Data recovery software is useful when a file was recently deleted, a partition disappeared, or a volume became unreadable. It is not a substitute for a backup, and no application can reliably recover data that has been overwritten, securely erased, discarded by SSD TRIM, or lost on a physically failed drive.

Our shortlist separates straightforward undelete tools from utilities designed for damaged filesystems and technical recovery work. For most Windows and Mac users, EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard is the easiest starting point. Stellar Data Recovery is better suited to advanced scans and custom recovery options, while PhotoRec and DMDE Free Edition are the strongest free choices when you can accept a steeper learning curve or less convenient results.

Best data recovery software at a glance

Best for Software Why choose it Main drawback
Best overall EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard Simple workflow, Windows and Mac versions, and support for internal, external and removable storage The free edition has a limited recovery allowance
Advanced users Stellar Data Recovery Quick and deep scans, custom file-type selection, partition recovery and crashed-system recovery Some capabilities, including Linux filesystem and RAID recovery, depend on the edition
Best free file carver PhotoRec Free, open-source and effective when the filesystem is badly damaged or reformatted Normally loses original filenames and folder structure
Simple Windows undelete Recuva Easy wizard and free edition for recently deleted files Not intended as a universal solution for damaged volumes, lost partitions or failing drives
Free large-scale recovery DMDE Free Edition Runs on Windows, macOS and Linux and permits up to 4,000 files from a selected directory per request The interface is technical and recovering many directories can be laborious
Polished interface Disk Drill Good previews, lost-partition search, byte-to-byte backup and recovery-method choices The free edition can scan and preview but normally requires an upgrade to recover files
Windows command line Windows File Recovery Microsoft’s free utility with Regular and Extensive modes Command-line only, with separate source and destination drives required

These recommendations are based on documented features, practical recovery workflows and the failure modes that matter in real cases. They should not be read as a claim that one tool recovers every type of lost data. Recovery results depend heavily on the filesystem, storage medium, time elapsed and whether the device was used after the deletion.

Our top picks

1. EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard: best overall for most people

EaseUS is the most approachable choice when you want to scan a drive without learning partition tables, file signatures or command-line switches. It supports internal and external drives, USB storage, SD cards and formatted media, with versions for Windows and macOS.

#1 Best Overall

  • High-speed Transmission: The hard drive connector is equipped with a USB-C to USB adapter, supporting USB and USB-C port devices. The maximum transmission rates of SATA and IDE interfaces are 5gbps and 133Mbps respectively(based on actual usage).
  • Plug & Play: Universal hard drive adapter does not require additional drivers. On/Off power switch for hard drives protection. It supports drvies with a capacity of maximum 20TB.
  • Wide Compatibility: Compatible with 2.5"/3.5" HDD/SSD, 2.5"/3.5" IDE. Hard drive reader to usb adapters support Windows XP/7/8.1/8/10, Mac OS 10, Linux, Vista etc.

The usual workflow is simple: select the affected drive, run the scan, filter or preview the results, and recover selected files to another drive. That makes it a sensible first attempt for deleted documents, photos and folders on a readable volume.

There is a catch with the free edition: the current comparison data lists a 2 GB recovery allowance. Check the installed version before relying on that figure, because vendor limits and promotions can change. The EaseUS store currently lists the Windows individual product at $69.95 for one month, $99.95 for one year, or $149.95 with lifetime upgrades. Mac pricing is listed separately, so those figures should not be treated as universal pricing.

Choose EaseUS if: you want the least intimidating interface and are recovering ordinary files from a Windows or Mac drive that is still detected.

2. Stellar Data Recovery: best for advanced scanning

Stellar offers more control than a basic undelete wizard. Its features include quick and deep scanning, custom file-type recovery, partition recovery and crashed-system recovery. That makes it a stronger candidate when a normal scan does not show the files or when the volume has been reformatted.

