NordLayer is the best general-purpose business VPN for most small and midsize organizations. It combines centralized administration, MFA and SSO, always-on protection, private gateways, access controls, multi-platform clients, and relatively transparent pricing. Its plans displayed with annual billing on August 9, 2026 were $8 per user per month for Lite, $11 for Core, and $14 for Premium, with a five-user minimum. Check NordLayer pricing.
However, “best business VPN” depends on the access model. Twingate is usually the better VPN replacement when employees need least-privilege access to specific private applications. GoodAccess is a strong choice when a dedicated static IP is the main requirement, while Tailscale is better for developers and infrastructure teams. Cloudflare One, Cisco Secure Access, Zscaler Private Access, and Check Point SASE are more appropriate for organizations adopting a broader enterprise ZTNA, SSE, or SASE architecture.
Quick recommendations

What makes a VPN a business VPN?
A business VPN is an organizational access and security system, not simply a consumer privacy application bought in bulk. The relevant question is not how many countries it covers or whether it unblocks streaming services. It is whether the organization can control who has access, what they can reach, which devices are allowed, and what happens when an employee leaves.
A credible business-oriented service should normally provide:
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Multi-user licensing and centralized billing.
- Administrator-controlled invitations, suspension, deletion, and license reassignment.
- MFA for users and administrators, preferably with SSO through the company identity provider.
- Groups or teams for applying access policies consistently.
- Always-on or auto-connect controls.
- Device inventory and, ideally, device-posture checks.
- Private gateways or connectors for internal resources.
- Dedicated IP or IP allowlisting when external services require a known source address.
- Activity, authentication, or resource-access logs suitable for security operations.
- Clients that support the company’s actual Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, ChromeOS, and other platforms.
- Support and service commitments appropriate to the business.
- Clear documentation about data processing, retention, and compliance scope.
This distinction is also reflected in business VPN comparisons from TechRadar and VPN.com, which emphasize management, scalability, SSO/MFA, device controls, platform support, and administration rather than consumer features such as streaming.
A consumer VPN can still be useful for an individual employee’s privacy or travel use. But a personal subscription generally does not provide the lifecycle controls, auditability, private-resource access, or administrative separation required to operate a company securely.
First decide what kind of access you need
Many poor VPN purchasing decisions happen because a company chooses a product before defining its traffic model. There are four materially different requirements.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
1. Secure employee internet access
Employees connect to a provider gateway, and some or all internet traffic exits through the business VPN. This is useful for people working from hotels, cafés, airports, home networks, or other untrusted connections.
Prioritize always-on VPN, DNS and malware filtering, fail-closed behavior or a kill switch, centralized policy enforcement, a dedicated egress IP if allowlisting is necessary, split tunneling, device management, and reliable clients for the operating systems employees actually use.
Good candidates: NordLayer, GoodAccess, ExpressVPN for Teams, and Cloudflare One.
2. Remote access to private company resources
Employees need internal web applications, file shares, RDP, SSH, databases, private cloud networks, or other resources that should not be exposed directly to the public internet.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Prioritize private connectors or gateways, resource- or application-level authorization, group-based access, internal DNS, port and protocol controls, device posture, identity-provider integration, audit logs, and redundancy.
Good candidates: Twingate, NordLayer Core or Premium, Cloudflare Access, Zscaler Private Access, and Cisco Secure Access.
3. Site-to-site or mesh networking
Offices, cloud VPCs, servers, and devices need to communicate with one another. This is different from simply sending employee web traffic through a VPN gateway.
Look for site-to-site tunnels, subnet routing, high availability, overlapping-CIDR handling, private DNS, monitoring, failover, and compatibility with printers, file shares, VoIP, and legacy protocols. Depending on the environment, a firewall-based VPN may be more appropriate than a SaaS employee VPN.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsGood candidates: NordLayer Premium, Tailscale, Cisco, Check Point, Zscaler, or a firewall-based solution.
4. Least-privilege VPN replacement
Employees should reach only the applications and resources they are authorized to use—not an entire corporate network simply because they authenticated successfully.
Prioritize per-resource policies, identity-based access, device posture, session or continuous reauthorization, application invisibility to unauthorized users, temporary contractor access, and detailed policy logs.
Good candidates: Twingate, Cloudflare Access, Zscaler Private Access, Cisco Secure Access, and Check Point SASE.
