For playing The Legend of Zelda handheld on Switch 2, buy protection first: a case sized for Switch 2 that includes a screen protector. Add a microSD Express card only when your downloaded library needs more room, and consider a Switch 2-compatible USB-C power bank for long trips. An ergonomic grip may help some players, but no specific third-party model has verified fit or comfort here. A Pro Controller is for tabletop play, not for attaching to the console.
Nintendo’s Zelda 40th Anniversary case-and-protector bundle is the exact themed option, although the U.S. indexed listing was sold out during the latest check. The recommendations below separate confirmed Nintendo specifications from shopping categories where product-level evidence is still missing.

Which Switch 2 accessories matter most for handheld Zelda?
Protection and compatibility should drive the order. The console’s 7.9-inch, 1920 × 1080 LCD and approximately 10.7-inch width with Joy-Con 2 attached make an explicitly Switch 2-sized case more important than reusing an old Switch shell. Storage and power are conditional purchases: buy them when your downloads or travel schedule justify the extra cost and weight.

- Case plus screen protector: protects the console during transport and keeps the screen covered when it is not in use.
- microSD Express: adds game-storage capacity; ordinary microSD cards are not supported for Switch 2 game installs.
- USB-C power bank: useful for trips, but choose one that documents Switch 2 compatibility rather than relying on a generic wattage claim.
- Handheld grip: a comfort experiment, not a proven requirement or universal winner.
- Pro Controller and amiibo: worthwhile only for tabletop play or specific amiibo features.
Nintendo lists 256GB of internal UFS storage, with some capacity reserved for system use. The Switch 2 technical specifications, including screen, dimensions, storage and battery estimates, are available from Nintendo’s Switch 2 technical specifications.

Is the Zelda 40th Anniversary case worth buying?
It is the most direct match for a Zelda handheld setup because it combines the Switch 2 case and screen protector in one themed product. It is worth prioritizing when you want the design and can find fresh regional stock; it is not a reason to delay protection if the limited-edition bundle is unavailable.
What the bundle includes
Nintendo announced the Switch 2 Carrying Case & Screen Protector – The Legend of Zelda – 40th Anniversary Edition as an October 29, 2026 product. Nintendo’s U.S. indexed catalog listing showed it sold out during the latest check, and Nintendo described limited, first-come-first-served sales at Nintendo New York. Availability can change by country and retailer, so check the current listing rather than assuming a restock. The New York announcement is at Nintendo New York’s Zelda 40th Anniversary notice.
The console and game are not automatically included; Nintendo’s announcement states, “Game sold separately.” Treat any retailer photograph that shows a console or cartridge as presentation unless the package contents say otherwise.

How to choose a substitute case
If the anniversary edition is unavailable, look for a case that explicitly names Switch 2 rather than one described only as “Switch compatible.” Check these points before ordering:
- It should hold the full console with Joy-Con 2 attached, not just the tablet portion.
- The lid should avoid pressure on the analog sticks and shoulder buttons.
- There should be a protected recess for the 7.9-inch screen and room for a cable or a few game cards if that is how you travel.
- Measure the case interior if you plan to leave a third-party grip attached. Many grips add enough thickness to prevent the console from fitting in a slim shell.
- Confirm that a raised screen protector does not press against the case’s inner frame.
What the protector can and cannot do
Nintendo’s case-and-protector instructions caution that the products cannot completely prevent scratches or other damage to the touch screen. That is a limitation, not a drop-proof rating. Do not leave the console switched on inside the case, because heat and accidental input are avoidable risks during storage.
Will an old Switch case or grip fit Switch 2?
Do not assume it will. Switch 2 has different dimensions and Joy-Con 2 use a different attachment design, so an original Switch case may be too tight, leave controls exposed or fail to accommodate the new rails and buttons.

Original Joy-Con and grips
Original Switch Joy-Con can connect to Switch 2 wirelessly, but they cannot attach to the Switch 2 console. An original Joy-Con grip also does not accept Joy-Con 2. Nintendo documents the cross-generation behavior in its Switch 2 compatibility guidance.