Stellar’s current product range is edition-dependent. RAID recovery and Linux filesystem support are associated with higher-tier products rather than the basic Windows/Mac application. Do not buy the entry-level edition assuming that every feature shown in a comparison applies to it.

Stellar announced updated Windows and Mac releases on January 28, 2026, including macOS Tahoe 26 support. The company also claimed deep scans up to 40% faster than earlier versions. That is a vendor claim, not an independent measurement. The announcement says files larger than 4 GB on NTFS are supported by both regular and deep scans.

Choose Stellar if: you need configurable scans, partition recovery or a more capable interface and are prepared to check which edition includes the required feature.

3. PhotoRec: best free option when filenames no longer matter

PhotoRec is free, open-source and available for Windows, macOS and Linux. It ignores much of the filesystem and searches the storage device for known file signatures. That lets it work in situations where a volume has been reformatted or the filesystem is severely damaged.

Its defining limitation is that file content and file organization are different things. The normal carving workflow usually cannot restore original filenames or folder structure. Recovered files are placed into numbered folders such as recup_dir.1 and recup_dir.2. You will need to sort and identify them afterwards.

If the volume is still readable and the files were simply deleted, the PhotoRec project recommends trying TestDisk first. TestDisk can preserve original names in cases where PhotoRec’s signature-based carving cannot.

The latest stable TestDisk/PhotoRec release listed by the project is version 7.2, released on February 22, 2024.

PhotoRec recovery steps

  1. On Windows, launch photorec_win.exe; use Run as administrator if required.
  2. Select the physical disk containing the lost data.
  3. Select the source partition.
  4. Open File Opt and disable file types you do not need. Narrowing the list reduces irrelevant results.
  5. Choose Other for FAT, NTFS, exFAT and most non-ext filesystems. Choose the ext2/ext3/ext4 option for those Linux filesystems.
  6. Choose Free to scan unallocated space only, or scan the whole partition when the filesystem is corrupted.
  7. Select a destination on a different physical drive.
  8. Review the numbered recovery directories after the scan finishes.

4. Recuva: best for a simple Windows undelete

Recuva is appropriate for recently deleted files on a readable Windows volume. Its wizard-based workflow asks what kind of file you want, where it was located and whether to perform a deeper scan. The official download process uses the labels Run the Recuva installer, YES and Install.

Recuva should not be treated as a general-purpose answer to lost partitions, badly damaged filesystems, complex RAID recovery or a drive that is failing physically. Its strength is convenience in a relatively ordinary Windows undelete case.

Install it before an emergency if possible. Installing any recovery application after deletion on the same drive can overwrite some of the data you are trying to retrieve.

5. DMDE Free Edition: best free choice for technical users

DMDE is more technical than Recuva or EaseUS, but it is unusually useful when you need to examine partitions and recover a substantial amount of data without immediately buying a license. It supports Windows, macOS and Linux.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The free edition allows up to 4,000 files from a selected directory per request. There is no stated limit on the number of requests, but recovering many directories individually can become tedious. The interface and terminology are better suited to someone comfortable with partitions and filesystem structures.

Rank #3

  • Works with hard drives, USB drives, SD cards, memory sticks, and other common storage formats that use FAT or NTFS file systems — making it a single solution for hard drive recovery, USB drive recovery, SD card recovery, and more. Note: a media reader is required for micro SD cards and some mass storage devices.
  • No Installation Required - The Data Recovery Stick runs entirely from the USB drive with no software installation on your computer — helping prevent new data from overwriting the files you're trying to recover. This also makes it ideal for use across multiple computers or in emergency situations where installation isn't practical.
  • Use the Data Recovery Stick on as many computers as often as needed — simply clear the recovered data between uses to free up storage space. Software updates keep the tool compatible with newer systems and devices, backed by 25+ years of data software expertise from Paraben Consumer Software.

Choose DMDE if: the free recovery allowance of commercial applications is too restrictive and you are willing to trade simplicity for control.

