Yes, but not straight out of the box. A Nintendo Switch 2 Game-Key Card must first download the game and complete its initial launch while the console is online. After that, Nintendo says the installed game can start without an internet connection, provided the Game-Key Card remains inserted and the game itself supports offline play. A sealed card therefore is not suitable for an internet-free trip until you have completed setup at home.

The reason is simple: a Game-Key Card is a physical license key, not a cartridge containing the complete game. The Switch 2 stores the game data in system memory or on a microSD Express card.

What is a Switch 2 Game-Key Card?

Nintendo Switch 2 uses two kinds of physical game cards. Regular cards contain the game software, although a title may still require additional downloads. Game-Key Cards contain the key that authorizes the console to download the full game. Nintendo describes the distinction plainly: “Game-key cards are different from regular game cards, because they don’t contain the full game data.”

The downloaded files remain on the console, but the card continues to act as the physical launch key. Installing the files does not convert the purchase into an account-bound digital copy. Nintendo also says, “A Nintendo Account is not required to download the game data.” Nintendo’s Tetsuya Sasaki told GameSpot on 7 April 2025 that key cards start on the console in which they are inserted and are “not tied to an account or anything.”

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said the format was introduced to accommodate the larger game data sizes of Switch 2 titles. There is no authoritative percentage of the Switch 2 catalogue that uses Game-Key Cards.

Do you need internet for the first download and launch?

Yes. Nintendo’s documented setup requires an internet connection for the initial download and first launch on each console.

  1. Insert the Game-Key Card. The Switch 2 detects the card and displays the download prompt from the HOME Menu.
  2. Download the game data. The game is obtained over the internet rather than read in full from the card.
  3. Launch it once while connected. Nintendo’s offline-play rule begins after this first launch.

The console must run system software version 20.1.1 or higher to play Game-Key Card software, according to Nintendo Support’s current overview. You also need enough free space in system memory or on a microSD Express card. The required capacity is printed on the Game-Key Card packaging and listed on the Nintendo eShop page for the equivalent digital version.

Complete both the download and first launch before leaving home. A new card will not install from the box on a plane, train or holiday location with no Wi-Fi or mobile connection.

Can you start the installed game offline?

Yes, after the first connected launch, if the title has an offline mode. Nintendo Support states: “An internet connection is only required when you launch the game for the first time. After this, the game can be started even without an internet connection. However, like regular physical software, the game-key card must be inserted into the system in order to play the game.” Nintendo UK gives the same practical instruction: “When you want to play, you just need to insert the game-key card – no internet connection required.”

There are two conditions to remember:

  • The Game-Key Card must be physically inserted every time you play. The installed files alone are not enough.
  • The game must provide an offline mode. Downloading a title does not remove its own server requirement.

For example, online multiplayer, live-service functions and other server-dependent features still need an internet connection. Tom’s Guide used Rocket League as an example of a game that requires internet access to play. FinalBoss.io, The Click, PocketPlay and Tom’s Guide all distinguish this title-specific requirement from the separate question of whether the software can launch offline.

What storage does a Game-Key Card need?

There is no format-wide download size. Each box states how much free space that particular game requires, and the same figure appears on its digital store listing. Large updates or downloadable content can require additional capacity after the base installation.

Nintendo specifically names microSD Express for expandable Switch 2 storage. Do not assume that an older conventional microSD card is the expansion format Nintendo refers to for these downloads. Check the available space before starting the installation; a card that is too full can prevent the initial download even though the physical Game-Key Card is present.

What happens if you use the card on a second Switch 2?

The receiving console does not automatically inherit the first console’s installation. Insert the card into the second Switch 2 and follow the download-then-first-launch process there, with adequate storage and an internet connection.

Because the key is not tied to a Nintendo Account, the physical card can be lent or resold. The previous owner’s installed files will not launch while the card is away. A friend who borrows the card needs the game data on their own console, either by downloading it or by using the local-transfer method described below after the necessary game icon exists there.

