Yes—text-to-speech (TTS) can read webpages, PDFs, app text, or documents aloud while you walk, cook, take notes, or work in another app. The right choice depends less on a universal “best” voice than on your device and the material you need to hear. Android Select to Speak is designed for selected screen content and background playback; iPhone Accessibility Reader turns text in supported apps into a full-screen listening view; Microsoft Edge Read aloud handles webpages and PDFs; and NaturalReader Personal accepts uploads, pasted text, and webpage URLs. This guide explains what each option can read, how to start it, where controls and offline limits apply, and which fit to choose without pretending that the available evidence proves a single winner.

Which text-to-speech app can read to me while I multitask?

Start with the feature already built into your device or browser. Android Select to Speak can continue reading while you switch apps or scroll; Edge Read aloud can play supported webpages and PDFs while you do other tasks; iPhone Accessibility Reader can read text from supported apps in a dedicated reader; and NaturalReader can turn uploaded files, pasted text, and webpage URLs into audio. No cited source provides a controlled comparison of voice quality, privacy, accessibility performance, or value, so treat this as a fit decision rather than a ranking.

Option Best-supported material Multitasking behavior Controls and limits to check
Android Select to Speak Readable text and image descriptions selected on the screen Can read in the background while you switch apps or scroll Only works where text is exposed as readable content; some mobile browsers are unsupported; steps vary by Android version
iPhone Accessibility Reader Text in supported apps, shown in a full-screen reader Autoplay and playback controls let you listen after opening the reader iOS release, language, region, and device determine availability; advanced formatting, summarization, and translation features require Apple Intelligence on supported devices with iOS 27 or later
Microsoft Edge Read aloud Supported webpages and PDFs Designed for listening while performing other tasks Voice choices are reduced offline; mobile behavior varies by device, market, and browser version
NaturalReader Personal Supported PDF, Word, and EPUB uploads, pasted text, and webpage URLs Playback can continue using its web or mobile app while you multitask Most basic features are free according to its July 13, 2026 help page; extended listening, MP3 conversion, OCR, full Text Filter controls, and AI features require a subscription

The table describes capabilities documented by the platform or vendor, not independent testing. If your priority is a particular voice, privacy policy, reading accuracy, or price, verify that provider’s current documentation before committing.

How should I choose a text-to-speech option for multitasking?

Choose by the source of your reading material first, then verify background playback, controls, and offline behavior. This avoids installing an app that cannot access the content you actually need.

If most of your reading is on an Android screen

Try Select to Speak. It is suited to text already visible in an app, browser, message, or document and can also describe images when the system exposes a description. It is the most direct route when you want to select a portion of the current screen rather than import a file.

If you read in Safari or other iPhone apps

Use Accessibility Reader when it is available on your iPhone. Its full-screen presentation can reduce visual clutter and lets you adjust fonts, layout, and background colors while listening. Confirm the feature on your actual iOS release because Apple’s guide is version-specific and availability can depend on language and region.

If your source is a website or PDF

Edge Read aloud is the natural first test. It is built into the browser, offers paragraph skipping and speed controls, and can read PDFs as well as webpages. Reading mode can simplify supported page layouts before playback.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you need uploads, OCR, or a single library for mixed files

NaturalReader Personal covers supported PDF, Word, and EPUB files, pasted text, and webpage URLs through its web and mobile apps. Check whether the exact feature you need is in its basic tier: the vendor lists OCR, extended listening, MP3 conversion, full Text Filter controls, and AI features as subscription functions.

If offline listening is essential

Check the implementation on your device rather than assuming all voices work without a connection. Microsoft says Edge Read aloud works online and offline but offers fewer voice choices offline. The cited Android, Apple, and NaturalReader material does not establish identical offline behavior across every device, file type, or app.

How do I use Android Select to Speak while I do other things?

Enable Select to Speak in Android accessibility settings, invoke its shortcut, select readable content, and start playback. Google explicitly documents that you can switch apps or scroll while the reading continues in the background.

