NordVPN is the best all-around VPN for most U.S. consumers in 2026 because it combines strong independent privacy assurance, fast modern protocols, broad platform support, useful security features, and a solid reputation for streaming access. It is not the right choice for everyone: Proton VPN is better for privacy transparency and free use, Mullvad minimizes account and payment linkage, Surfshark is the best household value, ExpressVPN is the simplest for beginners and travelers, Private Internet Access suits power users, and Windscribe is the most flexible choice when a free plan or anti-censorship tools matter.
There is no objectively best VPN independent of use case. A VPN that is excellent for a family with 20 devices may be a poor fit for someone who wants to pay cash without supplying an email address. The recommendations below therefore separate privacy, speed, streaming, torrenting, device limits, censorship resistance, usability, and renewal pricing instead of reducing every provider to a single score.
Important testing note: this is an expert-reviewed comparison based on current provider documentation and published testing from Tom’s Guide, TechRadar, RTINGS, WIRED, Security.org, and AV-TEST. It does not claim that iTechGuides personally measured all seven services. Published speed and streaming results are attributed and dated because they are not directly interchangeable.

Current rankings reasonably disagree. Tom’s Guide currently places NordVPN first, followed by Surfshark, ExpressVPN, Proton VPN, and PIA; TechRadar emphasizes NordVPN, Surfshark, Proton VPN, ExpressVPN, and PrivadoVPN Free; RTINGS currently puts Mullvad first; WIRED includes Proton VPN, NordVPN, Windscribe, Surfshark, Mullvad, and ExpressVPN; and Security.org ranks NordVPN, Surfshark, Proton VPN, PIA, and Hotspot Shield among its leading choices. Those differences reflect different test locations, dates, protocols, weighting, and editorial priorities—not necessarily a contradiction. See Tom’s Guide’s current ranking, TechRadar’s comparison, and RTINGS’ testing for their respective methodologies.
Which VPN should you buy?
- Choose NordVPN if you want the strongest general-purpose balance of speed, streaming, security features, and ease of use.
- Choose Proton VPN if open-source apps, external audits, Swiss jurisdiction, and a respectable free plan matter most.
- Choose Surfshark if a family or household needs many simultaneous connections at a low introductory price.
- Choose Mullvad if you want a randomly generated account number, cash payment support, flat pricing, and minimal account linkage.
- Choose ExpressVPN if you want a polished, uncomplicated app and broad geographic coverage, particularly while traveling.
- Choose Private Internet Access if you want extensive settings, open-source software, P2P flexibility, and unlimited connections.
- Choose Windscribe if you need a useful free tier or want protocol options such as Stealth and WStunnel for difficult networks.
1. NordVPN — best overall
Best for: most people who want one mainstream VPN for public Wi-Fi, everyday privacy, streaming, travel, and several personal devices.
Verdict: NordVPN is the strongest all-around recommendation in this group. It does not lead every privacy or price category, but it has the most convincing combination of fast modern connectivity, useful specialty servers, platform coverage, and broad independent editorial support. Tom’s Guide currently names it the best VPN overall after testing privacy, security, speed, streaming, and usability; Security.org also ranks it first, while TechRadar places it ahead of Surfshark, Proton VPN, and ExpressVPN. These are editorial judgments from those publications, not a universal laboratory result. See Tom’s Guide’s review and testing page.

Privacy and security
NordVPN’s NordLynx is its WireGuard-based protocol. Its apps also offer specialty options such as Double VPN, obfuscated servers, P2P servers, and Onion Over VPN, although the exact choices depend on the operating system and app version. A kill switch and leak-protection features are important settings to verify on the specific device you use rather than assuming every platform behaves identically.
NordVPN says Deloitte Lithuania performed its sixth independent no-logs assurance engagement between November 10 and December 12, 2025, with the report issued December 12. The company announced the engagement on February 3, 2026, and says the full report is available through a Nord Account. That is meaningful recurring external scrutiny, but it was a point-in-time assurance engagement—not proof that NordVPN can never log anything under every future configuration. NordVPN also publishes quarterly transparency reports about government inquiries and DMCA requests through its Trust Center.
Speed, streaming, and devices
Published speed results vary sharply by test method. TechRadar recorded roughly 1,256 Mbps for NordVPN in one WireGuard testing round, while Tom’s Guide reports different averages from its own test environment. Neither number should be treated as the speed every subscriber will receive. Distance, ISP, Wi-Fi, congestion, protocol, and the selected server all matter.