Fit checks for a new handheld grip
No named third-party grip has a verified comfort or fit result in the available evidence. Treat a grip as a category to evaluate, not as a guaranteed upgrade. Before buying, confirm:
- The listing explicitly says Switch 2 and Joy-Con 2.
- Shoulder and trigger buttons remain fully reachable without the grip flexing.
- The top and bottom USB-C ports remain accessible for charging and accessories.
- The grip clears the screen protector and does not twist the console when held by one side.
- The added thickness still fits your travel case, or you are willing to remove it before packing.
Nintendo’s approximately 10.7-inch width with Joy-Con 2 attached is a useful sizing reference, but it does not predict individual comfort. Hand size, grip pressure and the weight of a case or power cable all change the feel.
Do you need microSD Express for Tears of the Kingdom?
Yes, if you want to install Switch 2 games on removable storage. Nintendo states, “Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards.” Ordinary microSD or microSDXC cards have a limited captured-media exception, but they are not the normal expansion path for Switch 2 game data.
How much space do the Zelda Editions use?
Nintendo’s U.S. Store listings give the Switch 2 Edition file sizes as 24.1GB for Breath of the Wild and 20.1GB for Tears of the Kingdom. Together they require 44.2GB before updates and other content. Because part of the console’s 256GB internal storage is reserved for system use, owners with several large downloads, screenshots and updates may want removable capacity sooner than the headline number suggests.

What card should you look for?
Use the microSD Express logo and the Switch 2 designation as the first filters. Nintendo lists a Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch 2, but capacity and seller price are separate decisions. A larger card can make sense for a mostly digital library; a smaller card may be enough if you buy game cards and keep only a few downloads installed.
Nintendo Support documents capacities up to 2TB and the compatibility rules at its microSD Express support page. Buy from a seller that clearly identifies the card as microSD Express, because an ordinary high-capacity card is still the wrong type.
How to add the card
- Back up or finish any downloads you need before changing storage.
- Power the console down and insert a card marked microSD Express; do not force an older card into the slot.
- Start Switch 2 and complete the required first-use system update over the internet if prompted.
- Check the system’s storage screen to confirm the available capacity before moving or downloading games.
The update requirement is part of Nintendo’s support guidance. It does not turn a regular microSD card into a compatible game-storage device.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow do you charge Switch 2 on a long trip?
Use a USB-C power bank that explicitly documents Switch 2 charging, and treat its weight, cable reach and charging behavior as the key buying criteria. Nintendo quotes an approximate 2–6.5 hours of battery life, depending on the game; that is a broad Switch 2 estimate, not a Zelda-specific result or a promise for any particular bank.
What Switch 2 provides
Switch 2 has USB-C charging connectors at the top and bottom, so a cable can be positioned around a case or stand. Nintendo’s technical specifications say, “The battery life will depend on the games you play.” A demanding game, display brightness, wireless activity and temperature can all change the time between charges.
How to compare a power bank
- Compatibility statement: prefer a product that names Switch 2, not only phones or the original Switch.
- Port and cable clearance: make sure the plug can remain connected without lifting the console or blocking a grip.
- Weight: a large bank can make handheld play tiring even when it extends the trip between outlets.
- Pass-through and charging-while-playing claims: verify that the manufacturer documents the behavior you need; no particular bank or extra Zelda runtime has been validated here.
- Travel rules: check airline and local restrictions for the bank’s battery rating before flying.
Nintendo says an original Switch AC adapter can charge a Switch 2 when connected directly, but it cannot enable Switch 2 TV mode. That distinction matters if you are packing an old adapter as an emergency charger: it can supply power to the console, but it is not a replacement for the Switch 2 dock-and-TV setup.

