You can change a Steam game to a beta branch without losing progress, but Steam’s branch selector is not a backup system. The safe method is to finish and quit the live game, wait for any Steam Cloud synchronization, copy the save files to a separate dated location, select the branch under the game’s Properties, and let Steam finish updating before launching. Before returning to the live branch, preserve the beta-era backup and follow that game’s own compatibility instructions. Save formats, folders, Cloud behavior, and whether progress can move backward are controlled by each developer, so no universal “safe” switch exists.
How do I switch to a Steam beta branch without risking my saves?
Use this order every time: close the game, confirm synchronization is finished, make an independent copy of the saves, select the beta in Steam, wait for the download to complete, and read the developer’s branch notes before loading a profile.
- Finish the live-branch session. Save normally, exit to the desktop, and quit the game rather than leaving it suspended. If the title supports Steam Cloud, wait until Steam reports that synchronization has completed. Launching while a sync is unresolved can create a local-versus-cloud conflict.
- Make a manual backup outside the active save folder. Copy the entire documented save directory, or every save file identified by the developer, to a different drive or a clearly separate folder. Name the copy with the game, branch, build or version if known, and date, such as
GameName-live-2026-10-30. A USB flash drive or small external drive provides a second physical location, but it is optional storage, not a repair tool. - Open the branch selector. In Steam, open Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, and select Betas or Game Versions & Betas. Pick the desired branch. A private branch may require an access code supplied by the developer.
- Allow the update to finish. Selecting a branch changes the installed build, but it does not mean every file is ready immediately. Wait for Steam’s download and update activity to reach completion before pressing Play.
- Read the game’s instructions before loading a profile. Some developers use a separate beta save folder, require an import step, or recommend a fresh profile. Treat those instructions as authoritative because branch behavior is not standardized.
- Keep the beta backup before reverting. If you later choose None in the Betas menu, let Steam return to the live build and update fully. Do not replace your original backup with beta-era files until the developer confirms that the formats are compatible in both directions.
Why can a beta branch damage or hide a save?
A beta may change the save schema, use a different directory, or write data that the live build cannot parse. Steam changes the installed game branch; it does not create a universal save snapshot, convert incompatible formats, or guarantee that progress made in testing will enter the main release.

| Compatibility check | What to find out | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Save compatibility | Can the beta read a live save, and can the live branch read a beta save? | A one-way conversion can make a return to live unsafe. |
| Save location | Does the branch share the normal folder, create a separate folder, or require import/export? | Backing up the wrong directory can leave the real progress unprotected. |
| Cloud behavior | Does Steam Cloud synchronize one shared set of files or branch-specific files? | A cloud copy can overwrite or conflict with a local copy when branches use different data. |
| Rollback method | Does the developer document a supported way to return to live? | Changing the menu selection alone may not restore a compatible save. |
| Progress carryover | Will test-branch progress transfer when the update becomes live? | Beta work may be temporary even when the game remains playable. |
| Mods and configuration | Does the branch require different mods, launch options, or configuration files? | Old add-ons can prevent a profile from loading or alter what it saves. |
What should I do before opting into the beta?
Preparation is the part that protects you; the branch selection itself is only an installation change. Complete these checks while the live version still opens normally.
- Make a clean exit. Save at a known point, close the game, and do not copy files while it is still running.
- Confirm the synchronization state. If Steam displays a pending or failed Cloud operation, stop and decide which copy is authoritative before changing branches. Do not launch merely to see whether the warning resolves.
- Locate the developer-defined files. Search the game’s official support page, documentation, or maintained community instructions for the exact save folder and any profile, world, settings, or mod files that must travel with it.
- Copy rather than move. The original remains a recovery point. A backup is useful only if it is not being edited by the beta at the same time.
- Label the backup precisely. Include the game name, live or beta branch, build number when visible, and date. If you create additional copies, use a new label instead of overwriting the first one.
- Record unusual settings. Note whether the game uses a separate launcher, mod manager, custom launch option, or non-default profile. A branch can appear to have lost a save when it is actually looking at a different profile directory.
Where are Steam game saves stored?
There is no single save path that works for every Steam game. Developers choose the location and decide which files Steam Cloud is allowed to synchronize, so use the individual game’s documentation rather than copying a guessed folder.
Steam’s own userdata directories are useful when investigating Cloud files, but they are not a guarantee of the readable save location:
- Windows:
C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata - Linux:
~/.local/share/Steam/userdata
Those directories can contain Steam-managed copies and account or app identifiers rather than plainly named game saves. Steam’s backup guidance also states that third-party developers determine their own save locations. Valve-created games may have custom files that need separate handling; a SAVE folder can be among the files that are not included in a normal installation backup.
How does Steam Cloud affect a beta switch?
Steam Cloud is a synchronization layer, not a dated manual backup. Steam describes possible Cloud content as game settings, save games, profile statistics, and other user-specific data, but the developer controls which files are uploaded and how a game uses them.
A conflict can occur when a file was changed in two locations before synchronization completed. Steam warns that ignoring an unresolved sync problem and launching can result in lost data. When a conflict dialog appears, do not choose an option by habit: first determine whether the newest valid progress is on the computer or in the Cloud, then preserve both copies if the game’s instructions allow it.