This model follows the principles in NIST SP 800-207: network location should not create implicit trust, and access should be authenticated, authorized, and limited for each session and resource.
Business VPN comparison
Prices below are public prices or vendor-displayed terms checked on August 9, 2026. Unless stated otherwise, a per-user price refers to annual billing. Taxes, gateways, add-ons, enterprise support, and renewal terms can change the final bill.
| Product | Pricing and minimum | Best fit | Private-resource model | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NordLayer | Lite $8, Core $11, Premium $14 per user/month; five-user minimum. Core and Premium may require a separate $40/month dedicated-IP server. | General-purpose managed SMB VPN | Private gateways; Premium adds site-to-site, Cloud LAN, and more segmentation. | Costs rise when private gateways, dedicated IPs, device posture, or advanced controls are required. |
| Twingate | Starter free for up to five users; Teams $5/user/month up to 100 users; Business $10/user/month up to 500 users; Enterprise custom. | Modern VPN replacement and least-privilege access | Connectors deployed inside networks; users receive access to defined Resources. | Not a simple full-tunnel employee internet VPN. |
| GoodAccess | Essential $7/user/month and Premium $11/user/month, five-user minimum, plus $49/month per dedicated gateway. | Static IP and straightforward cloud VPN | Dedicated gateways with static IPs and access controls. | Gateway fees materially affect total cost; higher-end ZTNA and support may require a quote. |
| Tailscale | Personal free up to six users; Standard $8/user/month; Premium $18/user/month. | Developers, infrastructure, and mesh connectivity | Identity-aware mesh, subnet routers, exit nodes, and device connectivity. | Not primarily a secure web gateway or employee browsing-filtering platform. |
| Cloudflare One | Current public page advertises a free proof of concept and directs Cloudflare One buyers toward sales; confirm commercial terms before purchase. | Cloudflare-centric SASE or ZTNA adoption | Access, Tunnel, Client, Gateway, and related connectivity options. | Broad capability brings configuration complexity; Tunnel has protocol limitations. |
| ExpressVPN for Teams | Five-license minimum; volume discounts; dedicated IP available as a custom add-on. Public pricing should be confirmed with the vendor. | Simple employee VPN deployment | Primarily managed VPN protection rather than deep private-resource segmentation. | New dedicated business offering; mature SCIM, posture, and complex segmentation should be verified. |
| Cisco Secure Access | Enterprise sales process and non-public pricing. | Enterprise SSE, VPNaaS, and ZTNA migration | Client and clientless access with centralized policy and dashboard. | Implementation and procurement complexity. |
| Zscaler Private Access | Enterprise quote. | Large-scale application-specific ZTNA | App Connectors and policy-based access without putting users on-net. | Usually excessive for a small team seeking an inexpensive VPN. |
| Check Point SASE | Public pricing is not straightforward. | Security-heavy organizations and Check Point customers | Private access, internet access, ZTNA, secure web gateway, and dedicated static-IP gateways. | Product naming and documentation remain in transition from Perimeter 81. |
1. NordLayer: best overall managed business VPN for SMBs
NordLayer is the strongest default recommendation for a five- to 500-user organization that wants a conventional, centrally managed business VPN without building the service from scratch.
Its current self-service plans displayed with annual billing are:
Rank #2
- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
- Lite: $8 per user per month.
- Core: $11 per user per month.
- Premium: $14 per user per month.
There is a five-user minimum and a 14-day money-back guarantee. Taxes are calculated separately. NordLayer also lists an enterprise offer starting at $6 per user per month for 200 users, beginning with Lite capabilities; enterprise terms should be confirmed directly. See the current NordLayer pricing page.
What Lite includes
Lite lists shared gateways in more than 40 countries, up to 1 Gbps of listed server performance, MFA, always-on VPN, auto-connect, SSO, six devices per license, activity reports, multi-platform apps, and 24/7 live chat and email support.
Lite does not include private gateways, dedicated IP, IP allowlisting, device-posture security, site-to-site connectors, Cloud LAN, or IP-based split tunneling. That distinction matters: Lite is a managed employee internet-protection plan, not a complete private-company-network plan.
What Core adds
Core adds virtual private gateway locations, dedicated IP, IP allowlisting, DNS filtering, custom DNS, an application blocker, IP-based split tunneling, manual configuration, device-posture monitoring, and a dedicated account manager.