NordVPN currently allows 10 simultaneous connections on its Basic, Complete, and Prime plans. Its broad server selection and specialty categories make it a practical streaming and P2P candidate, but no VPN can guarantee permanent access to a particular Netflix library, sports service, or other platform. Streaming companies continually block VPN addresses.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

On the current U.S. pricing page, the Basic two-year offer is displayed as $3.49 per month, billed as $94.23 for the first 27 months. The listed renewal is $139.08 per year; the monthly Basic plan is shown as $14.99 per month. Confirm the final checkout screen because taxes, promotions, plan bundles, and renewal terms can change. See NordVPN’s pricing page.
The interface is more feature-heavy than ExpressVPN’s simpler design. Higher plans also bundle identity monitoring, password-management, storage, and other products; those extras should not inflate a VPN-only value comparison. NordVPN and Surfshark also operate within the broader Nord Security corporate relationship. Nord Security says the companies continued to operate autonomously after their merger agreement, but readers concerned about corporate concentration should know the relationship. See Nord Security’s corporate statement.
Skip NordVPN if: your top priority is paying cash without an email address, or you need unlimited connections rather than a 10-device allowance.
2. Proton VPN — best for privacy and free use
Best for: privacy-conscious beginners who want transparent software, strong external scrutiny, and a genuinely useful free plan.
Verdict: Proton VPN is the best mainstream privacy-first option and the most compelling free VPN in this shortlist. It combines open-source apps, a Swiss base, a no-data-limit free plan, and recurring external no-logs audits. RTINGS currently gives Proton VPN its best VPN with more features position, and TechRadar reports that Proton was among the fastest providers in its October 2025 testing. See RTINGS’ comparison and TechRadar’s current testing.
Free plan and privacy evidence
Proton’s free plan supports one device at a time, medium speed, and randomly selected servers in 10 countries. Proton says it has no data limit, is ad-free, and is not funded by selling browsing data. Free users do not receive the paid plan’s full server choice, streaming access, or P2P access. That makes it suitable for occasional browsing on public Wi-Fi, but less practical for daily video, large downloads, or choosing a precise country.
Proton says all of its apps are open source and that its no-logs policy passed a fifth consecutive annual external audit in 2026. Proton says Securitum found no evidence in the reviewed infrastructure that it logged browsing activity, DNS queries, destination services, traffic contents, or user-identifiable connection metadata. This supports the VPN activity-log claim within the reviewed scope; it does not mean Proton has no account, payment, support, or website data at all. Read the provider’s 2026 audit explanation and no-logs support page.
Proton says it is based in Switzerland and that the current Swiss legal framework does not require its VPN service to retain connection logs. That is Proton’s legal interpretation and should not be presented as absolute immunity from all legal demands.
Paid plan, speed, and limitations
Proton VPN Plus supports up to 10 simultaneous devices. TechRadar’s current price table lists Plus at $9.99 monthly, $3.99 per month on a one-year plan, and $2.99 per month on a two-year plan, with a 30-day money-back guarantee. Verify the live checkout because Proton’s pricing is promotional and region-sensitive; the provider’s pricing page can change.
Proton’s privacy credentials are unusually easy to examine, but its network-size figures appear inconsistently across different pages. Avoid publishing a single server or country total without checking the exact page, plan, and date. The free tier’s location restrictions and lack of guaranteed streaming are the main reasons to choose NordVPN or Surfshark instead.
Skip Proton VPN if: you need unlimited household connections, a precise free server location, or dependable streaming and P2P on a free plan.
3. Surfshark — best for families and budget buyers
Best for: households with many phones, computers, televisions, and tablets, or buyers who want a broad feature bundle at a low first-term price.
Verdict: Surfshark is the best value-oriented household choice because paid plans support unlimited simultaneous connections. Tom’s Guide currently calls it the best cheap option, and Security.org ranks it second while highlighting its budget and feature combination. See Tom’s Guide’s ranking and Security.org’s methodology.

- Incredibly fast 3× 3 6 Stream AC1900 speeds makes the deco capable of providing connectivity for up to 100 devices.
- With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds.
Features and privacy evidence
Surfshark’s Trust Center currently says it operates more than 4,500 servers across 100 countries, uses RAM-only servers, supports WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2, and Dausos, and offers features including multi-hop and rotating IP. These counts and features are subject to change and are not directly comparable with a provider that counts locations or cities instead of servers.
Surfshark says Deloitte verified its no-logs policy in 2023 and again in 2025. Its Trust Center separately lists a 2025 SecuRing infrastructure assessment and a 2026 Cure53 assessment of infrastructure and the Dausos protocol. That distinction matters: a no-logs verification and a technical infrastructure assessment answer different questions. See the Surfshark Trust Center and its 2025 Deloitte announcement.