Steam Support can explain how the Cloud system works, but it states that it cannot recover lost saves or resolve a player’s Cloud conflict. That limitation is why a dated local copy should exist before the branch is changed.
How do I select and install the beta branch in Steam?
The controls are in the game’s Properties window, and the label can vary slightly by Steam client or title.
- Open Steam Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Open Betas or Game Versions & Betas.
- Open the branch drop-down and choose the named beta, test, preview, or experimental branch. Enter a developer-provided code first if the branch is private.
- Close the Properties window and watch the game’s download or update status.
- Wait until the update is complete, then read the branch announcement or support notes before starting the game.
If the branch does not appear, the developer may have removed it, renamed it, limited it to an access code, or provided instructions through a separate launcher. Steam cannot create a branch that the developer has not published.
What should I check on the first beta launch?
Use the first launch as a controlled inspection, not as a normal play session. The objective is to confirm which profile the beta sees before it writes new data.
- Start the game only after Steam reports that the branch is installed.
- Check the profile, world, character, or campaign list. If the expected save is missing, exit without creating a replacement profile.
- Look for an in-game import, migration, or “use existing save” option described by the developer.
- Verify that the branch is using the intended configuration and mod set. Disable or update add-ons only as the game’s instructions direct.
- Make a small test save in the beta only after confirming the original backup is untouched. Label any new beta copy separately.
A missing profile does not prove that the save was deleted. It can indicate that the beta reads another folder or expects an import. Closing the game without creating new data preserves the ability to investigate.

Return by selecting None in the same Betas menu, waiting for Steam to download the live files, and then following the developer’s rollback instructions. The menu change restores the live build; it does not automatically make a beta-created save readable by that build.