Set up the feature

  1. Open Settings and go to Accessibility.
  2. Find Select to Speak and turn on its shortcut. The exact location and wording can differ by Android version and manufacturer.
  3. If Select to Speak is missing, update or install Android Accessibility Suite, which Google identifies as the package that supplies the feature on supported devices.

Start a reading session

  1. Open the page, message, document, or other screen containing the text.
  2. Use the accessibility shortcut you enabled, then select the text or area you want read.
  3. Press play. Use the on-screen controls to pause, resume, skip, or change speaking speed.
  4. Leave the reading overlay running, switch to another app, or scroll as needed. Background playback is the documented multitasking behavior.

Know what Select to Speak cannot select

The feature depends on text being exposed to Android as readable content. Text drawn inside an image, a protected viewer, or an app that does not expose its text may not be selectable. Google also warns that Select to Speak might not work in every mobile browser, so test the specific browser and page before relying on it for a long session.

How do I listen to webpages and PDFs in Microsoft Edge?

Open the supported page or PDF in Edge, choose Read aloud, and use the playback bar to control pace, voice, and position. Microsoft describes the feature specifically for listening while performing other tasks and says it can operate online or offline.

Read a webpage

  1. Open the webpage in Microsoft Edge.
  2. Open the browser’s menu and choose Read aloud. On pages where it is offered, you can also enter reading mode first to simplify the layout.
  3. Use play and pause, skip between paragraphs, choose an available voice, and adjust the reading speed.
  4. Move to another task while playback continues. Keep Edge available if your device or power-management settings pause background audio.

Read a PDF

  1. Open the PDF in Edge’s built-in viewer.
  2. Start Read aloud from the viewer or browser menu.
  3. Use the same playback, paragraph navigation, voice, and pace controls where the document exposes readable text.

Understand online and offline differences

Microsoft says Read aloud works both online and offline, but fewer voice choices are available without a connection. Edge mobile availability is documented for iOS and Android, yet Microsoft cautions that functionality can vary by device, market, and browser version. If a voice disappears after you lose connectivity, that is an expected limitation rather than proof that playback itself is broken.

How do I use Accessibility Reader on an iPhone?

Open Accessibility Reader from the iPhone’s accessibility controls when reading text in a supported app, then use its full-screen playback and presentation settings. Because Apple’s instructions are tied to a specific iOS guide, confirm the labels and availability on the iOS version installed on the phone.

Open the reader and begin playback

  1. Open the app containing the text you want to hear.
  2. Invoke Accessibility Reader through the accessibility control described in your iOS release. If the option is absent, check Settings > Accessibility and your iPhone’s software-update information.
  3. Let the reader present the text full-screen, then tap play. Enable autoplay if you want the reading to begin automatically when the reader opens.
  4. Use pause, skip, and speaking-rate controls to move through the material while you perform another activity.

Adjust the reading presentation

Accessibility Reader can customize fonts, layout, and background colors. Those settings are useful when you want to follow along visually, reduce distracting page design, or make the text easier to track while listening.

Separate core reading from Apple Intelligence features

Apple’s guide says some formatting, summarization, and translation functions require Apple Intelligence on supported devices running iOS 27 or later, with availability dependent on language and region. Do not assume those features are present merely because the basic reader is available; they are separate requirements.

What can NaturalReader Personal read, and which features cost extra?

NaturalReader Personal is the broad-input option in this guide: its web and mobile apps can read supported PDF, Word, and EPUB uploads, pasted text, and webpage URLs. The vendor’s help page, published July 13, 2026, says most basic features are free, while several advanced functions require a subscription.

Import or paste material

  1. Open the NaturalReader web or mobile app.
  2. Upload a supported PDF, Word, or EPUB file, paste text into the reader, or provide a webpage URL.
  3. Start playback and adjust speed, pauses, volume, timer, or pronunciation edits as needed.

