Sword of the Sea turns movement into its main game system: you ride the Hoversword across animated dunes, build momentum downhill, launch from wave crests, and link carving, grinds, wall-rides, jumps, and tricks into one continuous run. Restoring an area with an Ocean Seed changes more than its color. Water becomes a faster route and adds jellyfish bounce pads, kelp lifts, rideable sea life, beacons, and speed orbs.
There is no minimap or objective marker. Instead, the world shows you what you have changed: orange desert becomes emerald water and green growth, while newly restored wildlife reveals routes and optional secrets. The forgiving triple jump, magnetic assists, and recoverable missed landings keep the focus on flow rather than precision-platforming punishment.
What is the Hoversword, and why is it the whole movement system?
You play the Wraith, a resurrected warrior in the Necropolis. A drop of water awakens the statue, and the sword becomes the rideable Hoversword. There is no separate walking loop that you switch to for ordinary exploration; the board is the character’s movement verb. Push forward and it glides, lean into a slope to gain speed, and use the terrain as a continuous skatepark.

Giant Squid describes the Hoversword as moving like “a snowboard, skateboard, and surfboard all in one.” That description is mechanical, not just promotional. Dune faces invite surf-style carving, downhill lines feel like snowboarding, and ruins provide the half-pipes, rails, ramps, wall-rides, and chains associated with skateboarding. The result is an exploration game where travelling to the next landmark is the central activity rather than downtime between combat encounters.

How does sand-surfing build and preserve speed?
Sand is a moving level, not a static floor. Giant Squid animates dunes as waves, from broad tides to small ripples, so the line you intend to take is always making small changes. You hold forward, make low-attention steering corrections, and use downhill faces and wave crests to maintain momentum.
Build momentum on the terrain
- Start with a downhill line. Descents add speed naturally; avoid fighting the slope with abrupt steering.
- Carve across dune faces. Long, smooth turns preserve speed better than repeated sharp corrections.
- Use crests as launch ramps. Approaching a wave peak with momentum produces more air than jumping from flat ground.
- Keep the run moving after a trick. A missed landing does not normally stop the Wraith, so return to a downhill line instead of trying to reset.
A community movement tutorial measured roughly 115 km/h while holding forward on flat sand. That is a player measurement, not an official Giant Squid specification; slopes and tricks can raise the effective speed.
Why the Wraith does not look glued to the board
Giant Squid documented a four-dimensional animation approach for the ride. A 2D left-right lean system was replaced by a 3D blendspace with “delta leans,” which layers turning motion so transitions overlap. A fourth dimension changes the Wraith’s stance with velocity, while slope orientation and counteranimation keep the body aligned as dunes rise and fall. Those systems are why a turn reads as a continuous transfer of weight instead of a character model rotating on a fixed skateboard.
What are the Hoversword controls for jumps and tricks?
The basic controls are deliberately small. Jump first, then use an additional air jump to extend the line or set up a trick. Advanced inputs become available from vendors after you acquire the relevant skills.
| Action | PlayStation control | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Jump | Press X | Use dune crests, ramps, and half-pipes as launch points. |
| Air jump / double jump | Press X again while airborne | Correct your trajectory, reach a higher ledge, or extend a trick. |
| Advanced grab, flip, or spin | Hold L1 and press Triangle, Square, Circle, or X | Buy the associated tricks from vendors first; combining inputs creates additional variations. |
| Recovery jump | Use the available jump sequence, including the third jump | The triple-jump design is intended to save a run after a miss, not to create a precision-platforming gate. |
Good timing on grabs and flips can produce a jump boost and a higher combo score. Tricks are optional for the story route: you can finish areas without mastering every move. Hidden Trick Attack arenas, marked by timed hourglass challenges, turn the same controls into score-focused courses.

Why is water faster than sand?
Restoring the ocean creates a readable but meaningful speed change. Matt Nava told But Why Tho that the increase is “not a dramatic” one, so it can be felt without making ordinary sand travel obsolete. The PlayStation Blog describes the Wraith as significantly faster on water, particularly for larger jumps and longer trick lines. Both descriptions fit the design: the increase is subtle during normal travel but becomes obvious when water, boosts, and air are combined.
| Surface or route | Movement role | Published or measured figure |
|---|---|---|
| Flat sand | Baseline glide; slopes and tricks add speed | About 115 km/h in a community tutorial while holding forward |
| Flat restored water | Faster highway for backtracking and long jumps | About 216 km/h in the same community tutorial |
| Boosted water line | Combines water speed with boost objects and air | About 400–450 km/h in the community tutorial |
| Polygon’s description | Independent qualitative indication of high speed | “Over 100 miles per hour” |
The kilometre-per-hour values are community measurements, not a Giant Squid speed table. A late-game water rail described in that tutorial is capped near the flat-sand baseline, so not every blue route is automatically the fastest line.