Is a handheld grip better than Joy-Con 2 alone?
A grip may reduce the pinched feeling some players get during long sessions, but there is no evidence here to rank a particular model or promise an ergonomic improvement. Buy one only after confirming the physical checks above and deciding whether the extra bulk is acceptable.
For Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom, the useful comparison is not a benchmark score; it is the trade-off between hand support and portability. A broad grip can spread pressure across the palms, while a slim grip is easier to pack. Neither choice changes the game’s handheld support, and neither makes an incompatible original-Switch accessory safe to use.
When does a Zelda Pro Controller make sense?
The Switch 2 Pro Controller – The Legend of Zelda – 40th Anniversary Edition is an optional tabletop accessory. It is appropriate when the console is on a stand or connected to a display, but it is not an attached handheld grip and cannot replace Joy-Con 2 for carrying the screen in your hands.
Nintendo also lists a controller-plus-display-stand variant. That combination can suit a desk, hotel room or shared table where the screen remains upright. If your priority is walking around with the console, spend the budget on a proper case, storage or charging solution first.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do Zelda amiibo and ZELDA NOTES add value?
Both Switch 2 Editions list amiibo support, so compatible physical Zelda amiibo are a niche add-on for players who already collect them or want amiibo-enabled features. The evidence does not establish a universal reward for a particular figure, so buy for the feature or collection rather than a promised item.
ZELDA NOTES is a Nintendo Switch App feature tied to the Switch 2 Editions, not a console accessory. It requires a compatible smart device and persistent internet connection. If you are preparing for offline travel, treat the app as a separate convenience and do not confuse it with the console’s local handheld functionality.

What should you buy, and what can you skip?
| Need | Buy now | Skip or defer when | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Protecting the console in a bag | Switch 2-sized case with a screen protector | Do not rely on an original Switch case without a confirmed fit | Different dimensions and Joy-Con 2 attachment make compatibility uncertain |
| More room for digital games | microSD Express, sized for your library | Defer if internal storage is sufficient | Only microSD Express supports normal Switch 2 game expansion |
| Long periods away from outlets | Documented Switch 2-compatible USB-C power bank | Skip a generic bank with no Switch 2 statement | No reliable Zelda runtime can be inferred from a generic capacity number |
| Hand comfort | Grip with verified Switch 2 and Joy-Con 2 fit | Skip if it will not fit your case or blocks USB-C ports | Comfort is personal and no named model has verified results here |
| Tabletop play | Pro Controller or controller-and-stand bundle | Skip for an exclusively handheld setup | It is a detached controller, not an attached handheld accessory |
| Amiibo features | Compatible Zelda amiibo you specifically want | Skip if you do not use amiibo features | Support exists, but a particular reward is not guaranteed |
How were these recommendations chosen?
The ranking follows the decisions that affect handheld Zelda most directly:
- Compatibility first: Switch 2 and Joy-Con 2 fit is mandatory; original Switch accessories are not assumed to transfer.
- Protection before extras: a case and screen protector protect the console during transport, while grips and themed controllers are optional.
- Storage based on need: the two Zelda Switch 2 Editions total 44.2GB before updates, making capacity a library decision rather than a universal purchase.
- Portable power based on documentation: choose a bank that explicitly supports Switch 2 and avoid invented runtime promises.
- Handheld versus tabletop clarity: a Pro Controller is useful on a stand or display but does not solve attached-console comfort.
Where a product-level fit or performance result is not established, the recommendation stays at the category level instead of naming an unverified winner.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can both Zelda Switch 2 Editions fit on the console’s internal storage?
Their listed files total 44.2GB, so they fit within the nominal 256GB internal capacity before system-reserved space, updates and other games are counted. Whether that is comfortable depends on how much of the library is digital and how many captures you keep.
Will a microSD Express card improve Zelda loading speed?
Nintendo’s guidance establishes compatibility and supported capacity, not a comparative loading-time result for a particular card. Treat microSD Express as the required storage format, not as a guaranteed performance upgrade over internal storage.
Is the 40th Anniversary case available everywhere?
No single worldwide stock status can be assumed. The U.S. indexed listing was sold out during the latest check, while Nintendo described limited first-come-first-served sales at its New York store, so regional retailer pages need to be checked independently.
Does ZELDA NOTES work without an internet connection?
Nintendo describes ZELDA NOTES as requiring a compatible smart device and persistent internet. Plan it as an online companion feature rather than something to depend on during a fully offline journey.