NordLayer lists a separate $40-per-month server with a dedicated IP for Core and Premium when that capability is needed. Include that fee in the total-cost calculation rather than comparing only the user price.
What Premium adds
Premium adds Cloud Firewall as a Service, device-posture security, a site-to-site connector, Cloud LAN, a browser extension, user provisioning, and more granular network segmentation.
Administration and deployment
NordLayer’s documented administration path is:
- Open Organization → Members → Invite new member.
- Create groups under Organization → Teams.
- Add members to the appropriate teams.
- Create or select a gateway.
- Assign the team to that gateway.
- Add servers or private gateways where required.
The workflow is documented in NordLayer’s organization-management guide. Test suspension, deletion, session revocation, and license reassignment during the pilot rather than assuming that all lifecycle operations behave identically.
Protocols and compatibility
NordLayer’s current documentation identifies NordLynx, OpenVPN TCP, and OpenVPN UDP as client protocol choices. IKEv2/IPsec support for app and manual user connections was sunset during 2024–2025.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

nordlayer settings set vpnprotocol nordlynx
nordlayer connect <gateway-id> --protocol nordlynx
nordlayer connect <gateway-id> --protocol openvpn_tcp
nordlayer connect <gateway-id> --protocol openvpn_udp
The documented accepted values are automatic, nordlynx, openvpn_tcp, and openvpn_udp. See the Linux protocol guide and Linux usage documentation.
Who should not choose NordLayer?
Do not choose Lite if the actual requirement is private application access, dedicated IP allowlisting, site-to-site connectivity, or device posture. Choose Twingate or another ZTNA product if users should access individual applications without gaining broad network reach. Choose Tailscale if the central problem is connecting engineers and servers rather than filtering employee internet traffic.
2. Twingate: best VPN replacement for private applications
Twingate is the best alternative when “VPN” really means “let authorized people reach selected internal applications.” Its architecture uses a client on the user device, Connectors deployed behind the firewall, a hosted Controller, and relays when direct peer-to-peer connectivity is unavailable. It does not require users to be placed broadly on the corporate network.
Public pricing lists:
- Starter: free for up to five users and 50 Resources.
- Teams: $5 per user per month, up to 100 users.
- Business: $10 per user per month, up to 500 users.
- Enterprise: custom pricing.
Annual billing discounts displayed on the pricing page are 15% for Teams and Business. Check Twingate’s pricing.

How access works
The normal deployment path is:
- Create a Twingate account.
- Define a Remote Network.
- Define a Resource using a hostname, IP address, CIDR range, or application address.
- Assign the Resource to an authorized group.
- Deploy a Connector on a host that can reach the Resource.
- Install the Twingate Client on the user device.
- Authenticate and test only the Resources assigned to that user.
Twingate denies access to Resources unless the user has been explicitly authorized. It can restrict ports and protocols, and supported applications such as browsers, SSH, RDP, and VNC generally do not need to be reconfigured. The official quick-start guide, Connector documentation, and Resource documentation explain the model.
Important trade-off
Twingate requires deployment and maintenance of Connectors inside networks containing protected resources. It is therefore more involved than installing a conventional full-tunnel VPN client, although the Connector model can reduce the need to expose internal services or create broad inbound firewall access.
It is also not automatically the best choice when every employee’s entire internet connection must exit through a corporate gateway. In that case, evaluate NordLayer, GoodAccess, Cloudflare Gateway, or an enterprise SSE product.
3. GoodAccess: best for static IP and simple cloud VPN deployment
GoodAccess deserves a prominent place on the shortlist when the business mainly needs a dedicated static IP, straightforward cloud VPN deployment, and basic centralized access controls.
Its business page lists:
- Starter: free.
- Essential: $7 per user per month, five-user minimum, plus $49 per month for each dedicated gateway.
- Premium: $11 per user per month, five-user minimum, plus $49 per month for each dedicated gateway.
- Enterprise: quote-based, with a 50-user minimum.
Dedicated gateways provide static IPs. Listed capabilities include split tunneling, 2FA, gateway-level access logs, device inventory, threat blocking, and applications for Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and ChromeOS. The business page lists more than 35 gateway locations and vendor-stated 1 Gbps per gateway with unlimited data usage. Those speed and capacity figures are vendor specifications, not independent comparative measurements. See GoodAccess business features and detailed plans and add-ons.
