or nonlethal approach, or escalate with equipment and guns.

How do you decide what to play next?

  1. Define the desired feel. Pick technical weapon control, expressive combo building, FPS momentum, simulation precision or an arena loop before looking at platform or release date.
  2. Set your tolerance for complexity. Phantom Blade Zero and CONTROL Resonant ask you to engage with weapons or forms; DOOM offers a more immediate power fantasy; Only One keeps the rules compact.
  3. Check completion status. Choose a released title if you want a settled package. Choose Half Sword only if Early Access iteration is acceptable, and keep the three announced games on a watchlist.
  4. Match the melee role to your expectations. If you want melee to be the entire game, start with Half Sword or Only One. If you want melee integrated with another format, DOOM or the future Mudang may fit better.
  5. Use difficulty as a filter. Phantom Blade Zero explicitly supports a range from story-friendly play to demanding modes; for the other games, the available material does not establish equivalent difficulty options.

How were these recommendations selected?

The ranking uses the combat distinctions most relevant to players who have already finished recent action releases: weapon and loadout breadth, combo and build expression, tempo, melee centrality, accessibility information and availability. It does not rely on personal testing, benchmark scores or an invented critical ranking. Released dates, weapon counts and announced windows are attributed to the official PlayStation, Xbox, publisher or storefront descriptions identified for each game.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Phantom Blade Zero available on PS5 now?

Yes. The game’s listed release date has passed, so it is a current PlayStation 5 recommendation as of November 2026. The available official information confirms the platform and weapon systems, but it does not establish separate edition details or retailer stock.

Is Half Sword a finished game?

No. It remains in Early Access, so content, balance and physics can change as development continues. Buy it for the current precision-swordplay concept rather than an assurance of a final campaign or feature set.

Does DOOM: The Dark Ages work for someone who wants mostly melee?

It can, provided you also want first-person movement and the series’ broader weapon ecosystem. Its melee abilities are central to the Slayer’s power, but the game is designed around aggression and strafing rather than replacing ranged combat with formal sword duels.

When will Onimusha: Way of the Sword launch?

Capcom has announced a 2026 release for PlayStation 5, but the cited announcement does not provide a day or month. Any exact date or pre-order timing should therefore be treated as unconfirmed until Capcom publishes it.
