The best AI search engine depends on what you want from search. Google Search AI Mode is the strongest all-round choice for Google services and multimodal queries. Perplexity is better suited to source-led research. Bing Copilot Search keeps a conventional results page in the experience, while Brave emphasizes privacy and an independent index. ChatGPT Search is convenient when you already work in a conversational assistant, and Kagi Assistant is the most compelling option for people willing to pay for privacy, search quality and model choice.
These products are not interchangeable. Some primarily generate an answer, some combine an answer with ranked links, and some are research assistants that search repeatedly before producing a report. The exact mode matters as much as the brand.

1. Google Search AI Mode: best general-purpose option
Google Search AI Mode is the best starting point for most people who want AI assistance without leaving Google Search. It is particularly useful when a question touches Google’s wider ecosystem: local places in Maps, products and prices, YouTube videos, news, images or documents.
Google says the feature uses Gemini 3, multimodal understanding, advanced reasoning and Search Live. Its “query fan-out” system breaks a complicated question into several related searches, runs them concurrently and combines the findings into a response. That makes it more useful than a normal keyword search for comparison questions, trip planning and multi-part research.
#1 Best Overall
How to open it
- On a desktop browser, go to google.com/ai, or open Google Search and select AI Mode after entering a question.
- In the Google app, select AI Mode on the home screen.
- Use the Ask anything field to enter text, speak a question, upload an image or attach a PDF where the feature is available.
- For a voice conversation, select the Live icon in AI Mode where Search Live has been enabled for your account.
Google’s Deep Search option is intended for more extensive research. Google says it can conduct hundreds of searches, reason across different sources and create a cited report. Availability and behavior can differ by country, account and rollout stage, so do not assume every Google account has the same controls.
What to watch out for
AI Mode is not the same thing as an AI Overview. AI Overviews can appear automatically on ordinary results pages; AI Mode is a separate conversational interface. If you want a link-focused page after an ordinary search, select the Web filter. Google does not currently document a universal setting that permanently disables all AI Overviews.
Google also warns that generated responses can misread a page or miss important context. For prices, health advice, legal information, breaking news and technical instructions, open the cited pages rather than treating the summary as the evidence.

2. Perplexity: best for research with visible sources
Perplexity remains the clearest choice when the main job is to investigate a subject and see where the answer came from. Its answer-first interface searches across articles, academic papers, forums, videos and other sources, then places source links near the relevant claims.
That does not mean every citation proves every sentence. A linked page can be topically relevant while failing to support a specific detail, so source checking is still necessary. Perplexity is a research shortcut, not a substitute for reading primary material.
Which Perplexity mode should you use?
| Mode | Use it for |
|---|---|
| Best | Routine questions where speed matters more than an extensive investigation. |
| Pro Search | More involved questions that benefit from multiple searches and source analysis. |
| Reasoning Search | Questions requiring additional reasoning before the answer is written. |
| Research | Long-form investigations and reports built from repeated searches. |
Choose Research from the mode selector in the search box on the web, mobile or Mac app. Perplexity says Research may perform dozens of searches, read hundreds of sources and iteratively refine its investigation. It commonly takes about three to five minutes, although the actual time varies. Results can be exported as a PDF or document, or converted into a Perplexity Page.
Research automatically selects its model combination. You cannot manually choose a model while Research is running. If model selection is important, use another mode. Perplexity Pro offers access to several models, including Perplexity’s Sonar and models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google; the available list changes over time.

Perplexity’s current individual-plan comparison lists three Pro Searches per day and one Research query per month on the Free plan. Basic searches are described as practically unlimited. Pro and Max provide higher, usage-based allowances, but paid limits should not be described as unlimited: Perplexity labels some allowances as average or advanced use, and access may be restricted during heavy demand. Education Pro is listed at $10 per month for verified students and educators.
Do not confuse Research with Perplexity’s Computer feature. Computer uses a separate credit system; consumer Pro does not include a recurring monthly Computer allocation after any promotional bonus, while Max includes 10,000 monthly credits according to Perplexity’s current documentation.
3. Bing Copilot Search: best hybrid of AI and normal results
Bing Copilot Search is a good fit if you want an AI-generated explanation but still expect a recognizable search-results page. Microsoft combines Bing’s conventional results with a summary, prominent citations, related-topic suggestions, images and videos.
How to access it
- Open Microsoft’s Copilot Search entry point at aka.ms/CopilotSearchinBing.
- Alternatively, go to Bing and select Copilot Search in the navigation bar when it is shown.
- Follow one of the suggested related topics beneath a relevant answer to continue the exploration without starting a separate search.
The earlier result remains available on the same page, which makes follow-up questions less disruptive than opening a new search each time. This is useful for broad discovery, but conventional results remain important for shopping inventory, rapidly changing prices, breaking news and technical details.
Copilot Search is not the same product as Microsoft 365 Copilot Search. The former searches the public web through Bing; the latter can search an organization’s files, chats, meetings and people, subject to Microsoft 365 permissions. Availability also varies by market, browser and device.
4. ChatGPT Search: best if you want a web-connected assistant
ChatGPT Search suits people who would rather ask a question in natural language than scan a page of links. It can search automatically when a prompt would benefit from current information, then return a conversational answer with inline citations and a separate list of sources.
How to invoke Search
- In the ChatGPT composer, type
/. - Select Search.
- Ask your question and inspect the citations in the response.
- If a previous answer needs web grounding, select the refresh icon and choose Try again with Search.
- If citations are not visible inline, select Sources beneath the response or action bar.
OpenAI says ChatGPT Search is available to Free, Plus, Team, Edu and Enterprise users, as well as logged-out Free users. It works on the web, desktop applications and mobile apps. ChatGPT may rewrite your prompt into one or more targeted queries and send them to search partners.
The advantage is convenience: you can ask for a comparison, then request a table, a shorter explanation or a follow-up search in the same conversation. The trade-off is that ChatGPT is primarily an assistant interface rather than a broad ranked-results page. Use Google, Bing or Brave when you need to scan many independent results quickly.
Recommended Free Tools
Search does not make ChatGPT infallible. Pages can be unavailable because of paywalls, technical restrictions or robots.txt preferences. A response can also be incomplete or oversimplified. An ordinary ChatGPT answer is not automatically live-search grounded; Search must be invoked or selected when it does not run automatically.
5. Brave Search: best for privacy and an independent index
Brave Search is the strongest option here for users who want privacy, a non-Google search experience and an independent index. Brave says Search does not collect personal information to build user profiles and that it operates its own index rather than depending on a major search provider’s index.
Brave keeps AI features close to ordinary results:
- Answer with AI produces a concise response with references.
- Ask Brave produces a longer answer, supports follow-up questions and includes a Deep Research mode.
Ask Brave can also surface videos, news, products and businesses. The two AI features should not be treated as the same mode: Answer with AI is the shorter results-page answer, while Ask Brave is the more conversational experience.
Brave Search is also useful when you want more control over ordinary queries. Supported operators include:
"exact phrase"
-word
+word
Its Bangs include !r for Reddit and !a for Amazon. Community-created Goggles can alter ranking and filtering for particular types of searches.
The privacy distinction has an edge case. Brave’s claims concern Brave Search’s own handling of search data; they do not automatically describe the privacy terms of an external model or connected service that you choose to use. Brave also notes that its built-in Search AI uses in-house technology and open-source models for parts of the feature.
Rank #4
An independent index can have different coverage from Google or Bing. You may notice this most with obscure pages, newly published content and local searches. AI answers can still misrepresent a cited source, so independence does not eliminate verification.
6. Kagi Assistant: best paid privacy-oriented choice
Kagi Assistant is aimed at people who already value Kagi’s paid search and want AI without relying on an advertising-driven search account. It combines Kagi Search with multiple third-party models, optional web access, Kagi lenses, personalized results and file uploads.

