The best e-reader for most people in 2026 is the Kindle Paperwhite (12th Generation), but only if Kindle is the ecosystem you want to use. For colour, page buttons and Kobo’s documented library and format options, choose the Kobo Libra Colour instead.

The Kindle Paperwhite (12th Generation, 2024) is the best e-reader for most people in 2026—provided you already buy Kindle books or want to use Amazon’s reading ecosystem. Its 7-inch 300ppi monochrome screen, adjustable warm light, USB-C charging, IPX8 water resistance and 16GB of storage make it an unusually well-balanced reader for novels, travel and reading near water.

It is not the automatic choice for everyone. Buy the Kobo Libra Colour if colour covers, illustrated books, physical page-turn buttons, compatible library borrowing or wider native file support matter more. Choose the Kobo Clara BW for a smaller monochrome Kobo. The Kindle Scribe Colorsoft is a specialist 11-inch reading-and-writing device, not the best default e-reader.

What you need Best e-reader Why Know before buying
Kindle books, novels, travel and poolside reading Kindle Paperwhite (12th Gen) 7-inch 300ppi screen, warm light, IPX8 rating, USB-C and 16GB. It is monochrome and has no physical page buttons.
Colour, illustrations, coloured highlights or page buttons Kobo Libra Colour 7-inch colour E Ink screen, buttons, 32GB, IPX8 and optional pen support. Colour is 150ppi; black-and-white content is 300ppi. The optional stylus costs extra.
A compact Kobo for text-first reading Kobo Clara BW 6-inch Carta 1300 monochrome display, 16GB, warm light and waterproofing. No colour, handwriting features or page buttons.
Large PDFs and handwritten notes Kindle Scribe Colorsoft 11-inch colour e-paper screen and included pen. It is expensive, not meaningfully waterproof, and less convenient for annotation than a conventional small e-reader is for reading.

Best overall: Kindle Paperwhite (12th Generation)

For a reader whose library is in Kindle, the Paperwhite is the most sensible all-round purchase. Amazon identifies the 2024 model as a touchscreen e-reader with a 7-inch Carta 1300 E Ink display at 300ppi, adjustable warm light, Dark Mode, USB-C, Bluetooth VoiceView, IPX8 water resistance and 16GB of storage. About 11.5GB is available for your own content.

The 7-inch size is the sweet spot for many readers: appreciably roomier than a 6-inch device without becoming a notebook-sized object. It is especially well suited to text-heavy books, where a monochrome 300ppi E Ink panel is more valuable than a colour screen.

Amazon advertises battery life of up to 12 weeks. Treat that as a manufacturer maximum rather than a promise for every reading pattern; front-light use, wireless activity and reading time affect results.

Best alternative: Kobo Libra Colour

The Kobo Libra Colour is the better fit when the features around reading matter as much as the text itself. It has a 7-inch Kaleido 3 colour E Ink display, physical page-turn buttons, rotation and landscape support, 32GB storage, USB-C, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, adjustable ComfortLight PRO and IPX8 water resistance. Kobo lists it at 199.5g.

Its colour display is useful for book covers, illustrations, comics and coloured highlights. But it is a category trade-off, not a tablet-like colour upgrade: Kobo specifies 300ppi for black-and-white content and 150ppi for colour. Readers who mostly read novels should decide whether those colour uses justify paying for a feature they may rarely use.

The Libra Colour also supports the optional Kobo Stylus 2 for handwriting and annotation. It is compatible, not included. Buy the pen only if you genuinely expect to write on books or notebooks; it is an easy accessory to overbuy for a reading-first device. A Libra Colour SleepCover is likewise optional and model-specific.

Library and file-format advantages—check the fine print

Kobo says the Libra Colour can borrow e-books directly through OverDrive and Libby, but this is limited to select countries and availability varies by library. Confirm both your country and your local library’s service before making this the deciding reason to buy.

Its official US store price was listed as $259.99 at research time; Kobo Stylus 2 was listed at $69.99 and the SleepCover at $39.99. Treat all three as historical store figures, not current prices—regional pricing, promotions and bundles change.

