The TEAMGROUP PD20 is worth buying if you have a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 (20Gbps) port and want a very small drive for fast, intermittent transfers. It reaches almost its advertised 2,000 MB/s read and 1,800 MB/s write rates in compatible testing, weighs only 22 g, and adds IP54 dust and splash resistance. Its important limitation is sustained writing: after the cache fills, large transfers can run at roughly 300 MB/s. Encryption is software-based rather than hardware-based, and IP54 does not make the drive waterproof or safe to submerge.

What is the TEAMGROUP PD20?

The PD20 is a compact external solid-state drive using a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 Type-C interface. TEAMGROUP sells it in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities, with a quoted maximum of 2,000 MB/s sequential read and 1,800 MB/s sequential write. The drive is designed around short, fast transfers and easy carrying rather than workstation-class, continuously heavy writing.

That distinction matters because the headline speed is available only when the computer, cable, and port can negotiate the full 20Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 connection. On a slower USB port, the PD20 remains usable, but the interface becomes the bottleneck. Even with a fast host, long writes can fall sharply once the dynamic write cache is exhausted.

How fast is the PD20 in real use?

With a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 host, the PD20 can deliver performance very close to its specification for short or moderately sized sequential transfers. TechRadar measured 1,988 MB/s read and 1,871 MB/s write on a 4TB sample connected through USB 3.2 Gen 2×2. Those results are effectively at the advertised ceiling, allowing for normal differences between test systems, file sizes, and measurement software.

Independent results do not mean every computer will show those numbers. Sequential benchmarks use a controlled workload that is easier for an SSD than a mixture of small files, application data, and simultaneous background activity. A laptop with a slower port, a busy system drive, or a cable that does not support the required link can show much lower throughput.

What the near‑2GB/s result means

At roughly 2,000 MB/s, a 20GB sequential transfer can theoretically complete in around 10 seconds before overhead. Actual copy times vary because operating-system overhead, source-drive speed, file fragmentation, and thermal behavior all influence the result. The practical benefit is most obvious when moving a few gigabytes of photos, project files, game installs, or a current backup set.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The rating is a maximum, not a guaranteed minimum. It describes peak sequential throughput under suitable conditions, not the speed of every file operation. Small random files, encrypted volumes, and workloads that repeatedly alternate reading and writing can be slower than a simple benchmark.

Does the PD20 need USB 3.2 Gen 2×2?

Yes, USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 is required for the PD20’s headline performance. That interface provides a 20Gbps link. A conventional USB 3.2 Gen 2 connection has less bandwidth, so the SSD will work but cannot reach approximately 2,000 MB/s.

Host connection Will the PD20 work? Expected result
USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 (20Gbps) Yes Required for rates near 2,000 MB/s read and 1,800 MB/s write
USB 3.2 Gen 2 Yes Usable, but interface-limited and slower than the headline figures
Other USB generations Depends on the host and adapter Usable speed is limited by the slowest supported link; no peak-rate guarantee

Check the exact label in your computer’s technical specifications rather than assuming that any USB-C socket is 20Gbps. USB-C describes the connector shape, not the transfer speed. The included Type-C-to-Type-C cable is appropriate for a USB-C host, but the host still needs to support USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 to unlock maximum performance.

How to verify your port before buying

  1. Open your laptop or desktop manufacturer’s specification page and search for “USB 3.2 Gen 2×2,” “20Gbps,” or an equivalent 20Gbps USB-C designation.
  2. Check whether the port is connected directly to the system or routed through a hub or dock. A dock can negotiate a slower link even when the computer itself has a 20Gbps port.
  3. Use the supplied Type-C-to-Type-C cable for your first test, then confirm the operating system reports the expected link speed if your hardware provides that information.
  4. Run a short sequential test or copy a moderately sized file. Treat the result as a host-and-workload measurement, not a permanent guarantee for every transfer.

Does the PD20 slow down on large files?

Yes. Sustained writing is the PD20’s main performance caveat. PCWorld copied 450GB to a 2TB model and found that the transfer eventually fell to about 300 MB/s for most of the operation. Shorter 32GiB workloads stayed much closer to the advertised performance. PC Gamer similarly reported that peak sequential performance lasts roughly 50GB before throttling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This behavior is typical of a portable SSD that uses a fast write cache. While the cache has room, incoming data can be accepted at high speed. Once the cache is full, the drive has to write directly to its slower native flash rate while also reorganizing data, so the transfer settles at a lower sustained speed.

