After asking ChatGPT and Gemini for everyday purchases that might not justify their cost, writer Elton Jones says he stopped buying five categories: bagged salad kits, pre-shredded cheese, single-purpose kitchen gadgets, miniature toiletries, and static dusting wands. He replaced them with whole greens assembled at home, block cheese grated as needed, tools he already owned, refillable bottles, and microfiber cloths.

That list is useful as a spending checklist, not as proof that these products are bad for everyone. The underlying article is a personal experiment rather than a controlled price, durability, food-waste, or cleaning-performance test. Your household size, local prices, storage space, time, and existing equipment determine whether the substitute is actually better.

What did the ChatGPT-and-Gemini list actually establish?

The source article, published by Tom’s Guide on September 15, 2026, describes a prompt about “7 unconventional everyday purchases” and reports five categories produced by combining two chatbot responses. Jones then described purchases he had stopped making and the alternatives he uses. The result is best read as a set of questions to ask before your next shopping trip, not a universal ranking of value.

No controlled basket comparison, repeatable time study, durability test, or independently sourced price database accompanied the list. Even the travel-size toiletries estimate of “200% to 400%” more per ounce is presented without a named study, sample, geography, brands, or calculation method. Treat it as an unsupported estimate attributed to the article, not a statistic you can apply to every store.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

A fair comparison uses the amount you actually use, not just the package price. Include preparation time, cleanup, storage, spoilage, the frequency of repeat purchases, and whether a tool you already own can do the job. The following sections apply that test to each category.

Category Jones stopped buying Reported substitute What is established What remains personal or unverified
Bagged salad kits Whole greens and a homemade mix The kits combine greens, dressing, and toppings; the article recommends assembling a salad at home. No receipt-level price, shelf-life, or waste comparison.
Pre-shredded cheese Block cheese grated when needed The article says grating a block takes little time. No universal price or taste advantage is demonstrated.
Single-purpose gadgets A knife or appliance already in the kitchen Examples include egg slicers, avocado slicers, banana cutters, strawberry hullers, and dedicated quesadilla makers. No cost-per-use or durability study.
Travel-size toiletries Reusable bottles filled from products you own The article recommends decanting existing products. The 200%–400% markup estimate has no identified source; travel-rule compliance depends on the exact container and current rules.
Static dusting wands Multipurpose microfiber cloths Jones reports using a four-pack bought for under $10. That was a personal, dated purchase; no controlled test proves one cleaning method always performs better.

Are bagged salad kits worth buying?

They can be worth the convenience when you will eat the entire kit promptly, but the kit is not automatically cheaper or less wasteful than buying ingredients separately. The practical question is whether the dressing and toppings prevent you from using produce you would otherwise leave unused.

What the kit pays for

A kit bundles washing, portioning, dressing, and toppings into one purchase. That can reduce decisions and preparation on a busy day. It can also create a fixed portion that does not match your household: a single person may discard leftovers, while a family may finish the package before it spoils.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to build the alternative

  1. Buy the quantity of greens your household will use during its normal shopping cycle.
  2. Add toppings you already keep, such as vegetables, beans, nuts, or a dressing you like, rather than buying a complete set for one recipe.
  3. Compare the amount you eat with the amount discarded from both options over several purchases.
  4. Include the value of your preparation time and the cost of any ingredients bought only for the homemade mix.

Food-safety details that matter

USDA guidance says produce labeled “pre-washed” or “ready-to-eat” can be used without washing again. Washing a label does not remove the need for clean hands, utensils, and work surfaces. Cut produce should be refrigerated promptly in covered containers or frozen, and it should not remain at room temperature for more than two hours.

Those instructions apply to a homemade salad as well as a kit after it has been opened or cut. Home assembly is therefore not automatically safer; safe handling and temperature control determine the risk.

When the kit is the sensible choice

  • You routinely eat the full kit before the greens or toppings deteriorate.
  • You are paying for a time-saving meal component and would otherwise skip vegetables.
  • You do not already have the ingredients and would buy more than you can use.

Is pre-shredded cheese a waste of money?

