Tenderloin Night Shift was a free, browser-based multiplayer first-person shooter set in recognizable parts of San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood. Players shot zombie-like enemies, earned points and unlocked weapon upgrades. The game was removed on October 16, 2026, after officials and homeless-services advocates condemned its depiction of a real, economically vulnerable community and the way it was marketed as an advertising vehicle.
Creator Pierre-Louis Biojout, founder of the AI startup NanoCorp, said the game was fictional and drew inspiration from a Call of Duty Alcatraz level. Tenderloin Night Shift recreated identifiable San Francisco locations rather than using an invented city. Reported details included the Eddy and Jones intersection, local transit signs, scooters, Waymo vehicles, AI billboards and an apartment advertisement using the “Tendernob” nickname. In the game, those surroundings formed the map for multiplayer rounds against zombie-like enemies.
The design made the setting immediately recognizable, while the enemy roster prompted the most serious criticism. Reported enemies included a Black security guard and a character called “the Folded,” whose hunched posture appeared to reference the “fentanyl fold” associated with opioid use.

Why was the San Francisco zombie game controversial?
Critics argued that the game turned real residents and visible neighborhood hardship into targets for entertainment. Because the map used actual Tenderloin landmarks and the enemies appeared to draw on stereotypes associated with homelessness, addiction and race, opponents said the project could make vulnerable people seem like monsters rather than neighbors.
San Francisco Supervisor Bilal Mahmood said, “Turning violence against real people, including unhoused people, into entertainment is dehumanizing and should never be normalized.” City Attorney’s Office spokesperson Jen Kwart said the game was not an accurate depiction of the thousands of hardworking families living in the Tenderloin and that glorifying violence against neighbors would not improve conditions there.
Jennifer Friedenbach, executive director of the Coalition on Homelessness, described the project as monetizing the “dehumanization and pretend killing for fun of mostly Black and Brown residents of the poorest neighborhood in San Francisco.” Former Tenderloin Supervisor Dean Preston characterized the premise as “vigilantism involving killing poor people.”

Why the setting mattered
A fictional zombie map can separate game violence from a real population. In this case, recognizable intersections, transit infrastructure and commercial references narrowed that distance. Critics therefore judged the context, visual references and marketing together, rather than treating the project as an ordinary horror-game setting.
Was the game about shooting homeless people?

Who made Tenderloin Night Shift?
Pierre-Louis Biojout, founder of NanoCorp, created the browser game. He promoted it with the caption: “San Francisco couldn’t fix the Tenderloin. So I monetized it Call of Duty style zombie shooter on the real SF streets.