The main caveat is total cost. For five Essential users, the displayed base price is $35 per month before the $49 gateway charge, taxes, and other additions. A dedicated gateway can also become a single egress dependency, so ask about redundancy, gateway locations, failover, and whether multiple static IPs are needed.
4. Tailscale: best for developers and infrastructure teams
Tailscale is a connectivity platform built around identity-aware mesh networking. It is particularly effective for developers, server administrators, Kubernetes and CI/CD environments, subnet routers, exit nodes, and teams that need simple connections between devices and private infrastructure.

- Standard: $8 per user per month.
- Premium: $18 per user per month.
Standard lists SCIM, MDM integration, device-posture integrations, and advanced roles. Premium adds just-in-time access, network-flow logs, log streaming, regional routing, and priority support. The plans list unlimited user devices. Check Tailscale’s business pricing.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Its limitation is category fit. Tailscale is not primarily a secure web gateway or an employee browsing-filtering platform. It may provide an exit node for internet egress, but organizations that need centralized DNS security, web filtering, broad employee policy enforcement, or a dedicated business egress architecture should compare it with NordLayer, Cloudflare One, GoodAccess, or an SSE platform.
5. Cloudflare One: best for Cloudflare-centric organizations
Cloudflare One is broader than a conventional VPN. Cloudflare describes Access as identity-first zero-trust network access for private applications and infrastructure. Cloudflare One can combine Access, Cloudflare Tunnel, the Cloudflare One Client, Gateway, and related SASE functions.
It is a strong candidate when the business already uses Cloudflare or wants a platform covering private-application access and internet security rather than a standalone VPN client. See the Cloudflare Access overview, current Zero Trust pricing page, and Cloudflare One documentation.
Do not rely on old Cloudflare pricing
Older articles commonly quote a free plan for up to 50 users and a $7-per-user paid plan. The currently visible public pricing page advertises a free proof of concept and directs Cloudflare One or SASE buyers toward sales instead of presenting that full historical table. Confirm current commercial terms, limits, support, and add-ons before publication or purchase.
Tunnel has a meaningful limitation
Cloudflare Tunnel is an off-ramp-only connectivity option. Cloudflare’s documentation says it does not support server-initiated protocols such as VoIP callbacks. Organizations requiring bidirectional network behavior may need the Cloudflare One Client, Cloudflare Mesh, IPsec or GRE, or another connectivity method. Review Cloudflare’s connectivity options and account limits before committing.
6. ExpressVPN for Teams: best for simple small-team deployment
ExpressVPN for Teams launched in January 2026 as an upgrade to the company’s previous volume-licensing model. It provides centralized billing and administration, license assignment and reassignment, volume discounts, a five-license minimum, 24/7 live chat, and a 30-day money-back guarantee. A dedicated IP for Teams is available as a custom-provisioned add-on. See the Teams product page and the launch announcement.
This is a reasonable choice for a small team that mainly needs simple employee internet protection and minimal deployment friction. It is not an automatic choice for a company requiring mature SCIM, detailed device posture, granular private-application segmentation, site-to-site networking, or complex policy integrations. ExpressVPN described the Teams product as an initial release with more features and integrations planned, so verify the exact administrative and identity features before signing a longer contract.
Enterprise alternatives
Cisco Secure Access
Cisco positions Secure Access as a cloud-delivered SSE platform combining VPNaaS and ZTNA, with client and clientless access, least-privilege policies, and a centralized dashboard. It is suitable for enterprises migrating from legacy VPN while adopting broader security controls. Pricing and implementation are handled through an enterprise sales process. See Cisco’s VPN and Secure Access information.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Zscaler Private Access
Zscaler Private Access provides application access without putting users “on-net.” It uses policy-based access, SSO, App Connectors, and centralized visibility. It is a strong fit for large organizations with a mature identity and security program, but generally excessive for a small team seeking an inexpensive managed VPN. See Zscaler’s ZPA overview.
Zscaler also documents a separate VPN-for-legacy-applications path for systems that require Layer-3 behavior, VoIP, or server-to-client connectivity. That distinction is important when planning a staged VPN-to-ZTNA migration; see the legacy-application configuration guide.
