The fastest way to learn Sword of the Sea is to treat every run as a loop: build momentum across the terrain, aim for a crest or ramp, jump, use the second jump when it helps, and land on a slope that keeps you moving. The Hoversword is a board-like traversal tool rather than a conventional sword-combat weapon. Terrain shape, restored water, Ocean Seeds, Tetra-funded skills and off-route challenge spaces all change how you move through each area.
This guide explains that loop, how to gain height, when to revisit a location, and where beginners commonly miss routes. Button information is identified as reported PlayStation guidance; check the in-game prompts on other platforms.
What is the Hoversword and how does movement work?
The Hoversword is the game’s primary means of travel. Giant Squid describes its motion as drawing from snowboards, skateboards and surfboards: you gather speed over a surface, then convert that speed into air when you reach a large wave-like crest. The developer links momentum, speed and airtime directly, so movement is about reading the landscape rather than holding a single “go faster” command. See the developer’s overview at Giant Squid Studios.
Think of a route as a line you are shaping. A useful beginner line is:

- Find a clear stretch of sand or another continuous surface.
- Build speed without making abrupt turns.
- Point toward a crest, ramp, fallen statue, halfpipe-like tomb or another visible launch shape.
- Jump near the top of that shape.
- Use the second jump if you need additional height or distance.
- Land on a descending surface so the next movement segment starts immediately.
This is a practical reading of the documented mechanics, not a promise that every slope behaves identically. A long, unobstructed approach is generally easier to control than trying to create a large jump from a standstill.
Why landing matters as much as launching
A jump is not an isolated stunt. Landing on a slope, ramp or broad sand bank lets the Hoversword continue its line and preserves the rhythm that produced the jump. Landing on a flat lip, a wall or an area with no follow-through may end the run even if the takeoff looked impressive. When scouting a crest, look beyond it for the surface where you intend to touch down.
Which terrain can extend a line?
Documented examples include fallen statues, ramps, skatepark-like ruins, halfpipe-shaped tombs and grindable chains. These objects are more than scenery: they can provide a continuation when the obvious ground route disappears. Approach them with enough room to align, and treat a chain or curved ruin as a line to enter rather than a target to hit at random.

Speed comes from preserving momentum across connected terrain. The game does not provide a verified universal speed threshold or a single boost-button rule, so focus on the shape and length of your approach.
- Start on the longest clear run available. Avoid beginning a jump immediately after a sharp turn or collision.
- Keep steering changes gradual. A smooth line gives the Hoversword more time to accelerate before the launch point.
- Choose a crest that matches your current line. A nearby small rise may be safer than forcing a turn toward a distant, larger wave.
- Commit to the takeoff. Turning across the crest at the last instant can send you sideways and leave no useful landing surface.
- Look for the next downhill surface before you leave the ground. Your landing choice determines whether momentum continues.
If a route feels slow, first ask whether the terrain is interrupting the line. A short patch of sand between rocks, a tight corner before a crest or a landing on level ground can all make a run feel weaker without indicating that the Hoversword is malfunctioning.
How do I jump higher?
Use speed and terrain together: approach a large wave crest or ramp with momentum, launch from its rising surface, then use the second jump when the first jump does not provide enough height. Giant Squid’s description supports the relationship between accumulated speed and airtime, but it does not publish an exact angle, speed value or universal timing window.
A reliable height-building sequence
- Search for a broad approach rather than the shortest approach.
- Align with the steepest usable part of the crest or ramp.
- Keep your line stable while climbing the surface.
- Jump as you reach the launch area, not several body lengths before it.
- After leaving the ground, use the second jump only when it improves the route to the landing surface or a higher platform.
The second jump is especially useful when the first launch clears a gap but leaves you below the next ledge. It is less useful if it sends you past the only safe landing. In exploration, a controlled lower landing is often better than spending the second jump for a little extra height and falling into an unrecoverable space.

