sysPass is a self-hosted web password manager, not an Ubuntu desktop app. You can install it on Ubuntu either directly with Apache, PHP and MariaDB, or with Docker Compose, which the sysPass Docker documentation recommends for deploying the application and database together. The right choice depends on whether you want to manage those services on the host or keep the deployment more isolated in containers. Before installing, check that the sysPass release you plan to use supports your Ubuntu, PHP and database versions: the published requirements and Docker image details available here are historical, not a guarantee of current compatibility.
What do you need before installing sysPass on Ubuntu?
Plan for a server that can run a web application and its database, plus a way to serve the login page over HTTPS. The sysPass documentation describes an Apache, PHP and MySQL/MariaDB stack; the project repository also lists AES-256 encryption in CTR mode, two-factor authentication, user, group and profile management, several authentication options, and a JSON-RPC API. Those product features do not remove the need to secure the server, protect the application configuration, or test backups.
Compatibility is the first decision, not an afterthought. The sysPass installation documentation index points to prerequisites, dependencies, environment configuration and permissions, but the specific requirements cited in the sysPass 3.1 Debian guide are not current Ubuntu-release guarantees. Check the documentation and release notes for the exact sysPass version you intend to install, then verify that its supported PHP and MariaDB versions are available for your Ubuntu release.

Should you install sysPass natively or with Docker Compose?
Choose a native install if you want sysPass services managed directly by Ubuntu and are prepared to maintain Apache, PHP and MariaDB on the host. Choose Docker Compose if you prefer a repeatable application-and-database deployment and are comfortable managing containers, image updates and persistent volumes.

| Consideration | Native Apache/PHP/MariaDB | Docker Compose |
|---|---|---|
| Where services run | Apache, PHP and MariaDB are installed and managed on the Ubuntu host. | The application and database run as services in a Compose deployment. |
| Maintenance ownership | You manage host packages, PHP modules, web-server configuration and database maintenance. | You manage the Compose file, container lifecycle, image updates and persistent volumes. |
| Upgrade and rollback workflow | Coordinate application updates with the host’s PHP and database environment; plan a recovery path before changing versions. | Manage application and database changes through the deployment and its image configuration; retain backups of persistent data before updates. |
| Isolation and repeatability | More integrated with the host and its existing services. | More isolated and repeatable as a deployment, but containers do not eliminate security or backup responsibilities. |
| Control | Greater direct control over host Apache, PHP and MariaDB settings. | Less direct host-level integration; service configuration is managed through the container deployment. |
| Backups | Protect the database and sysPass configuration and backup files using a deliberate backup process. | Protect every persistent volume, including configuration, backups and database data. |
Docker does not make a deployment automatically current or safe. The sysPass Docker repository’s historical image metadata describes Apache 2.4, PHP 7.3–7.4 and MariaDB 10.2; treat those as old image details, not supported-version recommendations. Check the current release information before choosing an image, and do not carry example database passwords or old image tags into a production deployment.
How do you install sysPass natively on Ubuntu?
A native installation has five main stages: confirm compatibility, install the web and database stack, secure HTTPS, place the application files and configure permissions, then complete the browser installer. The sysPass 3.1 Debian guide lists older minimum requirements; use it as a checklist of components, not as a package command for every Ubuntu version.
1. Confirm the version requirements
The Debian-era guide specifies MariaDB 10.1 or newer, PHP 7.0 or newer, and PHP modules for mysql, curl, json, gd, xml, mbstring, intl and readline. LDAP is optional for directory authentication; mcrypt is optional for importing older XML exports. These package names and minimums do not establish what a current sysPass release supports on a particular Ubuntu version. Check the requirements for the application release and map them to the packages available on your Ubuntu host before proceeding.

2. Install and prepare the host stack
Update Ubuntu, then install Apache, MariaDB, PHP and the compatible PHP modules required by the sysPass release. Keep the database service on the private host network unless there is a specific administrative reason to expose it; the web application needs database access, but public access to the database is not required for users to sign in through the web interface.
Create a dedicated database and database credentials for sysPass rather than reusing an administrator account. Keep those credentials private and use the values consistently when completing the browser installer. The supplied installation guidance does not establish one universal SQL command sequence or package list for every Ubuntu release, so do not copy commands for a different release without checking compatibility.
3. Enable HTTPS before users reach the login page
Configure SSL for the Apache site before making the sysPass login page publicly reachable. A password manager’s web session and submitted credentials should not be exposed over an unencrypted connection. Confirm that the HTTPS site loads successfully, then use that HTTPS address for the installer and normal access.