This differs from a one-time download code redeemed to an account. A Game-Key Card remains a transferable physical object, but every console still needs access to the software data.

Can two Switch 2 consoles transfer a Game-Key Card game without internet?

Sometimes, using Nintendo’s Match Version with Local Users feature. Nintendo documents this tool for sharing software updates over local wireless and says, “An Internet connection is not required to use this feature – update data is shared between users over local wireless communication.”

In July 2026, the YouTube channel GVG demonstrated that the same function could transfer an already-installed Game-Key Card title, including its updates, to another Switch 2 with neither console online. Gameranx (16 July 2026) and TechTimes (17 July 2026) reported the discovery. Nintendo had not advertised it as a Game-Key Card distribution method or issued a statement confirming it as such, so treat it as a community-demonstrated use of an official update-sharing tool rather than a guaranteed product feature.

The documented menu path is:

  1. On both consoles, highlight the game icon on the HOME Menu without starting the game.
  2. Press Plus or Minus, choose Software Update, then select Match Version with Local Users.
  3. One console chooses Creates Group; the other chooses Joins.
  4. Both systems select the same software icon and choose Start Session.

Both consoles must already show the game’s icon. GVG reported that the card must have been inserted at least once with internet enabled for that icon to appear on a console. The physical card is still needed to launch the transferred installation, and save data does not move with the sync. This is not GameShare, which streams live play, and it is not Virtual Game Cards, which require internet at handoff and are time-limited.

GVG observed roughly seven minutes to transfer a game of about 7 GB. That is one creator’s demonstration, not a Nintendo specification; much larger games could take considerably longer, and Nintendo has not published transfer limits or promised that future firmware will preserve this behavior.

How can you identify a Game-Key Card before buying?

Do not rely on the words “physical edition” in a shop listing. Check the exact packaging and edition:

  • The front is labeled as a Game-Key Card and uses the key treatment.
  • Nintendo UK says the card has a key icon at the top right of its front.
  • GameSpot reported a white banner along the bottom of Switch 2 game cases for this format.
  • The box states the required free space.

If you need a self-contained cartridge for a location where you cannot get online, verify that the product is a regular game card rather than a Game-Key Card.

What if you delete the installation or Nintendo’s servers are unavailable?

Nintendo has not published a dedicated support procedure promising that a deleted Game-Key Card installation can be restored entirely offline. PocketPlay’s August 2026 guidance says buyers should expect internet access to be needed for a redownload, but that is operational advice rather than a Nintendo-stated guarantee.

Nintendo also has not promised that download servers will remain available indefinitely for a card that was never installed. VGKami highlighted the preservation concern: the card by itself does not contain the game content. The safest practical approach is to finish the first installation and launch while the title’s download service is available, and to retain enough local storage for the installed copy.

What should you do before travelling offline?

  • Update the Switch 2 to system software 20.1.1 or later.
  • Check the package’s required storage figure and free space in system memory or on a microSD Express card.
  • Insert the Game-Key Card while connected to the internet.
  • Let the complete game download finish.
  • Launch the game once before disconnecting.
  • Pack the physical card; the installed files will not start without it.
  • Check whether the particular game’s multiplayer or other modes require servers.

Following this checklist gives you the offline behavior Nintendo documents. It does not make online-only features work without a connection, and it does not remove the card requirement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will deleting a Game-Key Card game let me reinstall it from the card alone?

Nintendo has not documented a fully offline restore process for a deleted installation. Plan on needing an internet connection to download the game again, even though the physical key card is still valid.

Can local Match Version move my save file too?

No. The July 2026 demonstrations transferred the installed software and updates, not save data. Move or back up saves using the Switch 2’s separate save-data tools.

Does a Game-Key Card include future updates and downloadable content?

The card authorizes the base game download, while updates and downloadable content are separate data. They can require additional storage and may have their own online or account requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is there an official average download size for Game-Key Card releases?

No. Nintendo publishes the required space title by title on the packaging and the corresponding store listing, rather than giving one average for the format.