Not necessarily. Jones’s argument is that grating a block takes little time, so a block may make more sense when you use cheese regularly and already own a grater. The article does not establish a universal price, flavor, or performance advantage for block cheese.

Compare the formats on your own use

Consideration Block cheese Pre-shredded cheese
Preparation Requires grating when needed. Ready to measure and add.
Equipment Needs a suitable grater; a box grater is one option. No grating tool required.
Storage Follow the package instructions for the block. Shredded cheese must be refrigerated; follow its package instructions.
Value evidence in the source No universal savings or taste result established. No universal savings or taste result established.
Best fit Frequent users who can grate a quantity they will use. People who value immediate convenience or use small amounts infrequently.

A simple break-even check

  1. Write down the price and net weight of the block and the shredded package you normally buy.
  2. Convert each to a price per ounce or gram.
  3. Estimate the minutes needed to grate the amount you actually use, including washing the grater.
  4. Account for any block left unused and any shredded cheese discarded after opening.

The lower unit price is not automatically the lower household cost if a block dries out before you use it or if grating discourages you from cooking. Conversely, paying for ready-to-use cheese may be unnecessary when you grate a large amount at once and use it promptly. Keep the food refrigerated as directed on its package; the source does not support a broad safety claim that one format is superior.

Do single-purpose kitchen gadgets save money?

They can when a gadget solves a task you perform often and does it more safely or consistently than your existing tools. Jones’s rule is more limited: before buying an egg slicer, avocado slicer, banana cutter, strawberry huller, or dedicated quesadilla maker, check whether a knife or appliance you already own performs the same basic task adequately.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

The three-question test

  1. Frequency: How many times will you use the gadget in a normal month, not in the month you first buy it?
  2. Substitute: Can an existing knife, cutting board, pan, or appliance do the task with acceptable results?
  3. Friction: Will washing, storing, and finding the gadget take less effort than using the substitute?

If the answer to the first question is “rarely” and the second is “yes,” the gadget is mainly a convenience purchase. That does not make it wrong; it means the benefit is saved effort, not a demonstrated financial return.

When a dedicated tool can be reasonable

  • You prepare the same food frequently enough that the saved minutes accumulate.
  • A physical limitation makes the existing tool difficult or unsafe to use.
  • The gadget replaces a more expensive service or prevents repeated food waste.
  • You have a clear storage location and will not buy it for a single recipe.

Because the source supplies no durability or cost-per-use data, avoid claiming that every one-task gadget is poorly made or overpriced. The defensible conclusion is that existing equipment should be checked before adding another item to a crowded drawer.

Are travel-size toiletries and miniature skincare products overpriced?

Small containers can be useful for a short trip, but buying a new miniature version of every product may cost more over time than reusing containers you already own. The article recommends filling reusable travel bottles from your normal toiletries. Its “200% to 400%” more-per-ounce figure is not backed by an identified study, so use your own shelf prices rather than treating that range as a rule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Calculate the real cost

  1. Record the full-size product’s price and volume.
  2. Record the miniature product’s price and volume.
  3. Divide price by volume for each, using the same unit.
  4. Include the purchase price of reusable bottles and how many trips you expect them to serve.
  5. Count product left in a nearly empty miniature, leakage, and containers that must be replaced.

A refillable bottle becomes less economical if it leaks, is hard to clean, or is discarded after one trip. A miniature can be rational when you need a small amount, cannot safely transport the original package, or rarely travel. The decision is about your use pattern, not a universal ban on small sizes.

Do not assume a universal travel approval label

The source article uses “TSA-approved” language, but that wording has not been checked against current official travel rules or the dimensions of any particular bottle. Container limits and screening requirements can change and can depend on the exact item and journey. Check the current rule for your departure airport and carrier before filling a bottle, and keep the product in a clearly identified, leak-resistant container.

Do static dusting wands work better than microfiber cloths?

Jones says inexpensive static dusters can move dust around and reports replacing them with multipurpose microfiber household cloths. That observation is personal, not a controlled comparison of every duster, surface, or cleaning technique. A cloth may be a practical alternative when you already have one and can wash it between uses.