Check Point SASE
The former Perimeter 81 offering is now documented under Check Point SASE. Check Point describes private access, internet access, ZTNA, secure web gateway functions, global regions, and dedicated static-IP gateways. Product naming and documentation are in transition: the Perimeter 81 documentation site says it is being deprecated and directs customers to the Check Point Documentation Portal, with a stated removal date of July 26, 2026. See the gateway documentation and verify current product names, contracts, migration requirements, and pricing with Check Point.
Traditional VPN versus ZTNA
A traditional remote-access VPN creates an encrypted tunnel between a user device and a gateway. Depending on the configuration, the user may then receive access to a network segment, internal routes, DNS servers, and many services reachable from that segment.
ZTNA is more selective. It authenticates the user and device, evaluates policy, and grants access to specific applications or resources. An employee can reach the internal HR application without being placed broadly on the server network. This reduces the blast radius of stolen credentials or a compromised endpoint, although it does not remove the need for endpoint security and careful policy design.
NIST’s zero-trust model rejects implicit trust based on network location. CISA and partner agencies have also highlighted risks in traditional remote-access VPN deployments and encouraged organizations to evaluate ZTNA, SSE, and SASE approaches.
ZTNA is not a universal replacement. It can be less suitable for broadcast discovery, multicast, some VoIP deployments, server-initiated protocols, legacy applications that require Layer-3 adjacency, and complex site-to-site routing. The sensible migration path is usually application-by-application: retain a conventional VPN for legacy systems while moving suitable web, SSH, RDP, and other private resources to least-privilege access.
Features that deserve close examination
Identity, MFA, and provisioning
Require MFA for every user, with stronger phishing-resistant MFA for administrators and privileged users. CISA’s SMB MFA guidance specifically recommends requiring MFA for remote access and prioritizing phishing-resistant methods.
Check for SSO through the actual identity provider, SCIM or automated provisioning, separate administrator roles, short privileged-session lifetimes, and a recovery process that does not silently bypass the security model. Do not use shared administrator accounts.
Device posture
A valid user login does not make a device trustworthy. Check whether the product can evaluate operating-system and client versions, disk encryption, rooted or jailbroken status, EDR or antivirus presence, screen lock, MDM enrollment, patch level, device ownership, or a corporate certificate.

NordLayer lists device-posture monitoring or security depending on plan, while Twingate lists native posture checks on Teams and broader endpoint-detection integrations on Business. These checks do not replace EDR, MDM, vulnerability management, patching, or endpoint hardening.
Dedicated IP and allowlisting
A dedicated IP is useful when a SaaS provider, client firewall, financial service, development system, or administrative service accepts connections only from known source addresses.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →It adds cost and can create a single egress bottleneck or outage dependency. It also makes traffic attributable to the organization and does not replace identity-based authorization. Ask whether the address is dedicated to the organization, where it is located, whether multiple gateways are available, how failover works, and whether the IP is included or an add-on.
Split tunneling
Split tunneling sends only business traffic through the VPN and routes ordinary internet traffic directly. It can reduce latency and gateway load and improve video conferencing or large-download performance. But traffic outside the tunnel may bypass company filtering, DNS controls, and inspection. It can also complicate local-network access and make policy harder to explain.
Confirm whether the service supports IP-based, domain-based, application-based, browser-only, or local-network exceptions. NordLayer’s plan table shows that split-tunneling capabilities vary by tier.
Protocols and reliability
Do not select a provider merely because it advertises a particular protocol. Test behavior on restrictive networks, UDP and TCP fallback, roaming between Wi-Fi and cellular, battery use, sleep and wake, reconnection, IPv6 handling, DNS leak behavior, manual configuration, and legacy application compatibility.

Hotels, airports, cafés, and some public Wi-Fi networks require browser authentication before allowing normal internet traffic. The usual sequence is to connect to Wi-Fi, authenticate through the captive portal, and then reconnect the VPN. NordLayer’s member guide documents this failure mode.
Local printers and home devices
Always-on VPN can interfere with printers, wireless displays, home-office routers, NAS devices, and local discovery. Decide whether local-network access is allowed, whether a narrowly scoped exception is acceptable, and whether the exception is applied consistently across operating systems.