Check the feature gate before subscribing

The vendor lists extended listening, MP3 conversion, OCR, full Text Filter controls, and AI features as subscription functions. “Most basic features are free” does not specify a universal price or plan duration, so review the current terms shown for your country and platform before paying. These are vendor feature statements, not an independent assessment of voice quality or recognition accuracy.

When OCR matters

OCR can be relevant when a PDF is a scan rather than selectable text, but the cited documentation only establishes that OCR is a subscription feature; it does not quantify accuracy for particular scans or languages. If the document is confidential, also review the provider’s current privacy terms before uploading it.

What playback controls should a multitasking reader expect?

All four documented options provide some combination of play/pause and speed control, but the exact control set depends on the platform. Plan for the controls you actually use instead of assuming every app has the same navigation model.

  • Speed: Android, Apple, and Edge documentation explicitly mention speaking-rate or pace adjustment. NaturalReader lists speed controls as well.
  • Navigation: Edge provides paragraph skipping; Apple provides skipping; Android exposes playback controls after selection. NaturalReader lists pauses and a timer in addition to basic playback.
  • Voice selection: Edge offers voice choices, with fewer available offline. The other sources document speech controls but do not establish a cross-provider count or quality ranking.
  • Pronunciation: NaturalReader lists pronunciation editing, which can help with names or technical terms in imported text.
  • Timers: NaturalReader lists timers; the cited Android, Apple, and Edge summaries do not establish an equivalent timer control.

Can these tools keep reading when I leave the original app?

Android Select to Speak explicitly supports background reading while you switch apps or scroll. Edge is described for listening while doing other tasks, although mobile and device behavior can vary. Apple’s reader provides autoplay and playback controls, but the cited guide does not promise identical background behavior across every iOS app. NaturalReader’s web and mobile apps provide playback, yet the supplied vendor material does not establish a universal background guarantee for every operating-system configuration.

For dependable multitasking, test a short passage before starting a long session. Lock the screen, switch to the app you will use, and confirm that audio continues; battery-saver settings, browser restrictions, Bluetooth changes, or the source app itself can interrupt playback even when the TTS feature supports multitasking in principle.

Do I need headphones or a special device?

No cited source identifies a required physical accessory. A phone, tablet, or computer that supports the relevant feature is the documented prerequisite; headphones are an optional privacy or convenience choice, not a requirement established by these sources. A newer device may be needed for a particular iOS feature such as Apple Intelligence, but that is a software and hardware eligibility condition for those advanced functions, not a general TTS accessory requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much do multitasking text-to-speech options cost?

The supplied official material does not provide a comparable price table for Android, Apple, Edge, and NaturalReader. Built-in feature documentation explains capability rather than a separate app charge, while NaturalReader’s July 13, 2026 help page describes feature gating without publishing a universal price in the cited material.

Cost question What is established What you still need to verify
Android Select to Speak Google documents it as an Android accessibility feature; some devices may require Android Accessibility Suite Your device’s Android version, manufacturer implementation, and any app-store requirements
iPhone Accessibility Reader Apple documents it as an iPhone accessibility feature Availability on your iOS release, language, region, and whether advanced Apple Intelligence functions apply
Edge Read aloud Microsoft documents it as an Edge capability for webpages and PDFs Device, market, browser version, and online/offline voice availability
NaturalReader Personal Most basic features are described as free; extended listening, MP3 conversion, OCR, full Text Filter controls, and AI features require a subscription Current plan names, prices, limits, renewal terms, and regional availability

What should I do when text-to-speech will not read a page or file?

Diagnose the input before changing voices or reinstalling an app. Most failures in the documented scenarios come from unsupported text, version differences, or a playback process being stopped in the background.