Kagi says Assistant data is not used by Kagi or its model providers to train AI models, and that account information is not shared with those providers. Threads are deleted after 24 hours of inactivity by default, subject to account settings. The Assistant is available to Kagi members, while premium models are restricted to the Ultimate plan.
Kagi is not the right recommendation for someone seeking a free, mainstream search engine. Its value is the combination of paid search quality, privacy controls and the ability to choose a model or turn web access off for a conversation.
How AI search engines fail
A citation can be relevant without proving the claim
AI search systems often cite a page that discusses the same subject but does not support every detail in the generated paragraph. Open the source and check the exact wording, publication date and whether the claim came from a primary source or an aggregator.
Freshness is not accuracy
Live searching improves the chance of finding recent information; it does not guarantee that the information is true. For medical, legal, financial and safety-critical questions, use the AI answer to find relevant material, then verify it against an official agency, original research paper, company filing or primary documentation.
Results are personalized
Location, language, account status, browser, plan and rollout status can all change the result. This matters particularly for local businesses, shopping stock, news, prices, AI Mode access and Perplexity quotas.
Best Value
For a reproducible comparison, record the exact prompt, date, country, device, logged-in state, subscription plan and mode used. “I tested Google” is not precise enough if the test actually used an AI Overview, AI Mode or Deep Search.
Some cited pages cannot be fully read
Paywalls, robots.txt instructions and technical failures can prevent an AI system from retrieving the relevant page. A citation may therefore identify a useful source without meaning that the model saw the complete article.
Which AI search engine should you choose?
| If your priority is… | Start with… |
|---|---|
| Maps, products, YouTube, images and everyday questions | Google Search AI Mode |
| A report assembled from many visible sources | Perplexity Research |
| AI summaries plus conventional search links | Bing Copilot Search |
| Minimal profiling and an independent index | Brave Search |
| A follow-up conversation that can search the web | ChatGPT Search |
| Paid search, model selection and privacy controls | Kagi Assistant |
For important work, using two engines is often more reliable than trying to find a single winner. For example, use Perplexity or ChatGPT Search to discover sources, then use Google, Bing or Brave to inspect the original pages and compare conventional results.

FAQ
What is the best AI search engine in 2026?
There is no single winner. Google Search AI Mode is the best general-purpose choice, Perplexity is strongest for citation-led research, Brave is best for privacy, and ChatGPT Search is most convenient for conversational web research.
Is Perplexity better than Google AI Mode?
Perplexity is usually better when you want a research report with prominent source links. Google AI Mode is usually better for broad everyday searches involving Maps, Shopping, YouTube, news, images and other Google services.
Which AI search engine is best for privacy?
Brave Search is the strongest free recommendation because Brave says it does not profile users and operates an independent index. Kagi Assistant is a paid alternative with model selection, optional web access and privacy policies that say user data is not used to train AI models.
Can I trust citations from AI search engines?
Treat citations as leads, not proof. Open the linked page, check whether it actually supports the specific claim, confirm its date and prefer primary sources for medical, legal, financial, safety or rapidly changing information.
The Bottom Line
There is no best AI search engine for every task. Use Google AI Mode for the broadest mainstream search experience, Perplexity for source-oriented research, Bing Copilot Search for an AI-enhanced conventional results page, Brave for privacy and an independent index, ChatGPT Search for conversational searching, and Kagi Assistant if you want a paid, privacy-oriented service with model choice.
Whichever engine you use, select the exact mode deliberately and verify the underlying sources. A fresh answer is not necessarily a correct one.