4. Deploy the application and set ownership
Obtain a current sysPass release from the official project release path or clone the official repository, then unpack or check out the application under the web root. Set the web-server account as the owner of the application files, following the installation guide’s permissions guidance. Apply restrictive permissions to app/config and app/backup; these directories can contain sensitive configuration or backup data and should not be writable or readable more broadly than the application and authorized administrators require.
5. Finish in the browser and verify operation
Open the sysPass installer through the HTTPS site, enter the database details, and complete the setup. Set a strong master password and store it securely: it is a central credential for access to the password manager, so it should not be reused or placed in an unprotected file. After setup, sign in and check that the application works, backup configuration is understood, and mail settings are usable if your deployment relies on email features.
How do you install sysPass with Docker Compose?
The documented Docker route is to install Docker and Compose, obtain a Compose file, start the services, inspect the logs and preserve the deployment’s persistent volumes. Compose can simplify provisioning, but you still own image selection, HTTPS, access control, updates and recovery.

- Install Docker and Compose. Use the installation instructions appropriate for your Ubuntu release. Confirm that both Docker and the Compose workflow you plan to use are available before deploying.
- Obtain and review the Compose file. Get a Compose file from the official sysPass Docker project. Before starting it, review the image tags, database credentials, exposed ports and volume mappings. Replace any example passwords, and do not use an old image tag as a current-version recommendation.
- Start the deployment. The documented command is
docker-compose -p syspass -f docker-compose.yml up -d. It uses the olderdocker-composecommand form; follow the syntax supported by the Compose installation you actually have if it differs. - Inspect startup logs. Review the application and database logs for startup errors before opening the service to users. If the application cannot connect to its database, check the Compose service configuration and credentials rather than exposing the database port publicly.
- Persist and protect data. Ensure the Compose deployment uses persistent volumes for configuration, backups and database data. Back up all of those volumes, not just the application container; containers can be replaced, while the volume contents hold the data that must survive replacement.
- Put the web interface behind HTTPS. Configure an HTTPS endpoint before public access. Keep database ports private and limit access to the host and administrators who need it.
Do not treat a successful up -d as proof that the installation is ready. Confirm that the browser interface loads over HTTPS, complete the installer, sign in, and verify that the persistent storage and backup plan behave as intended.
How should you secure and maintain a self-hosted sysPass instance?
Security depends on the whole deployment, not just sysPass’s encryption features. Before storing real credentials, review each layer: the public web connection, application files, master password, database exposure, container or host updates, and recoverable backups.

- Use a strong master password. Make it unique and store it in a protected location accessible to the people who need it. Do not put it in a public deployment file or share it through an insecure channel.
- Restrict sensitive files. Follow the installation guide for web-server ownership and permissions, especially for
app/configandapp/backup. - Keep database access private. Users should reach the web application, not a publicly exposed database port. Use dedicated credentials for the application.
- Maintain a recoverable backup. Include application configuration and database data. In Compose, include every persistent volume identified by the deployment; on a native install, account for both the database and sysPass configuration and backup files.
- Test restoration, not just backup creation. A backup is useful only if it can be recovered. Verify that your chosen process restores the database and required application configuration, and document who can perform it.
- Review updates before applying them. Check compatibility between the sysPass release, PHP and MariaDB before changing any component. For Compose, verify the image’s maintenance status and pin a maintained image rather than relying on an unspecified or historical tag.
Two-factor authentication is listed among sysPass’s features, but the material available here does not specify the setup flow for a particular release. Check the documentation for your installed version before relying on it as part of an access policy.

What should you check if installation fails?
Start with compatibility and logs rather than making broad permission or network changes. The likely fault area depends on whether Apache/PHP/MariaDB run natively or inside Compose.
- The installer reports missing dependencies: compare the installed PHP version and modules with the requirements for the exact sysPass release. The older Debian guide’s module list may not map directly to current Ubuntu package names.
- The site loads but the application cannot connect to MariaDB: check the database name, username, password and host entered during setup. In Compose, verify that the application is configured to reach the database service through the deployment rather than a public address.
- The web server cannot read or write application data: check ownership and permissions against the installation guide. Avoid making the whole application tree broadly writable as a shortcut; pay particular attention to the configuration and backup directories.
- The browser cannot reach the site securely: check the HTTPS configuration and ensure the requested site is the SSL-enabled one before sharing the login URL.
- Data disappears after a container is replaced: confirm that the relevant configuration, backup and database paths are mapped to persistent volumes and included in your backups.
- A startup or upgrade breaks after changing versions: check whether the sysPass release, PHP runtime, database and image tag are mutually compatible. Restore from a known backup if the data or configuration has been altered unexpectedly.