Price and trade-offs
The current U.S. Starter two-year promotion is displayed as $2.49 per month, billed as $67.23 for the first 27 months. The One tier is shown at $2.79 per month and One+ at $4.49 per month. Surfshark says renewal uses the applicable renewal price, so the advertised monthly equivalent is not the future charge. Eligible direct purchases receive a 30-day money-back guarantee, and some purchases qualify for a seven-day trial with separate device and payment conditions. Check the pricing page before paying.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Surfshark’s low rate requires a long prepaid commitment. The One and One+ tiers add identity and antivirus products that may be irrelevant if you only want a VPN. Unlimited connections also do not mean that an account can be shared without restriction; keep the account secure and read the applicable terms.
Surfshark and NordVPN have a broader corporate relationship through Nord Security. That does not establish a privacy defect, but it is relevant if you want ownership diversity between competing recommendations.
Skip Surfshark if: you specifically want maximum account anonymity, cash payment, or a flat month-to-month price without promotional renewal complexity.
4. Mullvad — best for account and payment privacy
Best for: privacy purists who want to minimize the information connecting a VPN account to their identity.
Verdict: Mullvad is the clearest choice when account and payment privacy matter more than streaming, port forwarding, device count, or discounted long-term pricing. RTINGS currently ranks Mullvad first overall in its own testing and praises its balance of security, privacy, speed, reliability, usability, and value. See RTINGS’ current results.
Why its account model is different
Mullvad generates a random account number instead of requiring an email address and password. It accepts cash as well as cryptocurrency, bank transfer, credit card, PayPal, and other payment methods. The service charges a flat €5 per month including VAT, whether paid monthly or for a year. That structure avoids the typical introductory-price-to-renewal shock and makes the price easy to understand.
Mullvad supports five devices per account and offers a 14-day money-back guarantee. Cash payments are excluded from the refund policy because of anti-money-laundering requirements. See Mullvad’s pricing and payment information.
Technical trade-offs
Mullvad’s app centers on WireGuard. OpenVPN was removed from the app, with users transitioned to WireGuard. That simplifies protocol selection and supports a strong modern default, but it gives users less flexibility than providers that continue to offer OpenVPN, IKEv2, or proprietary alternatives.

It stopped creating new forwarded ports in 2023 and deleted existing ports. This may not matter for ordinary downloads, but it can reduce the number of reachable peers for users who seed heavily or require inbound connections. Use a legally distributable file for torrent testing and follow copyright law.
Mullvad’s live server page showed 576 servers in 50 countries when crawled. That is a dynamic figure, not a permanent network-size claim. Mullvad also published 2026 security work including an Android MASA assessment, a GotaTun audit, and an audit of account and payment services; those are different forms of assurance and should not be collapsed into one generic no-logs label. See the 2026 audit archive.
Skip Mullvad if: you need more than five simultaneous devices, depend on port forwarding, or are buying mainly to unblock streaming libraries.
5. ExpressVPN — best for beginners and travel
Best for: people who want a polished app with a simple location picker, and travelers who value broad geographic coverage and straightforward setup.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Verdict: ExpressVPN is the easiest recommendation for a beginner who does not want to tune protocols and advanced settings. TechRadar currently calls it the best VPN for beginners, and Tom’s Guide includes it among its leading providers. The trade-off is a generally higher regular price and fewer advanced controls than PIA or Mullvad.
Lightway, coverage, and infrastructure
ExpressVPN’s Lightway protocol is available on Android, iOS, Windows, Mac, Linux, and routers. ExpressVPN says Lightway was rewritten in Rust and includes post-quantum protection using ML-KEM. That is a provider claim about the protocol; it should not be generalized into a claim that every part of the service is quantum-proof.
ExpressVPN says its network covers 113 countries and more than 214 server locations, based on its July 7, 2026 update. A location count is not the same as a raw server count, so it should not be compared directly with Surfshark’s server total or Mullvad’s live server count.
The company says its VPN network uses RAM-only TrustedServer technology. KPMG’s 2025 engagement examined TrustedServer and privacy-policy claims as of February 28, 2025, under ISAE (UK) 3000 Type 1. ExpressVPN says the assessment found no identified issues with the tested safeguards against activity logging. RAM-only infrastructure can reduce persistent-storage risk, but it does not by itself prove that an organization never records operational or account data. See ExpressVPN’s KPMG explanation and Trust Center.