- Exit the beta and wait for any Cloud operation to finish.
- Copy the beta save folder or files to a separately labeled location before changing the branch.
- Open Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, then Betas or Game Versions & Betas.
- Select None to leave the beta branch.
- Wait for Steam’s live-branch update to finish completely.
- Read the game’s rollback notes, then launch. If the live branch shows an empty or incompatible profile, close it and restore only the known-good live backup to the documented location.
Do not overwrite the live backup with beta progress just to make the latest session appear. If the developer documents one-way compatibility, retain the beta files for the beta branch instead.
Can beta progress be moved back to the live branch?
Sometimes, but it is a game-specific decision rather than a Steam feature. A developer may support migration, provide a conversion tool, keep separate files, or explicitly decline to support backward movement.
For example, Klei’s Rotwood documentation says its beta uses a completely separate save file and does not provide extra support for moving saves back to live. A Forever Skies test-branch announcement warns that progress made on the test branch will not carry over to the main game when the update becomes live. These examples show why a branch note can override assumptions based on another title.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen documentation is silent, treat beta progress as disposable until the developer confirms carryover. Keep the live backup and beta backup as separate sets, and never test compatibility by opening the only copy.
What if Steam shows the wrong save or a Cloud conflict?
Stop launching the game and preserve the files before attempting a fix. The recovery sequence is deliberately conservative.
- Stop writes. Exit the game and do not create a new profile, overwrite a slot, or repeatedly switch branches.
- Protect the known-good copy. Duplicate the manual backup to another location if possible and mark it read-only or otherwise keep it out of the active save directory.
- Identify the branch-specific folder. Compare the game’s documented live and beta locations and determine which one the current build is reading.
- Decide which copy is authoritative. Use file dates, the last session you deliberately completed, and the developer’s Cloud instructions. Do not select a Cloud conflict option until this decision is made.
- Restore to the documented path. Copy the appropriate dated backup into the folder the current branch expects. Keep the other versions untouched.
- Escalate format errors. If the game reports that the save is incompatible, contact the developer or consult its official branch instructions. Steam cannot convert incompatible save formats.
Does Steam’s Backup and Restore feature protect saves?
Steam’s Backup and Restore feature is primarily intended to preserve installation files so a game can be reinstalled. It should not be treated as a complete save archive, because save inclusion depends on the game and some saved data can live outside the installation directory.

Use the feature as an additional installation safeguard if useful, but keep the separate manual copy required for branch changes. For third-party games, the developer’s documented save path is the source of truth; for Valve-created games, check which custom files, including any SAVE folder, need separate handling.
Is a USB drive useful for beta-save backups?
A USB flash drive or small external drive can hold a second copy away from the active Steam library, which protects against an accidental overwrite in that library. Label the folder with the game, branch, build, and date, and eject the drive normally after copying.
Removable storage does not repair a corrupted file, translate a beta format, or resolve a Cloud conflict. Its value is that the original copy remains available when the working directory changes.
How should I handle mods and configuration files?
Treat mods, launch options, and configuration as part of the compatibility check, not as interchangeable accessories. A beta can require a different mod version or a clean configuration, and an old add-on can stop a profile from loading or change what gets written.
Read the branch notes for the supported mod set and any reset or migration procedure. Preserve configuration separately when it contains profile paths or custom launch arguments, but do not copy it into the beta unless the developer says it is supported.
What does a safe branch policy look like?
For occasional testing, keep one untouched live backup and one separately labeled beta backup. For long-running beta play, make a new backup before major updates and before every return to live. This creates a sequence of recovery points without relying on Steam Cloud’s current state.

What Steam officially says about Cloud and backups
Steam describes Cloud as capable of storing game settings, save games, profile statistics, and other user-specific data, while leaving file selection and behavior to the developer. Steam also warns that unresolved synchronization can lead to lost data if a game is launched, and its support guidance says that Support cannot recover lost saves or resolve Cloud conflicts for the player.
Valve has also recommended backing up saves before participating in a test branch. That recommendation is consistent with the practical rule here: preserve a separate copy first, then treat the branch as an experiment whose save behavior must be verified for the individual game.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Steam Cloud restore an older version of my save after a beta mistake?
Do not count on historical versions. Cloud synchronization generally presents the files the service currently considers synchronized, not a guaranteed archive of every earlier save, so a dated manual copy is the reliable rollback point.
Recommended Free Tools
Why does the beta show a new profile even though my live save still exists?
The beta may intentionally read a separate directory or require an import step. Exit without creating replacement data, then follow the developer’s documented path and migration procedure.
Will uninstalling a beta delete the save files?
Changing or removing an installed branch does not establish a universal rule for save cleanup. Because games store saves in different locations, verify the game’s instructions and preserve your manual copies before uninstalling or changing files.
Who can convert a save that the live branch calls incompatible?
Only the game developer can provide a supported converter or migration procedure. Steam can install the requested branch and synchronize configured files, but it cannot make two incompatible save formats readable.