6. Disk Drill: best interface and extra safety utilities

Disk Drill supports Windows and macOS and combines Quick Scan, filesystem analysis, lost-partition search and Deep Scan through its All recovery methods workflow. It also provides file previews, recovery-chance indicators and a byte-to-byte backup function for creating a sector-by-sector copy before recovery.

The normal process is:

  1. Select the source drive.
  2. Start the scan.
  3. Open Review Lost Data, or choose Recover All.
  4. Select the files or folders.
  5. Click Recover.
  6. Choose another drive or partition as the destination.

The free edition can scan and preview recoverable data, but ordinary recovery through Quick Scan, Deep Scan and partition-search methods requires the paid edition. Recovery covered by Recovery Vault on Windows or Guaranteed Recovery on macOS is handled differently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Disk Drill’s recovery-chance indicator is only an estimate. A file marked High can still be incomplete or fail to open. A scan of a failing 1 TB drive can also take many hours, particularly when the device is repeatedly returning read errors.

7. Windows File Recovery: best free Microsoft tool

Windows File Recovery is available through the Microsoft Store and uses a command prompt rather than a graphical interface. Its syntax is:

winfr source-drive: destination-drive: [/mode] [/switches]

The source and destination must be different drives. Microsoft creates a destination folder named in the format Recovery_<date and time>.

Open it through Windows key → type “Windows File Recovery” → select Windows File Recovery. Approve the User Account Control prompt if one appears.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Regular mode first for recently deleted files on a non-corrupted NTFS volume. Microsoft recommends Extensive mode for older deletions, formatted or corrupted NTFS volumes, and FAT or exFAT volumes.

  • Included 12V 2A Power Supply: USB 3.0 to IDE SATA adapter included 12V2A AC power supply, for power up the 5V/12V IDE devices usage, ensures SATA HDD can be connected well. 4pin power cable is designed for a 3.5’’ IDE drive; LED light shows power and activity status
winfr C: E: /regular /n Users<username>Documents
winfr C: E: /regular /n *.pdf /n *.docx
winfr E: C: /extensive /n *invoice*
winfr C: E: /extensive /n Users<username>Pictures*.JPEG /n Users<username>Pictures*.PNG

Replace C: and E: with the actual source and destination drives. A command that writes results back to the source drive defeats the basic safety rule of recovery.

How to choose the right recovery tool

Your situation Start with Why
Recently deleted files on readable NTFS Recuva, EaseUS or Windows File Recovery These can use filesystem metadata and may preserve names and folders
Recently deleted files on macOS EaseUS, Stellar or Disk Drill They provide a graphical workflow for Mac volumes
Formatted or badly corrupted volume Stellar, EaseUS, DMDE or PhotoRec These offer deeper or filesystem-independent scanning
Lost partition Stellar, Disk Drill, DMDE or TestDisk Partition analysis is more relevant than a basic undelete scan
Large recovery with no budget DMDE Free Edition or PhotoRec Both avoid the small trial limits common in commercial tools
Drive clicking, disconnecting or reporting I/O errors Image the drive first, or use a professional recovery service Repeated scans can stress failing hardware
Deleted data from a modern SSD Try recovery immediately, but expect reduced odds TRIM and garbage collection can discard the contents internally

What to do before scanning

  1. Stop using the affected device. Do not browse it, download files, run updates or save recovered files there.
  2. Do not install recovery software on the source drive. Use another computer, another internal drive, external storage or suitable bootable media.
  3. Check whether the drive is detected. If it is not visible in Windows or macOS, ordinary recovery software may not be able to access it.
  4. Use a different destination. Recovered files must be written to another drive or partition.
  5. Preview before recovering. A filename in a scan result does not prove that the file is intact.
  6. Image a failing drive first. A byte-to-byte image is different from a normal file copy: it attempts to preserve sectors and the damaged layout, including areas a file copy would skip.

SSD TRIM changes the recovery equation

The familiar advice that deleted files remain recoverable until new data overwrites them is more applicable to traditional hard drives than modern SSDs. When Windows issues a TRIM or deallocation command, the SSD learns that blocks are no longer needed. Garbage collection may later clear those blocks internally.

