To play The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom on a PC through an emulator, configure the emulator’s virtual controller first. In Cemu, open Input settings, choose Wii U GamePad, select an input API and device, map every control, then save a profile. In Ryujinx or Ryubing, open input configuration, choose Player 1 and your device, map the controls, apply the changes, and save the profile.

Keyboard and mouse input can be mapped, but neither emulator’s cited documentation defines one universal official Tears of the Kingdom keyboard layout. A gamepad is the simpler choice for analog movement; a keyboard and mouse work when you prefer custom keys or do not have a controller. Motion features require compatible hardware and, for some Joy-Con arrangements, an additional motion service.

What does “Tears of the Kingdom PC port” mean here?

There is no official native Windows release covered by the setup material used for this guide. The procedures below describe configuring the input layer in Cemu and in Ryujinx/Ryubing, rather than installing a PC edition. They assume you already have a lawful emulator setup and game installation; they do not explain how to obtain copyrighted game files, keys, firmware, or circumvention materials.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The important distinction is that the game receives input from the emulator’s virtual controller. Clicking a game window or changing a few raw keyboard shortcuts is not enough if the virtual GamePad or Player 1 profile is incomplete. Every stick, button, trigger, D-pad direction, and system input that the game may request should have a deliberate binding.

What do I need before configuring controls?

Prepare the hardware and software before opening the emulator. This avoids a common situation in which the device is connected after the input menu has already scanned for controllers.

  • Connect the controller before launching Cemu, Ryujinx, or Ryubing.
  • For keyboard play, keep the keyboard and mouse connected and decide whether the mouse will control a camera axis or only act as extra buttons.
  • Know whether the device presents itself through XInput, SDL, or another backend. The available choices depend on the emulator and operating system.
  • If motion controls matter, use hardware with a gyro or other motion sensor. A standard Xbox controller supplies ordinary buttons and sticks but is not a motion-capable option in Cemu.
  • Have a short, safe area available for checking the complete map before committing to a long session.

Do not change random game files to correct a button assignment. Remapping the emulator’s virtual controller and saving a named profile is the supported way to keep the layout consistent.

How do I set up a controller in Cemu?

Cemu’s documented path is Options or Settings followed by Input settings. Set the emulated device to Wii U GamePad, choose an input API, select the physical controller, map it, and save a profile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect the controller first. Close and reopen Cemu if you plugged it in only after the emulator started. A fresh scan often makes a missing device appear.
  2. Open the input panel. Use Options or Settings, then choose Input settings.
  3. Select the virtual device. Set the emulated controller to Wii U GamePad. This is the virtual layout that the game will read.
  4. Choose an API. Cemu documentation describes SDL for modern motion-capable devices and XInput for Xbox-style controllers. If the device list is empty, switch to another available API and check the list again.
  5. Select the physical device. Pick the connected controller from Cemu’s device selector. If more than one appears, use the entry that corresponds to the controller you intend to use.
  6. Map the controls. Assign both analog sticks, the face buttons, shoulder buttons, triggers, D-pad, stick clicks, and any system buttons exposed by the interface. Move each stick through its full range while assigning it so the correct axis is captured.
  7. Name and save the profile. Use a descriptive name such as “DualSense motion” or “XInput pad,” then save it. A named profile makes it possible to switch layouts without rebuilding the map.
  8. Check the complete layout. In a safe area, confirm movement, camera control, menu navigation, triggers, stick clicks, and frequently used actions. If one input is wrong, return to the profile instead of editing unrelated game settings.

Cemu’s Windows handbook describes a standard keyboard-and-mouse configuration, and Cemu’s official material states that keyboard input and USB controllers are supported. Those statements establish support and remapping, not a preconfigured Tears of the Kingdom key arrangement.

How do I set up a controller in Ryujinx or Ryubing?

Ryujinx and its Ryubing setup documentation use a player-based input screen. Select Player 1, choose the device from the dropdown, map each control, apply the changes, and save the profile.

  1. Open input configuration. From the emulator’s settings, open the input configuration or controller settings page.
  2. Choose the player slot. Select Player 1. A carefully mapped device in another slot will not control the game if Player 1 remains assigned to a different device.
  3. Select the input device. Open the device dropdown and choose the connected controller, keyboard, mouse, or other supported source.
  4. Assign every control. Map the left and right sticks, face buttons, shoulder buttons, triggers, D-pad, stick clicks, and system buttons shown in the interface. For a keyboard profile, assign a key to every virtual-controller input you expect to use.
  5. Apply and save. Apply the configuration, give the layout a recognizable name, and save the profile. Re-select that profile if the emulator opens with another layout later.
  6. Adjust the deadzone when necessary. Ryubing documents a default stick deadzone of 0.10 and recommends increasing it to at least 0.20 to reduce unwanted drift. Treat 0.20 as a starting point rather than a requirement for every controller; raise it only as far as needed to keep a resting stick from moving.