  • Scanned PDF produces silence: Use an OCR-capable workflow. NaturalReader lists OCR as a subscription feature; Edge and built-in accessibility readers do not automatically gain OCR merely because a PDF opens.
  • Read aloud is missing in Edge: Confirm that the page or PDF is open in Edge, update the browser, and check whether the mobile version in your market exposes the feature. Microsoft says mobile availability and functionality vary.
  • Only some voices appear offline: Reconnect to the internet or choose from the voices available locally. Microsoft documents fewer voice choices offline.
  • Apple reader is unavailable: Verify the iOS version, language, region, and device eligibility. Apple’s advanced formatting, summarization, and translation requirements are separate from basic reading.
  • Playback stops after switching apps: Re-test with a short passage, disable restrictive battery or background-audio settings for the browser or reader, and check Bluetooth output. The platform documentation supports multitasking in different ways but does not guarantee identical behavior on every device.

Which option fits common multitasking scenarios?

Use the scenario that most closely matches your routine, then validate one representative document before adopting it.

Listening to an article while taking notes

Use Edge for an article opened in the browser, or Select to Speak if the article is on an Android screen and the browser exposes its text. Edge offers paragraph navigation, which is useful when you need to pause and return to a specific section.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Following a recipe or instructions while moving around

Select to Speak can read visible Android instructions while you scroll. On iPhone, Accessibility Reader can present the text in a less cluttered full-screen layout; test whether the app’s text is supported before starting.

Listening to a long PDF

Try Edge when the PDF contains selectable text. If the PDF is image-based, an OCR-capable tool such as NaturalReader may be necessary, with OCR listed as a subscription feature in its current help documentation.

Combining books, office files, and copied passages

NaturalReader is the documented option with the broadest set of input methods in this guide: supported uploads, pasted text, and webpage URLs. Confirm file compatibility and subscription limits for the formats and listening time you expect.

Reading accessibility descriptions as well as words

Android Select to Speak can read image descriptions when they are available to the system. The cited Apple, Edge, and NaturalReader summaries do not establish an equivalent image-description workflow, so choose Android when that specific capability is central to your use case.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What are the privacy and quality trade-offs?

The cited sources do not establish a comparative privacy policy, voice-accuracy score, or accessibility-performance ranking. A built-in reader may keep the workflow inside an operating system or browser, while an upload service may require sending a document to that provider, but the available evidence does not justify a universal privacy conclusion.

For sensitive material, read the current privacy and data-retention terms of the exact service and avoid uploading confidential files until you understand how they are handled. For quality, test names, tables, punctuation, page headers, and the languages you actually use; vendor feature lists confirm that playback exists, not that every document will be pronounced or structured perfectly.

What is the practical decision rule for 2026?

Use the narrowest tool that covers your material: Android Select to Speak for screen content and background reading, Accessibility Reader for supported iPhone app text and a customizable full-screen view, Edge Read aloud for webpages and PDFs, and NaturalReader when uploads, pasted text, URLs, or OCR are the deciding requirements. Then verify your device version, supported input, background behavior, and any subscription gate with a short real-world test.

That approach is more reliable than choosing by a claimed “best voice.” The official material documents useful multitasking workflows, but it does not prove one service is superior across voice quality, privacy, accessibility, price, or every device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can text-to-speech read a webpage that changes while I am listening?

It depends on how the browser exposes the page. A reader generally speaks the text captured when playback starts; dynamically loaded sections, advertisements, or infinite-scroll content may require stopping and starting again after the page changes.

Will text-to-speech pronounce technical terms, names, or acronyms correctly?

No universal accuracy guarantee is established for these options. Test representative terms, and use pronunciation editing where available; NaturalReader specifically lists pronunciation editing among its controls.

Can I save the spoken audio as an MP3?

NaturalReader lists MP3 conversion as a subscription feature. The Android, iPhone, and Edge documentation cited here describes live playback controls, not a general audio-export function.

Does text-to-speech work without an internet connection on a plane?

Edge Read aloud is documented to work online and offline, with fewer voice choices offline. Offline behavior for the other options depends on the device, app, downloaded voices, and source material, so test in airplane mode before traveling.
