Deliveries show how many vehicles Tesla handed over; they do not show what it earned on them or how much cash remained after investment. To read an earnings report well, pair delivery growth with automotive gross margin and regulatory-credit revenue, operating income, GAAP net income and diluted EPS, energy profitability, and cash flow, capital spending and liquidity.
As of October 4, 2026, Tesla’s latest posted results were for the second quarter of 2026; the company had scheduled its third-quarter earnings for October 21. Tesla’s Investor Relations archive lists its releases and filings.
Start with revenue, then separate Tesla’s businesses
Check total revenue, but do not stop there. Tesla reports automotive, energy generation and storage, and services and other. Comparing those segments helps distinguish vehicle trends from growth elsewhere in the company.
For the three months ended June 30, 2026, Tesla reported revenue of $28.236 billion, compared with $22.496 billion in the same quarter of 2025. First-half revenue was $50.623 billion, versus $41.831 billion in the first half of 2025. These are reported results, not a measure of how much profit each dollar of revenue produced. The figures are in Tesla’s Q2 2026 Form 10-Q.

Automotive revenue reflects more than unit volume: pricing, incentives and the mix of vehicles sold matter too. Tesla’s FY2025 filing attributed lower automotive sales revenue in part to an approximately 8% decline in cash deliveries and lower average selling prices driven by mix and higher incentives. That is why a delivery count cannot explain a revenue change on its own.
Services and other is also a varied category, not a single recurring software stream. It includes activities such as paid Supercharging, maintenance and collision work, used vehicles and insurance. Tesla said first-half 2026 growth in this category was primarily associated with used-vehicle volume and average selling price, non-warranty maintenance and collision revenue, and paid Supercharging sessions.
Check automotive gross profit, margin and regulatory credits
Automotive gross profit and gross margin indicate how much remains after costs assigned to the automotive segment, before company-wide operating expenses. Read both alongside regulatory-credit revenue: Tesla’s reported automotive margin includes credits, whose revenue can vary with regulation, production and sales.
In Q2 2026, Tesla’s automotive regulatory-credit revenue fell $293 million, or 67%, year over year. For the first half, it fell $508 million, or 49%. The FY2025 filing reported a $770 million, or 28%, year-over-year decline for the full year. These are company-reported changes, not estimates of what margin would have been without credits.
Tesla reported total automotive gross margin of 17.8% for FY2025, down from 18.4% in 2024, and said the decrease primarily reflected lower credit revenue and changes in automotive sales and cost of sales. Do not treat a credit-excluded margin as a Tesla-reported figure unless the filing explicitly provides it. If you calculate an adjusted figure yourself, label it as your calculation and show the method.
Use operating income to see the cost of running the business
Operating income and operating margin show what remains after operating expenses, including research and development (R&D) and selling, general and administrative costs. They connect segment gross profit to the spending needed to run and develop the company. Track those expenses in dollars and as a share of revenue, and read Tesla’s explanation for material movements rather than assuming revenue growth automatically means better operating leverage.
For context, Tesla’s FY2025 Form 10-K reported R&D expense of $6.411 billion, 41% higher than in 2024. The company said the increase primarily reflected AI and other programs as well as higher stock-based compensation. When expenses change sharply, their stated drivers help explain why operating income may not move in line with revenue.
Read GAAP net income and diluted EPS below the operating line
GAAP net income attributable to common stockholders and diluted earnings per share (EPS) show bottom-line earnings and the per-share result. They can move differently from operating income because of items below the operating line, including interest income, taxes, foreign-exchange impacts and other income or expense.

Tesla reported Q2 2026 net income attributable to common stockholders of $1.11 billion, down $58 million year over year. First-half net income was $1.59 billion, up $10 million. Keep GAAP results as the baseline; if comparing a non-GAAP measure from an earnings release, identify it as non-GAAP and include the company’s reconciliation.
Evaluate energy on profitability as well as growth
Read energy generation and storage as its own business: compare revenue, gross profit, margin and reported storage deployments rather than folding them into a vehicle-sales narrative. Deployment timing matters because Tesla says Megapack deployments can vary meaningfully from quarter to quarter with project milestones and logistics.
In Q2 2026, energy generation and storage revenue was $3.139 billion, up from $2.789 billion a year earlier, while segment gross margin fell from 30.3% to 20.4%. Tesla attributed the quarterly decrease primarily to changes in segment revenue and cost, including higher average cost per megawatt-hour associated mainly with sales mix and unfavorable warranty adjustments. This is a useful reminder that rising segment revenue does not necessarily mean rising profitability.
For the full year 2025, energy revenue grew 27% year over year, primarily due to increased Megapack and Powerwall deployments, according to Tesla. Energy gross margin was 29.8% in 2025, compared with 26.2% in 2024. Annual and quarterly comparisons answer different questions: annual results give a broader view, while quarter-to-quarter deployment timing can be uneven.

Compare cash generation with investment and liquidity
Operating cash flow indicates cash generated by operations. Compare it with capital expenditures (capex) to understand investment needs and free cash flow, using the company’s definition and any reconciliation in the report rather than silently substituting another formula. Also check cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments as a measure of available liquidity.
Tesla reported $8.63 billion of operating cash flow for the six months ended June 30, 2026, compared with $4.70 billion in the first half of 2025. At June 30, 2026, it held $43.524 billion in cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments, $535 million less than at year-end 2025.
The Q2 2026 filing said Tesla expected 2026 capex to exceed $25 billion, citing AI initiatives, compute infrastructure and data centers, manufacturing and R&D facilities, and its company-operated asset and service footprint. This is management’s forward-looking expectation, not an achieved spending result or a guarantee. A substantial cash balance can fund investment, but does not by itself establish that projects will earn an adequate return.
Compare periods without mistaking explanation for proof
For each metric, make the period and units explicit. Use the same quarter a year earlier as the main comparison to reduce seasonal distortion, then check the preceding quarter for momentum. Look for direction across several quarters rather than treating one report as a lasting trend.
- Growth and profitability: compare revenue growth with gross profit, segment gross margins and operating margin.
- Vehicle performance and credits: read automotive sales revenue and margin with regulatory-credit revenue disclosed separately; consider pricing, mix and incentives as described in the filing.
- Business mix: compare automotive, energy, and services and other revenue and gross profit, alongside deployment or activity context Tesla reports.
- Earnings and cash: set GAAP net income and diluted EPS beside operating cash flow, capex, free cash flow and cash and investments.
- Results and outlook: label actual results, management expectations and analyst estimates distinctly. Do not present a forecast as an achieved result.
Seasonality, mix, project timing, credits, currency and accounting or one-off items can affect comparisons. Tesla’s explanations of a change are management’s stated explanations; they are useful context, not independent proof of causation. For forward-looking statements, Tesla’s Q2 2025 update cautions that they rely on assumptions and management’s current expectations, involve risks and uncertainties, and are not guarantees.
