For more space to install and play PS5 games, choose a compatible PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe SSD with effective cooling. The WD_BLACK SN850P is the simplest documented fit because Sony lists it as officially licensed and it comes with an integrated heatsink; the Samsung 990 PRO with Heatsink and Corsair MP600 PRO LPX 2TB are manufacturer-described alternatives. These are specification-based options, not hands-on rankings. PS5 Prism is a collection of cosmetic accessories, not a new console or storage standard, so Prism does not change which SSD your PS5 accepts.

Name Best for Key spec Platforms Checked
WD_BLACK SN850P with heatsink Simple, officially licensed PS5 fit 1TB–4TB: up to 7,300MB/s sequential read; 8TB: up to 7,200MB/s PS5 Oct 2026
Samsung 990 PRO with Heatsink A maker-described PS5-compatible option Up to 7,450MB/s sequential read; US listing offers 1TB, 2TB and 4TB PS5 Oct 2026
Corsair MP600 PRO LPX 2TB A clearly identified 2TB pre-cooled option Up to 7,100MB/s sequential read; M.2 2280 PS5 and PS5 Pro Oct 2026

What does PS5 Prism change about storage?

Nothing about the PS5’s M.2 requirements. Sony’s Prism Collection announcement describes transparent DualSense controllers and console covers in Flare Orange, Emerald Green and Graphite Gray; it does not announce a new console, SSD type or storage capacity. The announcement was published October 28, 2026, and said preorders would start November 10, 2026, with launch beginning February 4, 2027—both dates were still in the future on October 30, 2026. That distinction matters because a decorative cover does not expand storage or make a different SSD compatible. Your console’s available game space and expansion options depend on its hardware and software, not its cover color. If you are considering a Prism cover, check the eventual product listing against your console’s CFI model number; the October announcement did not identify which chassis each forthcoming cover fits. Sony says the CFI number is on the console’s underside. That cover-fit uncertainty does not change the SSD criteria below.

So, if the question is “Do I need a special SSD for PS5 Prism?”, the answer is no. Choose for the PS5 console you own and verify that the SSD and its cooling assembly meet Sony’s published M.2 requirements.

Which M.2 SSDs are sensible PS5 choices?

The three options below have specific manufacturer or Sony support behind them. Their order reflects the clarity of the documented fit and the use case, not a claim that one delivers faster game loading than another.

1. WD_BLACK SN850P with heatsink: simplest documented fit

Sony lists the SN850P among its officially licensed storage accessories, and the drive’s heatsink is integrated, so there is no need to match a bare SSD with a separate cooling part. Sony’s licensed accessories page identifies the model. Sandisk’s December 2025 data sheet lists heatsink-equipped 1TB, 2TB, 4TB and 8TB variants. It specifies sequential reads up to 7,300MB/s for the 1TB–4TB versions and up to 7,200MB/s for the 8TB version. The listed heatsink dimensions are 80 × 24.46 × 9.89mm. These are Sandisk specifications, not measured PS5 results.

The 2TB variant’s data-sheet identifier is WDBBYV0020BNC-WRSN. Check the precise capacity and product identifier before ordering: model families can contain different versions, and the capacity you select determines how much additional library space you buy. Sony’s licensing is a useful compatibility signal, but still confirm that the product you are buying is the heatsink-equipped variant.

2. Samsung 990 PRO with Heatsink: another maker-described compatible drive

Samsung describes its PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 990 PRO with Heatsink as PS5 compatible and lists sequential read speeds up to 7,450MB/s. Its US product listing offers 1TB, 2TB and 4TB options. Samsung’s 990 PRO with Heatsink listing

Keep “with Heatsink” in the product name when comparing or shopping. The model name also appears without that cooling assembly, and a bare drive needs an appropriate heatsink that fits Sony’s size limits. Do not assume one capacity’s physical measurements apply to every capacity or SKU; verify the exact variant. Samsung’s up-to speed is a vendor specification, not evidence of better in-game performance than another qualifying SSD.

3. Corsair MP600 PRO LPX 2TB: pre-cooled, clearly identified capacity

Corsair identifies the MP600 PRO LPX 2TB, SKU CSSD-F2000GBMP600PLP, as compatible with PS5 and PS5 Pro. It is an M.2 2280 drive with a preinstalled low-profile aluminum heat spreader, and Corsair lists sequential reads up to 7,100MB/s. Corsair’s MP600 PRO LPX 2TB listing

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Corsair’s product text is inconsistent about the family’s upper capacity: it refers both to expansion up to 4TB and to an 8TB option. This recommendation is therefore limited to the clearly identified 2TB variant rather than extending the claim to an uncertain capacity. The listed speed is Corsair’s specification, not a PS5 benchmark.