When the slowdown matters

  • Usually acceptable: copying a photo library in batches, moving a game library, shuttling a current video project, or creating backups that complete in moderate sessions.
  • Potentially frustrating: repeatedly writing hundreds of gigabytes, ingesting multiple camera cards back-to-back, building large disk images, or using the PD20 as a scratch drive for continuous production workloads.
  • Plan for variable completion times: a copy that begins near 1,800 MB/s can take much longer after the cache is exhausted, so progress estimates from the first minutes may be misleading.

The 300 MB/s figure is an observed result from a particular 450GB transfer, not a universal floor. Temperature, remaining free space, source-drive speed, file mix, and the exact capacity can change the point at which performance drops and the rate that follows. The important buying conclusion is that the PD20 is optimized for bursts, not recurring, very large writes.

Is the PD20 waterproof or rugged enough for travel?

No. IP54 is splash- and dust-resistance, not waterproofing. TEAMGROUP says the IP54 testing was performed by an external laboratory and describes the drive as splash-resistant and partially dustproof when it is not operating. IP54 should protect against limited dust ingress and water spray, but it does not cover immersion, rain exposure over an extended period, or use underwater.

Keep the drive dry during active transfers and disconnect it before moving it from a wet environment into a dry one if condensation could form. Do not treat the rating as permission to drop the PD20 into a sink, pool, or bag with loose liquid. A protective case can reduce impact and connector damage, but it does not change the formal IP rating.

Physical design details

The 75 × 34 × 15.2 mm body weighs 22 g. Its rubberized exterior gives more grip than bare metal, and the lanyard opening makes it easier to attach to a cable organizer or bag. Those details improve portability, but they are not substitutes for a backup: water resistance and a tough shell cannot prevent data loss from controller failure, theft, or accidental deletion.

Does the PD20 have hardware encryption?

No. The PD20 offers software encryption only. TechRadar lists the lack of hardware encryption as a drawback. To protect sensitive files, you must use operating-system encryption, an encrypted container, or another software-based method that runs on the host computer.

Software encryption can be appropriate for personal files, but it depends on the computer and the chosen encryption tool. It may add processing overhead, require a compatible application on another computer, and create recovery-key responsibilities. A business user carrying regulated or highly confidential data should compare drives that explicitly provide hardware encryption and should verify the organization’s security policy before deployment.

Which PD20 capacity should you choose?

The range is straightforward: 1TB for a smaller working set, 2TB for a general-purpose portable library, and 4TB when you need more room for games, media, or backups. The official specification sheet gives the same maximum read and write ratings across the listed capacities. The available independent peak test cited here used the 4TB model, while the large-transfer test used 2TB.

Capacity Best fit Evidence and qualification
1TB Documents, selected photos, smaller project sets, and travel storage Official range; no separate independent speed result stated
2TB General portable library, game storage, and routine backups PCWorld’s 450GB sustained-transfer test used this capacity
4TB Large photo, video, and multi-device libraries TechRadar measured 1,988/1,871 MB/s sequentially on a 4TB sample

Capacity does not remove the sustained-write limitation. A 4TB drive gives you more space before you need to rotate files, but a single very large write can still move from cache speed to a much lower rate.

What warranty and accessories come with the PD20?

TEAMGROUP lists a five-year limited warranty and includes a Type-C-to-Type-C cable. “Limited” means the warranty’s conditions, exclusions, and remedy are controlled by the manufacturer’s current terms; retain proof of purchase and confirm regional support before relying on it for business continuity.

Retail pricing, stock, and the exact capacity supplied by a seller change over time. Compare the complete listing, not only the advertised terabyte figure, and verify that the package contains the cable you need for your host.

How should you set up and use the PD20?

The basic setup is simple, but a few habits help avoid confusing a host limitation with a defective drive.