Device limits depend on the tier: Basic supports 10 simultaneous connections, Advanced supports 12, and Express Pro supports 14. Do not claim that every ExpressVPN subscription includes 14 devices. Direct website purchases receive a 30-day money-back guarantee for first-time users, but Apple App Store and Google Play purchases are governed by the stores’ refund policies rather than ExpressVPN’s standard direct-purchase guarantee. TechRadar’s latest test round reported lower Lightway speeds than its NordVPN, Surfshark, and Proton VPN results in that particular environment. Other labs may produce different outcomes, so the fair conclusion is that ExpressVPN prioritizes consistency and simplicity rather than automatically being the fastest provider.
ExpressVPN is associated with Kape Technologies. Ownership does not determine whether a provider logs activity, but it belongs in a serious privacy comparison because corporate structure, jurisdiction, and incentives are part of a threat model.
Skip ExpressVPN if: you want the lowest long-term price, maximum configuration, or a refund policy that is identical regardless of where you purchased the subscription.

6. Private Internet Access — best for power users and unlimited connections
Best for: technically inclined users who want granular controls, open-source applications, P2P support, and unlimited simultaneous connections.
Verdict: Private Internet Access, or PIA, is the most configurable option in this group. Tom’s Guide labels it best for power users, while Security.org highlights its settings and unlimited connections. It is a particularly good fit for someone who understands split tunneling, protocol selection, port behavior, and kill-switch trade-offs.
Features and privacy evidence
PIA supports unlimited simultaneous connections, WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2. PIA says its applications and protocols are open source. It also says its no-logs position was tested in U.S. court in 2016 and 2017, and it publishes quarterly transparency reports. Deloitte’s 2024 review examined the server network and management systems. These are useful pieces of evidence, but a court record, a transparency report, a source-code release, and an audit each answer different questions. See PIA’s transparency report and Deloitte audit report.
PIA is based in the United States. That does not prove that it logs VPN activity, but users with a high-risk threat model may prefer a provider in a different legal environment. Jurisdiction is one factor, not a substitute for technical controls or external evidence.
Performance, pricing, and limitations
Security.org measured strong download performance but an average upload-speed drop of more than 84% in its testing. That is a methodology-specific result, but it is important for cloud backups, video uploads, livestreaming, and large file transfers. A provider can feel fast for web browsing while being a poor choice for upload-heavy work.
PIA’s current U.S. page shows $11.95 per month, $3.33 per month for the first year billed as $39.95, and a three-year-plus-three-month promotion at $2.03 per month billed as $79 every three years. The page contains conflicting renewal language in different sections, so inspect the final checkout total and renewal disclosure before purchase. PIA advertises a 30-day money-back guarantee for new subscribers. See PIA’s pricing and refund page.
The settings menu can overwhelm beginners, and VPN addresses can trigger CAPTCHAs or fraud checks on banks, retailers, and account-login pages. Choose a nearby server and avoid changing countries repeatedly.
Skip PIA if: high upload performance or non-U.S. jurisdiction is more important than unlimited connections and configuration.
Recommended Free Tools
7. Windscribe — best free tier and restrictive-network flexibility
Best for: occasional free VPN use, unlimited device installations, and networks that interfere with ordinary VPN protocols.
Verdict: Windscribe is the most interesting free and anti-censorship-oriented choice here. Its free plan is more capable than many unknown ad-supported VPNs, and its Stealth and WStunnel options provide alternatives when a network blocks conventional VPN traffic. WIRED includes Windscribe among its tested services, and TechRadar reports that Windscribe Free performed unusually well among free VPNs in its current speed coverage. Neither result removes the free plan’s data limit.
Free plan and anti-censorship tools
Windscribe provides 2 GB per month by default and increases that to 10 GB per month when the user confirms an email address. Its free Windows product provides 10 country locations and the same core app, encryption, and Firewall feature set as Pro, subject to free-plan limits. Windscribe says its network covers more than 69 countries and 120 cities; check the live service before publication because locations change.
On supported platforms, Windscribe offers WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2, Stealth, WStunnel, and related anti-censorship settings. The current Windows path is Preferences → Connection → Anti-censorship Settings. Stealth wraps VPN traffic to resemble HTTPS, according to Windscribe, while WStunnel uses WebSocket-based routing. These modes can reduce speed or increase latency, and Windscribe explicitly warns that no VPN can guarantee access on every restrictive network. They should not be advertised as a guaranteed solution for China, Iran, Russia, or any other country.