How to compare the three

All three have maker or Sony documentation supporting a PS5-oriented fit, but the evidence differs: Sony identifies the SN850P as officially licensed, while Samsung and Corsair describe their cited models as compatible. That distinction is not a performance ranking. Before choosing, check the exact capacity and SKU, whether the heatsink is included, total assembled dimensions, warranty terms, and a current price per capacity. A licensed label or a maker’s compatibility statement does not make it sensible to skip Sony’s published fit rules.

There is no supported basis here for naming a budget winner or claiming one drive beats another in real PS5 loading times. The supplied manufacturer speed figures are not comparable, independent head-to-head console measurements, and no current prices were established. A higher sequential-read number alone does not show that a game will load faster.

What specifications must an M.2 SSD meet?

Sony supports M.2 NVMe drives that meet its interface, capacity, size and cooling requirements. The measurements below describe the complete assembly—including the heatsink or other cooling structure—not just the SSD circuit board. Sony’s M.2 installation and compatibility guidance was accessed in 2026; Sony does not give that support page a publication year.

Compatibility checklist

  • Interface: PCI-Express Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe, Socket 3 (Key M). M.2 SATA SSDs are not supported.
  • Capacity: 250GB to 8TB.
  • Supported lengths: 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110.
  • Maximum assembled width: 25mm.
  • Maximum assembled thickness: 11.25mm overall, with no more than 8.0mm above and 2.45mm below the circuit board.
  • Cooling: effective heat dissipation is required. A bare drive plus an aftermarket heatsink must fit the limits as one assembly.
  • Read speed: Sony recommends sequential reads of 5,500MB/s or faster. This is a recommendation, not a guarantee of identical performance to the console’s built-in storage.
  • Board layout: Sony supports single-sided and double-sided devices.

“M.2” by itself is not enough to establish compatibility: it describes a physical form factor used by different kinds of drives. An M.2 SATA drive, for example, is not equivalent to the PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe drive Sony specifies. A listing that says “for PS5” is a useful starting point, but check the exact interface, capacity, length and assembled dimensions.

Nor does meeting the published numbers guarantee every third-party model will work. Sony explicitly does not guarantee all drives that meet the stated specifications. Treat the checklist as a filter, not a promise that any drive with a sufficiently high read-speed figure will perform exactly like the factory storage.

How much capacity should you buy?

Start with the free space on your own console rather than assuming there is one universally ideal size. Open Settings > Storage to see how much room is available. The SN850P data sheet lists 1TB, 2TB, 4TB and 8TB variants, while the Samsung US listing offers 1TB, 2TB and 4TB options; Sony’s overall M.2 capacity ceiling is 8TB.

  • 1TB: a smaller expansion for someone who wants more room without aiming to keep a particularly large installed collection at once.
  • 2TB: adds substantially more library room than 1TB and is available among the specifically documented options above.
  • 4TB or 8TB: suited to someone who specifically wants a larger concurrently installed collection, subject to the exact model’s availability and compatibility.

Those are use-case distinctions, not a claim that one capacity is right for every player. A larger drive costs more in absolute terms in many retail situations, but no current comparable prices are established here, so check the actual price for the capacity and model you intend to buy. Capacity labels also should not be treated as a promise that every listed gigabyte will appear as free game space after formatting and system use.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Sandisk’s December 2025 SN850P data sheet estimates that its 8TB model can hold up to 200 games, using an average game size of 36GB for the calculation. That is a manufacturer estimate based on a simplifying average, not a guaranteed library size: individual game installations vary, updates require room, and your own collection may be far larger or smaller than that assumed average.

Should you use an internal M.2 or external USB storage?

Use an internal, compatible M.2 when you want added space from which PS5 games can launch. USB extended storage is useful for storing PS5 titles and running PS4 games, but a PS5 game on USB must be copied back to the console or M.2 before you can play it. Sony distinguishes those uses in its storage solutions guide.

Need Internal compatible M.2 External USB extended storage
Store and launch PS5 games Yes Store only; copy back to console or M.2 before play
Store and launch PS4 games Yes Yes
Setup Install a cooled SSD inside the console, then format it Connect and configure compatible USB storage

That makes USB a possible archive for PS5 games, not a direct substitute when the requirement is more space for games you can launch from storage. Sony also treats game installations separately from saved-data and cloud-storage uses; do not assume that cloud saves or a USB game archive replace an internal M.2 expansion.

How do you install and format an M.2 SSD?