Ryujinx/Ryubing documentation lists keyboard, mouse, touch, Joy-Con, and broad controller support, with controls remappable in the input interface. It does not publish one universal Tears of the Kingdom keyboard layout, so the saved profile is your own arrangement.

Can I play Tears of the Kingdom with a keyboard and mouse?

Yes. The emulators document keyboard and mouse input and allow those inputs to be assigned to the virtual controller. The practical limitation is that keyboard keys are digital: a key is normally either pressed or released, while a physical stick provides a range of analog positions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build the layout around the game’s action groups

Start with movement and camera control, then place actions that you use repeatedly within easy reach. The exact letters are a preference, not an official standard, so choose a scheme that matches your hand position and mouse grip.

  • Assign movement to a cluster that permits diagonal combinations without stretching.
  • Use the mouse for camera movement only if its axis behavior feels predictable; otherwise assign the camera to a second key cluster or another available axis.
  • Give face-button actions distinct keys and keep them close enough for rapid combinations.
  • Assign shoulder buttons, triggers, stick clicks, and all D-pad directions explicitly. Omitting an infrequently used input can block a menu or contextual action later.
  • Reserve convenient keys or mouse buttons for high-frequency actions such as jump, interact, aim, and weapon actions.
  • Keep system or menu buttons away from keys that are easy to press accidentally during movement.

Save a profile instead of relying on raw focus

After mapping the keyboard and mouse, save the layout in Cemu or in the Ryujinx/Ryubing profile system. Select that profile for the correct virtual device or Player 1 slot each time you launch. If a key appears to do nothing, first confirm that the profile is active and that the corresponding virtual-controller input has a binding.

What keyboard users should expect from analog inputs

A held movement key generally produces a fixed direction rather than a gradual range of speeds. That can make fine positioning or camera adjustment less precise than with a gamepad. Additional software or hardware can change how inputs are presented, but the cited emulator documentation does not establish a single universal method or recommended product for creating analog behavior.

Which controllers support motion controls?

Motion support depends on both the physical sensor and the emulator’s input route. A controller can be fully usable for buttons and sticks while still lacking gyro input.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Controller or setup Cemu guidance Ryujinx/Ryubing guidance Practical implication
Nintendo Switch controller Documented as motion-capable through the SDL route. Motion is supported in many setups. Use the appropriate motion source and verify that the device is exposed to the emulator.
DualShock 4 Documented as motion-capable through SDL. Controller and motion support can vary by configuration. Prefer the documented motion-capable route rather than treating it as a generic XInput pad.
DualSense Documented as motion-capable through SDL. Compatibility depends on the emulator, operating system, and selected input path. Check that motion is enabled and that the selected device exposes its sensor.
Xbox controller Buttons and sticks work, but Cemu documentation identifies Xbox controllers as lacking motion-control support. Ordinary controller input is supported; motion availability is not equivalent to having a gyro. Choose it for conventional controls, not for Cemu motion input.
Paired Joy-Con setup Use the supported controller and motion route available on the system. Dual-JoyCon motion may require an external service such as BetterJoy or DS4Windows. Extra software can be a dependency; compatibility is not guaranteed across every version and operating system.

Do not assume that rumble, gyro, and motion axes will behave identically across operating systems or emulator versions. If motion is unavailable, confirm that the physical device actually contains motion hardware, that the emulator’s motion source is enabled, and that the selected API or backend exposes it.

Should I use a controller or keyboard and mouse?

Choose a controller when analog movement and the least configuration work matter most. Choose keyboard and mouse when customizable keys are more important or a gamepad is unavailable.

Consideration Gamepad Keyboard and mouse
Analog movement Physical sticks provide a continuous range of directions and speeds. Keys provide digital presses unless additional software or hardware changes the input behavior.
Motion input Possible with motion-capable Switch controllers, DualShock 4, or DualSense through documented routes; Xbox controllers do not provide motion in Cemu. A keyboard and mouse do not supply controller gyro data by themselves.
Remapping Both Cemu and Ryujinx/Ryubing expose button and stick mapping. Both can map keyboard input; Ryujinx/Ryubing explicitly documents keyboard and mouse mapping in its input interface.
Configuration effort A standard XInput controller is usually the simplest starting point. Motion-capable devices may need a specific API. Every virtual-controller input must be assigned, and the layout must be saved and selected for the right player.
Best fit Players who want analog traversal, familiar console ergonomics, or motion-capable hardware. Players who prefer custom key placement, mouse camera control, or have no gamepad.