Paid price and drawbacks
Tom’s Guide reports regular Pro pricing of $9 monthly or $5.75 per month on an annual plan. It also reported a 2026 anniversary promotion of $29 upfront for one year—about $2.42 per month—but that is a time-limited promotion unless the current checkout says otherwise. Windscribe’s paid refund terms are less attractive and more restrictive than those of major competitors, so read the current policy before buying. See the Tom’s Guide Windscribe review.
Ten gigabytes is useful for occasional browsing, email, maps, and backup protection on public Wi-Fi, but it disappears quickly with HD video, operating-system downloads, or torrents. Windscribe supports unlimited devices, but unlimited installation or simultaneous use does not make the free data allowance unlimited. Its no-identifying-logs statement should also be read separately from account, billing, abuse-prevention, and operational data disclosures. See Windscribe’s privacy explanation.
Skip Windscribe if: you stream every day, transfer large files, need the simplest possible app, or require a refund policy comparable to the biggest providers.
How a consumer VPN works
A commercial VPN app creates an encrypted connection between your device and a VPN server. The provider’s server then connects to the website or service you requested. In normal operation:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Your device sends traffic through the encrypted tunnel. Someone operating the local coffee-shop Wi-Fi, hotel network, or ordinary ISP connection should have less visibility into the destinations and contents of that traffic than without the VPN. HTTPS still matters because encryption between the VPN server and the website may be separate.
- The destination sees the VPN server’s public IP address. Websites generally see the VPN server rather than your home or mobile IP address.
- Your apparent network location changes. Selecting a server in another country can make websites treat the connection as originating there, subject to VPN detection and other location signals.
- Trust moves to the VPN provider. The VPN can technically observe or handle traffic as it exits its network. The Federal Trade Commission warns that consumers should examine a VPN’s permissions, encryption, privacy policy, and third-party data sharing rather than assuming the app is automatically private. Read the FTC’s VPN guidance.
What a VPN does not hide or fix
A VPN is a privacy and routing tool, not an invisibility cloak or a complete security suite. It does not automatically:

- Protect a compromised phone or computer from malware, keyloggers, or malicious browser extensions.
- Defeat employer or school monitoring software installed on a managed device.
- Guarantee access to every streaming library or prevent every VPN block.
- Replace HTTPS, operating-system updates, antivirus protection, strong passwords, multifactor authentication, or a password manager.
- Make illegal activity legal.
The VPN provider may still have account, billing, support, fraud-prevention, diagnostic, or website-analytics data even when it says it does not retain browsing or connection logs. Also, some network attacks can exploit traffic outside the VPN tunnel or a connection that fails over incorrectly. The VPN’s kill switch and leak behavior therefore matter as much as its advertising claims.
How to judge privacy and no-logs claims
A no-logs policy is not an audit
A no-logs policy is the provider’s statement about what it collects or retains. An external audit or assurance engagement reviews a defined scope at a defined time. It may examine production infrastructure, management systems, app code, controls, configuration, or policy documents. A penetration test, protocol audit, infrastructure assessment, and no-logs assurance engagement are not interchangeable.
When reading an audit claim, ask:
- Who performed the review?
- Was it an audit, assurance engagement, penetration test, app review, infrastructure assessment, or policy examination?
- What systems and time period were in scope?
- Was production infrastructure examined?
- Is the full report public, or available only to account holders?
- Which information categories were assessed—source IP, DNS queries, destinations, traffic content, timestamps, bandwidth, or something else?
- Was it a point-in-time review rather than continuous monitoring?
Current evidence from the seven picks
- NordVPN: Deloitte Lithuania’s sixth no-logs assurance engagement examined systems and supporting operations from November 10 to December 12, 2025. NordVPN says the report is available through a Nord Account.
- Proton VPN: Securitum’s 2026 report is described by Proton as its fifth consecutive annual no-logs audit. Proton says the review found no evidence of the specified browsing, DNS, destination, content, or identifiable connection logs in the assessed infrastructure.
- Surfshark: Deloitte verified the no-logs policy in 2023 and 2025. Separate 2025 and 2026 assessments covered infrastructure and the Dausos protocol.
- ExpressVPN: KPMG’s 2025 ISAE (UK) 3000 Type 1 engagement examined TrustedServer and privacy-policy claims as of February 28, 2025.
- PIA: Deloitte’s 2024 review examined its server network and management systems. PIA also points to 2016 and 2017 U.S. court proceedings and quarterly transparency reports.
- Mullvad: Its strongest differentiator is account and payment minimization: a random account number, optional cash payment, and no required email address. Mullvad also lists recent audits and assessments, including work on Android, GotaTun, and account and payment services.