Reported PlayStation inputs
A PlayStation hands-on account reports that pressing X again after a jump performs a second-jump trick. After advanced tricks are acquired from vendors, the same account reports holding L1 and pressing Triangle, Square, Circle or X for special tricks. It also describes combining moves for points and locating hidden Trick Attack arenas. Read the account at PlayStation Blog.
Those are reported PlayStation inputs, not an exhaustive, currently verified control chart for every release. On Steam, Switch 2 or another platform, use the game’s own control screen and on-screen prompts rather than translating these buttons by assumption.
What do Ocean Seeds do?
Ocean Seeds are restoration nodes. Activating one cleanses a damaged area and brings back water and sea life, changing both the appearance of the space and the routes available through it. The PlayStation account describes this transformation as a progression from dry, obstructed terrain to a living environment with new movement possibilities.
Do not treat an Ocean Seed as a purely visual objective. After activation, pause and rescan the area:

- Jellyfish can function as jump pads.
- Long seaweed strands can be climbed.
- Previously unreachable ledges may become approachable from the restored environment.
Matt Nava, Giant Squid’s founder and creative director, describes bouncing from jellyfish and gliding upward through restored kelp. That observation explains why an apparently sealed space can become navigable without a new conventional key or weapon.
Should I revisit areas after restoring water?
Yes. Restoration changes the traversal rules of a space, so a route that was impossible or inefficient on dry land may be practical afterward. The most useful habit is to make a short second pass immediately after activating an Ocean Seed, then return later if a distant ledge still appears out of reach.
A post-restoration scan
- Circle the newly restored water. Check its edges for channels or surfaces that were not usable before.
- Test nearby jellyfish as vertical launch points. Approach them with enough room to line up a jump rather than rushing directly underneath a ledge.
- Look upward through kelp. Long seaweed strands can provide a climb or glide route to higher ground.
- Compare the old dry-land route with the new water route. The water path may be faster even if the original route remains open.
- Recheck visible structures. Ruins, chains and ramps can make more sense when approached from a new elevation.
One restoration does not guarantee that every secret in the area is immediately reachable. It does guarantee that the space deserves a new look because water, wildlife and vertical routes now behave differently.

What are Tetra for?
Golden Tetra are a progression currency collected while moving through areas. They can be traded at vendors for additional tricks and skills. The hands-on account specifically warns that Tetra, vendors and Trick Attack arenas may be hidden off the direct route, so collecting only what is visible on the main line can leave useful upgrades undiscovered.

- Collect while traversing, not only during a dedicated sweep. The Hoversword’s movement loop naturally carries you past many pickups.
- Inspect side spaces around ruins and sinking tombs. A detour may contain both currency and a vendor.
- Return to a vendor when you have enough Tetra for a new skill. Advanced tricks expand the ways you can approach later terrain.
- Do not assume the first vendor is the only vendor. Hidden vendors are part of the exploration design described in the hands-on report.
Because no complete current vendor or collectible map is established, use environmental clues rather than following an unverified coordinate list. A route that looks like a dead end may be a deliberate detour to a shop, arena or cluster of Tetra.
How do I find hidden routes and Trick Attack arenas?
Look for movement opportunities that sit beside, above or below the obvious forward path. The documented spaces include sinking tombs, skatepark-like ruins, ramps, grindable chains and hidden Trick Attack arenas. These locations reward players who treat the environment as a connected course instead of a corridor.
Environmental clues worth checking
- Parallel lines: A chain or wall that runs alongside the main route may be a grindable alternative.
- Unusual curvature: A halfpipe-like tomb or bowl-shaped ruin often indicates a launch or continuation surface.
- Vertical gaps: A ledge above the route may become accessible through a crest, jellyfish or kelp after restoration.
- Partially submerged structures: Water can expose an approach that was not possible when the area was dry.
- Open space with no obvious objective: A broad arena-like area may be intended for Trick Attack challenges.
When you find a promising object, approach it from more than one direction. The useful entry point may be on the side that is not visible from the main path, and a failed jump can still reveal the correct landing surface for a second attempt.
How should I practise tricks without losing my route?
Separate travel decisions from score-chasing decisions. First learn a safe line through the area; then repeat it and add a trick where the landing remains predictable. The PlayStation account says moves can be combined for points, but the purpose of a trick is not to interrupt every traversal segment.
- Identify a broad, low-risk ramp or crest.
- Use it to practise the reported second jump or an acquired special trick.
- Watch the landing, not only the animation or score.
- Keep the trick if it preserves a route to the next slope; otherwise save it for a wider arena.
Trick Attack arenas are the natural place to experiment because they are hidden challenge spaces rather than mandatory links in the main travel line. Finding one is itself an exploration reward.
What should I know about controls and haptics on each platform?
The official developer page links PlayStation 5, Steam and Epic Games Store versions. Steam dates the original release to August 19, 2025. A Nintendo UK listing gives October 29, 2026 for a Switch 2 release; that regional listing does not by itself establish availability in the United States or every other market.

