Choose the TCL NXTPAPER 14 if a large, matte, reading-focused screen and Android suit you. Choose the current iPad Air M4 if you want a lighter tablet, a conventional high-resolution display, Apple Pencil support, or Apple’s ecosystem. Neither is a universal winner: your best fit depends on how you read, carry the tablet, and take notes.
This comparison covers Apple’s current 11-inch and 13-inch M4 iPad Air models. If you are considering an older iPad Air, check that generation’s display and Pencil compatibility separately.

TCL NXTPAPER 14 Android Tablet, 14.3" 2.4K Paper-Like Display, 8+256GB | $329.99 | Buy on Amazon |
How the displays differ for reading
The NXTPAPER 14 has a 14.3-inch 2.4K NXTPAPER 3.0 screen. TCL positions it as a matte, reading-oriented display with selectable viewing modes, including color and grayscale-like options. Its larger surface can be useful for long documents, split-screen reading, or keeping more text visible at once.
The M4 iPad Air uses an IPS Liquid Retina display: 2360 × 1640 pixels at 264 ppi on the 11-inch model, and 2732 × 2048 pixels at 264 ppi on the 13-inch model. Apple lists antireflective coating and True Tone on both sizes; listed brightness is 500 nits for the 11-inch and 600 nits for the 13-inch model.

These are different display approaches, not evidence that one is easier on every reader’s eyes. TCL describes its screen as designed for eye comfort and reduced glare, but those manufacturer claims do not establish that it prevents eye strain or improves eye health for everyone. Try to assess the screen in the lighting and reading conditions you expect to use.
Portability versus screen area
| Model | Display | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| TCL NXTPAPER 14 | 14.3-inch, 2.4K | 760 g |
| iPad Air M4, 11-inch Wi-Fi | 11-inch, 2360 × 1640, 264 ppi | 464 g |
| iPad Air M4, 13-inch Wi-Fi | 13-inch, 2732 × 2048, 264 ppi | 616 g |
These weights are manufacturer-listed specifications: TCL lists the NXTPAPER 14 at 760 g, while Apple lists the Wi-Fi iPad Air M4 models at 464 g and 616 g. The iPad Air is the lighter option, especially at 11 inches; the TCL provides the largest screen. Consider how often you will hold the tablet for reading or carry it with other gear.
Handwritten notes and stylus support
TCL identifies a T-Pen for writing and drawing on the NXTPAPER 14, while Apple lists support for Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C) on the current iPad Air. The cited product specifications do not establish comparative handwriting latency or writing feel, so choosing between them on those grounds requires trying the specific tablet and stylus.
Do not assume a T-Pen comes in every NXTPAPER 14 box. TCL calls the pen and other accessories optional and says availability varies by country. Apple’s listed iPad Air box contents are the tablet, a USB-C charge cable, and a 20W USB-C adapter; a Pencil is not included. Check the exact local bundle and the price of the compatible pen before comparing total cost.

Software and note-taking apps
The NXTPAPER 14 is an Android tablet with Google services, while the iPad Air runs iPadOS. Start with the note-taking, document, and cloud-sync apps you already use: confirm that the required apps are available and support the workflows you need on your chosen platform. The listed specifications do not establish a winner among specific note-taking apps, so the operating system alone cannot settle that choice.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Battery figures do not establish a runtime winner
TCL lists a 10,000 mAh battery and 33W PD fast charging for the NXTPAPER 14. Apple lists battery capacities of 28.93 Wh for the 11-inch iPad Air M4 and 36.59 Wh for the 13-inch model. Because the manufacturers report capacity in different units, and the figures do not show comparable real-world runtime, they cannot support a battery-life ranking.
Which tablet should you choose?
Choose the TCL NXTPAPER 14 if
- You want a 14.3-inch matte screen for reading and prefer TCL’s selectable display modes.
- You are comfortable with Android and the apps and services available for your workflow.
- You value a larger reading or working area more than a lower carry weight.
Choose the iPad Air M4 if
- You want a lighter tablet, particularly the 11-inch Wi-Fi model.
- You prefer an IPS display with antireflective coating and True Tone.
- You want Apple Pencil Pro or Apple Pencil (USB-C) support, or your workflow depends on Apple’s platform.
Check local price and bundle details
The cited global TCL product information does not settle current local price, stock, or which accessories are included. TCL also notes that specifications and features can vary by country. Apple’s technical specifications establish the M4 iPad Air sizes and listed box contents, but do not provide a price comparison. Before buying, compare listings in your market, verify the exact model and regional bundle, and include any separately purchased stylus or case in the total.