- Windscribe: It publishes a no-identifying-logs policy and describes its data practices, but the article should not turn that policy into a claim that no account, billing, or operational information exists.
RAM-only servers, promoted by providers including Surfshark, ExpressVPN, and PIA, are a supporting technical control. Volatile memory can reduce the risk of persistent data remaining on a server, but it does not independently prove that an organization never records data elsewhere.
How to read VPN speed and streaming tests
Speed is not a fixed property of a provider. It depends on the test location, ISP, baseline connection, server distance, protocol, time of day, device, and whether the test reports a best result or a median. A 1,000 Mbps result in one lab does not mean a phone on hotel Wi-Fi will achieve 1,000 Mbps.
A credible original test should record the country and ISP, wired or Wi-Fi connection, device and operating system, app version, test date, server location, protocol, baseline speed, VPN speed, latency, connection time, and variation between runs. It should run at least three to five tests and report the median. Nearby servers, distant servers, Europe, and Asia-Pacific produce more useful information than a single local result.
Leak testing should check IPv4, IPv6, DNS, WebRTC, kill-switch behavior after terminating the VPN process, network-adapter changes, recovery after reconnecting, and Wi-Fi-to-cellular switching. One successful check on one browser site is not proof that every app and protocol is leak-free.
Streaming tests should identify the exact service, requested country and library, server, app or browser, number of connection attempts, playback quality, and test date. A service that worked yesterday may be blocked after a streaming provider updates its IP detection. Report an observed result, not a permanent unblocking guarantee.

Best overall: NordVPN
NordVPN offers the best balance for the typical consumer who wants privacy on Wi-Fi, location flexibility, streaming potential, and easy apps. Choose Proton VPN or Mullvad instead if privacy evidence or account minimization outweighs convenience and breadth.
Best privacy: Proton VPN or Mullvad
Choose Proton VPN for open-source apps, recurring no-logs audits, and a usable free tier. Choose Mullvad when avoiding email-based accounts and reducing payment linkage is more important than five-device limits and lack of port forwarding. Neither choice makes you anonymous from accounts, cookies, GPS, or a compromised device.
Best free VPN: Proton VPN Free
Proton is the strongest free recommendation for privacy-focused occasional use because it has no data limit, is ad-free, and says it does not sell browsing data. Its one-device limit, random server selection, and lack of paid streaming and P2P features still matter.

Windscribe is more useful when you value 10 country locations on Windows, unlimited devices, or anti-censorship protocol choices. The 10 GB monthly allowance is not suitable for regular video or large downloads.
Best cheap VPN: Surfshark
Surfshark’s introductory price and unlimited simultaneous connections make it the best household value, provided you understand the prepaid total and renewal price. PIA can be a better value for a technical user who wants settings rather than a polished family-oriented experience.
Best family VPN: Surfshark
Unlimited simultaneous connections are the decisive advantage for households. Confirm that the specific phones, computers, televisions, streaming boxes, and routers you own are supported; installing an app on unlimited devices is not the same as supporting every smart-home device.
Best streaming VPN: NordVPN, with ExpressVPN as the simplest alternative
NordVPN has strong current editorial streaming support and useful specialty servers. ExpressVPN is easier for beginners and travelers. Streaming access changes frequently, so test the services you actually use and keep the subscription’s refund deadline in mind. No provider can guarantee every library indefinitely.

PIA is attractive for unlimited connections and configuration; NordVPN offers P2P-oriented features and a simpler mainstream experience. Use only lawful downloads. Mullvad supports P2P but lacks port forwarding, which matters to heavy seeders and users who need inbound peer connections.
Best gaming VPN: no universal winner
A VPN normally adds a routing step and can increase latency or jitter. It may help in an unusual case where the VPN avoids poor ISP routing or reduces exposure to certain attacks, but do not buy one expecting lower ping automatically. Test the nearest server, latency, jitter, and stability for the specific game and ISP.
Best travel VPN: ExpressVPN or NordVPN
ExpressVPN’s simple apps, Lightway support, broad location coverage, and router availability make it convenient for travelers. NordVPN is the stronger all-around alternative if streaming and security features matter more than simplicity. Test the VPN before departure, especially if you will rely on it on a hotel, workplace, school, or national network.