For PS5, the documented hands-on inputs above are the safest starting point, but the in-game prompts remain authoritative if a later update changes a binding. PlayStation also identifies DualSense trigger effects, and Nava describes terrain-dependent haptic feedback. On PC, Steam documents full DualSense support and notes that Steam Input should be disabled for that support to work as intended. A DualSense controller is optional, not a requirement for playing the game.

What are the most common beginner mistakes?
Starting a jump from a standstill
A stationary launch gives you less of the momentum that the Hoversword’s design expects. Back up to find a longer approach, even if that means taking a short loop through the terrain.
Looking only in front of the rider
Hidden routes often sit above, below or beside the direct line. Scan the sides of ruins, the tops of tombs and the space behind a restoration node before moving on.
Spending the second jump automatically
The extra jump is a tool for height, distance or correction. If the first jump already reaches a safe slope, keeping the second jump available may produce a better outcome.
Leaving immediately after an Ocean Seed activates
Restored water and sea life can alter speed and vertical access. Make a deliberate loop around the new environment before deciding that the area is complete.
Assuming every button is universal
Only the cited PlayStation account supplies the specific X, L1 and face-button inputs here. Verify keyboard, Switch 2 and other controller mappings in their own control prompts.

What is the simplest repeatable exploration routine?
Use this routine whenever you enter a new biome:
- Survey the main line. Note the largest crests, ramps, ruins and visible waterless gaps.
- Build a safe movement loop. Connect a clear run to a landing slope before attempting optional tricks.
- Locate the nearest Ocean Seed. Activate it if the route is blocked or the area appears intentionally barren.
- Rescan after restoration. Check water speed, jellyfish, climbable kelp and newly exposed approaches.
- Collect Tetra on the second pass. Search side paths and inspect likely vendor locations.
- Test unusual structures. Try chains, halfpipes, ramps and broad open spaces as potential traversal or Trick Attack routes.
- Leave with a landing plan. Before a long jump, identify where the line continues after touchdown.
This routine keeps progression, exploration and movement connected. It also avoids the false choice between following the obvious route and stopping to search every corner: restore the environment, then let the changed terrain reveal which detours are worth taking.
What does the developer say about the movement experience?
Matt Nava, founder and creative director of Giant Squid, describes the game’s central appeal in one sentence: “In Sword of the Sea, movement itself is a joy.” — PlayStation Blog, 2025. The practical lesson for beginners is to learn the landscape as a sequence of lines, launches and landings rather than rushing from objective marker to objective marker.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a keyboard and mouse for the same tricks shown on PlayStation?
The documented X, L1 and face-button sequence comes from a PlayStation account and should not be assumed to map directly to keyboard controls. On PC, open the game’s control settings and follow its displayed bindings; remapping may change the key used for a second jump or special trick.
Recommended Free Tools
Does restoring an Ocean Seed unlock every nearby secret immediately?
No single restoration is documented as a universal unlock. It changes the local environment, so some routes become possible while others may still require a better approach, a purchased skill or a later return.
Is a DualSense controller required on PC?
No. It is an optional way to access the documented trigger effects and terrain-dependent haptics. Steam lists full DualSense support and advises disabling Steam Input for that support, while the game remains playable with other supported controls.
Where can I find a complete list of vendors and Tetra?
A complete, verified current location list is not established. The safer approach is to search around ruins, sinking tombs, chains and post-restoration routes, where the hands-on account says vendors and Tetra can be hidden.