Private DNS
A user may be authorized and still unable to connect because an internal hostname does not resolve. Check private DNS, split DNS, search suffixes, changing IP addresses, and whether the resource should be defined by hostname rather than a fixed address. Twingate’s Resource documentation explains that resolution for private destinations occurs from the Connector’s network.
RDP, SMB, SSH, and VoIP
RDP and SSH are usually straightforward if the client can reach the correct host and port. SMB may require internal DNS, correct name resolution, and careful handling of Windows authentication. VoIP, callbacks, broadcast discovery, multicast, and server-to-client initiation need explicit testing because not every ZTNA connector supports the required network behavior.
Cloudflare explicitly documents that Tunnel is off-ramp only and does not support server-initiated protocols such as VoIP callbacks. Zscaler provides a separate legacy-application VPN path for cases requiring Layer-3 behavior.
Gateway failure and allowlisting
If a single dedicated gateway is allowlisted by a client or SaaS service, its failure can stop access even when the VPN platform itself is online. Ask about multiple gateways, redundant static IPs, DNS or routing failover, health monitoring, and how quickly a replacement address can be provisioned.
Logging and employee privacy
“No logs” is not a sufficient business requirement. A business service may maintain provider operational logs, organization activity reports, authentication records, device inventory, gateway connection logs, resource-access logs, and SIEM exports.
Distinguish between the provider’s logging policy, the employer’s administrative visibility, security records retained by the platform, and records exported to the employer’s SIEM. A business VPN should not be presented as making employee activity invisible to the employer. Define acceptable-use, monitoring, retention, and employee-notice policies before deployment.

Compliance claims
A vendor’s SOC 2, ISO 27001, GDPR, HIPAA, PCI DSS, or similar statement does not make the customer compliant automatically. Say that the product provides controls or documentation that may support a compliance program. A real assessment still requires appropriate configuration, contracts, risk analysis, access reviews, endpoint controls, logging, incident response, and other organizational safeguards.
Best Value
- Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
- Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
For example, GoodAccess publicly lists SOC 2 and ISO 27001 certification claims and says its controls support GDPR and HIPAA-related requirements. Attribute those statements to the vendor rather than converting them into a blanket compliance guarantee.
What business VPN comparison articles often miss
- Outdated names: Check Point documentation now uses Check Point SASE, while older coverage may call the product Perimeter 81 or Check Point Quantum.
- Consumer criteria: Server counts, Netflix access, torrenting, and country totals do not establish centralized offboarding, SSO, posture checks, segmentation, or auditability.
- Headline pricing: Minimum seats, annual billing, dedicated gateways, static IPs, support, posture controls, and logging can dominate the real bill.
- Overbroad VPN-replacement claims: A ZTNA product may replace remote-access VPN for many applications but not every legacy, broadcast, multicast, VoIP, or server-initiated workload.
- Unstandardized testing: Business VPN coverage rarely publishes a repeatable test design covering geographic locations, ISP types, time of day, failover, policy accuracy, offboarding, DNS, IPv6, RDP, SMB, and VoIP. Do not imply independent performance testing unless it was actually performed.
TechRadar says its business comparison considered speed, server availability, SSO, support, platform support, integrations, affordability, and ease of use. That is useful context, but buyers should still run their own policy, lifecycle, and application-compatibility pilot.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a business VPN different from a personal VPN?
Yes. A business VPN should provide centralized billing and administration, user suspension and offboarding, MFA and preferably SSO, teams or groups, device visibility, private gateways or connectors, policy controls, and business-appropriate logs and support. A personal VPN normally focuses on an individual user’s privacy and location rather than organizational access management.

Do small businesses need a VPN?
Not every small business needs a full-tunnel VPN. If employees only use well-secured SaaS services, an identity provider, MFA, device management, and endpoint security may be more important. A VPN or ZTNA service becomes more relevant when employees use untrusted networks, need a dedicated IP, access private applications, connect offices, or require centralized internet filtering.
Is ZTNA better than a traditional VPN?
ZTNA is usually better when users need access to specific applications and the business wants least privilege instead of broad network access. A traditional VPN can be better for legacy applications, full network-layer access, site-to-site routing, broadcast or multicast dependencies, and some VoIP or server-initiated workloads. Many organizations use both during a staged migration.
Does a business VPN provide a static IP?