  1. Inspect the package. Confirm the capacity on the label and check the Type-C-to-Type-C cable for visible damage.
  2. Connect directly first. Plug the PD20 into the computer’s USB-C port rather than beginning through a hub or dock. Direct connection makes troubleshooting the negotiated link easier.
  3. Let the operating system detect it. If it appears as an uninitialized or unformatted disk, use the system’s disk-management utility to initialize and format it. Choose a filesystem that suits the computers and devices you intend to use; formatting erases existing data.
  4. Set up encryption if required. Because encryption is software-based, select an encryption method your operating system and other expected computers can unlock. Store recovery keys separately from the drive.
  5. Copy a test folder. Start with a few gigabytes of representative files, eject the drive safely, and confirm that the files open from the PD20 before migrating a larger library.
  6. Monitor long transfers. Keep the drive ventilated and expect speed to change after the cache fills. Do not disconnect it while the operating system is still writing.
  7. Maintain another copy. The PD20 is portable storage, not a backup strategy by itself. Keep irreplaceable data on at least one additional device or service.

Who should avoid the PD20?

Look elsewhere if your workflow repeatedly writes hundreds of gigabytes and cannot tolerate a drop to around 300 MB/s after the cache is exhausted. Video ingest stations, scratch disks for continuous rendering, and other write-heavy workstations benefit from a drive designed and tested for sustained throughput.

You should also avoid it as your only choice when hardware-backed encryption is mandatory, when the drive may be submerged, or when your computers have no USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 ports and you are paying a premium for performance you cannot use.

How does the PD20 compare with other portable SSD choices?

Use the following criteria rather than comparing peak numbers alone. The right alternative depends on which limitation matters most in your workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Comparison factor What the PD20 offers What to investigate in another drive
Host interface USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, 20Gbps Whether USB 3.2 Gen 2, USB4, or Thunderbolt support better matches your computers
Short-transfer speed Up to 2,000 MB/s read and 1,800 MB/s write; near those figures in compatible testing Independent results using the same interface and a comparable workload
Sustained large-file writing Can fall to roughly 300 MB/s after cache exhaustion Published long-duration or full-drive write behavior, not only a short benchmark
Portability 75 × 34 × 15.2 mm and 22 g, with a rubberized exterior and lanyard opening Weight, dimensions, connector protection, and included case
Environmental protection IP54 splash and limited dust resistance; not immersion-safe Exact IP rating and whether the test applies while operating
Security Software encryption only Hardware encryption, management features, and recovery workflow
Warranty and capacity 1TB, 2TB, 4TB; five-year limited warranty Capacity options, warranty duration, and regional support terms

What should you check before buying?

  • Confirm that the computer has a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 (20Gbps) port if speed is the reason you want this model.
  • Decide whether your normal writes are intermittent or whether you routinely move hundreds of gigabytes in one session.
  • Choose 1TB, 2TB, or 4TB based on your working set, while remembering that more capacity does not eliminate cache-related slowdown.
  • Determine whether software encryption satisfies your security policy; the PD20 has no hardware encryption.
  • Treat IP54 as splash and dust resistance, never as permission for immersion.
  • Verify the seller’s exact capacity, current price, stock, warranty region, and included cable before ordering.

Is the TEAMGROUP PD20 worth buying?

The PD20 is worth buying for fast, portable, burst-oriented storage on a compatible 20Gbps USB-C system. Its measured peak performance is genuine, its 22 g design is unusually easy to carry, and IP54 adds useful everyday protection. The recommendation changes for sustained-write professionals, users who need hardware encryption, or anyone expecting waterproof or submersible protection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 4TB PD20 faster than the 2TB version?

The official specification lists the same maximum read and write rates for the 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities. The available independent peak result came from a 4TB sample, while the documented 450GB sustained-write test used a 2TB sample, so the evidence does not establish a capacity-based speed advantage.

Can I use the PD20 with a USB4 or Thunderbolt computer?

The drive itself is a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 device, so its useful performance depends on how that computer exposes USB compatibility. Check the computer or dock documentation for support of the PD20’s 20Gbps USB mode; no USB4- or Thunderbolt-specific benchmark is established here.

Should I leave the PD20 plugged in during a long transfer?

Yes, avoid moving or disconnecting it while data is being written. Keep the enclosure ventilated, use the operating system’s safe-eject command when finished, and remember that a long transfer may slow substantially after the write cache fills.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is software encryption on the PD20 suitable for business files?

It can be suitable when your organization approves the chosen software method and has a recovery-key process. If policy requires encryption performed by the drive itself, the PD20 does not meet that requirement because it has no hardware encryption.