Best small Kobo: Kobo Clara BW

The Kobo Clara BW is for readers who want Kobo’s ecosystem in a lighter, simpler text-first device. It has a 6-inch glare-free Carta 1300 HD monochrome display, 16GB storage, waterproofing, Dark Mode, ComfortLight PRO and Bluetooth audiobook support.

This is the right Kobo choice when portability and ordinary book reading matter more than colour, physical buttons or writing. Its smaller screen can be more convenient in a coat pocket or small bag, while its monochrome panel avoids the colour-resolution compromise.

Kobo claims up to 53 days of battery life under a specific test: 30 minutes of reading per day, front light at 10%, and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth switched off. That figure is useful for comparing the intended use case, but it will not match every reader’s habits. Audiobook availability is also limited to select countries.

Kobo’s US store listed the Clara BW at $159.99 at research time. Check your local Kobo store for today’s price and availability.

For writing and large documents: Kindle Scribe Colorsoft

The Kindle Scribe Colorsoft belongs in a different category from the Paperwhite. Its 11-inch colour e-paper screen and included stylus make sense for a reader who needs to read large PDFs, move documents through cloud services such as OneDrive, and write by hand.

That size and pen do not make it the better everyday e-reader. Independent review coverage reports 300ppi in monochrome and 150ppi in colour, finds the annotation workflow less natural than it should be, and notes the absence of meaningful waterproofing. If most of your reading is novels on a sofa, commute or holiday, a smaller waterproof device is usually the more practical tool.

How to choose without buying the wrong category

  1. Start with where your books already live. An e-reader is most pleasant when it fits the books and borrowing workflow you actually use. Do not assume books bought from one store will move seamlessly to another device family.
  2. Decide whether colour solves a real problem. Colour makes covers, illustrated books, comics and highlights more useful. For mainly black-and-white prose, a monochrome reader remains the straightforward choice.
  3. Choose the screen size for your reading, not the spec sheet. Six inches is compact; seven inches is a versatile middle ground; 11 inches is for documents and writing rather than one-handed novel reading.
  4. Check library support locally. Kobo’s OverDrive/Libby integration is conditional on country and library availability. Verify it before spending more for that workflow.
  5. Only pay for a pen if you will write. The Libra Colour’s pen is optional; the Scribe’s included pen is central to its value. Neither is necessary for ordinary reading.
  6. Verify the exact retail configuration. Before linking or ordering, confirm generation, storage, regional model, current price, stock, any ads/lock-screen arrangement and promotional subscription terms.

What matters less than it seems

Do not choose solely on a headline battery estimate. The Paperwhite’s up-to-12-week claim and Clara BW’s up-to-53-day claim use different manufacturer framing, and real usage varies. Likewise, storage figures are useful but rarely the first constraint for a text-only library; screen type, ecosystem, water resistance, controls and document needs will usually determine whether you enjoy the device.

Verdict

Choose the Kindle Paperwhite (12th Generation) for the best general-purpose reading experience within Kindle’s ecosystem. Choose the Kobo Libra Colour when colour, page buttons, compatible local-library borrowing or Kobo’s documented format support are priorities. The Kobo Clara BW is the compact monochrome Kobo pick, while the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft earns consideration only when large-screen reading and handwriting are central to the job.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best e-reader for most people in 2026?

The Kindle Paperwhite (12th Generation) is the best default for readers who use Kindle books and want a 7-inch monochrome reader with warm light, USB-C and IPX8 water resistance. It is not the best choice if you need colour, page buttons or Kobo-specific library and file workflows.

Should I buy the Kindle Paperwhite or Kobo Libra Colour?

Choose Kobo Libra Colour if colour covers, illustrations, comics, coloured highlights, physical page-turn buttons or optional pen input are important. Its screen is specified at 150ppi for colour and 300ppi for black-and-white content, so it is not a like-for-like upgrade for text-only reading.

Is Kindle Scribe Colorsoft a replacement for a Paperwhite?

No. It is an 11-inch colour reading-and-writing device with an included pen. It makes sense for large PDFs and handwriting, but independent review coverage reports no meaningful waterproofing and an awkward annotation workflow, making it a specialist rather than a default e-reader.

The Bottom Line

Best for most readers: Kindle Paperwhite (12th Generation). Best when colour, buttons or Kobo workflows matter: Kobo Libra Colour.