Use the cloth deliberately

  1. Remove loose clutter so the cloth can contact the surface.
  2. Use the cloth on a manageable area rather than dragging dust across the entire room.
  3. Fold it to expose a clean section as dust accumulates.
  4. Follow the surface manufacturer’s instructions, especially on delicate finishes and electronics.
  5. Place the used cloth in laundry rather than returning it to a clean-supply drawer.

USDA household guidance recommends cleaning with warm, soapy water and washing cleaning towels frequently on a hot cycle. That is hygiene guidance, not proof that microfiber outperforms every wand. A duster can still be convenient for high, narrow, or fragile surfaces if it captures dust adequately and is cleaned or replaced as directed.

What the reported price does—and does not—mean

The article says Jones bought a four-pack of multipurpose microfiber cloths for under $10. That was his own purchase at a particular time and retailer; it is not a current national price or a guarantee of performance. Compare the cloth’s purchase price, laundering effort, usable lifespan, and the surfaces you clean before deciding.

How can you decide whether to ditch one of these products?

Run a short household audit instead of relying on a headline or a chatbot recommendation. The goal is to measure your actual consumption and effort once or twice, then make a repeatable choice.

  1. Choose one category. Do not change five routines at once; you will not know which change helped.
  2. Record the current option. Note package price, usable amount, leftovers, preparation time, storage, and cleanup.
  3. Price the substitute. Use the same store and shopping trip when possible, and include any container or tool you must buy.
  4. Track waste. Record food or product discarded, not just what remains in the package.
  5. Test convenience honestly. If the substitute makes you skip a meal, leave a surface dirty, or abandon a trip plan, its nominal savings may not matter.
  6. Recheck after several uses. One unusually busy week or one unusually low sale price can distort the decision.
Question Why it changes the answer
How much do I actually use? A lower package price is irrelevant if most of the contents are discarded.
Do I own a substitute already? A knife, grater, bottle, or cloth changes the replacement cost.
How much time does the alternative take? Preparation and cleanup are part of the trade-off.
Can I store and maintain it? Refrigeration, covered containers, laundering, and leak prevention affect usable value.
Is the evidence personal or measured? An anecdote can suggest a test but cannot establish a universal winner.

What is the practical verdict on the five purchases?

None of the five categories is automatically a bad buy. The strongest shared lesson is to identify what you are paying for: bundled preparation, immediate availability, specialized convenience, portability, or a quick cleaning routine. Keep the product when that benefit prevents waste or helps you complete an important task; switch when an existing tool or refillable item delivers the same result with less unused product and no unacceptable extra effort.

Jones’s substitutions are therefore starting points: assemble salad from quantities you will eat, grate block cheese when the time and cleanup make sense, test existing kitchen tools before buying another gadget, refill travel containers only after checking current travel requirements, and use clean, washable cloths where they suit the surface. Your own price-per-use and waste records are more reliable than an unsupported universal percentage or a single personal purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did the article mention seven purchases but list only five?

The reported prompt asked for seven unconventional purchases, but the two chatbot responses were combined into five categories in the resulting article. The number seven is prompt wording, not evidence that two categories were omitted from a verified ranking.

How can I compare a travel bottle with a miniature product if I travel only once a year?

Include the bottle’s purchase price, expected number of trips, cleaning time, and any replacement after leakage. A miniature may be sensible for very infrequent travel even when its unit price is higher, because you avoid storing and maintaining another container.

What should I do with a microfiber cloth after cleaning a kitchen surface?

Separate used cloths from clean ones and wash cleaning towels frequently on a hot cycle, following the household-cleaning guidance cited in the article. Do not put a visibly dirty cloth back into a drawer with unused cloths.

Can a single-use kitchen gadget be justified for accessibility reasons?

Yes. If the dedicated design lets someone prepare food more safely or independently than a knife or standard appliance, its value is functional rather than purely financial. The source’s rule is a spending check, not a judgment about tools that meet an accessibility need.