Before opening the console, have a compatible SSD with effective cooling, the right Phillips screwdriver, a well-lit work surface and the installation procedure for your PS5 model group. Sony calls for a #1 Phillips or cross-head screwdriver and instructs users to ground themselves before handling the drive. Update the console’s system software first. The process involves opening the chassis and expansion-slot covers; Sony publishes separate illustrated procedures for CFI-1000 and CFI-2000/7000 model groups.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Back up the drive and power down. If the M.2 SSD has existing data, back it up first: first-time PS5 formatting erases the entire M.2 drive. Turn the console off, disconnect it and let it cool before installation. Do not rely on the SSD retaining existing files after setup.
  2. Prepare the workspace and console. Use a well-lit table and a #1 Phillips/cross-head screwdriver. Ground yourself before touching the drive. Follow Sony’s instructions for your console’s CFI model group; cover-removal steps differ between CFI-1000 and CFI-2000/7000 models.
  3. Open the expansion slot. Remove the appropriate console cover and the expansion-slot cover as shown in Sony’s model-specific procedure. Keep the small screws and spacer secure so they can be refitted correctly.
  4. Set the spacer for the drive length. Place the spacer in the position matching the SSD’s supported length. The installation must support the drive at its correct mounting point; do not force a different length into place.
  5. Insert and secure the SSD. Hold the M.2 drive by its edges, insert it into the connector at the angle shown in Sony’s illustrations, lower it into position and secure it with the screw. The installed drive and its cooling structure must fit within the dimensions in the compatibility checklist.
  6. Replace both covers before use. Refit the expansion-slot cover and the console cover. Sony says not to operate the console with its cover removed.
  7. Format when prompted. Start the PS5 and follow the on-screen instructions to format the M.2. Formatting prepares it for console use but erases the drive’s prior contents.
  8. Choose where games install. To set a default destination for new installations, open Settings > Storage > Installation Location. To move an existing game, open Game Library > Options > Move Games and Apps.

Sony says that correctly following its instructions with a qualifying drive generally should not affect the manufacturer warranty. Damage caused by improper installation may not be covered. If the steps or cover fit differ from what you see, stop and use the official procedure for your exact console model rather than forcing a component or relying on instructions for another chassis.

What should you verify before buying?

Run through these checks on the precise product listing, not just the product family name:

  • Exact model and capacity: confirm the SKU or identifier and the size you want. Similar names can refer to different variants.
  • Cooling included: confirm whether the listing is for a heatsink-equipped drive or a bare drive. Do not stack a second heatsink on a model that already has integrated cooling.
  • Dimensions as installed: check that the SSD and cooling structure together meet Sony’s width and thickness limits. A bare drive’s dimensions do not establish that a separately added heatsink will fit.
  • Interface and length: confirm Gen4x4 NVMe, Key M, and one of Sony’s supported lengths. Do not infer this from “M.2” alone.
  • Warranty and return terms: review the seller’s terms for the exact model and region. The compatibility of a drive and the seller’s return policy are separate considerations.
  • Current price per capacity: compare live prices for the same capacity and cooling configuration. No current price comparison is established in this guide.

These checks help avoid the main mismatch: buying a drive that looks right by capacity or headline speed but lacks the required interface, is too large once cooled, or is a different variant from the one described as compatible.

How we selected these options

The shortlist uses the evidence available for exact models: Sony’s licensed-accessory identification for the SN850P, manufacturer statements of PS5 compatibility for the Samsung 990 PRO with Heatsink and Corsair MP600 PRO LPX 2TB, and published capacity, cooling or speed specifications where available. It does not rank the drives by hands-on testing, game load times or price. The Corsair recommendation stays with its clearly identified 2TB variant because its product text gives conflicting upper-capacity information.

The practical recommendation is straightforward: choose a cooling-equipped, properly sized Gen4x4 NVMe M.2 drive that meets Sony’s limits, then select the capacity that suits your installed library. The SN850P has the clearest Sony-licensed fit among these examples; the other two are documented alternatives, not proven performance upgrades. Prism changes the look of selected accessories, not this storage decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does an M.2 SSD replace the PS5’s built-in storage?

No. It adds a separate storage location for games; it does not remove or replace the console’s factory storage. You can choose an installation location for new games and move existing games between supported storage locations.

Will installing an M.2 SSD erase the PS5’s built-in games?

Formatting the new M.2 erases data on that M.2 drive, not the console’s built-in storage. Back up any files already on the SSD before using it in the PS5.

Can I keep saved games on an M.2 expansion drive?

Sony distinguishes game installations from saved-data and cloud-storage uses. Treat the M.2 as game storage; do not assume that adding it changes where saved data is managed.