Once the SSD has discarded the data, recovery software may see zeros or no usable file contents. Do not disable this risk by continuing to use the computer while deciding what to do. Shut it down or stop using the affected storage as soon as possible.

When software recovery is the wrong approach

Software cannot repair physical media damage. If the drive clicks, repeatedly disconnects, becomes exceptionally slow or reports serious I/O errors, every additional scan may increase stress on the device. Create a sector-level image if the drive remains stable enough to read, then work from the image rather than the original.

If the device is not detected by the operating system at all, an application such as Disk Drill normally cannot scan it. A professional recovery service may be required, particularly for a failed drive, damaged USB connector, failed RAID member or important business data.

Encryption is another boundary. BitLocker, FileVault and similar systems require the correct password, recovery key or access permissions. Filesystem support does not mean that a recovery application can bypass encryption.

What “deep scan” really means

A deep scan is not automatically a better version of every recovery attempt. It examines more of the device and can locate file fragments without relying as heavily on intact filesystem records, but it takes longer and commonly sacrifices filenames, paths and folder structure.

Signature-based carving also has problems with fragmented files. A tool may find the beginning of a video or document while missing later fragments, producing a file that appears in the results but will not open correctly. PhotoRec enables Paranoid verification by default and provides a Keep corrupted files option when partial salvage is preferable to discarding questionable results.

How recovery software should be tested

A meaningful comparison must test more than how many filenames appear after deleting a few documents. A fair test uses separate media and records the operating-system version, filesystem, drive model, capacity, deletion method, time before scanning and whether the device was used after deletion.

The test set should include:

  1. Recently deleted files from NTFS, APFS, exFAT and FAT32.
  2. Files deleted after emptying the Recycle Bin or Trash.
  3. A quick-formatted volume.
  4. A corrupted filesystem.
  5. A deleted or lost partition.
  6. Large fragmented files.
  7. Photos and video from an SD card.
  8. Both an HDD and an SSD, with SSD results reported separately because of TRIM.
  9. Filename and folder preservation.
  10. Whether recovered files actually open correctly, rather than simply counting listed filenames.
  11. Scan time, memory and processor use, and pause/resume support.
  12. Free-edition limits, licensing and whether installation on the affected computer is required.

Without those details, a claimed recovery percentage is difficult to reproduce and may say little about how the software will perform on your drive.

FAQ

What is the best data recovery software overall?

EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard is the best starting point for most Windows and Mac users because its workflow is straightforward and it supports common internal, external and removable storage. It is not universally best: PhotoRec or DMDE may be better for free recovery, while Stellar may suit advanced scans and partition work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can recovery software recover files from an SSD?

Sometimes, but SSD recovery is less predictable than hard-drive recovery. TRIM and garbage collection can discard deleted blocks before software scans them. Stop using the SSD immediately and avoid installing software or saving recovered files on it.

Should recovered files be saved to the same drive?

No. Always use a different physical drive or partition. Writing recovered files to the source can overwrite other deleted data and reduce the chance of recovering it.

Is PhotoRec only for recovering photos?

No. PhotoRec supports many document, archive, video and other file families. Its name reflects its original emphasis. The important limitation is that its normal file-carving workflow usually does not preserve original filenames or folder structure.

The Bottom Line

For the simplest first attempt, use EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard. Choose Stellar when you need more advanced scan controls, Recuva for a straightforward Windows undelete, PhotoRec when free filesystem-independent carving matters, and DMDE when you want a powerful free option and can handle a technical interface. Use Windows File Recovery if you prefer Microsoft’s command-line tool.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Whichever application you choose, the procedure matters more than the brand: stop using the source drive, do not install software or save results there, and image a physically failing drive before attempting repeated scans. If the data is irreplaceable and the hardware is not detected, stop experimenting and contact a professional recovery service.