Best for restrictive networks: Windscribe, with no guarantee
Windscribe’s Stealth and WStunnel options are specifically designed for difficult networks. They can be slower and may still be blocked. Configure and test them before traveling; do not assume that a provider will work in every country or on every hotel, school, workplace, or national network.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBest for routers, Linux, Apple TV, and Fire TV: verify the exact platform
Device support is not transferable. A provider with a Windows and iPhone app may not support a particular router, Apple TV, Fire TV model, game console, or smart TV. ExpressVPN explicitly lists Lightway on routers and Linux among supported platforms, while other providers’ availability varies by app and installation method. Before purchasing, check the provider’s current support page for the exact model and operating system. If a device is unsupported, router installation or a supported gateway may be required.

Free VPNs versus paid VPNs
| Factor | Reputable free plan | Paid VPN |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | No subscription payment | Monthly or prepaid fee, often with an introductory rate |
| Data | Often capped; Proton says its free plan has no data limit, while Windscribe allows 2 GB or 10 GB per month | Usually unlimited data |
| Locations | Often limited or randomly assigned | Broad manual server choice |
| Streaming and P2P | Often blocked or restricted | More likely to be supported, but never guaranteed |
| Privacy | Depends heavily on the provider; avoid unknown ad-supported apps | Still requires policy and audit scrutiny |
| Devices and support | Commonly limited | Higher limits and more formal support |
A free VPN is not automatically unsafe, and a paid VPN is not automatically trustworthy. The FTC warns that some free VPN applications may fail to encrypt all traffic or share information with advertisers. That warning is why Proton VPN Free and Windscribe Free should be treated differently from an anonymous app with unclear ownership, excessive permissions, or a vague privacy policy. The practical rule is simple: choose a reputable free tier for occasional use, but pay for unlimited data, precise locations, streaming, P2P, and support.
Price and renewal warnings
The low monthly equivalent shown in VPN advertising usually represents a long prepaid term, sometimes with extra months. It is not necessarily the amount charged at checkout and is rarely the renewal price.
| Provider | Current price snapshot | What to check before payment |
|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | Basic two-year offer: $3.49/month, $94.23 for the first 27 months; listed renewal $139.08/year; monthly Basic $14.99 | First-term total, renewal, taxes, and bundled plan |
| Surfshark | Starter two-year offer: $2.49/month, $67.23 for the first 27 months; One $2.79/month; One+ $4.49/month | Applicable renewal price and seven-day trial conditions |
| Proton VPN | TechRadar lists $9.99 monthly, $3.99/month annual, and $2.99/month two-year | Live checkout, currency, taxes, and 30-day guarantee |
| Mullvad | €5/month including VAT, regardless of term | 14-day refund excludes cash payments; currency conversion |
| ExpressVPN | Tier-based device limits: Basic 10, Advanced 12, Pro 14 | Current promotional price and purchase channel; app stores follow their own refund rules |
| PIA | $11.95 monthly; $3.33/month first year billed as $39.95; $2.03/month three-year-plus-three-month offer billed as $79 | Final checkout and renewal language, which the current page presents inconsistently |
| Windscribe | Tom’s Guide reports $9 monthly and $5.75/month annual; a 2026 promotion was $29 for one year | Whether the promotion is still active and the restrictive refund terms |
Before paying, confirm the billing frequency, first-term total, renewal amount, taxes, number of simultaneous connections, refund deadline, and whether cancellation stops renewal or merely removes auto-renewal. If you purchased through Apple or Google, review the store’s subscription and refund rules; they may not match a direct website purchase.
Commercial VPNs versus business VPNs
The services in this article are commercial privacy VPNs. They primarily route your internet traffic through a provider’s servers, hide your home IP from destination websites, and reduce visibility for the local network or ISP.
A business VPN is different. An employer may require a corporate VPN to authenticate employees and connect them to internal applications, file shares, or private systems. It may be monitored and managed by the employer. A consumer VPN cannot substitute for your company’s required access method, and using a personal VPN on a managed work device does not necessarily hide activity from employer security software.
Bottom-line buying advice
Start with your actual priority rather than the biggest server number or lowest advertised price. For a general household, buy NordVPN if its renewal terms suit your budget. Select Proton VPN for transparent privacy and the best mainstream free tier; Mullvad for minimal account and payment linkage; Surfshark for many household devices; ExpressVPN for the simplest travel experience; PIA for advanced controls and unlimited connections; or Windscribe when free use and restrictive-network flexibility are more important than unlimited data.
Whichever provider you choose, install the official app, enable the kill switch where appropriate, test DNS and IPv6 behavior, verify the devices you actually own, and save the renewal date. A VPN can reduce IP exposure and protect traffic on untrusted networks, but it cannot replace secure accounts, HTTPS, device updates, malware protection, or sensible privacy habits.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are VPNs legal?
