What counts as a DRM-free adventure you can keep?
Here, “keep” means owning a downloadable installer rather than merely receiving permission to launch a platform account. GOG’s product boilerplate says “DRM FREE. No activation or online connection required to play,” and its FAQ says the games can be played totally offline. You can download a full installer, store it on another drive, and reinstall without the Galaxy client.

This is different from a console disc or a digital console purchase. A physical disc is an object you retain, but it may still require patches, account checks or a particular console. Likewise, a Steam or Epic copy is tied to that platform’s account and client policies. If the ownership model matters, select the GOG SKU specifically.
How do I buy and archive a DRM-free adventure?
Use these steps whenever a game’s long-term availability matters.
- Open the game’s GOG product page. Confirm the page shows the “DRM FREE” label and lists the operating systems you need.
- Buy the GOG edition, not a similarly named platform bundle. Storefront versions are not interchangeable for DRM purposes.
- Download the offline installer. In your GOG library, choose the offline installers rather than relying only on Galaxy.
- Save every installer and bonus file. Keep a second copy on an external drive or other storage. Include the game version in the folder name.
- Test the archive while you still have a refund window. Disconnect from the internet, install from the saved files and launch the game. This checks that your chosen operating system and hardware are supported; it is not a claim about performance.
- Record compatibility notes. For older releases, note whether the package uses DOSBox or ScummVM and which controller or display settings you prefer.
GOG’s Preservation Program is an additional reason to use this storefront for older adventures. GOG says the program had more than 100 classics at its November 2024 launch and more than 280 classics with over 1,400 documented fixes, patches and tweaks by spring 2026. Its GOG page lists an OpenCritic average of 89 with 96% recommending it, an IGN 9.2/10 and a PC Gamer 90/100. HowLongToBeat lists about 8 hours for the main path, 9.5 with sides and 10.5 for completionist play.
The 1-bit dithered art is an intentional readability and atmosphere choice, not a modern 3D presentation. Buy it if you want to feel like the investigator. Skip it if sparse interfaces, monochrome visuals or puzzles that refuse to confirm every deduction frustrate you.

2. Disco Elysium – The Final Cut — the richest conversation RPG
Disco Elysium is a detective story presented as a role-playing game in which your skills argue with one another. The Final Cut is fully voiced and includes 24 skills, more than 80 clothing items, 14 tools, 60 Thought Cabinet thoughts and political vision quests. 3. Grim Fandango Remastered — the enduring comic noir
Manny Calavera works in the Department of Death, guiding souls through a film-noir-inspired afterlife shaped by Día de Muertos imagery. The remaster adds high-resolution character textures, dynamic lighting, a live-orchestra score and more than two hours of developer commentary. It also runs on Windows, Linux and macOS, making it a strong choice for a mixed-device archive.
IGN gave the remaster 9.3/10, and HowLongToBeat lists 10.5 hours for the main story. The captured GOG listing showed $14.99 list and $2.25 at 85% off. Eurogamer’s Richard Cobbett, quoted on the product page, praises its classic status while warning that some puzzles and an early section can be rough. Buy it for voice, music and setting; expect old-school puzzle logic rather than modern hint systems.
4. Old Skies — the best recent traditional adventure
In Old Skies, Fia Quinn is a ChronoZen agent escorting wealthy travelers through historical periods including Prohibition and 11 September. You solve temporal puzzles, can die and rewind, and move through hand-drawn 1920×1080 environments with a full voice cast and a Thomas Regin score.

Polygon named it the best adventure of 2025, while PC Gamer scored it 87/100 and called it a new adventure classic. The GOG page shows an OpenCritic 80 average with 89% recommending it and a 12-hour main path on HowLongToBeat. Its GOG user score is 4.2/5 from 77 reviews, a more mixed signal than the critic response. Windows, Linux and macOS support makes it a practical modern keeper.
5. The Drifter — compact, voiced pulp
The Drifter follows Mick Carter after he witnesses a murder, drowns, returns and is framed. It combines crunchy pixel art, full voice acting, a dark-synth score and controls that support either point-and-click input or a twin-stick controller.
OpenCritic lists an 86 average and 90% recommending it; HowLongToBeat gives 8.5 hours for the main story. The GOG page shows a 4.7/5 user score from 171 reviews. Captured prices were $19.99 list and $15.99 at 20% off. PC Gamer’s 70/100 review is the important dissent, arguing that the pulp tone undercuts some of the game’s stronger qualities. Choose it for a brisk thriller rather than a sprawling mystery.

6. The Wolf Among Us — a preserved Telltale-style choice story
The Wolf Among Us casts Bigby Wolf as a sheriff investigating crimes among fairy-tale refugees in a contemporary noir setting. Its appeal is authored drama, timed dialogue choices and occasional quick-time events rather than inventory-puzzle depth.
GOG added it to the Preservation Program in February 2026. ComicBook.com reported the preserved, DRM-free Windows 10/11 edition at $14.99 and quoted GOG’s claim that preservation builds are the best version available on a PC platform. This is the clearest “Telltale game you can keep” recommendation in the current catalog.
Do not automatically extend that guarantee to every Telltale or Skybound release. Check the exact GOG product page for any season you are considering; storefront histories for other episodes and bundles have changed.

Which acclaimed 2025–2026 games are not confirmed DRM-free here?
Critical enthusiasm and DRM-free availability are separate questions. The following games were recommended by major lists or polls but did not have a verified GOG DRM-free SKU in the catalog check: Blue Prince, Dispatch, Lost Records: Bloom & Rage, Wanderstop, Of the Devil, Strange Antiquities, The Roottrees Are Dead, The Seance of Blake Manor, Detective Instinct, Foolish Mortals, Loco Motive, Kentucky Route Zero, Pentiment, What Remains of Edith Finch, Outer Wilds, Portal 2, Journey, 1000xResist, Citizen Sleeper 2 and Mixtape.
Dispatch won 51% of Wccftech’s 2025 community poll (80 of 157 votes), and Blue Prince ranked eighth in Adventure Game Hotspot’s 2000–2025 list, but neither result says anything about ownership format. Lost Records has a physical PlayStation 5 listing, which gives you a disc to retain but not a DRM-free PC installer. Check the exact storefront and edition before buying any of these for archival reasons.

There are also genre stretches. GOG’s story-rich catalog includes Baldur’s Gate 3, Cyberpunk 2077, The Witcher 3, Dragon Age: Origins, Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls. They may be excellent DRM-free purchases on GOG, but they are action RPGs, large role-playing games or interactive dramas rather than focused point-and-click adventures. Baldur’s Gate 3, for example, is a 100-plus-hour CRPG; its reported 17,000 ending variations and 173,642 voice files belong in a different buying decision.

How should Linux users choose?
Linux support is explicitly listed for Grim Fandango Remastered, Old Skies and The Drifter, so those are the safest picks for a Linux archive. The GOG listings for Return of the Obra Dinn and Disco Elysium – The Final Cut list Windows and macOS instead. Always read the operating-system line on the product page before purchasing; a DRM-free installer does not imply native support for every platform.