Ocean Seeds are the restoration nodes that cleanse a region and return its sea. The action is commonly described as Resonating: you plunge the sword into a crater, light a lantern cluster, or complete a nearby environmental interaction, then trigger the node. Restoration is therefore a movement upgrade as well as a story event.
- Read the dry area first. Look for craters, elevated lanterns, murals, suspicious ledges, and routes that appear just out of reach.
- Reach the activation points. Use dunes, ramps, half-pipes, and the triple jump to climb; optional Tetra purchases can unlock additional movement options.
- Resonate with the node. The desert changes to emerald water and lush growth, and marine creatures begin moving through the area.
- Make a second lap. Follow the new water lines and wildlife to heights, collectibles, and passages that were impractical or impossible before restoration.
What restoration adds
- Water highways: faster surfaces that support longer jumps and quicker returns through completed territory.
- Bioluminescent jellyfish: drifting bounce pads that move toward the Wraith and can chain vertical launches.
- Kelp and tall seaweed: vertical lifts. Approach and jump into the kelp to be carried upward or “upstream.”
- Rideable animals: whales, orcas, dolphins, sharks, and the flying turtle encountered in the Lost Grotto help cover distances beyond a normal jump.
- Glowing algae: rooftop growth that increases jump height.
- Later traversal tools: beacons for gliding and glowing orbs that ramp up speed.
- Extra Tetra: restored spaces often reward a return visit, turning the same area into a larger trick park.
How do you navigate without a map?
Sword of the Sea has no default minimap, compass quest marker, or pause-map route. Nava’s design uses the world state as its navigation overlay. Dry territory is dominated by orange sand; restored territory shifts to emerald green and blue, making the boundary between completed and unfinished spaces visible from a distance.
Environmental cues do the rest. Murals, lantern clusters, glowing algae, swordfish flocks, jellyfish, and unusual ledges point toward activities without placing icons over them. If a path looks deliberately shaped like a ramp or a wall-ride, it is usually an invitation rather than scenery. The game’s compact open spaces are meant to be reread after restoration, not crossed once and forgotten.

How do half-pipes, wall-rides, and camera movement work?
Ruined architecture and dunes are built as transitions for the Hoversword. In a half-pipe, pump from side to side to build speed and height; approach the next wall at an angle that keeps the camera aligned with your travel direction. The Epic beginner guide specifically recommends matching camera yaw to the side of the pipe you are riding, because a poor perspective can make the next wall appear later than it really is.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe camera also pans with turns and zooms out when a newly restored space opens up. That keeps high-speed lines readable while showing the scale of a new region. Grinding rails, ceramic rooftops, giant chains, gravel, pebbles, shale, and terracotta is part of ordinary traversal, not a separate challenge mode.
Do jellyfish, kelp, and animals replace jumping?
No. They extend the same movement language. Jellyfish provide forgiving bounce points, kelp supplies vertical lift, and animals bridge long gaps; you still choose approach angle, jump timing, and the next landing. Their purpose is to make restored areas feel physically different and to let a second pass reach spaces that the dry landscape only teased.
Does DualSense make a real difference?
On PS5, haptics and the controller speaker are a first-class feedback layer. Matt Nava said the DualSense reacts differently to each surface, while the Financial Times described distinct vibration and sound patterns for pebbles, sand, shale, and terracotta rooftops. Steam’s product information also notes controller-speaker sounds for roof tiles and rushing water on ocean highways.
That feedback helps identify a surface before the camera fully reveals it: coarse sand feels different from a smooth water run, and a gravel or rooftop grind has a different rattle. On PC, DualSense support is available, but PCGamingWiki reports that haptic feedback requires a wired connection. Steam Input should be disabled for the full DualSense feature set; adaptive triggers and the light bar are supported.

How do Tetra, Trick Attack, and New Game+ fit together?
Tetra are golden triangular collectibles spent with mysterious vendors to unlock tricks and skills. They are not a mandatory currency for simply moving through the main route, but they make optional ledges and challenge spaces more rewarding. Trick Attack arenas then provide timed tests for players who want a score target rather than another story objective.
Completing the campaign unlocks New Game+, which adds a speedometer and trick display. It does not add a second campaign; it exposes the information that movement specialists need for route refinement, speed attempts, and combo practice. The main path is intentionally short: GameRant estimated about 2.5 hours, Polygon described a first run as just under three hours, and PC Gamer reported about 3.8 hours with most collectibles.
What platforms and technical requirements matter for movement?
Sword of the Sea launched on 19 August 2025 for PlayStation 5, including PS5 Pro Enhanced, Steam, and the Epic Games Store, and entered the PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium Game Catalog at launch. PCGamingWiki also lists GOG.com, while the launch press release did not name additional console platforms. The game uses Unreal Engine 5.4.4 with Wwise audio middleware.
- Storage: Steam lists a 15 GB install.
- Input: a controller is recommended; keyboard movement remapping is limited to the documented WASD and arrow-key layouts.
- Steam Deck: Steam listed compatibility as Unsupported when checked on 29 October 2026.
- Intel Arc: a startup crash was reported on PC, and a 29 August 2025 patch addressed updates and fixes.
What should you do when a movement line goes wrong?
- Missed a landing: use the remaining jump, including the recovery-oriented third jump, then steer toward the nearest downhill surface.
- Lost speed in a half-pipe: make broader side-to-side pumps and align the camera with the wall you are approaching.
- Cannot reach a high ledge: restore the area first; kelp, jellyfish, algae, beacons, or a rideable animal may be the intended route.
- Unsure where to go next: scan for the orange-to-emerald boundary, unlit lanterns, craters, murals, or wildlife that appeared after Resonance.
- Water does not feel faster on PC: verify that the surface is restored water rather than a capped rail, and remember that the largest speed differences come from boosts and long uninterrupted lines.
How does the movement design shape the whole game?
The campaign is structured as a sequence of compact regions: surf, read the environment, solve a light interaction, restore the sea, then use the new water and fauna to revisit the space at higher speed and height. Giant Squid’s stated goal was to keep failure from interrupting that rhythm. Magnetized assists, drifting jellyfish, generous landings, and the triple jump let players learn the terrain while still enjoying the sensation of going fast.
That is why the Hoversword matters more than any individual trick. Sand supplies the constantly shifting line, water rewards restoration, and the world itself records progress through color, sound, wildlife, and new routes. Mastery comes from choosing better surfaces and chaining them together, not from memorizing a combat build or clearing a conventional platforming gauntlet.