There is no authoritative universal key map to copy. Treat any community layout as a personal preference and preserve the game’s action logic when choosing your own keys.

Why is my controller missing or mapped incorrectly?

Most input failures come from the emulator seeing a different backend, player slot, or saved profile than you expect. Work through the branch that matches the symptom.

The controller does not appear

  • Reconnect the controller, close the emulator, and reopen it so the device is scanned again.
  • In Cemu, switch between the available input APIs, such as SDL and XInput, then check the device list.
  • In Ryujinx/Ryubing, open the device dropdown for Player 1 and confirm that the intended device is selected rather than an empty or disconnected entry.
  • Disconnect duplicate controllers or virtual devices temporarily so the correct entry is easier to identify.

The wrong action occurs when a button is pressed

  • Return to the virtual-controller mapping screen and assign the physical button again.
  • Check that the correct profile is loaded and that you are editing Player 1 or the active Cemu profile.
  • Save the revised profile with a new name if you want to preserve the earlier layout for comparison.

The stick moves by itself

Open the deadzone control. Ryubing lists 0.10 as its default and recommends at least 0.20 as a starting point for reducing drift; increase the value gradually until the resting stick stops moving, while avoiding a setting so high that small intended movements are ignored.

Motion input does not respond

  • Verify that the controller has a gyro or other motion sensor.
  • Use the motion-capable API or input source documented for the device; a generic Xbox-style route will not create motion data for an Xbox controller in Cemu.
  • Enable the emulator’s motion source and reselect the device after changing the backend.
  • For dual Joy-Con motion in Ryujinx/Ryubing, determine whether BetterJoy, DS4Windows, or another supported motion service is required for the specific configuration.

Keyboard bindings appear to do nothing

  • Confirm that every required virtual-controller input has a key or mouse binding.
  • Make sure the saved keyboard profile is selected for Player 1 or the active Cemu device.
  • Click the emulator window so it has input focus, then check the map again without changing unrelated game files.

How do I change controls after the first setup?

Reopen the same input screen, edit the saved profile, apply the changes, and save a new version. Keeping separate profiles is useful when switching between a conventional gamepad, a motion-capable controller, and keyboard play.

  1. Open Cemu’s Input settings or Ryujinx/Ryubing’s input configuration.
  2. Select the profile and device that the game is actually using.
  3. Change only the affected binding or deadzone, then review the rest of the map for accidental conflicts.
  4. Save with a descriptive name, such as “Keyboard camera on mouse” or “SDL gyro pad.”
  5. Re-select the profile for the active virtual controller or Player 1 slot and verify the change in a safe area.

This workflow preserves a known-good layout and makes recovery straightforward if a new mapping causes an unexpected action.

What is a reliable final checklist?

  • The controller or keyboard was connected before the emulator opened.
  • The emulator’s virtual controller is set correctly: Wii U GamePad in Cemu or the intended Player 1 device in Ryujinx/Ryubing.
  • An input API or backend that exposes the device is selected.
  • Both sticks, all buttons, triggers, D-pad directions, stick clicks, and system inputs have bindings.
  • The profile has been saved and selected after any edits.
  • The deadzone is high enough to prevent drift without making the stick feel unresponsive.
  • Motion hardware and the emulator’s motion source are enabled when motion input is needed.
  • Keyboard users have a deliberate plan for movement, camera, face buttons, shoulder controls, D-pad directions, and menu inputs.
  • The complete layout has been checked in a safe area before a long play session.

Frequently asked questions

Can I combine a controller with keyboard shortcuts?

The emulators expose multiple input sources, but the cited documentation does not define one universal mixed controller-plus-keyboard preset for this game. The dependable approach is to map the intended inputs into one saved virtual-controller profile and confirm which device owns each action.

Will changing the emulator backend erase my mappings?

Switching APIs can make a device appear under a different entry, so an existing profile may no longer point to the active hardware. Save a named profile, then reselect the correct device and remap only the controls that the new backend does not preserve.

Can a keyboard reproduce the gradual movement of an analog stick?

Ordinary keys send digital presses, not a continuous stick position. That means a keyboard layout can cover the controls but may feel less precise for slow movement or fine camera adjustments.

Do all motion-capable controllers work without extra software?

No. Cemu documents motion-capable routes for Switch controllers, DualShock 4, and DualSense through SDL, while some Ryujinx/Ryubing dual-JoyCon arrangements may require BetterJoy, DS4Windows, or another supported motion service. Compatibility depends on the controller, operating system, selected backend, and emulator version.

What should I save before experimenting with a new layout?

Keep the working profile under a separate name before changing bindings or deadzones. If the new arrangement causes conflicts, selecting the earlier profile restores the known mapping without rebuilding every control.