Using a VPN is legal in many countries, but laws and restrictions vary by jurisdiction. A VPN does not make fraud, copyright infringement, unauthorized access, or other illegal activity lawful. Check the rules where you live and where you travel.
Can my ISP see what I do when I use a VPN?
A properly working VPN generally prevents the ISP from seeing the specific websites and services your traffic reaches, although the ISP can usually see that you are connected to a VPN and may observe connection timing or volume. The VPN provider becomes the party you must trust with the traffic as it exits its network.
Can a VPN be tracked?
A VPN can reduce exposure of your home IP address, but it does not stop tracking through logged-in accounts, cookies, browser fingerprinting, GPS, device identifiers, or malware. Websites can also detect and block known VPN IP addresses.
Can a VPN unblock Netflix or other streaming services?
Sometimes, but access is not guaranteed or permanent. Streaming services block VPN addresses and may use account, payment, DNS, and device signals. Results depend on the service, country, server, app, and date. NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and Surfshark are sensible mainstream candidates, but test the platform you actually use.
Which VPN is best for torrenting?
PIA and NordVPN are strong general recommendations for lawful P2P use because of their feature sets and configuration options. Mullvad supports P2P but does not offer port forwarding, which can matter to heavy seeders. Use a legally distributable file for testing and follow copyright law.
Do free VPNs sell your data?
Some free VPN apps may share information with advertisers or fail to encrypt all traffic, which is why the FTC recommends checking permissions and privacy policies. Reputable free tiers such as Proton VPN Free and Windscribe Free publish more substantial privacy information, but you should still distinguish VPN activity data from account, billing, support, and operational data.
Does a VPN slow down internet access?
It can. Encryption, the extra routing step, server distance, congestion, and protocol choice may reduce speed or increase latency. Nearby servers and modern protocols usually help, but gaming, video calls, uploads, and large downloads should be tested on your own connection.
Should I leave my VPN on all the time?
You can leave it enabled for everyday privacy and untrusted Wi-Fi, provided important sites and apps work normally. Temporarily disconnect or select a nearby server if a bank, workplace, streaming service, or game blocks the connection. Keep the kill switch behavior in mind because it may interrupt internet access when the VPN disconnects.
Can I use a VPN for banking?
Yes, but a VPN may trigger fraud checks, CAPTCHAs, or login challenges, especially when you frequently change countries. Use a nearby server, avoid rapid location changes, keep multifactor authentication enabled, and disconnect temporarily if your bank rejects the VPN connection. A VPN is not a replacement for HTTPS or a trusted, updated device.
What is WireGuard?
WireGuard is a modern VPN protocol designed to establish encrypted tunnels with comparatively simple, efficient code. Providers implement and configure it differently, so the name alone does not guarantee identical speed, privacy, or reliability across services.
What is a VPN kill switch?
A kill switch blocks or interrupts internet traffic when the VPN tunnel drops, reducing the chance that traffic briefly leaves through your normal connection. Check its behavior after terminating the VPN process, changing networks, and reconnecting; implementations differ across apps.
What are split tunneling and obfuscation?
Split tunneling lets selected apps or destinations use the VPN while others use the ordinary connection. Obfuscation attempts to make VPN traffic less recognizable to a restrictive network. Both features are platform-dependent. Obfuscation can reduce speed and cannot guarantee access through every censorship system.
Is a VPN better than Tor?
They solve different problems. A commercial VPN is usually simpler and faster for changing your apparent IP and protecting traffic from a local network. Tor routes traffic through multiple volunteer relays and offers a different anonymity model, usually with more friction and lower speed. Neither protects a compromised device or makes logged-in activity anonymous.
Can I install a VPN on a router?
Some providers support compatible routers or dedicated router hardware, but support varies by model, firmware, protocol, and provider. Router installation can cover devices without native VPN apps, while making troubleshooting and choosing exceptions more difficult. Verify the exact router and device support before subscribing.
What happens when a VPN subscription renews?
Unless auto-renewal is canceled under the provider’s terms, the saved payment method is normally charged at the applicable renewal rate, which may be higher than the introductory price. Record the renewal date, inspect the account’s billing settings, and keep confirmation of cancellation. App-store subscriptions must generally be managed through the store.
The Bottom Line
For most buyers, choose NordVPN. Choose Proton VPN for privacy transparency or free use, Mullvad for minimal account linkage, Surfshark for unlimited household connections, ExpressVPN for simplicity, PIA for advanced configuration, and Windscribe for a useful free tier or restrictive networks. Compare the total first-term charge and renewal price, verify support for your actual devices, and remember that a VPN reduces IP and local-network exposure—it does not make you anonymous.