Some do, but it is often a higher-tier feature or separate charge. NordLayer lists dedicated-IP functionality in Core and Premium and may require a separate $40 monthly dedicated-IP server. GoodAccess uses dedicated gateways listed at $49 per month in addition to its user plans. Confirm the geography, redundancy, ownership, and allowlisting behavior before buying.
Can employees use personal devices with a business VPN?
They can if the service supports BYOD, but access should be limited carefully. A VPN login does not prove that a personal device is patched, encrypted, malware-free, or managed. Consider browser-based or application-specific access, posture checks, limited resource groups, and a written policy before allowing BYOD access to sensitive systems.

A VPN encrypts traffic between the device and its gateway, but it does not replace the identity, MFA, endpoint, browser, email-security, or application controls protecting Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace. Those services should still use strong identity policies, phishing-resistant MFA where possible, conditional access, least privilege, and endpoint security.
Does a VPN prevent phishing?
No. A VPN does not identify every malicious email, fake login page, or social-engineering attack. It should be combined with phishing-resistant MFA, secure email controls, browser protection, user training, endpoint detection, patching, and incident-response procedures.
Can a VPN replace EDR?
No. A VPN protects or controls network connectivity; EDR monitors endpoint behavior and helps detect and respond to compromise. Device-posture checks can supplement EDR and MDM but are not substitutes for them.
What is the difference between a business VPN and a site-to-site VPN?
A business or remote-access VPN usually connects individual employee devices to company or provider gateways. A site-to-site VPN connects offices, cloud networks, or other network locations. Site-to-site requirements demand routing, redundancy, subnet compatibility, private DNS, and application-protocol testing that an employee VPN may not provide.
Will a business VPN work with RDP, SMB, SSH, and VoIP?
RDP and SSH commonly work when the correct host, port, DNS, and policy are configured. SMB requires reliable internal name resolution and Windows authentication. VoIP, callbacks, broadcast discovery, multicast, and server-initiated traffic require specific testing because some ZTNA connectors are designed mainly for client-initiated application access.
Can the employer see employee browsing through a business VPN?
Potentially, yes. Depending on the product configuration, administrators may have connection, authentication, gateway, DNS, activity, or security logs, and the organization may export records to a SIEM. Review the provider’s retention terms and define an employee-notice and acceptable-use policy. Do not assume that a business VPN provides personal browsing privacy from the employer.
How many users do the recommended plans require?
NordLayer self-service plans have a five-user minimum. GoodAccess Essential and Premium also have a five-user minimum, plus dedicated-gateway charges when needed. ExpressVPN for Teams has a five-license minimum. Twingate Starter supports up to five users, while Teams and Business support up to 100 and 500 users respectively. Confirm current terms because limits and pricing can change.
Are the advertised prices monthly or annual?
NordLayer’s $8, $11, and $14 prices are displayed as per-user monthly prices with annual billing. Twingate displays annual-billing discounts for Teams and Business. GoodAccess lists monthly per-user prices plus dedicated-gateway charges. Always confirm the billing term, taxes, minimum seats, renewal price, and add-ons at checkout or in the contract.

An administrator should suspend or delete the account, revoke active sessions and device access, remove the user from groups, reclaim the license, and review resources or static-IP allowlists that user controlled. Test this process during the pilot; a product’s invitation workflow alone does not prove that offboarding is immediate or complete.
The Bottom Line
For most SMBs, start with NordLayer—but choose the plan based on the traffic model, not the Lite headline price. Core or Premium may be necessary for private gateways, dedicated IPs, DNS controls, device posture, segmentation, or site-to-site access.
Choose Twingate when the safer answer is application-specific access rather than putting users on a broad network. Choose GoodAccess for a clear static-IP requirement, Tailscale for engineering and mesh connectivity, Cloudflare One for a Cloudflare-centered SASE strategy, ExpressVPN for Teams for simple employee VPN protection, and Cisco Secure Access, Zscaler Private Access, or Check Point SASE for enterprise-scale security architecture.
Whichever product you select, pilot identity lifecycle, DNS, failover, local-network behavior, private applications, RDP, SMB, VoIP, posture enforcement, logging, and offboarding before deployment. A VPN is one control in a remote-access program—not a replacement for MFA, endpoint security, patching, backups, phishing defenses, or secure application design.
